“WE OFFER CLASSES FROM A TO Z” Community Education co-coordinator loves lifelong learning

Ryan Kinnett is a believer in lifelong learning. That’s why, five years ago, he jumped at the opportunity to be a coordinator for the community education program at Linn-Benton Community College.

Kinnett and the college’s other community education coordinator, Sue Stone, build the program together each term.

They interview instructors, set the schedule and organize the classes. Kinnett’s focus is art, music and fitness and Stone covers gardening, languages and computers and technology.

Community and Continuing Education programs at LBCC include business resources, professional certification classes, career readiness, family resources and other forms of training for people to expand their opportunities. For Kinnett, however, the best part is helping people connect with learning simply to enrich their own lives and the lives of those around them.

“We offer classes from A to Z and it’s pretty remarkable; People who are engaged in these things often have more fulfilling lives, because there’s a community of learning.”

It’s especially fun to see people get so excited about what they’re learning that they want to return as an instructor themselves. In the art classes especially, Kinnett said, an artist with a particular skill often will sign up to learn something new and then ask to come back to teach their own passion. “It’s always about diversifying what we do, too.”

Kinnett said he and Stone are careful to keep the community education program from duplicating what is offered for academic credit at LBCC. Similarly, the program often holds its classes at spaces offered by community partners, such as school districts, the YMCA and city Parks and Recreation departments. Some of those agencies offer their own community education programs, so LBCC makes sure what it can supply is different and won’t compete.

An advantage of the community education program is that it’s open to all ages, Kinnett said. Spring term included a learner in their 90s, and once one of the pupils was 102.

Youths and families also are welcome, he said. “In the summer, we work with Greater Albany Public Schools and the Corvallis School District to do classes specifically for their students.”

Kinnett works full time making sure the community education program is all it can be, but he also puts part of his earnings toward making it available to others.

LBCC invites staff members to direct a portion of their paychecks to various scholarships as an automatic deduction.

Kinnett’s choice is the LBCC’s Community Education Scholarship program, to make it easier for residents to take advantage of the classes offered.

The scholarship has been in the building process for a couple of years. LBCC is finalizing the application process so it can be opened to students in the fall.

“We’re excited to be able to support the growth and interests of our community members through this scholarship,” said Andrew Wynings, director of development and operations. “We hope this new opportunity will open doors for those members of our community who believe that, due to financial constraints, learning something new is out of reach.”

The community education program has been able to offer some of the state’s lowest fees for noncredit classes, but still needs them to cover the costs of instructors, facility rentals and some of the part-time staffers. When those costs rise, fees need to go up, too, Kinnett said.

At the same time, Kinnett said, many of the people who choose community education classes are on fixed incomes.

“Asking people to pay more is a financial burden. We don’t want money to be a problem for people to sign up for classes,” he said. “That’s where scholarships really help us help them.”

A longtime volunteer who is president of the board of directors for the Mid Valley Soccer Club and received the 2021-22 Volunteer of the Year award, Kinnett is determined to do what he can to try to make the world a better place.

“I can attribute that to how I was raised, to my family, and to what I’ve always been exposed to,” he said. “It’s pretty amazing to me that I get paid to create services for people. That brings me joy.”

Instructor Highlights Gena Sellers - Pets, Animals & Farm Why did you choose to be a Community Education Instructor? I want to give back to my community. And I get to add enrichment to other people’s lives.

What factors have influenced your teaching the most?

I began my adult life as an amputee. I started using the phrase: It’s not something I can’t do, but I have to do it differently. I started learning different ways to help navigate my world, while doing that I found my passion, helping others, working with animals, and gathering information to help me be more accessible to my environment.

This term, Gena Sellers will teach a new class called Investigating Oregon’s Exotic Pet Trade. See page 33.

Ryan Brockey - Computers Skills & Technology Why did you choose to be a Community Education Instructor?

I wanted to teach in Community Education because I love to teach and CE seems like a great way to reach a lot of people and pass on useful skills.

What makes your classes special?

I teach Excel I, Excel II, and Intro to Modern Computer Programming classes. These classes are special because they help people unlock the power of tools they did not have access to before. If you know how to use spreadsheets, people will think you’re a wizard. People are always so surprised by what you can accomplish with Excel.

An “open studio” type class. An engaging and inspiring experience intended to foster creativity and experimentation in an atmosphere of enthusiastic encouragement. Provides the perfect opportunity for artists with a basic understanding of drawing and color mixing to work in a supportive and creative atmosphere on works of their choosing. Instructor will be available for individualized informative technical and design instruction. Instructor will help students gain insights into their creative accomplishments, develop new skills and explore their preferred styles.

MANDALA WORKSHOP SERIES NEW!

Mandala simply means “circle” in Sanskrit and is a geometric design that holds a great deal of significance in ancient cultures. After a brief introduction about mandalas and their significance in traditional and modern cultures, the instructor will show students how to draw simple to somewhat complex mandala patterns using just a pencil, some paper, and the guides provided by the instructor. GNOME GARDEN IN A POT NEW!

Let’s build a Gnome Garden center piece or pot for your outdoor or indoor garden or table. Completed gnomes will be approximately six inches tall. Week one will be making the gnome and week two will be painting and sealing it. Bring a 12” or larger sized pot filled with soil and any cute decorative pieces you’d like to include. FAMILY CLAY, POTTERY & HAND-BUILDING

Come create with clay in a fun, relaxed, and supportive environment. This two-day experience is taught by two local instructors teaming up to teach beginners handbuilding techniques and how to throw on a pottery wheel. A preschool cooperative for families and their 3-, 4- and 5 -year olds. Children must be 3 or 4 years old by the first day of Fall Term of the current school year to enroll. Kindergarten eligible children are not eligible for enrollment. Three mornings a week the instructor leads activities including books, songs, demonstrations, and sharing/interaction with other children during the preschool lab. Parents/guardians take turns assisting the instructor during lab time. Preschool activities foster children’s growth, development and school readiness. RILEY COLEMAN

MAKING POSITIVE CHANGE A second-year student in Linn-Benton Community College’s Human Services Program, Riley Coleman is on track to graduate this summer with her associate degree. She hopes to continue her education at Portland State University, where she will pursue a bachelor’s degree in social work.

“I’d like to study social work there so I can become a juvenile probation officer if all else goes to plan,” said Coleman.

Coleman, from Brownsville, Or., was a sophomore in high school when she met a juvenile probation officer during a career day held at her school.

“He described the things he did and I was like, wow, that’s really cool!” she said.

She forgot about the meeting until late in her junior year when she started thinking about what she was going to do after high school.

At the time, Coleman was involved in her church’s youth group, and she was volunteering as a middle school art class assistant. All around her, she witnessed the struggles of her friends and other people her age.

“All I wanted to do with my time was talk to them and help them and just do what I could,” she said. “I realized that’s something I want to do even past this age.

I want to help struggling teens to grow and become their best selves.”
