he warmer seasons are upon us and with them comes a sense of ease, relaxation and rest. As we restyle our wardrobes to flow with the warmer temperatures, our clothes can reflect what the season means to us. Clothed in relaxed summer outfits, we create lasting memories of long lingering days, backyard barbecues with friends, and our laughter drifting into the haze of the evening sun. The clothes we wear in these sublime moments remind us of the delight of these days for years to come. With memories in mind, this seasons spring/summer style is all about building a timeless, trans-seasonal wardrobe of hazy neutral tones reflecting nature’s natural beauty and easy silhouettes to weave into your wardrobe at any point of the year.

Du unedin-based design house Company of Strangers offer trans-seasonal designs, made to last and reconsider our perspective of seasonal wear. Sara Munro of Company of Strangers shares the innovative thought behind Black Star, their latest collection: “Company of Strangers continue to push the ‘anti season’ concept, by offering another beautiful timeless collection intended to be complimentary to any of the pieces from their previous collections. Letting go of the term - ‘what’s in for this season?’, and pushing - ‘what can I wear forever?’. A colour palette inspired by dusty summer road trips and the need for effortless and versatile garments, this collection offers hand dyed cacao silks, smokey blues, and a bold reverse print double plaid in ivory or black. For all those road trips, for all those work days, for those anything days.”

UILD is a central hub of Dunedin design, hosting an array of jewellery, fashion, homewares and more from local designers. Additions to a timeless summer wardrobe can be found among the racks of authentic Dunedin designs. Chairperson of Dunedin Designed Inc, co-ordinator of GUILD, Craig Scott shares, “the great thing about GUILD is that our fashion designers each bring their own individual style to the store, so there is something for everyone. From a casual day in the sun, to

summer wedding vibes, each piece in store is limited or one-off, so regardless, it is something you will treasure, and look fabulous at the same time.” Scott reflects on the trans-seasonal nature of style, “in terms of a Dunedin spring/summer, I definitely see an awareness of unpredictability of the weather. Pieces with merino fabric, or light-weight jackets. The designers definitely cater to four seasons in one day.” Three Dunedin designers featured at GUILD share the philosophies behind their designs.

Christopher Motion ‘‘I’m focused on creating unique designs primarily for the menswear market. Many of my garments are influenced by minimalism. A lot of the design process comes from what I personally like and would want to buy for myself. Subtle panel lines and overall balance are important to me, what feels instinctively right. I wanted to create garments that are long term investments for your wardrobe, so using muted tones plays into this and also for easy layering - which I’m a fan of. I also like to create silhouettes/ fits that make these easy to move in and throw on or off as the weather changes.’’ Brittany Lara ‘‘Brittany Lara is a small production business where everything is made by myself, everything is hand cut in my studio located in Dunedin, using 90% natural fibres like cotton, wool, linen, and silk. Some are blends with man-made fibres. I strive to make all of my garments to the highest quality and am passionate about slowing
down the fashion system. The majority of my clothing made to order so that no garments go to waste. I want to create clothing that is for everyone and am happy to create garments for custom measurements.’’ Darlene Gore ‘‘I am influenced by classic design and beautiful fabrics, I consider what’s in fashion at the moment and also what I think women look fashionable in, which can be different things. I like to approach my designs with versatility and inclusivity, so a lot of my designs can be worn by many. I have just started using a lot of beautiful vintage fabrics in my designs, including vintage fabrics as coat linings. I really enjoy being at GUILD because of how they operate as a collective, so I can keep the prices accessible and meet the community, I can meet the customer and if they need I can accommodate to them. Every thing is handmade by me, with a very slow fashion approach. These are garments you can keep in your wardrobe forever. I hope that people pick out the things that work well for them and have longevity.’’

FENCES
OUTDOOR AREAS of
to be proud
Having outdoor features like paths, fences and decks are what give our homes street appeal and make a great first impression for visitors - or even potential buyers.
Wood and concrete finished complement each other in this outdoor patio. This rear wall is Resene Aspiring with paint effect in Resene FX Paint Effects medium, coloured with Resene Moon Mist. The right breeze block wall is painted in Resene Moon Mist. The bench seat is Resene Aspiring. The

one well they can be the final touches that elevate your home to being a place that not only looks great, but is practical and a pleasure
to live in. But where do you start with these outdoor features, to make them look their best and keep them looking best?
WOODEN DECKS
An expanse of wood in the backyard can make it look glamorous as well as being highly functional. But a faded, mouldy deck with rickety slats, can make your whole house feel run down. While a stain is often a typical way to finish or re-colour a deck, you can also use an oil like Resene Furniture and Decking Oil for a natural effect that will still protect the wood from the elements. The first step in reviving an older, weathered deck is to check for loose boards, popped nails, as well as any signs of rot or decay, particularly around the joists. Next, treat any moss or mould with Resene Moss & Mould Killer then give it a wash with
Resene Timber and Deck Wash. Sand off any marks or bumps. For pine or macrocarpa decks, stain with two coats of Resene Woodsman either in a natural shade such as Resene Woodsman Driftwood or try something different like Resene Woodsman Touchwood. If you want your pine deck to resemble Kwila try staining it in Resene Woodsman Cedar or Resene Woodsman Dark Oak. Experiment with shades that will work with the colour scheme of your house and fence. For decks made from Kwila or other hardwood, use Resene Kwila Timber Stain. Leave new Kwila or hardwood decks for at least four to five weeks before staining if possible, so tannins leach out and the timber to open up a little so it better accepts the stained finish. For a completely different look, you could paint your deck in Resene Walk-on to complement your house. Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path will help ensure the surface is hard-wearing and safe. If you’re opting for a dark colour, choose a Resene CoolColour to reflect more heat and help keep bare feet cooler.

Top tip: If your fence touches the ground, place a piece of thin board or paint drop cloth along the bottom of the fence to prevent soil from getting on the brush.
PATHS AND PATIOS
Concrete or paved paths and patios can also be painted to suit your exterior design plans. The key things to consider in the finished result is that it’s hard-wearing and non-slip. To prepare the surface for painting treat any mould or moss with Resene Moss & Mould Killer. If the surface hasn’t previously been painted or there’s no paint you wish to keep, give it a waterblast to remove dirt and grime. If you do want to preserve any existing paint, don’t waterblast. Instead wash with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash. Prepare then paint with two coats, using a product like Resene Walk-on paving paint or Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path. Add Resene SRG grit into Resene Walk-on for a non-slip finish. Available in a wide range of colours both products are designed to make sure the finished surface can stand up to all that walking over it and will remain safe in wet conditions. When painting outside over the hotter months start early in the day. Try and avoid painting in the direct sun. If you find your waterborne paint is drying too fast, use Resene Hot Weather Additive to slow down the dry time, giving you more time to get a quality paint finish. Come and see your local Resene ColorShop team for advice on colours, prep and painting for your next project.
Pergolas can transform your outdoors space. They are a good way of connecting indoor and outdoor spaces and are ideal for climbing plants such as roses, jasmine and grapevines. For a natural look to showcase the natural beauty of time, choose a Resene Waterborne Woodsman wood stain. This pergola is stained in Resene Woodsman Cedar for a warm striking look, which is still soft against the landscape. A flaking or faded fence will make even the fanciest gardens look a little unloved. Luckily, touching up, repainting or re-staining a fence is a relatively straight-forward, fast job. For wooden fences, give them a thorough wash with Resene Timber and Deck Wash after checking for any loose boards or unstable posts. Then either stain or paint. It’s a fairly simple job, so a good one to rope the whole family into helping with! For a stain use Resene Woodsman in a shade that will match your house exterior and garden. Darker colours, like Resene Pitch Black, can help the fence recede and blend with plants so can be useful if you want your section to feel larger with less of an imposing boundary. If you have brightly flowering plants you might want to choose a shade that shows them off to best advantage. You can also paint your wooden fence rather than stain, with any shade of Resene Lumbersider. On the upside a painted fence finish will usually last longer than a stained finish. A stained finish usually needs re-coating faster but only requires minimal prep – usually a quick clean and you are ready to re-stain. If you’re painting, particularly in a darker colour, opt for Resene CoolColour, available in most Resene finishes and colours, to help reduce heat build-up in the paint and fence. To paint a corrugated iron fence, clean the surface first with Resene Roof and Metal Wash using a stiff brush. Thoroughly rinse and leave to dry. If the existing paint is in sound condition, you can paint straight over it with two coats of your chosen fence colour in Resene Lumbersider allowing dry time in between.

t’s no different to building a house, putting a recipe together or even trying to DIY kitchen joinery. It’s important to know where you are going, and to allow for all elements of the design to be worked on, improved and then finalised before the task is even started. Such a lot of time and money can be wasted on bad advice and unthought out ideas, so think ahead and engage people that can help you to achieve the end result, and in the time frame you are thinking about (it’s always before Christmas). Landscape design is very much about bringing the client, the site, and the designer together to create a garden that is truly inspirational, functional, and fits its intended use and clients wishes. This process takes time, and in reality, can even take years to get to the end theme intended. In today’s environment with many designers and landscape contractors busy, it is important to think ahead in this planning process. Typically, the process starts with an onsite consultation. There is often an initial cost to meet with the client and to look over the site. Once the brief is finalised, the landscape architect or designer will put together a rough sketch of the proposed design and
As with all projects, the planning of a new garden is always the best place to start.
PLANNING AHEAD
materials palette. These are called concept plans and are not detailed specification plans, but rather an overall concept of the proposed garden. Depending on the size of the project and designer used, these plans can cost anywhere upwards of $3000. Once the garden concept is finalised there may also be more details and added costs in building specification and planting plans; so, as you can see planning is important to ensure the process runs smoothly. From here it’s a matter of who is carrying out the garden build, so if you have a landscape contractor in mind, they will need to price out the work and book in the build, which under the current environment could be up to six months ahead. Depending on the design and the build, these projects can be costly, so having a budget in mind before the project starts is a great point to start in the design process. Think of it this way, it’s no different to adding onto your house, or building a garage, it’s quite an investment, and as such having a realistic budget will allow the project to be carried out with quality materials and with professionals. LIFE/STYLE
URING the first lockdown in 2020, Lucy Corry was surprised at people freaking out about how they’d feed themselves without takeaways. The Wellington food writer believes that many have become so reliant on easy food such as takeaways, subscription services, and packet meals that they’ve simply forgotten about humble food prepared from scratch in the home kitchen. ‘‘People have sort of lost that art of the ordinary homecooked meal,’’ she reflects. ‘‘And as much I love going out to eat, ordinary homecooking is what sustains us, and what you need inspiration for on a daily basis.’’ Corry’s debut recipe book
Homecooked provides just that inspiration, packed as it is with easily prepared meal ideas based on what’s seasonally available in New Zealand. The idea for the book grew out of a recipe column that she used to write entitled ‘Three ways with...’, which focused on one seasonal ingredient, and offering three ways to prepare it. It’s certainly an idea that has currency at present, when many products from overseas are difficult to obtain. ‘‘Especially in New Zealand, the rest of the world is increasingly far away,’’ Corry says. ‘‘You don’t need to eat asparagus from the United States in March - you can wait until October and eat New Zealand
asparagus which will be much nicer, and cheaper, and you’re buying New Zealand made. If you’re buying fruit and vegetables it makes sense to buy them as close to the ground they came out of as possible.’’ Growing up on a Waikato farm, she was fortunate to have parents whose interest in food ‘‘went far beyond the meat and three vege of the time’’. Always eating at the table together, there was much discussion about food and related issues. By osmosis Corry absorbed an interest in food that developed into a passion that has served her well across her career in journalism. ‘‘I learnt the idea of food as a source of creativity, and social glue - it’s a way to bring people together,’’ she says. ‘‘And it’s a way to learn about people too. I have found as a journalist that if you feel like you have nothing in common with someone you can always steer the conversation around to food. It relaxes people.’’ Corry began writing about restaurants for a Wellington community paper as a way of building a portfolio to apply to journalism school. She then worked as a reporter before taking on a feature role at the Waikato Times, where a lot of the finer points of food writing were learnt. Later, in London, Corry worked as features editor for the British Press Association, where she fortuitously coincided with a golden period in the culinary life of the city. ‘‘It was just before the Global Financial Crisis, when PR companies had buckets of money to spend,’’ Corry relates. ‘‘I got to eat in lots of incredible restaurants in London. It was a great way to get into food then.’’ Having returned to New Zealand to start a family she missed that side of London life, and so Corry launched a food blog at the suggestion of a friend’s relative. It was something she continued with as a hobby even after returning to fulltime journalism a few years later. In recent years Corry has won several awards at the New Zealand Food Media Awards, co-authored the Hiakai: Modern Maori Cuisine book with chef Monique Fiso, and is the current president of Food Writers NZ.
And now she has her own debut recipe book on the shelves, which Corry says is both exciting and nerve-wracking. Homecooked is very much aimed at the ordinary New Zealand home cook, who may be limited in terms of ingredients or budget. It’s the ideal gateway for those who may be lacking in confidence in the kitchen. ‘‘Think about the food that you like, and look at what is available in the shops,’’ Corry says. ‘‘A lot of people are afraid of cooking, but you can start at a more beginner level. Think about the food you like to eat, and start there. It doesn’t have to be hard, complicated, or expensive.’’
Bourdain doco in Film Festival Among the fare in this year’s New Zealand International Film Festival is a documentary on the late food personality Anthony Bourdain. Morgan Neville’s Roadrunner relates the chef, author, and TV star’s life through interviews with those who knew him. ‘‘Roadrunner is a suitably colourful and energetic tribute to a life thoroughly lived,’’ Adrian Hatwell writes.
