Empowering Lifelong Learning

with Brenda Autry

Brenda has been teaching for LB for the past six years and offers a wide variety of classes. Her love of fitness, photography, travel, and the outdoors—along with a desire to share these interests with others—led her to teaching, which has become a new passion. Brenda deeply cares about her community and consistently goes out of her way to serve the LBCC campus community and staff.

As an Army veteran and former boxing coach, Brenda’s passion for fitness has translated into a range of strength and cardio classes that students can’t get enough of. Students appreciate her positive energy and ability to make classes both fun and engaging. They often note the intentional structure of her workouts and her clear, helpful demonstrations. Through participation in her classes, students develop increased strength, confidence, and energy.

In addition to fitness, Brenda is a professional photographer who has traveled to over 30 countries. She brings this expertise to campus through classes such as How to Solo

Check out Brenda’s “Easy Lunchtime Strength Training” (pg.5) & “Nature & Photography Adventures: Oregon’s Waterfall Highway” (pg.7) offered this Spring!

Letter from the President

Dear community,

As I write this letter, we are looking ahead to spring and the fresh start it brings. For many of us, longer days and warmer weather inspire us to try something new, develop a skill, or explore a longtime interest. At LBCC, we believe learning is a lifelong journey, and this spring, I want to share insights from some of our youngest students about what makes learning truly meaningful. Our Periwinkle Child Development Center serves as a living laboratory where sophisticated learning happens in real time. What makes Periwinkle unique is that it shapes two generations at once: preschoolers exploring their world through play and inquiry, and college students preparing to become future educators. Theory becomes practice as our students engage directly with children, applying their coursework in real time while fostering curiosity and imagination.

If we want to understand what drives effective learning, we should pay attention to our preschoolers. They remind us that learning begins with wonder, that genuine curiosity fuels persistence far more than external pressure ever could. In an emergent curriculum like Periwinkle’s, teachers follow children’s questions and interests, creating activities that spark critical thinking and imagination. Children teach us that mistakes aren’t failures but essential data in the learning process, that learning is fundamentally social and relational, and that true understanding takes time and repetition. Perhaps most importantly, they show us that learning should be joyful. These same principles apply to adult learners. Whether you’re exploring a new hobby, developing professional skills, or pursuing a degree, you’ll learn best when you’re genuinely curious about the subject, when you feel safe to experiment and make mistakes, and when you’re given time to develop mastery. The classes represented here are designed to create inclusive, engaging learning environments that support success and foster meaningful connections within our community.

I also want to highlight a valuable community resource: our Early Learning Hub’s Pollywog Program. This free service connects families with young children across Linn, Benton, and Lincoln Counties to parenting classes, child care, health services, and community support programs. Pollywog offers personalized referrals tailored to each family’s unique needs, helping navigate everything from prenatal care to early intervention services. Their website features a monthly parenting newsletter, weekly blog, and comprehensive local resource guides. Visit pollywogfamily.org, call 541.917.4884, or follow them on social media for parenting tips and family-friendly event listings. ¡Hablamos Español!

As you explore this catalog, I encourage you to reconnect with your own sense of curiosity and wonder. Choose something that genuinely interests you, give yourself permission to experiment, and remember that meaningful learning takes time. LBCC is here to support your journey, honoring the truth that learning is a lifelong adventure, one that begins and sustains itself through curiosity, community, and inclusive education and community engagement.

Thanks, Lisa Avery
