01 CONVENTION CENTER A center for cultural hub

A convention center is a part of city’s landscape and can affect the character of location in many ways.

This semester’s project brief was to design a convention center in Gachibowli, Hyderabad, which is a major hub for commercial structures. The site’s immediate surroundings are largely devoid of built structures, but abundant with a lush foliage of trees.

India is famous for its rich culture and heritage. The intention of the project is to design a structure which is contemporary in its form but simultaneously exemplifies Indian culture in its spaces.

The design was conceptualized with the intention to integrate the nature and the built environment as well as a means of guarding against Hyderabad’s arid climate.

02 Sqr foot House – H O U S I N G F O R O N E N I R V R I T T I - Growth uninhibited/Growth in living

BRIEF The growing issue of homeless people around the world is one that needs to be tackled on a war footing. As our cities grow, each of them is occupied by a large number of migrants who make the city their home. The focus was on 4 major problems faced by homeless migrants i.e., affordability, portability, sustainability, and economic opportunity.

DESIGN PROGRAM • A small house for a family of 4 members not exceeding an area of 250 Sqr Ft and maximum height of 12 feet.

• Basic amenities like sleeping area for 4 members, Kitchen and toilet to be provided.

• To design a small housing colony for 50 families, combining one module with other similar modules.

PROPOSAL The design approach was to produce a modular unit which can be built in various permutations and combinations based on the site shape, area and context. The individual unit was customized based on the climate of a region. We also incorporated interesting circulation spaces in the design.

The design is climate responsive and the stacking can happen in various ways depending on the type of climate and the overall land available with necessary alterations to the materials and stacking layout, while still managing to retain the core concept.

Corridors are a part of the setup for enabling circulation. In the design, it was extensively used to create an interactive common space.

The bridges are connected to a landing, which is connected to stairs on either side, linking the units.

The units can be assembled or dismantled easily due to its flexible, easy and simple design, while at the same time maintaining the integral parts that hold the structure together.

Accommodating additional activities in a household. The plan was initially envisioned as a basic rectangle. The addition of a triangular section to the plan makes the design more responsive to the varied climates, adding an aesthetic appeal to the form.

Wall surface is an ideal storage option. The limited space was tackled by providing overhead cabinets that cave over the headboard of the bed.

The kitchenette is strategically placed near the window to enable ventilation for the kitchen while cooking, and facilitates cross ventilation for that unit.

The walls facing outwards has two exposed surfaces, either of which can be used as a window according to the climate.

The utility space is a multipurpose area that can be used for washing clothes and utensils, and alternatively, can also function as a private space for changing clothes.

Accommodating additional activities in a household like outdoor sit-out space, a place to dry laundry, etc. requires a certain amount of spill-over space. This is achieved by slightly extending the unit staircase landing.

The plumbing and electrical services are channeled between two units within a duct in order to facilitate the dismantling process when necessary.

Redesigning incidental spaces

The word betwixt gives us a sense of uncertainty, and the design intends to capture the emotion in all its unkempt nature. This design explores ways in which one can consciously experience all the inbetween spaces that exist when one travels from one spot to another.

The project was aimed at reconceptualizing spaces that are often ignored, such as staircases, corridors, bridges, or footpaths.

The design itself is a blend of experience and comfort. The natural slope of the hill was considered, along with contours and rearrangement of volumes. The elements picked were functional yet aesthetic.

FRAMING OF CONTOURS The slope of the hill in the existing site is for the lack of better terms hidden and unnoticed.

The varied depth depths of the level add an additional dimension of interest.

REPOSITIONING OF THE EXISTING STATUES The levelled surface adds more organization and the oblique line of movement directs the vision, adding emphasis to the ancient sculptures.

HOLLOW AMPHITHEATRE The amphitheater in the center of the steps surrounded by the screen acts a recreational area and a space to pass the time while waiting for the next show.

WATER SCREEN (From the inside) The flowing water screen acts as the dividing surface between the staircase and the amphitheater, but also doubles as a plane for video projections.

INTERACTION The steps don’t just act as a means to bridge two spaces but also now let many other activities happen in between incidentally or coincidentally.

WATER SCREEN The proposed water screen and the rocky terrain imitate the experience of the waterfalls. The height of it also allows the visitors to touch the water. Additionally, it acts as an impalpable railing for the people taking the steps.

04 MALAKPET NEIGHBORHOOD DEVELOPMENT Collective dwelling

Malakpet neighborhood. 60 years old. Dilapidated ruins. Government proposal for new neighborhood. Academic project. Mixed use development, self sufficient neighborhood including school and convention hall, with commercial spaces on ground floor. Central park with badminton court - interactive spaces.

Brief was to develop a master plan with zonal division of commercial, residential and mixed spaces. Take a sub block and build a residential block.

This project was the result of an academic brief based on a Government proposal for building a new neighborhood in Malakpet.

We were tasked with developing a master plan with zonal division of commercial, residential, and mixed spaces. The core idea was to build a self-sufficient neighborhood. In the next stage of the project, a specific plot was developed into a mixed use residential block.

Two units share a common wall. And four units together are clubbed with a common duct between each two units. All the service pipelines go through that come from the units. Thus making to more economical.

The block towards the north west has three voids, with one on each floor. These act as both interactive spaces as well allow air flow through the block into the courtyard.

The structure terraces down as it rises high. These terraces look down to the park and establish a good interaction between the users and the surroundings.

05 CHARMINAR PRECINCT’S DEVELOPMENT PROJECT Built in 1591AD, Charminar is marked as a landmark of the city. It experiences a wide range of activities which are commercial, religious, cultural and also social. The reason for degeneration in the area is the misuse of available space and infrastructure. These aspects discourage many user groups from accessing the area, affecting its economic and cultural vitality and limiting its potential.

The CPP (Charminar Pedestrianization Project) was instituted by the govt. in 2006. CPP aims to achieve through the proposed concept plan a quality urban environment which is accessible, safe, secure and aesthetic. The major works include pedestrianization of Charminar surroundings, conservation of historic buildings in the precinct.

The project proposed is the extension of CPP. OBJECTIVES OF PROPOSED DESIGN • To restrict vehicular access into the precinct.

• To design elements that are inspired from existing architecture adding aesthetic value.

• To have clean terraces, which can be used for storage etc.

• To restore the existing buildings by improving the facade design keeping the same architectural value.

The three streets of Charminar precinct each showing evolution of the area in terms of infrastructure and functions. The illustration shows how there was a major shift in the way the Charminar precinct has evolved today.

The design majorly is inspired from the existing rich Nizam architecture of Hyderabad and major design cues from within the site. These are some of the existing architectural details that were replicated while designing the elements.

The streets are completely pedestrianized by restricting vehicular access into the precinct after a certain point with mechanized bollards which go down into the ground when any emergency vehicles need to access. Elements like street lights, signage boards, vending carts, food containers etc., have been proposed.

The illustration shows the proposed elements in the Charminar precinct in blow ups (boxes). Each element is designed in a way that it reflects the architectural heritage of the old Charminar and subtly makes aware of the then existing culture in some way.

06 UNE NOUVELLE AUBIERS

Landsc Tram line

Our site is situated to the south of the Les Aubiers township. It was previously a greenfield site but over the years, has been contaminated by illicit activities by miscreants. The site is close to two Tram stations and also has a pedagogical farm in its surroundings. The Les Aubiers neighborhood is quite isolated and there is a stigma surrounding it.

This has affected the commercial activity in that area.

The goal of the design is developing the adjacent site in a way that is beneficial to both les Aubiers and the site. Trees have been transplanted from the northern border of the railway yard to the South for a separation between the industrial buildings to the South and the residential blocks to the North. This also will ensure there isn’t a physical ‘border’ between the existing buildings and the new buildings.

Master plan

MASTER PLAN A new tram line is being proposed that will go along the southern edge of the site. The goal is to bring in an inflow of visitors to the site to boost commercial activity. There are two major axes for movement. One is the Tramline and the other is the road purely for pedestrian access. This road and the tramline are flanked on either side by residential units with commercial spaces on the ground floor.

PROPOSED SITE

Les Aubiers is an old neighborhood that comprises of interlocking rectangular blocks. The ground floor of the neighborhood are for used commercial purposes whereas the rest is residential.

The proposed site needs to accommodate the new neighborhood for Les Aubiers including other amenities. This site has an old railway line which can be used to develop a tram line through the site.

The site is planned while keeping Urban future needs in mind and aims to improve the social and economic quality of life in the neighborhood.

CONNECTIVITY

The site has a tram network towards the southern edge. It has a pedestrian road runs across the site towards Les Aubiers. These Networks will connect the site and Les Aubiers.

BUILT MASS

All buildings are designed along one axis and have sloped terrace gardens. These will be mixed-use, with commercial spaces on the ground floor and residential spaces on the remaining floors.

AXIS

These axes will be the major connectivity networks between the site and its surroundings.

OPEN SPACES

Preservation of open spaces has been given a priority in the master plan. An effort has been taken in the division of spaces to allow maximum green space to exist.

Memorial The whole neighborhood was found to be the Base sous-marine, previously known as Betasom which was built by the prisoners of war that eventually led to several deaths and loss during the world war 2 bombing.

The design of the memorial is aimed at expressing this loss and misfortune through architecture and built environment. The intent behind designing a simple walled structure instead of an enclosed one was to create a space that brought more exposure to it instead of constricting it in an enclosed room, enabling everyone that visits the place to experience the bravery of the fallen and the sufferers. For the same reason, an underpass is designed to the front of the memorial as a gesture of invitation to encourage people into the space.

Block Design The linear row of buildings designed vary gradually from the ground floor level to the highest order of G+7 with a steady increase in the heights from both the sides to the center almost in a wave like pattern with subtle ups and downs as shown.

The terraces of these buildings are used for farming and agriculture taking inspiration from the nearby pedagogical farm as a way of integrating in the proposal the integrity of the old neighborhood.

The idea behind this proposed design is that of a mixed use development with all of the amenities resting in the ground floor and, the terrace gardening with the agriculture and horticulture serving the commercial purposes of the neighborhood with the rest being residential use.

Rehabilitation Center Because of drug problem in Bordeaux, especially in poor neighborhoods, illicit activities like burning of stolen goods, drug dealing are on the rise. The government has taken an initiative to open 'Harm Reduction centers' to tackle this problem.

The structure consists of column-supported glass walls that are all encased within a shell-like structure. Shells represent a safe place, a space to retreat to when the world treats you harshly.

The design very subtly tries to stimulate the healing process with its spaces.

Landscape Maintaining the harmony with the design of the housing blocks, the landscaping is designed in a way that best showcases this relation by making them irregular and with gradual varying heights as shown. But to avoid making the space too random, the principles of Voronoi were used to attain the same effect of irregularity yet giving it a sense of form.
