BREEDING FOR THE FUTURE’S 20TH ANNUAL PRODUCTION SALE! Greetings!

Thank you for your interest in our 2018 bull sale offering. It is hard to believe we’ve been doing this for 20 years already. Time has gone by too quickly. We’re very grateful for all of the people we’ve met, the good friends we’ve made and the longtime customers in these last 20 years. We are truly, blessed!

As we reflect upon where we’ve come since our first sale, it is easy to see the improvements that have been made in Simmental cattle. So, we take our hats off to all the Simmental breeders who’ve worked, tirelessly, to change the perceptions that have plagued our breed in the past.

Personally, we at Wilkinson Farms Simmentals have been able to maintain maternal and performance traits (which Simmentals have always been known for) and improve calving ease, maternal calving ease and carcass traits, as we have worked to progress our herd. It is, and always has been, our goal to improve our genetics, because we believe and know it is possible to produce Simmentals who can do it all.

Overall, from top to bottom, this is probably the most uniform set of bulls we’ve ever offered. Through our extensive ET and AI efforts, we present for your inspection, bulls that flesh-easily, gain well and will be structurally-sound for years to come. With traits such as calving ease, above average growth and maternal being significantly important to us, as well, we encourage you to look at the average EPD’s for this set of bulls, then compare them to the breed average percentile chart on page 8.

We’re also providing a small, but powerful set of Red and Black SimAngusTM cross bulls from which to select. Some are ET and are out of top cows in our herd. We believe this to be the best way to offer hybrid genetics that will give our customers the greatest benefit.

We look forward to visiting with you about this group of bulls. Visitors are welcome to our Ranch. All ranch visitors will receive $100 off any sale day purchase. Come early on sale day for complimentary breakfast burritos and refreshments being served at 9:15 am. A hearty lunch will be available from 11:15 am – 1:00 pm.

Wilkinson Farms Simmentals retains 1/3 semen interest on every bull in the 2018 offering, unless otherwise stated in the individual comments or from the sale block. If semen sales are made, the new bull owner will receive payment for sold semen on their bull after expenses are covered. We reserve the right to charge sales fees/expenses for semen sold on said bull. The action of purchasing a bull from Wilkinson Farms Simmentals by auction, or on the farm, will assume buyer agrees to these terms. The above listed terms are negotiable, but must be agreed upon verbally or in writing, no later than 2 hours prior to the sale. Please contact us as soon as possible, to make arrangements.

All cattle sell under the terms and conditions of the American Simmental Association.

Any cattle going to CANADA will be delivered to the nearest ND/CAN border crossing facility. All costs for testing & export are the responsibility of the buyer.

From west I 94: Take exit 248, then right to follow the south paved frontage road to the west until it takes a sharp left. Go south 11 miles. When the pavement ends & turns into gravel, continue south for 2 miles to the intersection of 73rd Ave SE & 49th St. SE. Turn left & go 3 ½ miles. Turn north [left] at our mail on our driveway to the ranch.

Family Highlights

Aaron & Randi’s boys, Dawson (2) & Quinn (1) make frequent visits to the ranch.

They always brighten everyone’s day with their laughter, hugs and kisses, and enthusiastic imitations of tractors and cows.

Jared’s children, Oakley (5) & Adelaide (3) Schlenker sat on the fence-line feeding panels and watched as calves came off the trailers at weaning, last fall.

Mike & Amber (Schlenker) Michalak welcomed their first baby, Myles Bruce into the world in September 2017. Their beautiful little family has made their home in a suburb of Denver, CO.

Alaura Marie was born to Jordan & Susan Schlenker in February 2017. Now almost a year old, Alaura comes to the ranch often to ride with her dad in the tractor and to see the cows. She recently added “moo” to her vocabulary.

Neva Ross(1 1/2) visited the ranch in December 2017. She loved riding in the tractor with Grandpa during chores. Neva lives in Michigan with her parents, David & Makayla (Schlenker) Ross and is getting a little sister in April 2018.

Terry received the 2017 Soil Health & Quality Award from the NCRS.

Grandpa Elroy Schlenker celebrated his 85th birthday. He’s a rock in our grain operation; digging fields in the spring and fall, doing machinery maintenance and combining during harvest. We love and appreciate him very much!

Mason Elroy Schlenker made his arrival the day after Thanksgiving. Born to proud parents, Megan Badinger & Micah Schlenker, he has won our hearts with his sweet little smiles and bright blue eyes.

BELOW IS A QUICK REFERENCE TO AN EXPLANATION OF EPD’S: kidney, pelvic and heart fat. 3) hot carcass weight 4) rib eye area. A (–) EPD is better.

Marbling (MRB) marbling score.

Indexes: The last two columns in the EPD section are fairly new to the Simmental breed, but interesting, they are $ indexes. Though EPD’s allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes blend EPD’s & economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line.

All Purpose Index: (API) It is exactly what it says, all purpose.

This index includes every trait that can be calculated: calving ease, pounds at weaning and yearling, keeping replacements back, milking ability and stayability, then the calf crop. It took into consideration, some being retained as replacements, then the rest being fed out and sold grade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): This index is to be used if all calves are going to a feedlot. It evaluates a sire only for use on mature cows with all calves put on feed and sold grade and yield. No other factors were figured in.

Using API and TI: First determine which index to use. If you’re breeding heifers and keeping replacements, use API. If all calves are going to the feedlot and finished, use TI.

Expected Progeny Differences “EPD’s” are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using the EPD differences between two sires EPD’s represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. (Listed below are the units ASA EPD’s are expressed in).

(Average EPD’s are on the bottom of the percentile table above ) Calving Ease (CE) percentage of unassisted births when used on heifers.

Birth Weight (BW) pounds of birth weight.

Weaning Weight (WW) pounds of weaning weight.

Yearling Weight (YW) pounds of yearling weight.

Maternal Calving Ease (MCE) percentage of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.

Maternal Milk (MM) pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW) pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

Stayability (Stay) percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age.

Carcass Weight (CW) pounds of carcass weight.

Yield Grade (YG) yield grade score.

Yield grade is an indication of the yield of red meat within a carcass.

• Hetero Black & Homo Polled Well I have to say, I was a bit disappointed when this guy came out a bull. He was supposed to be my outcross black heifer with the well balanced numbers. He turned out nicely topping his contemporary group with indexes of 114 WW, 109 YW and 116 REA. His dam is one of my favorite young red cows.
