This year, Santa realized, there were more good children than he had ever seen! Children who helped their neighbors shovel snow and rake leaves and mow lawns, children who said please and thank you, children who helped bring food and toys to other families who were less fortunate. There was just one problem – how was he supposed to carry all those presents in one sleigh? The reindeer would complain about the extra weight, and there were only a few hours in the night to complete the task. But good children deserved to have their wishes fulfilled, and Santa wasn’t in the business of letting wishes go unfulfilled. So Santa had to look at some other options. He inquired at the Post Office, but they were already stretched delivering cards and fruitcakes – and they didn’t even have the benefit of elves! The elves suggested maybe a catapult might work, and showed him a toy one they had built in the workshop. He could fling presents down chimneys, all from the comfort of the North Pole, and even give the reindeer a night off! Perfect! But when he put a football through the icicle window of the reindeer barn, he decided that maybe that wasn’t his best idea. He thought about a helicopter but he wasn’t sure he could land it on the roof. He looked into carrier pigeons, but they kept bringing the gifts back to the North Pole. He even designed a series of tubes that would carry presents down to earth, but then he realized that Christmas Eve was just days away, and even the elves couldn’t build that fast. Finally, he resigned himself. Maybe he would just have to deliver the extra gifts next year, when he had more time. But what he didn’t know was that while he was trying all these crazy ideas, the elves were hard at work building a new kind of sleigh that would hold even a mountain of gifts. And the reindeer, under the coaching of Prancer, were running drills so they could run faster and jump higher. Christmas Eve came, and the elves began their bucket brigade of toys. Imagine Santa’s surprise when, no matter how many packages they put in the back of the sleigh, there was still room for more! He even called over Mrs. Claus to make sure his eyes weren’t deceiving him, and she whispered in his ear what the elves had done. There would be extra goodies for them tonight, she assured him. They had worked very hard, and he was pleased. And when the reindeer took off, he almost fell out of the sleigh – they flew faster than they had ever flown! He was so proud of how hard everyone had worked to help him deliver presents to the children of Earth, just as those same children helped their friends and family. Every single present was delivered. But Santa took a present back with him too – a reminder that he could pitch in and help around the North Pole. He helped the elves patch up the broken icicle Window in the barn. He washed up the trays that Mrs. Claus used to bake reindeer snacks. Because helping others, he realized, is a gift you can give year-round.
