Gover nment and Opposition engaged as accusations fly By Staff Reporter Friday June 7th, 2019, Brades— Political rhetoric has amped up between the island’s two main political rivals, as both sides of the aisle accuses the other of dishonesty and misleading the public; offering conflicting perspectives on the direction in which the country is going. The government and the MCAP opposition party have been engaged in a back and forth debate on several major transformational projects that the MCAP administration claimed to have left on the table when the PDM administration took office in 2014. A claim which the Honourable Premier Donaldson Romeo said was misleading, stating that while there were plans to construct a sea port and hospital building, there were no funds set aside for such plans. In his rebuttal delivery, Premier Romeo stated that “The previous government without any commitment for funding, went about seeking private sector investment to build a port in Carr’s Bay— even if you had a 50/50 split it would mean that the people of Montserrat would not have control over the port which means a foreign investor would have a stronghold on one of our key and most valuable assets.” He added, “What is really wrong is that they cut down Gun hill, filled Piper’s Pond and designed building for a port project that had no funding…the fact that there was no funding was the real bad thing. Worst yet…the gov-

According to Farrell the honourable Premier was amidst discussion by the then MCAP administration to build a port in Carr’s Bay, “not just a Port, an international port. A port in which government was going to make money irrespective of who built it, because the notion that Government must build everything, that notion has gone outside the door. We are in an era that we have to attract foreign direct investment, so there is nothing wrong in trying to attract private investors to work along with government to

Premier Donaldson Romeo ernment had hoped to raise funds for the port, millions of dollars by selling passports.” According to Romeo, “I did not stop the Carr’s Bay port project, the previous government stopped it themselves. I did not stop the hospital either…I did not shout down PIU, is the bad name PIU got for being caught up in a web.” Meanwhile Eastern Farrell, “The honourable Premier is in fact trying to defend his inefficiency and his inability to deliver on key projects which he met in place when he came into office,” Farrell stated as he referenced the 2014 budget statement by the Honourable Rueben T Meade, as supporting evidence. “…that year monies were allocated for the hospital and I will also reference the budget speech of the Honourable Premier Donaldson Romeo in 2015, where he referenced the hospital project…, they cannot deny the fact that

there were $34 million allocated for the hospital redevelopment project. It may not have been called a hospital redevelopment project but in those monies were funds for the construction of a hospital and equipment.” He added, “The original

plan from the MCAP administration was to build the hospital on its current site… This Government came in and wanted to do everything on green-field, the secondary school, the hospital and in the quest for wanting to undo or put their signature mark on things they kind of dismantled everything…the Premier knows that he is misleading the people when he said there was no hospital project.”

Because they have no confidence in themselves and the people have no confidence in them,” said Farrell.

The two vehicles were shipped to Montserrat through the collaborative efforts of the DMCA, the Governor’s Office and MUL Store. Dear Kate Reprinted from antiguanewsroom.com

Taking money from my mother’s boyfriend Dear Kate, I am a 20-year-old girl who lives with my mom. I just finished college and my mom has this new boyfriend who has a lot of money. I mean he is based on what I see he brings to the house. I have been secretly taking money from him. I cannot say he has ever disrespected me. I think he just wants me to approve of him and my mom. I know he loves her. So one time he was home and I started complaining I need a new phone and he bought me one. Then I asked him to upgrade my laptop and he did. My mom knew about it and asked me to stop. But I couldn’t. I said well I need to go to driving school. He is the one paying. Last week I called him and asked him for 500 to buy some clothes online and he told me ok but don’t tell my mom because she will be upset. He has been slipping me money behind her back I guess to keep me happy. Do you think this is wrong? I mean it’s not like we sleeping together or anything? He just gives me money to ensure his place is secure with my mom. I don’t think I want it to stop but I don’t want to hurt mom. Pensive. Dear Pensive, Plain and simple; it is wrong to be taking money from your mother’s boyfriend. Especially without her consent. She told you to stop and you refused. The love of money they say is the root of all evil and I can already see this blowing up into something you will regret. Secondly, if your mother’s new found love had any respect for her he wouldn’t be going down that lane with you. Besides, why would he have to pay you to approve of him? His approval has to do with how he feels about your mom and the way he treats her. Something’s not right here. I’m guessing you didn’t tell all there is to about that story. I could be wrong. But long and short, it’s not wise to take money in secret from your mother’s boyfriend. Kate

Your weekly Horoscopes

AQUARIUS (Jan. 21- Feb. 19) Home improvements are figured strongly in this week’s stars, as are family meetings. The only snag is that you are finding it difficult to make up your mind about which arrangements you actually prefer. Even when you settle on a particular option you may find that matters outside your control cause delays. PISCES (Feb 20 - Mar 20) Mars is now strengthening its role in your life, meaning that you will find it easier to stand up for yourself over the rest of the month. The only word of advice is to avoid losing your temper or insisting that other people bend to your way of doing things. If you say something you shouldn’t, then it may be too late to apologise! ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20) The happy news is that Venus, the planet of love, pleasure and all good things, is sending you maximum encouragement. The welcome result should be a lift in your morale – and very soon. With a little effort in the right direction, you’ll find it that much easier to get on with people and form satisfying emotional ties. TAURUS (Apr 21 - May 21) You’re generally an honest, straightforward person. As some would say, you ‘tell it like it is’. Yet now that you’re about to enter a rather secretive phase, you will face the temptation to cover up the truth. My word of advice for the next month is to be open and above board in all your dealings, including in personal matters. GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) Mercury’s excitable behaviour is making life seem rather blurred around the edges. Most of you are having a hard time just getting a fix on what it is you’re supposed to be doing, and why. Actually, this is in ideal time to question your current involvements, setting yourself free for a number of improvements. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) The entire week will be dominated by the gradual approach of Venus and Mars to their various meetings with Jupiter, planet of hope and optimism. You must realise that this is a time when you may achieve your life-long goals, always provided you are prepared to take a giant leap of faith: you have to believe in yourself! LEO (July 24 - Aug 23) The Moon gives you a flying start, but not until the middle of the week. All you need to do is make sure that your very wonderful ideas are put into practice in every detail. Inspiration is on the way for working Leos, too, especially if you have won colleagues over with your ready charm and wit. VIRGO (Aug 24 - Sep 23) You are now caught between two utterly marvellous planetary alignments, one which encourages you to break free, the other which urges you to stay where you are. If there is a problem, it’s too much choice! The planets are begging you to put your daily routine to one side and indulge yourself in your favourite fancy. Please enjoy yourself! LIBRA (Sep 24 - Oct 23) The planets are in a muddle, but the result is that you can make your own choices. On one level this is an excellent time for all business-minded Librans. On another, you should understand that any decisions taken now are likely to be revised or regretted later on. So, when it comes to spending your hard-earned cash, be sure exactly what you want. SCORPIO (Oct 24 - Nov 23) Be positive. The Sun is edging its way towards a slap-up confrontation with your chart, so you will have to face the music sooner or later. The best advice now is: come clean about all past blunders and convince other people you were in the right – and had no choice. And do give partners the benefit of the doubt. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 24 - Dec 23) A financial problem should now lie in the past, which will come as quite a relief. At the very least, you can look forward to a smoother ride in the future. And, as an added bonus, you’re about to receive all the credit you so richly deserve for all your past efforts and achievements. Also, be sure to listen to good advice later in the week. CAPRICORN (Dec. 23 - Jan. 20) This is, in general, a fine time of year, mainly because the Sun’s gentle change of position helps you come to terms with your motives and calm your shattered nerves – and get back on your feet. The best planetary patterns arouse romantic thoughts for all the young-at-heart, however old they are. I hope that includes you.

Plans in place to hold first Cadet Pilot Program in Montserrat

By Staff Reporter Friday June 7th, Brades— The Department of Community, Youth and Sports Services announces plans to host the first Cadet Pilot Program in Montserrat this summer. The program is geared towards young individuals ages 10 to 16 who are interested in becoming a pilot or pursuing a career in the aviation industry. Director within the Department, Lyston Skerritt said, “We were reached out by the Antigua Flight Training Centre and they had an interest for people from Montserrat come to Antigua, but when we looked at the cost and the variables we decided that’s not feasible. So what we are looking at is, can we do this locally and then they come to us?” According to Skerritt, a number of third form students had expressed interest in a career as a pilot following the

Montserrat Secondary School (MSS) job shadowing experience program last month. “I think that kind of perfect storm of interest and inquiry made us say ok, let’s look at the feasibility of doing this program,” said Skerritt. At present there is no preset budgeted fund for this program, however the department hopes to have a minimum target of 30 persons to determine the feasibility of hosting the program in Montserrat and to have the instructor come here to facilitate the trainings. “— then we will have to analyze, cost, venue and resources…because this is not one budgeted for, but because we have such an interest in aviation we can’t ignore it. So we’re letting the feedback from the community essentially define how we will proceed,” the Director stated. Skerritt expressed confidence that they will get the

targeted number of interested persons needed for which the cost would be calculated. They are also considering approaching several sponsors to help off-set the cost of hosting the program. The course has a general duration of four months and is composed of a combination of practical and theory sessions. It will incorporate classroom sessions, training videos and

simulations, as well as site visits. The program will be divided into several learning areas to include aeronautics, communications and navigations, meteorology, security and search and rescue. Additionally, it is expected to provide mentorship for the young participants, providing them with guidance in subject selections needed to pursue a career in the aviation field.

The Lion and Little Rabbit I managed to save my life” said the little rabbit. The lion got very angry with the words of the rabbit. “I will give him a lesson with my powerful claws. Where is he? Show me, where is he?” roared the lion. The little rabbit and the lion started to search the other lion. After a while, they came too near a well. “That arrogant lion, saying

bad things about you, is in this well.” said the little rabbit. When the lion leaned into the well, he saw his own reflection on the surface of the water and thought of another lion and began to roar. As he roared violently, his voice echoed in the well and more violently came up. The lion got very angry and jumped into the well. The lion understood the little rabbit’s plan, but it was too late. This was his end.

The Lion and Little Rabbit Once upon a time, there was a lion living in the forest. Every morning, the lion roared so loud that all the animals searched for a place to hide. One day, monkeys, rabbits, squirrels and all other animals made a meeting. They made a discussion about the fear of lion. They didn’t want to live with the fear of being the prey of the lion every day. They decided together what to do and went to the cave of lion. “Our dear King! We made a decision together. Every day one of us will come to your cave and you will eat it and thus you never get tired. And we will not live with the fear.”, said one of the animals. The lion became very happy to hear this. Every morning, he ate one of the animals in his cave. One Name this country!

day, it was the little rabbit’s turn, but the little rabbit didn’t want to be a meal of the lion. The lion was getting more and angrier because the rabbit was late. The little rabbit made a cunning plan. She spent some time in the forest. Finally, she came to the lion’s cave, but the lion was very angry. “You are so small for me, but you are late. Where were you?”, the lion yelled at the little rabbit. “Oh, my dear king!” said the little rabbit, “I came across with another lion while I was coming to your cave. I said I was going to my king’s cave, but he said he is the king and very bad things about you. He tried to eat me, but

Aunt Madge Day Care Day celebrations held under the theme ‘Community’

By Staff Reporter Thursday June 6th, Woodlands— The Aunt Madge Child Care Centre opened its doors to a number of essential community organizations to celebrate “Aunt Madge Child Care Day.” The day which was celebrated under the theme “Community”, presented representatives from the Montserrat Fire and Rescue Services (MFRS), Royal Montserrat Police Service (RMPS) and the Health Care Services. Students were also exposed to a number of community activities including market corner, Sunday school, banking and animal farming. Firefighters engaged in an interactive session with the youngsters, teaching them about the tools of a Firefighter and their use

as well as the activities of Firefighters. Community Nurse Donique Layne, stationed at the St. Johns Heath Centre described her interactive session with the students, she said, “I met with the little ones—what I did was to share with them some of the things we as health care providers do for children when they come to the clinic and hospital.”

RMPS Officer, Maleka Newell sharing on her session with the toddlers said, “We spoke to the children about what the police does…we don’t only lock up people, we help; we help them in various ways. We spoke to them about good touch bad touch. We shared poems with them about the police officer and what the Police Officer does.”

She also used the opportunity to encourage parents and the community to “refrain from telling our children that the only thing that a police officer does is lock up persons, that is not true. We are members of the community and we want to work together with the community to ensure our community is safe and children friendly.”

Bee population slowly declining...cont’d. from page 6

island’s leading local producers of honey. She has been supplying the island with honey since April 1982. Despite her experience in the business, Cynthia said she has had to overcome a number of devastating setbacks in her business over the years, which includes the 1995 volcanic eruption and 2017 hurricane Maria. Now her most recent challenge she claims is the Environmental Health fogging practice. She said since the fogging, she has seen a decline in her bee population. Cynthia suspects that the nectar a sugary substance which the plants produces and the bees and hummingbirds feeds on becomes contaminated with the chemicals released during the fogging. She believes it may also be responsible for a decline in the hummingbird population in her area. She said, “Not the bees alone. I have a five-finger tree and when it blossoms you would see plenty hummingbirds on it and now I don’t see one. The humming birds and the bees feed on the nectar,” she added, “before … hurricane Maria I had 45 hives when Maria came I was left with 22. I tried to build again, until I got 38 and now I have only 12.” Ms. Williams says that although the Environmental Health department informs individuals when they are conducting fogging and to lock up, she has no way of securing her bees, “you cannot close bees…the bees go on the trees and suck the nectar, they drop dead.”

Environmental Health Officer Cranston Aymer said the fogging is not harmful to human beings but is concocted for insects, “It is not harmful to human beings, it is mixed to kill mosquitos, insects. The smoke itself is just a dispense for the insecticide. The insecticide comes out in 0.05 microns, so it’s very, very small.” Ms. Williams, however, urges the government to consider alternative methods to treat with the mosquitos.

Rihanna’s fame both on and offline, with some US$570 million in revenue last year after just 15 months of business. She makes the majority of her money from touring and musical releases, according to Forbes, but also co-owns her Savage X Fenty lingerie line. In May, Rihanna launched a groundbreaking partnership with LVMH to launch a luxury

fashion brand based in Paris that will make ready-to-wear clothes, shoes and accessories. A new large-scale luxury label — especially one led by a black woman — is a huge development in the fashion world, with Rihanna’s line Fenty sitting alongside legacy brands like Dior, Louis Vuitton, Fendi and Givenchy at the conglomerate headed by Bernard Arnault.

Government predicts long drawn out case with Flow and Digicel Antigua News Room The Antigua and Barbuda government says it expects the High Court matter involving the two foreign telecommunications companies objecting to the plan to share the 850 megahertz spectrum with the state-owned utility company to “be heard over several years”. A government statement said that the matter had been discussed during the Cabinet meeting earlier this week and that three lawyers representing the state had been “invited to advise on the most appropriate defence which ought to be adopted” in the case brought by Digicel and Flow. Digicel said that it had taken the legal action because it wanted to shield its customers from “significant service

disruption and a negative impact on coverage.” The government is hoping that the High Court will bring about a resolution to the opposition by Digicel and Flow, formerly the British telecommunication giant, Cable and Wireless, to share the island’s spectrum with the stateowned Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA). Digicel claims that APUA has almost twice as much spectrum as either of the other two operators in the market, despite having less than 25 per

cent. “APUA is hoarding a scarce and valuable resource,” the statement said, adding “in any other market, this would be a cause for concern for the regulator, but uniquely in Antigua & Barbuda, APUA is also the Regulator”. In the statement, the Gaston Browne government said that the two telecommunications firms “are seeking to estop the Cabinet from dividing the 850 megahertz spectrum among Digicel, Flow and APUA/INET equally. “The Cabinet accepted the proposed defence put forward by the legal team, although there is certainty that this matter will continue to be heard over several years, by several levels of the courts, before a final decision is rendered,” the statement noted. It said that the Cabinet had further decided to bring before

Melford Nicholas the Parliament at its next sitting The Telecommunications Bill 2019. “The bill has been in draft form for several years; it had its first reading before, and has been through multiple consultations with stakeholders. The next sitting of Parliament will take place on June 20, 2019, when that Telecommunications Bill will have its second and third readings,” the statement added.

BARBADOS-CXC workers continue protest action

Antigua News Room Protest action by dozens of workers at the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), entered another day on Friday. The employees have taken protest action to voice concerns over a restructuring exercise at the council. Barbados Today reports that major restructuring changes started to unfold without notice and in the middle of negotiations with trade unions. It’s reported that last week, some workers were told that they would be made redundant at the end of June, while at least two others saw their positions advertised among numerous vacancies published on the CXC’s

website over the weekend. “The staff of the Caribbean Examinations Council has advised the Barbados Workers’ Union [BWU] that they are off the job,” reported the BWU’s Deputy Director of Industrial Relations Dionne Howard on Thursday morning. We’ve met with the workers, we have heard their concerns at this point. We have reached out to the company. We have shared the concerns and are awaiting word from them as to how soon we can have a discussion regarding the concerns.” In a statement, the BWU revealed restructuring discussions were to be

continued on June 3, but CXC’s management unilaterally determined the outcome when they posted advertisements for positions, which were on the table for discussion. “This action by the management was the final straw for the staff at the CXC who have been experiencing a number of challenges with the

management. The Executive Council has found the management of the CXC to be insulting and disrespectful, not only to the Secretariat but to the Staff of the Council. “It is unconscionable to post jobs currently held by persons on the market and those persons having no idea that their jobs are under threat. This, in no way, takes the shape of typical industrial relations practices and the Executive Council of The Barbados Workers’ Union understands the pressure and frustration of the workers and endorses the action taking place today,” the statement said, while revealing that the BWU remained open to returning to the negotiating table.

French Open 2019 | Rafael Nadal wins record 12th Roland Garros title

indianexpress.com Rafael Nadal claimed a record-stretching 12th French Open title by beating Austrian fourth seed Dominic Thiem 6-3 5-7 6-1 6-1 in a repeat of last year’s final on Sunday. The Spaniard, who now has 18 majors to his name, also becomes the first player to win the same Grand Slam title 12 times, going past Margaret Court’s 11 Australian Open titles. He took command by

winning a high-octane first set, but Thiem, who was on court for the fourth consecutive day after weather delays, stayed in the contest and fought back to go level. Nadal’s response was brutal as he won 16 of the first 17 points of the third set against a tiring Thiem, bagged it in less than half an hour. The 33-year-old, whose Roland Garros haul started on his debut year in 2005, cruised through the fourth

Toronto needs 1 more win to take Championship “We haven’t done anything yet,” is the mantra going into game five, although teams that take a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals have a 33-1 series record (.971). The only time a team with a 3-1 lead did not win the Finals was 2016 when the Cleveland Cavaliers rallied past the Warriors. Kevin Durant of the Golden State Warriors practiced Sunday with hopes of playing on Monday night, coach Steve Kerr said, and following the teams

assessment of how Durant feels afterwards. Officially his status is listed as questionable for game five, however: “It’s just having another powerful weapon out there, who can do some very dynamic things on the floor,” Curry said. “He will be very welcomed, I’ll tell you that much,” Warriors guard Klay Thompson said. “I think it’s pretty easy to realize we obviously miss him out there. He’s propelled us to two

championships in the last two years, so it’d be pretty storybook if he comes back and helps us do the same. … I know how badly he wants to be out there. He’s one of the best competitors I’ve ever been around.” It’s extraordinary that the Toronto Raptors have treated this whole series with a laser focus ‘taking care of business’ approach: “Toronto’s defense gives them a chance every night. Consistency wins…” On Twitter Magic Johson

wrote: “Last but not least Coach Nurse has been doing an amazing job with his strategies and the line ups that he’s choosing.” The city of Toronto and Canada are poised at the opportunity to earn a place in history as the first team outside the United States to win the NBA championship, playing in the True North. Toronto and The Toronto Raptors are on the brink of history!

Toronto Raptors one win away from NBA championship

TORONTO, Ontario —After 24 years in franchise history, the Toronto Raptor’s is one win away from a championship. In short, the Raptors have outplayed the Warriors, pressured them on defense, double-

teamed Stephen Curry, and attacked on offense, getting open shots and easy pickand-roll baskets. The Toronto Raptors have at the very least been a considerable discomfort and misery for the Golden

State Warriors, who were aiming to exploit the Raptors that seem vulnerable, then inevitable. But behind a brilliant performance from Kawhi Leonard and Kyle Lowry the Toronto Raptors are one

win away from the first NBA Championship in franchise history as the team focus on Monday night, game five, at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.
