Three pensive Lhasa Apsos, a breed that guards palaces and monasteries in Nepal, look out from kennels at the Susquehanna SPCA on Tuesday, Oct. 2. They were among 53 of the little dogs rescued from a Milford home, the largest seizure in the animal shelter’s history. The cache of doggies was discovered after an Otsego County sheriff’s deputy was called to the scene the day before to resolve a neighborhood dispute. Within a week, all the adorable pups had been adopted by families from across Central New York.

Former Schuyler Lake fire chief Bob Hugick, the officer in charge at the scene, stands in the depression where an XNG rig carrying compressed natural gas flipped off Route 28 just south of Schuyler Lake on July 11. The crash, the fourth involving XNG trucks since the Bostonbased company started its “virtual pipeline” between Pennsylvania’s fracking fields and the Iroquois pipeline near Little Falls in February 2017, prompted calls by state Sen. Jim Seward, R-Milford, and others for the company to rethink its strategy. By October, XNG had reduced number of trucks crossing the county daily from 80-90 to a handful, shifting the traffic to straighter, wider Route 8 in Chenango County.

Congressional candidate Antonio Delgado is swamped by thrilled fans like Ginger Heitz, Cooperstown, and Kat Chiba, right, Cherry Valley, when he dropped by the Cherry Valley Kite Festival Sept. 22. At that point, Delgado had already defeated six other candidates in the June 26 Democratic primary, and would go on to defeat the incumbent U.S. Rep. John Faso, R-Kinderhook, in the Nov. 6 general election, despite – or because of – attack ads built around the Rhodes Scholar’s and Harvard Law School grad’s short career as a rap artist in Los Angeles a decade earlier. EDITIONS OF MARCH 1-2: Gretchen Sorin, director of the Cooperstown Graduate Program in Museum Studies, spoke to a packed room at First Presbyterian Church, Cooperstown, about her thesis on “The Green Book,” a guide for black travelers during the Jim Crow era before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 integrated all public facilities. The book is the basis of a documentary, “Driving While Black,” that famed filmmaker Ken Burns’ brother Rick is directing, to be broadcast on PBS next year. In November, Sorin and Burns again packed a hall, this time The Fenimore Museum auditorium, for a Q&A and initial screening of the film.

EDITIONS OF MARCH 29-30: Toby Green, Milford, drew 40 bullet holes in his sign to show how quickly an AR-15 could kill innocent people as part of the March For Our Lives walk on Saturday, March 24, in Oneonta that sought to raise consciousness about gun violence after the Feb. 14 killing of 17 students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

Hesse, a trained archaeologist, collected many of the artifacts over a decades-long career as an auctioneer.

EDITIONS OF APRIL 19-20: This dead goose stuck in an electrified fence tipped off a passerby something was awry at 166 Backus Road near Garrattsville, Town of New Lisbon. When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they found 103 starving and neglected animals, from pigs, chickens and donkeys to Pyrenees confined in cramped pens. The animals were seized, and William DeSimone, 43, and wife Gabrielle Bastian, 52, were charged with five counts of torturing animals.

EDITIONS OF APRIL 26-27: After 45 years of conducting for Oneonta-based Catskill Symphony Orchestra, Chuck Schneider, Frankfort, retired Saturday, April 28. But never one to stay still, he plans to write a symphony of his own and has continued to play in the area. In an interview, he recounted recruiting Dustin Hoffman as a guest performer at an early concert in the 1970s.

EDITIONS OF MAY 17-18: Four tiny bobcat kittens were found by Marcy Birch, owner of Barnyard Swing (and Cooperstown Central school board president), in one of the outbuildings on her mini-golf course in Hartwick Seminary. When the mother didn’t come back, a wildlife rehabilitatior took the kittens in to raise and release them. But don’t be fooled by their cute faces – they will grow into deadly predators and will take a chicken or two right out of your backyard.

Focus’ top two executive, CEO Josephy Zupnik and COO Daniel Herman pleaded guilty Sept. 12 to related criminal charges, and were sentenced to community service. EDITIONS OF JUNE 21-22: As tens of thousands of departing undergraduates have done before her, SUNY Oneonta President Nancy Kleniewski passed through the pillars of Old Main for a final time as president on Friday, June 22 after a 10-year tenure marked by a student focus and a leap in the college’s endowment to over $50 million, the largest among SUNY’s consolidated colleges. She retired to Rhode Island.

The Council detailed poor food quality, lack of fresh fruits and vegetables, and even instances where residents who were asleep at mealtimes were later denied their meals. Centers responded by hiring and training new staff and creating a Dining Council to improve meal quality.

EDITIONS OF OCT. 1819: The Cooperstown Bat Co. made it into the MLB this year, as both Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez and Houston Astro second-baseman José Altuve hit homeruns with the local bats in the run-up to the World Series. Sox left-fielder Steve Pearce was also photographed using a Cooperstown Bat. With his bat, Vazquez hit a single his first time up in Game Four of the World Series Saturday, Oct. 27, helping the Sox win the championship. Here, Tim Haney, who owns the company with wife Connie, lovingly examines one of the bats he has been developing since buying the company from Don and Sharon Oberriter in 2008.

EDITIONS OF OCT. 25-26: Bob Orlando, owner of gutted 4703 Route 28, Hartwick Seminary, hugs Yipsie. He said his tenant, Rodney Abrams, went back into the burning home the night of Saturday, Oct. 20, to save the little dog. After an outpouring of support through Cooperstown’s Angel Network, Orlando and the Abrams family were reunited in a home in Toddsville, which they are renting together until they can find a permanent home.
EDITION OF NOV. 1-2: Atty. Andy Puritz and Nancy Couch recite the Kaddish as mourners from across Otsego County filled Oneonta’s Temple Beth El to reflect on the slayings of 11 people killed by a white supremacist during services at the Tree of Life synagogue on Oct 27 in Pittsburgh.
EDITION OF NOV. 8-9: State Sen. Jim Seward, RMilford, congratulates Sheriff Richard J. Devlin Jr. for turning back a strong challenge from retired state trooper Bob Fernandez, husband of county Rep. Kathy Clark. Fernandez refused to concede, but a canvass a few days later confirmed Devlin’s victory. Seward also won, and handily, but Republicans lost control of the state Senate.

WEEK 50 EDITION OF DEC. 6-7: Former mayor John Nader accepts a plaque from Mayor Gary Herzig on behalf of his father, former mayor Sam Nader, inset, after Oneonta Common Council unanimously voted to rename the Oneonta Municipal Airport as The Albert S. Nader Regional Airport on Tuesday, Dec. 4. In the 1960s, the elder Nader steadfastly pushed for and achieved a modern airport for the City of the Hills, despite a local newspaper labeling it “Nader’s Folly.” Built, it provided daily passenger service to New York City for 26 years. Sam Nader, now 99 and unable to attend the ceremony, watch the ceremony, streamed on Facebook, from his River Street home.
EDITION OF NOV. 29-30: Michael Tracy holds up a feast in the “tasting nook” of Elena’s Michael Catering, which he founded to honor his Oneonta partner and entrepreneur Elena Doyle’s local legacy as a famed chef – that’s her jacket on the left. Elena passed away in April.
EDITIONS OF NOV. 22-23: In a scoop of international proportions, this newspaper was first to report that an FBI analysis of a Fabergé frame and locket on display at the Russian History Museum at Holy Trinity Monastery, Jordanville, contained locks of hair that, once and for all, proved that remains found in the Ural Mountains in 1979 were indubitably those of Tsar Nicolas and Tsarina Alexandra, executed by the Bolsheviks in 1918.
