As a family, we take raising seedstock seriously. The challenge of bettering our genetics year after year is as exciting as it is rewarding and we couldn’t imagine being in any other industry or occupation.

When the commercial cattleman sells feeder calves, his goal is take to town a set of calves to be proud of. A uniform set of healthy calves is what he aims to sell, and that’s what feeders want to buy. Shouldn’t your bull supplier offer you the same product?

Our program does. This sale is unique in the large sire groups we offer. By providing the opportunity to purchase high quality, guaranteed bulls of similar lineage, we hope our genetics are a part of why you’re proud to haul those calves to town.

This 2013-2014 fall/winter/spring has handed us quite a few weather extremes. From the tragic fall storm “Atlas” affecting ranchers West of us, to heavy late fall rains here and the bothersome, frigid “Polar Vortex” temperatures these last few months, we have truly tested this year’s sale offering. Weaning time for our 2013 calf crop came later than ideal due to muddy lots and several inches of rain (which we are thankful for). While the bulls had a month less than normal this year to develop, we are proud to offer an even better set of bulls than last year. Environment tested bulls that won’t melt during breeding season is what we strive to produce and these range ready boys are a great example of that effort.

The heifer offering is an exciting one this year- several females that would fit into any seedstock or commercial program alike. Until Feb 19, these heifers were developed right alongside our own replacement females. They aren’t dressed up and pig fat- they’re ready to be cows when you take them home. ** Don’t forget to check out heifer lot 339. 100% of the proceeds go to the Ranchers Relief Fun to benefit fellow South Dakota ranchers affected by the Atlas Blizzard.

Scrotal Measurements

Scrotal measurements were taken 1/29/14. The actual measurements plus one adjusted for a year of age are both printed in the catalog.

Breeding Soundness

Since bulls will be 11 months of age average by sale day, many are too young to be evaluated much in advance of the sale. We fully guarantee these bulls will pass the breeding soundness evaluation before the breeding season.

Frame Score

The heifer heifers have been palpated and confirmed open. – Dr. Kelli Tobin, DVM

Polled, Scurred or Horned Most of the bulls are polled if they are known by pedigree to be homozygous polled it will be noted in the footnote.

Homozygous polled means the animal has 2 genes for polled and will not sire horned calves unless mated to Brahman or some Longhorn cattle that have a dominant African horn gene which is rare in the northern tier of states.

If both parents are polled the footnotes will state double polled, they may be homozygous polled but no DNA test has been done.

If they are polled scurred or single polled (one horned parent) they are heterozygous polled. You can expect 1/2 of their offspring to be polled from horned cows if the cows are polled most of the offspring will be polled. A bull can be smooth polled but still have one horned gene and be heterozygous polled. A few bulls are horned and will be noted as such.

Color

In the footnotes some of the bulls either by pedigree or DNA test are known homozygous black. Homozygous black cattle do not have any red genes and will not sire red calves. Since white can be dominant over black they can still have white on them.

If both parents are black the animal might be homozygous black but if not confirmed by DNA test they will be listed as double black. If a bull has been DNA tested red carrier or is from one red parent he will be listed heterozygous black. If used on red cows that are non-diluted about half the offspring will be black, if used on a black cows, most of the offspring will be black out of a heterozygous black bull.

Weights

Birth weights are printed as the actual birth weight. When you get your registration certificate on the Simmental bulls and heifers, the American Simmental Association will print an adjusted birth weight adjusting it for the age of dam.

The weaning and yearling weights and ratios for weaning and yearling were all processed by the American Simmental Association including those sired by Angus.

Frame scores are neither good or bad, they are a measurement for hip height. If you have small framed British bred cows, you may want to use a larger framed bull to increase performance. We offer a selection of the widest bodied, easiest fleshing Simmental you will find anywhere. Just look at the pens. We truly offer some easy fleshing Simmental.

Frame scores are an asset for those buying a bull sight unseen. When you can compare weight with frame size, it gives you a picture of the animal’s body type.

Viewing of Cattle

Cattle may be seen anytime at the ranch.

Bulls will be penned by sire groups as much as possible. This allows you to observe what each sire passes to his progeny.

Trucking

Free delivery to Central stockyard locations in the Dakotas and adjacent states or we will make arrangements and pay half the expenses elsewhere in the continental U.S. on the individually lotted cattle. Contact John for trucking details on the commercial open heifer lots. $50 discount if you haul your own cattle sale day (excludes commercial heifer group lots). Bulls may be boarded at the ranch for $1.50 per day and buyer makes arrangements for pickup later.

Feed Ration

The bulls were fed grower developer diets, consisting of hay (native hay and alfalfa) silage, wet distillers grain, high moisture corn and liquid supplement to provide balanced 12-13% protein diets.

EPD’s are based upon a deviation from the breed average (above or below (-)) for the base year for the particular trait. You cannot compare EPD’s from one breed to another. EPDs may change from the time this catalog was printed until registration papers are transferred.

Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in – blending EPDs & economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry & dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes.

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers & mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained, & the remaining heifers & steers put on feed & sold grade & yield.
