WEEK 5

EDITIONS OF FEB. 2-3: County Rep. Peter Oberacker, R-Schenevus, walks 144 acres at I-88’s Exit 18 that he and Otsego Now President Sandy Mathes identified as ideal for a 500job distribution center that e-retailers like Amazon are building around the Northeast. Mathes’ departure at mid-year and the discovery of seven acres of wetlands on the site slowed progress, but by year’s end the idea was still alive.

OTSEGO COUNTY YEARBOOK EDITIONS OF MARCH 16-17: The evening of Sunday, March 12, the dark winter sky was lit up for miles around the Village of Milford, where the United Methodist Church was gutted by an arsonist’s torch. Pastor Sylvia Barrett and her congregation, which includes state Sen. Jim Seward and his family, refused to be defeated, regrouping that next Sunday at the Upper Susquehanna Cultural Center. By November, they had purchased the nearby Milford Manor Farm’s building and reconsecrated it as their new home. Meanwhile, on Saturday, July 8, state police charged a 20-year-old Springfield Center man with setting the fire.

WEEK 25

WEEK 1

EDITIONS OF JUNE 22-23: Chiara Salati, a member of the Adventure Staff of Cooperstown’s Clark Sports Center, scales a rock wall in the lobby Saturday, June 17, during an open house to introduce the public to a $21 million expansion that added 7,000 square feet to the institution on outer Susquehanna Avenue. The renovations included a third swimming pool, for therapy, and a high-tech Fitness Center. Space was also added to accommodate Bassett Hospital’s Physical Therapy Department. Clark Foundation President Jane Forbes Clark was on hand, serving coffee to the visitors.

EDITIONS OF JAN. 5-6: The first day of 2017 had not yet dawned when Joshua Underwood, 25, called Oneonta City Police at 3:27 a.m. and confessed, “I’ve done something bad and I don’t want to run.” Officers were dispatched to 229 Main St., the former Java Island building, where Mark J. Underwood Morrison, 52, was found dead in his bed, bludgeoned multiple times with a body-building weight. It was the first of five murders, plus a trial in a 16-year-old murder, that punctuated the county’s usually peaceable existence this year – there had been only three local murders in all since the decade began. Underwood pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to 20 years in jail, but withdrew his plea in December and may face trial. In top photo, OPD Officers Edmund Donley and Lindsay Rumenapp were among the officers at the scene of the New Year’s Day slaying.
