WELCOME MAKE YOUR CAREER THE ROAD TRANSPORT INDUSTRY Welcome to an industry that is the backbone of New Zealand. Our Road Transport Industry employs over 91,000 people in warehousing, postal services and transport, with 36,000 directly employed in Road Transport, and over 90% of all manufactured products are carried by a truck. Whether it’s breakfast cereal or the fuel for the car, almost everything we deal with is carried at some point by a professional in a truck. It was collected from where it was made, packaged and stored in a warehouse, before being carried to its final destination to be bought and used. But even before it was produced, the raw materials used to make or produce the goods were also transported, often from another country. This is what we call logistics, the process of how we move something, and every business, farm or factory has a supply chain – these are the elements that make up chain. Why transport as a choice of career? Because ‘we need you’. That is the call from our industry, as we have a shortage of new people - we need more than 2800 new drivers every year for the next 10 years. If our economy grows like it has, then we need even more new people with the skills to keep New Zealand working. But what does this mean for you? Thirty-percent 30% of those leaving secondary school will progress to university, but after just one year, 1/5th of those students will drop out before year two. So choosing a career after leaving school is a challenge to discover what really appeals to the individual. You might want to consider working and learning at the same time, and the Road Transport Industry can help you find a career, with just a full car licence. A career can start with a forklift licence followed by a truck licence, and although there are minimum time limits between progressing through the truck licence system, similar to passing through to a full car licence, you can also be employed through this time. Driving skills learned will help be a professional driver and allow a move into logistics planning/ dispatching, managing people and vehicles, support services such as human resources and health and safety. Even starting a business can be done as little as two years of driving experience, as a truck owner-driver. Trucks aren’t like they used to be, as technology means now that we have smart devices to locate and monitor vehicles and loads and plan destinations. The vehicles are safer too with anti-lock brake and Electronic Brake Systems, lane-departure warning devices, blind-spot warning devices and adaptive cruise control using radar sensors. All these electronic devices mean a safer driving environment, with trucks even warning of breakages or impending maintenance. The first step is to simply talk to a trucking company. Find one in your area and call the transport manager, or even better, call in and talk to them in person. There’s a good chance they’re looking for people. You might like the look of their trucks or you may know someone who is a truck driver; either way, introduce yourself. We look forward to meeting you. Megan turned her passion into a rewarding and successful career.

VER SINCE SHE GOT HER FIRST DRIVER LICENCE AT SIXTEEN, Megan Oliver has loved driving. In fact, she loves it so much, the 23-year-old has turned her passion into a successful and rewarding career as a truck driver for Allied Concrete, Canterbury. It wasn’t always the career she had planned however. After she left school, Megan gained a qualification in beauty therapy but, after a year in the industry, she decided it wasn’t what she had hoped for. Going from being a beauty therapist to a licenced truck driver is quite a career change, and Megan admits that it’s one she may not have pursued if it weren’t for the encouragement of her partner. “I just didn’t think of it as a job I could do,” says Megan. “But looking back, I don’t know what was stopping me. I’ve always had an interest in trucks. When I would see one of the large Class 5 truck and trailers on the road, I always dreamed of driving one someday! It just took a little push from my partner for me to decide to take the initiative and gain my Class 2 licence and enter the commercial road transport industry.” After some initial experience working for a freighting company, where she gained her Class 4 learner licence, Megan joined Allied Concrete in April
2016. Since then, she has obtained her Class 4 full licence, which allows her to drive rigid trucks of up to 30 tonnes, and is nearing completion of her National Certificate in Goods Service (Heavy Vehicle Driver) (Level 3) through MITO. “I wanted to get qualified in order to challenge myself and gain recognition for my knowledge and experience in the industry,” says Megan. “As an on-the-job learner, I can put the skills I’m learning straight into practice – which is definitely a benefit if you’re more of a hands-on or visual learner like myself. Being a qualified truck driver will allow me to progress my career within the industry and I’m incredibly fortunate that I can accomplish this through my work - while I’m getting paid!” Allied Concrete Area Manager, Simon Packman, says “As a business, we’re always looking for ways to encourage more young people into the industry. Megan is more than excited by the new role. “It’s a two to three year internal leadership programme that may eventually lead to a manager position. You get exposed to every single part of the concrete industry – whether it’s sales, batching, testing or slumping. I’m really looking forward to the challenge and added responsibility.” Driving will still be part of the job though and Megan’s certainly happy about that. “After all - I really do love it,” she laughs. “The freedom of being out on the road all the time, and not being stuck inside, really resonates with me. Plus, I get to do my part in helping to rebuild Christchurch. We’ve helped with some amazing buildings and subdivisions which is extremely rewarding.”

Everything people need in their daily lives is delivered by trucks: the goods in shops and supermarkets, our agricultural and manufacturing products and all the services we take for granted. PROFESSIONAL DRIVER What’s the job? The professional truck driver has one of the most important jobs in the New Zealand economy. He or she is personally responsible for literally millions of dollars’ worth of machinery and freight. The job can be extremely rewarding and is fantastic for those who enjoy getting out-and-about and dealing directly with customers and suppliers.
Achieve qualifications while you are earning! You need a heavy vehicle licence to drive the various types of vehicles prevalent in the industry. Heavy vehicle licences are obtained by passing practical tests. The time it takes to qualify for each test is reduced if you undergo formal on-the-job training. Training includes qualifications such as the National Certificate in Goods Service (Core Skills) (Level 2), the National Certificate in Goods Service (Heavy Vehicle Driver) (Level 3) and the National Certificate in Commercial Road Transport (Heavy Vehicle Operator) (Level 3).
The future Your job prospects are extremely good. The ongoing growth of the road freight industry means that transport operators are consistently on the lookout for new qualified drivers. The experience you gain driving for someone else will give you the opportunity to become an owner driver, fleet owner or transport business owner as you become more familiar with the industry.

WAREHOUSING, DISTRIBUTION & LOGISTICS What’s the job? In the operation of warehousing, distribution and logistics you are responsible for the efficient and safe storage, handling and loading of large quantities of freight. As the dispatch and distribution of freight are so critical to the industry and the New Zealand economy these roles require a high degree of professionalism.
Achieve qualifications while you are earning! The National Certificate in International Freight Forwarding (Level 3 and 4) programmes provide students with the knowledge and skills to successfully engage in the international movement of freight. The National Certificate in Distribution (Level 2) covers the skills required for the safe processing and handling of goods in a distribution facility, while the National Certificate in Domestic Relocations Operations (Level 2) and the National Certificate in International Relocations Operations (Level 2) are designed for those already employed in either the international or domestic sector of the relocations industry.
The future Once you have gained the necessary skills and experience you can set your sights on becoming an operations manager, dispatch supervisor or eventually a general manager. Your experience will also present other opportunities within the industry including as a professional driver or in support service roles.
