S U PE R INTE N DE NT LE T TE R : A Message from Your Superintendent Throughout the 2022-2023 school year, our Aviator Team has worked hard to renew our focus on our vision statement of preparing our students for life, college, and careers. We’ve done that by focusing on the culture that ACS feels its leaders need to create in order to teach our students the habits and skills they must develop for their educational experience to result in a lifestyle they want and deserve…and one that contributes to making our community a better place to live. In short, we focused on building a culture of trust where all students and employees will thrive and we focused on achieving the results that the Alliance community needs, expects, and deserves. The 2022-2023 annual report demonstrates our successes in these areas - there are many! We’re proud of our Aviators and we hope you are as well.

BOAR D OF E DUCATION Mr. Tyler Kinser Mr. Tyler Kinser has served as a member of the Alliance Board of Education since January of 2022. During his time on the board he has served as vice president and is the current president of the board. Mr. Kinser shows great dedication to and support of the students and staff and can be seen at many events cheering on the Aviators.

Mrs. Suzie Dennis Mrs. Suzie Dennis has served as a member of the Alliance Board of Education since April of 2022. She is currently serving as the vice president of the board. Mrs. Dennis spent much of her career in education as a teacher and guidance counselor at ACS before retiring in 2014. Mrs. Dennis returned to ACS to support Alliance Middle School during the 2014-15 school year and the Alliance Career Center from 2017-2020.

Ms. Beth Canfield-Simbro Ms. Beth Canfield-Simbro joined the Alliance Board of Education in June of 2022. Ms. Canfield-Simbro is an associate professor for the education department at the University of Mount Union. She is a strong supporter of Alliance City Schools and especially of her two daughters currently attending school at Alliance High School and Alliance Middle School.

Ms. Elayne Dunlap Ms. Elayne Dunlap joined the Alliance Board of Education in January of 2016. During her time on the board, she has served as vice president and president. Ms. Dunlap spent most of her career in education with Alliance City Schools. She was recently awarded the 2023 Lifetime Educator award by the Stark County Educational Service Center for her dedication to education in Alliance and Stark County.

Mr. William Koch Mr. William Koch has served as a member of the Alliance Board of Education since January of 2014. During his time on the board, he served as president and vice president. Mr. Koch is a life-long resident of Alliance and a proud graduate of Alliance High School. He served as a teacher and coach for many years in a neighboring district before retiring and joining the Alliance Board of Education.

Over $1.4 million in local scholarships was given to 56 students in the class of 2023. Eight students were awarded the Investment Alliance full-tuition scholarship to the University of Mount Union and one student received a two-year, full-tuition AllianceWorks scholarship to attend Stark State.

ACADEMICS Our vision is for all Aviators to graduate prepared for Life, College & Careers.

From the youngest Aviators in preschool to the soon-to-be graduates, the goal of the staff is to get them from where they are to where they need to be. By the time they leave Alliance High School, they are prepared to live fulfilling lives.

This is a team effort that spans across the district. Every step of the way, all Aviators are supported and their academic needs are met through careful instruction and interventions.

HIGH SCHOOL OFFERINGS Advanced Placement Courses Offered Realizing that students need a variety of learning opportunities, Alliance High School has advanced courses available to students who meet specific prerequisites. Advanced Placement courses are rigorous courses designed to expose students to college-level material and work. Teachers of advanced placement courses are trained through the College Board, the institution responsible for overseeing the entire Advanced Placement program.

this program is to promote rigorous academic pursuits and to provide a wide variety of options to collegeready students. Taking a College Credit Plus course from a public college or university is FREE, which means no cost for tuition, books, or fees.

Technology Use • Alliance City Schools offered each student an electronic device to use throughout the school year.

Students in preschool and grades 9-12 utilized iPads while students in kindergarten-8th grade used touch chromebooks.

• Staff members worked hard to improve their tech knowledge by participating in 1,771 hours of professional development throughout the year.

• Alliance City Schools utilized ParentSquare as the district’s primary form of communication with families for the third year.

• 95 new Smartboard were added to classrooms replacing some of the older boards that had been used by students in preschool-5th grade.

• Alliance City Schools is a Google Workspace district and utilizes all of the Google Apps including, Docs, Sheets, Slides and a Google Classroom.

PBIS Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports is an evidence-based framework that helps to support a student’s behavioral, academic and social-emotional health. All schools in the district implement the PBIS framework in a variety of ways. This includes incentives, behavior matrices, behavior cards and classroom rewards.

Alliance Intermediate School held monthly incentives that encouraged the students to meet their academic and behavioral goals in order to attend. Some of the incentives included picnics at Butler Rodman Park, a trip to Sky Zone, dodgeball tournament, inflatables and watching a movie in the Alliance High School auditorium. An average of 92% of students attended the monthly incentives during the 2022-23 school year.

At Alliance Elementary School and Alliance Early Learning School staff members used Kickboard to track each students’ behavior. The students in kindergarten through 3rd grade have three behavior expectations: Be Kind, Be A Role Model and Give Your Best Effort. When staff members catch

a student modeling one of the three behaviors, they can give them a positive point. If a student exhibits a negative behavior, a staff member can give them a positive reminder.

This does not count against a student, but it lowers their daily positivity rating in kickboard. The students strive to have a positivity rating of 75-90% each day. At Alliance Elementary School the students received an average of 82% positivity rate for the 2023-24 school year and the students at Alliance Early Learning School received an 89% positivity rating. Families have access to kickboard to see how their students are doing behaviorally each day.

District Math Tournament Students at Alliance Middle School and Alliance Intermediate School took part in the 2023 District Math Tournament in March. The tournament offers a variety of math challenges for students to take part in, including algebra, mental computation, geometry and team problem solving. Three Alliance students took 1st place with many more placing between 2nd and 8th place in the competition.

Special Services Special Education Alliance City Schools has a continuum of services available for students with special needs. This continuum ranges from self-contained classrooms to co-taught classrooms. ACS Intervention Specialist teachers work hard to differentiate the academic instruction so that all of our students have the opportunity to learn grade level material. The SPED department also employs related service providers that work with students in need of Occupational Therapy, physical therapy, speech and language services, and psychological assessments. We have partnered with the ESC to also implement services for students that need vision, hearing, behavior and various educational services.

English Learners Upon notification of an English Learner (EL) entering Alliance City Schools, The Home Language Survey is given to assess the student for English Language Proficiency to get a baseline for starting services. EL Success Plans are implemented for students that need support. ACS also employs the resources of the ESC to help support English Learners. Resources that students can receive include: language assistance, staffing support, providing meaningful access to curriculum and extracurricular activities, avoiding segregation, family engagement, interpreter services, inclass supports, additional English Language development instruction, and individual tutoring.

Gifted Alliance examines and processes the results of the required whole grade screen for reading, math, superior cognitive ability and creative thinking to identify students as gifted and talented. ACS teachers are given professional development when they have a gifted student in their class so they can appropriately differentiate the instruction to keep the student growing, engaged and learning. Counselors are provided professional development to help support gifted students with their social and emotional needs.

Career Preparation 2-year CTE Programs offered to Alliance Juniors & Seniors Alliance High School is a member of a career tech planning district (CTPD) allowing students to take part in any of the Career Tech Education (CTE) programs offered at Alliance, Marlington and Salem. During 9th and 10th grade, students have the opportunity to investigate their possible career 8

interests through semester-long introductory career tech classes and tours of all career tech programs in the CTPD during their Sophomore year. Starting in their junior year and continuing through their senior year, students can elect to take part in one of the CTE programs for multiple class periods a day where they gain hands-on, work-based learning experiences, and the opportunity to earn industry recognized credentials.

CTE By The Numbers:

93% of the Class of 2023 CTE Seniors in AHS programs who received an industry recognized credential.

100% of the Class of 2023 CTE Seniors in AHS programs participated in work-based learning experiences outside the classroom.

92.61% of the CTE Students in AHS Programs from the Classes of 2023 & 2024 earned an overall score of proficient or higher on their CTE technical skills assessments.

Career Commitments Signing Celebration A celebration is held annually for the Career Tech students who have accepted full-time positions following graduation.

In the 2022-23 school year, the 12 students recognized are earning an average salary of $47,000 and have full benefits, including paid time off, health insurance and life insurance.

During the celebration, students sign a letter agreeing to work hard and to meet the standards of the company they are joining.

College & Career Night Alliance High School hosted the annual College and Career Night in October. Over 60 employers, colleges, military branches and more attended the night to market to the class of 2023 about the opportunities available to them following graduation. At Alliance City Schools, the goal is for each student to be enrolled in college, enlisted in the military or employed in the workforce following graduation, the College & Career night helps to promote the goal.

YouScience 7th and 9th grade students utilized an online career exploration platform called YouScience. Students play Brain Games to learn about their aptitudes and abilities and Interest Inventories to learn about their passions.

Then YouScience provides individualized results showing how aptitudes and interests can combine to help students discover careers where they will find both success and joy!

These results can also be utilized to help connect students with work-based learning experiences here in the greater Alliance area, enabling a direct connection between ACS students and their future employers. Alliance area businesses have shown an immense amount of support for this program through their partnerships with Alliance City Schools and the Stark Education Partnership.

Career Cafes Alliance High School and Alliance Middle School hosted their first Career Cafes this past spring, featuring Akron-Canton Airport, Aultman Health Foundation, Canton Symphony Orchestra, and Ohio Gratings. Each Career Cafe welcomed professionals from local businesses to share about their company and their personal career paths with a group of students during their lunch periods. Students have the opportunity to ask questions and interact with businesses in the comfort of their own school.

Possible Expansion of AHS CTE In response to the governor’s request to expand CTE throughout Ohio, Alliance City Schools submitted a multimillion dollar grant proposal to open a Culinary Arts CTE program at Alliance. The district is always looking to expand career preparation opportunities through the edition of a twoyear career tech program.

New Facilities ACS unveiled three new turf fields this year: Rockhill Soccer Field, AHS Softball Field and AHS Baseball Field. The facilities were paid for using the ESSER funding provided by the federal government.

Upcoming: New Rockhill Soccer Field House Following an unfortunate fire in November of 2022, the Rockhill Soccer Fieldhouse is no longer suitable for athletes. A new field house is in the process of being built. It’s anticipated to be completed before winter.

Upcoming: AMS Football Field & Track In addition to the soccer, softball and baseball fields, Alliance Middle School will have a new turf football field, which will include a full track. This will allow students at AMS to have a field and track of their own to host athletic events.

The facility is expected to be ready in the fall.

Students in kindergarten to 12th grade are exposed to art and music to promote a well rounded education.

Jazz Orchestra/Jazz Night Alliance High School premiered the very first Jazz Orchestra during the 2022-23 school year. It consists of students who play percussion instruments, wind instruments, string instruments, and more. With Jazz being a focal point of the music department this year, they also hosted the inaugural Jazz night which included performances by Aviators,

four other high schools, Malone University Jazz Band, and the Alliance Symphony Big Band.

Musicals Alliance High School and Alliance Middle School presented musicals throughout the year. AMS students proudly took part in “Annie Jr.” with two actresses taking the lead role of Annie, Kara Eversdyke and Stella Jackson. AHS presented “Chicago: Teen Edition” as their annual spring musical.

Fine Arts Showcase Alliance City Schools hosted the inaugural Fine Arts Showcase that included performances and hundreds of pieces of artwork from all schools in the district. The event allowed Aviator families and community members to see the wonderful art and performance that students have spent all year working on. The Fine Arts Showcase will continue annually as a way to showcase the talented ACS students.

SUMMER CAMPS Camp Invention: 50 students in kindergarten through 6th grade have the opportunity to take part in Camp Invention. They learned about catching air and building mini skate parks. However, the highlight was students showing their unique style when they programmed a robot that mimics sounds.

Maximum Altitude Tech Camp: Students leaving 5th grade and heading into 6th grade had the opportunity to take part in the very first Maximum Altitude Tech Camp. The week-long camp exposed students to story writing, coding and robotics. The students spent the week learning to program Sphero Mini Robots, which could be programmed to change colors, make sounds and travel along a set path. The

week ended with a family celebration where the students read a story about their robot while having it travel along an obstacle course of their own design.

Summer Explorers: The annual Synergy Alliance Summer Explorers program offers students in 2nd grade to 5th grade the opportunity to continue learning throughout the first part of summer. The program runs Monday-Thursday for six weeks of the summer. The students learn about a different topic each week leading up to a field trip on Thursdays. Some of the exciting trips included Noah’s Lost Ark, Beech Creek Butterfly Garden, the Cleveland Aquarium and Raptor Hollow.

The Summer Explorers program helps to keep students learning during the summer time and offers them a fun learning experience at no cost to families.

STUDENT SECTION & PEP RALLIES The students at Alliance Middle School and Alliance High School show their school spirit by participating in pep rallies during the school day and supporting their peers during athletic events in the student section. These events are often accompanied by spirit weeks with varying themes including twin day, anything but a backpack day and Aviator day.

FIELD DAYS Students at the elementary level take part in annual field days. The days feature a variety of activities that encourage them to be up and active, while often enjoying the nice spring weather. The students have a blast taking part in relays, water games, sports and friendly competitions meant to build camaraderie and positively encourage one another.

AES FAMILY GAME NIGHT Alliance Elementary School hosts an annual family game night to encourage families to stay involved in their child’s educational experience. The 2022-23 game night included life-sized games, board games, raffles and more. Board games and bikes were donated by the Alliance Salvation Army to be raffled off to families who attended. The game night was a success with over 400 students, parents and guardians attending.

DANCES Dances are always a popular event for students at Alliance High School. Last year, the students celebrated with a fall homecoming, winter formal, band dinner dance and, of course, a junior senior prom. The students never miss a chance to dress up and dance the night away at the varying themed dances.

Elayne Dunlap received the Lifetime Educator award through the Stark County Education Service Center.

Ms. Dunlap is a retired ACS educator who has dedicated much of her time giving back to the Alliance City School District and the Alliance Community.

She is currently serving her second term as an ACS Board of Education member. In honor of her contributions, a little free library was placed at Alliance Preschool to encourage the littlest Aviators to read starting from a young age.

Bianca Burwell was selected as the Teacher of the Year for Alliance City Schools.

Mrs. Burwell has had a tremendous impact on Alliance Middle School in the time she has been with the district. As the art teacher, she has built strong relationships with her students and colleagues.

She is caring and strives to go above and beyond to help make Alliance Middle School a better place.

Alexis Stallman was selected as the Alliance City Schools Rookie Teacher of the Year.

As a first year intervention specialist, she is always willing to try different strategies with her students to help them be successful.

She constantly provides students with a structured and fun learning environment to keep them engaged.

She sees the positive in all situations and has been a great addition to the Aviator team.

Renee Marinchek was selected as one of five finalists for Stark County Art Teacher of the Year.

Mrs. Marinchek centers her classroom around creativity, social-emotional growth and encouraging her students to be the best possible versions of themselves. Her projects are thoughtful and often prompts self-reflection from her students. The impact she has on her students is positive and long lasting.

AIS Home Visits

Staff Recognizing Students Staff members are always finding new and creative ways to celebrate their students. At the elementary level, students receive yard signs delivered by their teachers when they are recognized for being positive role models in their buildings.

The staff at Alliance Intermediate School created a home visiting program. 19 staff members volunteered to take part in the program dedicated to making real and positive connections with the families of 4th and 5th graders.

Each staff member had a couple families they would contact throughout the year. This included phone calls, emails and home visits. The conversations would center around what the parents hopes were for their child and how they can help them along the way.

The goal of the program is to build a lasting relationship between families and staff.
