WELCOME
BREAKFAST AT LUNCH
Dear Friends, On behalf of the Board and staff of Roca, thank you for joining us today and welcome to Breakfast at Lunch! This is Roca’s 2021 version of our Annual Breakfast—albeit at lunch, and virtually. After a year without our Annual Breakfast, we are thrilled to be able to virtually bring together our friends in Massachusetts, Baltimore, and across the nation—but we very much hope to see you in person in 2022! Today, we are delighted to have guest speakers Gabrielle Giffords, Former U.S. Congresswoman, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, Dr. Alisha MorelandCapuia, author and Director of Trauma-Informed Treatment at McLean Hospital, and of course, Roca’s extraordinary young people. Over the past year, amidst the multiple challenges of Covid-19, a reckoning for racial justice in our nation, and the increasing, devastating impact of the economy on the most impoverished, Roca staff never stopped. We expanded and reinvented the way services are delivered. We implemented a socially distanced outreach strategy, developed supplemental virtual programming, continued to work with criminal justice and community partners, and advocated for and implemented systemic changes. Funds raised through Breakfast at Lunch are vital to continue the work with our young people at the center of urban violence. We remain deeply grateful for your friendship and support—we could not do this work without you. Thank you for choosing to be relentless with us,
Molly Baldwin Founder & CEO, Roca

VICHEY PHOUNG 1981-2004 Vichey Phoung was born in a Thai Refugee camp while his family was fleeing from the Cambodian Killing Fields, and came to the U.S. as a baby. In early adolescence, he joined a gang with his three older brothers and spent many years in and out of the streets. Over time and after a particularly challenging several months in jail, Vichey came to accept responsibility for causing harm and made remarkable and longlasting changes in his life. He worked and volunteered as a street worker, seeking out his peers and helping young people leave gangs. He led peacemaking circles for gang peace efforts, helped launch the Via Project, and became a well-known young leader in the area. At age 23, Vichey was tragically killed in an industrial accident; he is survived by his mother, brothers, and son, Allen. Despite his young age, Vichey had become a wise person that everyone at Roca loved and admired. To this day, Vichey’s impact on Roca can be felt strongly. He would have been inspired by Roca’s transitional employment programming, and he, more than any of us, would be able to recognize and appreciate those awarded the Vichey Phoung Peace Award.
Roca’s Vichey Phoung Peace Award recognizes two Roca participants who, through their hard work and determination, have achieved substantial positive change in their lives, exemplifying the transformation which Roca seeks to bring about in all of the young people it serves. We believe that all young people, regardless of their challenges, are able to change, grow and lead and that peace is something we learn, practice and promote. With this award, Roca also wishes to express its gratitude to outstanding community leaders for their invaluable support of our work.

VICHEY PHOUNG AWARD RECIPIENTS MIAYON MEDLEY, ROCA BALTIMORE PARTICIPANT Miayon, 20 years old, was born in Baltimore’s Gilmor Homes housing project, attended Matthew A. Henson Elementary School and then National Academy Foundation (NAF) Middle School. During his middle school years, he began to join others involved in street activity, and later became Roca-eligible in October 2018. Within a few months of building a relationship with his Youth Worker, Miayon fell and hit his head while being pursued by police resulting in a traumatic brain injury and a coma. Roca stayed by his side even as he was unconscious and remained consistently present during extensive rehabilitation at Kennedy Krieger Institute. This was a turning point in his bond with Roca and his Youth Worker Jamal. Miayon began to see value in CBT and Workforce Readiness training. After several Roca work crew attempts, he was ready for outside employment. As of November 2020, Miayon is working steadily at Johns Hopkins University in Environmental Services and remains in contact with Roca staff to keep things on track. According to Miayon, “Roca helped me understand my past and make changes for my future. Roca was constantly there, not making the changes for me, but teaching skills to make the right decisions for myself.”
BRIANA CERAOLO, ROCA MASSACHUSETTS YOUNG MOTHERS’ PROGRAM PARTICIPANT Briana Ceraolo, 24 years old, has been a participant in Roca’s Young Mothers’ Program since 2018. She is originally from Florida and moved to the Boston area four years ago as a new mom escaping domestic violence. Her 6 year old daughter, Arianna, has a big personality and a big heart! She is the joy and inspiration of Briana’s life. When Arianna was 4 years old, she was taken into state custody. While working hand in hand with Roca to finally become reunited with her daughter, Briana is working on her GED at Roca, and has completed Roca’s Transitional Employment Program. In addition to spending a lot of time doing arts and crafts and outdoor activities with Arianna, she is working with Roca to build her skills as a parent leader and hopes to find a job she loves that involves helping others so she and Arianna can move out of a shelter and into a place of their own in the near future.
