SHOP DINE GUIDE

It’s been an exciting year for Lower Manhattan. While the neighborhood and city continue to rebound from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, downtown’s adaptability and trademark resilience in the face of unprecedented challenge have helped it get back on its feet, even in uncertain times. Our streets, bars, restaurants, shops and businesses are increasingly filled with workers, residents and tourists seeking out all Lower Manhattan has to offer. New culinary and cultural touchstones have helped restore some of downtown’s signature dynamism. The kinetic one square mile that makes up this community continues to impress us with its invigorating spirit.
Of course, a neighborhood is more than just its marquee destinations. A neighborhood is its grocers, lunch spots, wine shops and corner dry cleaners. A neighborhood is its fire station, local police precinct, post office and library. A neighborhood needs businesses big and small to help make it a home. It’s more important than ever to support Lower Manhattan’s 1,000-plus local businesses, favorites and newcomers alike. In 2022, we gained quite a few noteworthy newcomers.
It was a big year for downtown’s dining scene. In June, food hall Urbanspace opened an outpost at 100 Pearl Street, bringing their signature array of elevated food stalls to Lower Manhattan. Now, Lower Manhattanites have access to a diverse array of vendors that cater to every craving, with options including Plant Junkie, Coney Shack, Gabriela’s Cocina de Mexico, Grind, Pita Yeero, Que Chevere and Twenty One Grains. There’s even a craft beer spot for brew enthusiasts named Top Shop. This bar and bottle shop plugs itself as a true destination for all things hoppy.
At the Seaport, Jean-Georges Vongerichten finally debuted his much-anticipated sprawling culinary destination, the 53,000-square-foot remodeled Tin Building. Once home to the famed Fulton Street Fish Market, the fully renovated space at 96 South Street now comprises six full-service eateries, including T. Brasserie, Fulton Fish Co. and speakeasy the House of the Red Pearl. Visitors can also find six quick-service counters, four bars and a bevy of retail and private dining options.
Other downtown dining additions of note include Peruvian eatery Artesano at 90 Chambers Street, funky restaurant Warren Peace at 77 Warren Street, sleek coffee-and-cocktail spot Rx Room at 2 Coenties Slip, and hopping pan-Asian spot Hey Thai at 200 Water Street.
Casa Tulum, a Mexican restaurant, opened at 229 Front Street in December. Daniel Boulud debuted his take on Lyonnaise cuisine, Le Gratin, at 5 Beekman Street in May, to much acclaim. And though it’s not technically new, high-end eatery Manhatta at 28 Liberty reopened as a cocktail destination following a lengthy pandemic closure. This year we also welcomed the return of the neighborhood’s beloved Century 21. The legendary retailer reopened its doors on Cortlandt Street for great deals on designer clothing. Lower Manhattan has also been lucky enough to gain its first Whole Foods, which had its long-awaited opening at newly reimaged One Wall Street earlier this year; a Life Time luxury health club and gym opened at the address in September. Luxury hotel the Wall Street Hotel opened at 88 Wall Street in June, bringing 180 guest rooms and a number of high-end amenities and eateries to the neighborhood. And in addition to a slew of new retail and personal services, Lower Manhattan gained a new cultural landmark: the visionary immersive digital arts center Hall des Lumières, which has been dazzling visitors at 49 Chambers Street since September.
Looking forward, the long-awaited performing arts center at the World Trade Center is nearing completion, with an anticipated opening date later this year. The 90,000square-foot facility will include three theaters, rehearsal and dressing rooms and a restaurant/bar for show patrons guided by famed chef Marcus Samuelsson. It is set to have a profound impact on the cultural life of the neighborhood and the entire city, and we can’t wait to welcome it.
As always, Lower Manhattan is ever-changing, so for the most up-to-date information, go to our website downtownny.com. And if there are shops, restaurants and activities you’d like to see in Lower Manhattan in the future, let us know at downtownny.com/about-us/contact

Lower Manhattan has central public transit and most of the cityʼs main attractions. Plus itʼs a lot less crowded than other parts of the city, making it a prime spot in which to base your stay. And of course, weʼve got great hotels: From family-friendly budget stays to luxurious and indulgent historic hotels, downtown New York has something for every traveler. Thereʼs even full-size apartment living available for those whoʼd like to spend a month or two with us — and, after a few days exploring all that downtown has to offer, who can blame them?

New York City as we know it began in Lower Manhattan, and the neighborhoodʼs rich visible history stretches from the pre-Revolutionary era through contemporary times. Downtown is also home to some of the cityʼs most celebrated museums. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian and the gateway to the Statue of Liberty are just a few of the sites youʼll find. Come for landmarks like the Oculus and the New York Stock Exchange, stay for photo-ready spots like the Charging Bull and Isamu Noguchiʼs Red Cube. Hereʼs what to do and see.

This highly anticipated diner finally opened last year after several years of Covid-related delays, offering 11 pages of menu for you to flip through before deciding which of the dozens of melts, panini and hot sandwiches you’d like to devour. There’s also a requisite selection of never-ending breakfast plates from which to choose (e.g., chocolate-chip pancakes for the table), along with $7 milkshakes you can customize with your preferred flavors and toppings.
Average Lunch: $10-$20 Average Dinner: $15-$25
Special Features:
Lower Manhattanites are often eating on the go — grabbing lunch between meetings, caffeinating up on the way to a sightseeing spot, snacking in one of our many lush green spaces. Luckily, weʼve got a whole bunch of cafes, coffee shops and other casual eateries where you can get your hands on a quick bite. From celebrated brands like Xiʼan Famous Foods and taïm to independent joints like Blue Park Kitchen and Pisillo, downtown has a lot to offer timecrunched eaters. Hereʼs where to go.

Founded in 1995, the Alliance for Downtown New York is the business improvement district for Lower Manhattan, south of Chambers Street. Our mission is to provide service, advocacy, research and information to advance Lower Manhattan as a global model of a 21st-century central business district for businesses, residents and visitors.
We do this by supporting commercial tenancy; promoting and sustaining the tourism, technology and retail sectors; and acting as Lower Manhattanʼs authoritative research and information source. Our operations team strives to make the neighborhood safe, clean and welcoming. We provide free public transportation, offer homeless outreach, maintain public spaces, empty hundreds of garbage and recycling receptacles daily, clear snow off of sidewalks, remove graffiti and repair street furniture. Our public safety officers work with the NYPD to keep crime rates among the lowest in the city. The Alliance is dedicated to making Lower Manhattan a thriving and enjoyable place for all.
