$50 off bulls taken home sale day. If purchaser requests at time of settlement, we will assist in making delivery of bulls. Free delivery of bulls within 150 miles. For bulls traveling beyond 150 miles, the most economical trucking will be arranged, and the 150 mile credit will be applied towards the delivery cost. We will make special delivery arrangements and discounts for large volume buyers on an individual basis. Free delivery will be at Brush Country Bulls convenience, and will begin after January 15th.
Cattle Care Option
-If bulls are not taken sale day, they will be left at Tom Brothers Ranch and fed for no charge until January 15th. Tom Brothers Ranch will keep your bulls for $2.50/day after January 15th. Tom Brothers Ranch is not responsible for accidents to bulls kept at Tom Brothers Ranch after the sale. The bulls become your property when they are sold. We suggest you insure your purchase.

Herd Health
Herd Vet - Dr. Ronnie Ussery, Atascosa Veterinary Clinic Bull were dewormed with Dectomax injectable 11/1/12. Bulls were boostered with Ultrabac-7, ViraSheild 6, and StayBred VL5 on 11/20/12. Bulls conform to TAHC standards for Trichimoniasis Free Certification. Health papers will be in order for bulls to pass for both interstate and international travel. Bulls are current on their respiratory, 7-way, and Vibrio/Lepto vaccinations.

Simmental $ Indexes
Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in – blending EPDs & economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry & dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes. All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers & mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained, & the remaining heifers & steers put on feed & sold grade & yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed & sold grade & yield. Ratio - An expression of an animal’s performance for a particular trait relative to the herd or contemporary group average. It is calculated for most traits as:

Brush Country Guarantee
Every bull is guaranteed to be sound on sale day and has passed a breeding soundness exam performed within 60 days of the sale. Every bull selling carries a 100% guarantee for one breeding season, provided the bull is managed for proper and acceptable nutritional and physical health, not to exceed six months beyond sale day. In the event a customer has a problem with a bull (health, injury or death) prior to or during the bull’s first breeding season, the customer should immediately contact a Brush Country Bulls representative to report a claim. A veterinarian’s statement of the problem will be required and Brush Country Bulls reserves the right to have the bull returned if deemed necessary. A replacement bull of mutually agreed upon quality will be provided if Brush Country Bulls has one available with delivery distance to the customer not to exceed the 150 mile free delivery. If a satisfactory replacement bull is not available, the customer will be given a full credit (minus salvage value of the original bull) to be used in a future Brush Country Bulls Sale. Brush Country Bulls will not be held responsible under any circumstances for any settlement amount exceeding the purchase price of the bull.

What is a SimAngus & a SimAngus™ HT?
The American Simmental Association (ASA) recently added the designation of SimAngus™ HT (Heat Tolerant) to their promotion. SimAngus™ HT is a SimAngus™ with at least 1/8 Brahman. A SimAngus™, to be exact, must have at least 1/4 Angus and 1/4 Simmental and the combination of the two needs to add to 3/4 or more. To get the SimAngus™ designated to HT, the animal must possess at least 1/8 Brahman blood. So a 5/8 Simmental 1/4 Angus 1/8 Brahman is a SimAngus™ HT. If you breed a Brangus to a Simmental, you get 1/2 Simmental 3/8 Angus 1/8 Brahman, which is also a SimAngus™ HT. When you breed purebred Simbrah females to an Angus, you get 3/8 Simmental 1/8 Brahman 1/2 Angus, which is also a SimAngus™ HT. Both parents need to be in the ASA database to qualify for registration.

American Angus Association EPD & PRODUCTION Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire's calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed. Yearling Height EPD (YH), is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit yearling height, expressed in inches, compared to the that of other sires. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. MATERNAL Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire's daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire's genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf's weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. to daughters of other sires. Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size. CARCASS Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
$ Index Definitions
Group/progeny (Carc Grp/ Pg and Usnd Grp/Pg) reflects the number of contemporary groups and the number of carcass and ultrasound progeny included in the analysis. $VALUE INDEXES are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. Quality Grade ($QG) $QG represents the quality grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $QG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on improving quality grade. The carcass marbling (Marb) EPD contributes to $QG. Yield Grade ($YG) $YG represents the yield grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $YG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on red meat yield. It provides a multi-trait approach to encompass ribeye, fat thickness and weight into an economic value for red meat yield. Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

About the Brush Country Group
Working together is essential to success, especially in the harsh, dry climate of the Brush Country in south Texas. Located about an hour south of San Antonio, just off Interstate 37 near Campbellton, the historic Tom Brothers Ranch is the home to the Brush Country Bull development and sale.
“Our family began ranching here in 1857, but started in the seedstock business here in the late 1950’s. We are extremely excited about the opportunity to restart the program with the help of so many other experienced breeders,” says Ellen Tom of Tom Brothers.
Ellen and her uncle Philip operate the Tom Brothers Ranch.
Ellen represents the 6th generation of family to operate the ranch and along with her uncle, Phillip Tom mange the cows, feedlot, hunting and other enterprises on the ranch. In total there are six breeders cooperating to populate the bull development center and offer a seedstock package with options designed specifically for the needs of producers in the area.
The “dean” of breeders involved in the group is Sally Buxkemper owner of RX Simbrah, Ballinger Texas. Having been in the seedstock business herself for 50 years, she was a pioneer in the use of Brahman genetics and one of the original developers of the American Simbrah. Today Sally still produces heat adapted seedstock using Simmental in combination with red and black Angus. By focusing on economically important trait improvement, retained heterosis and cows that thrive in southern climates, Sally and RX Simbrah have maintained a leadership position in the genetics business. Sally was a 2011 inductee into the Cowgirl Hall of Fame by the American Quarter Horse Association for her years of service to the ranching business in this country.

You’ll find Premier Beef and the Brad Leen family ranch in Southeast Texas between Austin and College Station near the town of Thrall. The Bermuda pastures mixed with patches of good farmland make this great country for cattle and agriculture production. “We chose this part of the country because of the opportunity for our family business and the potential to make and impact in the beef industry here in Texas”, said Brad. “The Simmental business was incredibly successful here back in the 80’s, but was too slow to make practical change. Today we offer a much improved product with great calving ease, solid color and do-ability in addition to the growth and muscle customers expect”. Brad and his family operate their SimAngus based seedstock operation with their customer’s needs placed in the forefront.

For Ford’s Double S Ranch at Thrall, Texas a positive change came in the late 90’s when Tom and Sandy Ford made the move to black Simmental genetics in response to a changing beef business. With the return to the ranch of Dustin Ford and his wife Heidi after graduating from Tarleton State University, infusions of new cattle and ideas came together to help shape the operation that is today. According to Dustin, “Since that time, we’ve added SimAngus to our purebred program and have set significant genetic focus on carcass value traits in addition to providing the problem free maternal genetics that our customer’s need to be successful.” Dustin and Heidi have two sons Justin and Cameron. The ranch is owned by Tom and Sandy Ford. With more than The Dusty Ford Family, of Ford’s Double S 30 years experience in the restaurant industry in addition to Ranch the seedstock business, The Ford’s bring a wealth of understanding as to how the beef supply chain functions and how crucial starting with high value genetics is to the profitability of the entire system. Tom started his career with Sirloin Stockade corp. and is now the owner/C.E.O. of the company. Sirloin Stockade owns/operates three different restaurant concepts, Sirloin Stockade, Montana Mike’s and Coyote Canyon. Fillegonia Cattle Co. is located in central Texas near Troy. Owned and operated by Joe and Beth Mercer, the operation strives to breed and improve a heat adapted combination of Simmental with Red Angus genetics, for more than 20 years. “This combination really works for our customers. Whether it is in the traditional 5/8, 3/8 combination of purebred Simbrah, of an updated percentage based on functionality and value, these cattle now offer a great combination of maternal, longevity traits and terminal value,” says Beth. Stallion Angus Ranch, located in the Texas Hill Country, has been raising black Angus cattle for ten years. Owners George and Jennifer San Filippo are progressive-minded cattle producers and believe in using available tools to produce exceptional Angus seedstock cattle to ensure customers that purchases and progeny will meet or exceed their expectations. Stallion Angus Ranch is one of the few Angus seedstock operations in Texas utilizing DNA diagnostic testing via Pfizer’s High Density 50K nucleotide polymorphism markers to continue to high-grade the genetics of its herd. Partnered with some of the best Angus breeders in the country, Stallion Angus Ranch has improved its herd to include ownership in some of the industry’s best dams and bulls. While this sale is a new endeavor for the breeders as a group, every one of the participants has been in the seedstock business for more than 20 years. “Together we can provide the genetics people need regardless of the part of the country these bulls end up”, says Brad Leen of Premier Genetics. According to Beth Mercer, “The bulk of the bulls we offer will feature a percentage of Brahman genetics to fit the maternal needs of the region, but our SimAngus™ and Angus bull offering is designed to add value to the heat adapted genetics that already dominate the cow herd in this region”.
