Challenges Microsoft SharePoint 2010 supports the use of SQL Server Enterprise Edition with Encryption Key Management and Transparent Data Encryption for encrypting database content. However, many of Townsend’s clients use Remote Blob Storage (RBS) because of its better performance and ability to overcome size limitations by not storing blobs directly to the SQL Server. Documents stored in RBS are not encrypted by the SQL Server and RBS does not provide any encryption and decryption functions by default. Therefore, Townsend needed a custom solution that would provide encryption and decryption functions with RBS for SharePoint 2010 for those clients.
Solutions Townsend Security sought the assistance of AllianceTek, a software solutions company with experience building custom SharePoint solutions for various businesses. AllianceTek used its R&D and Microsoft Certified Professionals team for SharePoint development to create an innovative solution for Townsend. The solution includes a custom SharePoint RBS application that incorporates Townsend’s existing encryption key retrieval library to retrieve an encryption key and encrypt documents stored in RBS and decrypt retrieved documents.
implementation RBS encryption was achieved by extending the RBS class to create a new custom RBS provider that encrypts and decrypts documents. This allows Townsend’s clients to benefit from the larger size limitations of RBS while having the enhanced security and functionalities that exist with SharePoint.
