ocket the Elf took Santa’s coat off the hanger and stood in the mirror. What a fine coat it was!

In Elf School, they had talked about what they wanted to be when they grew up. Booster wanted to be a painter in the toy factory. Lottie wanted to take care of the reindeer. Cookie wanted to work with Mrs. Claus in the bakery, of course.

“When I grow up,” Rocket said to himself. “I want to be Santa Claus!”

He would have to grow a bit to fit into the suit. He would have to learn to drive the sleigh. He would probably have to feed the reindeer. Sometimes he couldn’t even remember all of their names, there were so many of them.

And the lists! He’d have to check all the names on the list, match them up with the perfect gift, double-check to make sure they were being nice to the people around them and doing good deeds throughout the year. One spelling mistake and it could all go haywire!

Rocket sat down on a little stool with his head in his hands. There was a LOT to being Santa Claus!

Just then, Santa came into the room. Rocket snapped to attention. He was afraid he might get in trouble for trying on Santa’s coat without permission. He knew he wasn’t supposed to be there. But Santa just chuckled. “I think it’s a little big on you,” he said.

Rocket started to cry. “I wish I could be you when I grow up,” he said. “But I don’t think I could ever be as good as you, Santa! You do so much!”

Santa sat in his big chair and patted his knee. He lifted Rocket into his lap. “All you need to be is a good Elf,” he said. “I will take care of everything else.”

“But Santa,” Rocket said. “I want to help spread cheer to people! Winter gets so cold, and so dark, and Christmas makes everyone so happy! Why wouldn’t I want to help with that?”

Santa put his finger on Rocket’s chest, just above his heart.

“That is all it takes to be Santa Claus,” he said, tapping gently.

“If you are kind to people, if you give love in abundance and assist those in need, then you are Santa Claus. And not just on Christmas, but every day of the year!”

Rocket dried his tears on the velvet coat’s sleeve. He gave Santa a hug. “Thanks Santa,” he said. “And I don’t even have to wait until I grow up!”
