Letter from the President Dear community, As you receive this magazine, we are heading into spring with longer days and hopefully, more sun. For many folks, the new year brings resolutions for learning and growth; LBCC is happy to offer opportunities for just that, through the wide variety of community education classes highlighted in this publication.

The Benton Center offers a wide variety of art, language, and fitness classes and several of our community options will be offered as remote classes, making it easy to join in from your kitchen table. Perhaps you are looking to get back out and travel? Consider our language classes and brush up on your skills. If you are one to use your kitchen to learn, there are options to hone in on your culinary skills and learn about Buddha Bowls or how to bake Hawaiian cookies! At our Lebanon Center, there will be classes offered on Cyber Security. Increasing your Excel knowledge is made easy with a variety of levels and incorporating your training from your office with remote access.

Our Live & Learn Parenting program offers options for parents to connect with other parents to learn about their child’s milestones and development, while the kids get to play and interact.

Classes are offered in Albany, Corvallis, Philomath and Lebanon, and I am so glad that the college is able to offer this resource to local families. We are very proud of this program!

Our main campus in Albany is our largest of six locations and can be seen busy on a Saturday morning with Motorcycle Safety classes in the parking lot. Thanks to our partnership with Knife River, we are now offering Commercial Driving License (CDL) programs utilizing their state of the art Training Center located on the outskirts of Albany on the way to Lebanon. The CDL training and education offers an opportunity to get a high-wage job as a truck driver while staying in our community.

Since I joined the LBCC community in July 2020 as President, my mission and goals have focused on creating an institution of higher education to serve all members of our community and all corners of Linn and Benton counties. Because there are many more places to visit and people to meet, I encourage you to reach out to me with opportunities you believe would be helpful in the college’s goal to provide Education for All. I hope you and your family will find valuable offerings at LBCC, your community’s college!

Gabriela Orellana and the SBDC Help Build Healthy Communities by Building Healthy Businesses Corvallis restaurateur who decided to make healthy juices after he was diagnosed with diabetes. By forming relationships with growers, he created a sustainable method of juice production by purchasing overripe fruit and turning it into juice which needs no added sugar.

“Even though he had run a successful restaurant, he didn’t know the steps for working with the Department of Agriculture and getting a product licensed to sit on a shelf,” said Schwartz.

Orellana helped him understand the licensing requirements, create a budget and financial plan, and understand his target customers. She also helped him with the Department of Agriculture, and food safety requirements.

GABRIELA ORELLANA When Gabriela Orellana came to Linn-Benton Community College 18 months ago, she was charged with rebuilding the Spanish-speaking advising program for the Small Business Development Center (SBDC).

The SBDC has had a nearly 40-year relationship with LBCC. “We help businesses grow, thrive, and reach their goals through free expert business advising and affordable at-cost classes,” said Marissa Schwartz, the center’s director.

The SBDC was in need of a Spanish-speaking advisor. Enter Gabriela Orellana.

Orellana has 22 years of experience in banking; undergraduate degrees in finance and business administration; and master’s degrees in market research and communication. For the last ten years she has worked with small business financing.

The SBDC at LBCC is now one of the few Oregon centers with in-house advising and services in English and Spanish.

SBDC clients are paired with advisors who serve as free and confidential coaches, helping them achieve their goals. They work with businesses for their entire lifecycle.

“It really highlights what we do for businesses,” said Schwartz.

Orellana works closely with the Hispanic community. Approximately 65-70% of her clients are in food-related businesses, though she also advises childcare providers, retail stores, tattoo artists, florists and more. She has assisted 17 business startups in the last year.

“I love working with my clients on pricing analysis, finances, construction budgets, and bank loans,” Orellana said. That’s no surprise, given her experience leading and constructing small business lending programs.

Orellana believes that some members of Oregon’s Hispanic community feel relegated to working in farming—even with other skills.

Immigration status is sometimes an issue, so Orellana knew she needed to gain their trust.

Now she gets clients through word of mouth.

“They call me or come to the office … they have confidence in me,” she said.

Schwartz is quick to point out that all business advising is confidential and information is never shared unless the client gives permission.

“A lot of our classes are virtual or hybrid so everyone has access,” said Schwartz. “If we haven’t seen something here, we can access resources from our network.”

The program is growing exponentially, and Schwartz credits Orellana’s hard work, determination, and empathy, along with the LBCC Extended Learning Department’s support.

“We’re lucky to work with open-minded people who are willing to think differently, so we can be a safe place for people to find help.

We want people to reach out and tell us what they need,” said Schwartz.

“Our ulterior motive is a healthy community ... and we know healthy communities are built by healthy businesses.”

I belong to a local fly fishing club where I have written articles and done presentations.

I have devoured many online resources that I can share with my students. I love everything about fly-fishing and want to help others discover how cool it is.

While working for five years as a forensic investigator, I became deeply enthusiastic about what forensic science can offer.

MANDALA WORKSHOP SERIES

Mandala simply means “circle” in Sanskrit and is a geometric design that holds a great deal of significance in ancient cultures. After a brief introduction about mandalas and their significance in traditional and modern cultures, the instructor will show students how to draw simple to somewhat complex mandala patterns using just a pencil, some paper, and the guides provided by the instructor. With an organic approach taken to creating mandala designs, no drawing skills or special tools are required in order to enjoy this class. All skill levels are welcome.

An ”open studio” type class. An engaging and inspiring experience intended to foster creativity and experimentation in an atmosphere of enthusiastic encouragement. CLAY EXPLORATION

All of knitting is just two stitches, the knit stitch, and the purl stitch, and once you know those you can knit anything. Come learn about yarn weights, needle types and sizes, casting on, how to do knit and purl stitches, increases, decreases, and binding off, all while creating two useful washcloths. We will also cover what to do when good stitches go bad – an important part of any knitting project. Some supplies are included with the class fee. Mark is an expert aeromodeling designer, builder, and flyer with many first place wins in national and international competitions. AEROMODELING: DRAGONFLY KIT NEW!

Mark designed this model 25 years ago and it has won in numerous competitions. It’s a very lightweight model that can be flown in gymnasiums or outdoors on calm days. It’s a rubber-powered “stick and tissue” model, using balsa wood and lightweight covering. Mark will show you how to adjust it for maximum flight times. FAMILY CLAY, POTTERY & HAND-BUILDING

Come create with clay in a fun, relaxed, and supportive environment. This two-day experience is taught by two local instructors teaming up to teach beginners handbuilding techniques and how to throw on a pottery wheel. The first class will focus on project creation while the second class will allow students to glaze their work.

LBCC’S DENTAL ASSISTING PROGRAM A Great Path for Helpers Like Kristin Robison

Kristin Robison is a helper. Even so, after nine years serving with the fire department, she decided it was time to slow down. She set her sights on becoming a dental assistant. Linn-Benton Community College was the perfect place to begin her journey.

Robison began serving as a cadet with Scio Fire Department when she was just 16 years old. At age 18, she began working fires with the Scio and Lebanon fire departments as an intern/volunteer and then exclusively with Lebanon.

“I thought I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life,” she said.

“Now I’m only 25 and I’ve been through a lot. I’ve seen a lot with the fire department. House fires, medical calls, wildfires.”

Robison knew she wanted to work in healthcare, so she obtained EMT certification and worked as a certified nursing assistant while still a firefighter. Neither, she decided, would be her lifelong career. She began investigating different types of healthcare programs.

Dental assisting caught her eye.

Dental assistants play an important role in providing quality dental care. They work closely with dentists to ensure that patients receive the best possible care. Dental assistants sterilize equipment, prepare patients for procedures, take x-rays, and provide postoperative instructions.

A unique benefit of the LBCC’s program is chairside assisting – which allows students to learn correct techniques to treat patients safely and effectively. That hands-on experience comes through LBCC’s Dental Link clinics, where students get to help people – even before they finish the program.

Applications for LBCC’s Dental Assisting Program open again in May

Dental Link is a free dental clinic organized by LBCC. Lindsey Chronicle serves as the clinic coordinator.

“Dental Link is staffed by a volunteer dentist from the community along with our dental assisting students,” said Chronicle. “The dentist and dental assisting staff can do cleanings, exams, x-rays, fillings … even extractions.”

Patients pay an office visit fee of just $30 to participate; anything beyond that is free during the 60-to 90-minute appointment.

“Last year, we served 45 patients through the Dental Link

With this high projected growth, now is a great time to start training for a career in dental assisting at LBCC. Robison agrees. “The instructors here are great. They really make sure that you’re getting the material right, not just showing you once and then leaving you on your own.”

As for dental assisting as an occupation, Robison has finally found her niche. “I definitely think I’ll do this for the rest of my career. I’m really loving it.”
