MUSIC & THE MIND SOCIAL ACTION TOOKITS PRODUCED WITH PURPOSE

“If music is such an important aspect of people’s lives from the time they are born, why is it that it doesn’t really occur to us, as a society, to provide people with music when they can no longer do what is necessary to provide it for themselves? Music has power, and we need to remember to keep everyone plugged in!” --Petr Janata, PhD Neuroscientist Guggenheim Fellow, UC Davis, Center for Mind and Brain, Music Has Power™ Award Winne r

In Alive Inside and Una Vida, we witness the dramatic effects music has on the mind, memory, and spirit of elderly people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia (and in a couple of cases - mental illness and trauma). We learn that although millions of people in the United States develop some form of dementia as they age, little has been done to treat people beyond the use of pharmaceutical drugs. Oftentimes elderly patients are prescribed strong anti-psychotic drugs that are not appropriate for their condition. While holistic, restorative treatments have demonstrated great success, they are still not widely accepted or used.

ABOUT DEMENTIA AND ALZHEIMERS:

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, “Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life .” It is characterized by such symptoms as loss of memory, communication/language, reasoning and judgment, ability to focus and pay attention, and visual perception. Patients with dementia are seen as being generally confused and disoriented .

Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia. It gets worse over time, and is also characterized by memory loss and many of the same symptoms as dementia.

WHAT CAUSES ALZHEIMER’S?

Alzheimer’s Disease was named after German psychiatrist and neuropathologist Alois Alzheimer who first discovered it in 1906 . It is characterized by progressive degeneration of the brain (see the image above). What is important to know is that: • Alzheimer’s is not just a part of getting old but a traceable condition in the brain (Alzheimer’s affects the brain’s

nerve cells, or neurons, which in turn affect the brain’s ability to conduct basic tasks necessary to think, learn, and remember). • Alzheimer’s gets worse over time • Alzheimer’s has no cure (treatments only address symptoms)

GET INFORMED WHAT IS DEMENTIA? “Dementia is not a specific disease. It’s an overall term that describes a wide range of symptoms associated with a decline in memory or other thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person’s ability to perform everyday activities. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of cases. Vascular dementia, which occurs after a stroke, is the second most common dementia type. But there are many other conditions that can cause symptoms of dementia, including some that are reversible, such as thyroid problems and vitamin deficiencies .”

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT DEMENTIA “Dementia is often incorrectly referred to as “senility” or “senile dementia,” which reflects the formerly widespread but incorrect belief that serious mental decline is a normal part of aging. “

Watching Alive Inside and Una Vida, it is easy to be struck by just how attainable widespread alternate therapies for Dementia and Alzheimer’s sufferers could be. We also learn those who are the most impacted by Dementia and Alzheimer’s are the least equipped to fight for change. As Dan Cohen struggles to shift the minds of nursing home administrators who rely on drug treatments alone, it is easy to ask ourselves, “Why aren’t music and other restorative treatments already the norm?” We can help make it the norm. There are already campaigns, movements, and networks of people committed to this shift in place. All you have to do is Join In. This is a movement that touches people across boundaries of race, class, religion, geography, or ideology. Are you ready to take a stand and work for the kind of change we see when Henry comes to life? Will you take part in a movement to do what is right for elder human beings? You won’t be alone in this movement - and the possibilities this change can bring are wonderful.
