“There is no perfect spaghetti sauce. There are perfect spaghetti sauces.”

Recently, I was asked the question: “Why would I advertise my facility if there are so many others doing the same thing?”

Being in sales for 20 years I am trained to answer a question like this in ‘n split second. I will use all the do’s of selling and convince you of all the principles of advertising and sales ... But my true heart’s answer?

How big my WOW moment when completely by accident I came across a talk by Malcolm Gladwell called “Choice, happiness and spaghetti sauce”, Posted Sep 2006, where he spoke about the famous Howard Moskowitz (a 20th century psychophysisist who was responsible single handedly for changing the way the food industry thinks about flavours and combinations).

I received my answer there and then: “By embracing the diversity of human beings, we will find a surer way to true happiness.”

Without initially realising the fact, my inner voice constantly pushed me into a direction of sharing information about EVERYTHING a child can learn by using all of their 5 senses. Not only by sitting in a classroom, but by feeling, hearing, smelling, tasting and seeing different things, experiencing all their brains may take in.

This is what ALLES is about ... We embrace the diversity of human beings.

As a portal to the five elements involved in the “out of classroom education”, there will never be too many Adventure Camps, Life skill Camps, Leadership Camps, Educational Programmes or Sport Camps in our publication.

Our readers are divers, their needs are unique to their own group of students. The greater our variety of service providers, the more success we will have in feeding our readers’s needs and all parties involved will reap the rewards. Students will have access to their perfect camp and the camp will have their perfect group, every single time.

Planning Your Gap Year

STEP 1: ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS

1. What needs to happen to make college a reality after your Gap Year? Do you need to defer, take a leave-­‐of-­‐ absence, or arrange for a Consortium Agreement? What deadlines and deposits need to be paid to secure your position in college?

2. How long do you have for your Gap Year? A semester? A year?

3. How much structure do you need? Often times it makes the most sense to start with more structure and community before having a more independent experience. If not, will you be able to go it alone and fend safely for yourself? If you need to go to a doctor do you have the wherewithal to ask the right questions and advocate for your own best interests?

4. Where do you want to go? Think languages, communication-­‐needs back home, environmental attributes, etc.

USA? Latin America? Europe? Asia? Africa? South Pacific? Antarctica? The Moon?

5. What do you want to do? Teach? Wildlife? Arts? Environmental work? Study a language or cooking? Learn green building?

6. What's the budget? Do you need to find a placement with room and board? Are there currency conversions that work in your favor? Do you need to work and save money first? Are there airfares and other expenses to factor?

Will you be using part of your college tuition? What scholarships and FAFSA monies are out there to help?

7. Is it important to get college credit? This can open the door for FAFSA and other sources of financial aid.

STEP 2: FIND THE RIGHT PROGRAM Some of the best questions to ask Gap Year organizations are: •

STEP 4: PREPARE YOURSELF 1. For international Gap Years, make sure your passport is valid for 6 months AFTER the last day of travel. Some places literally will refuse you entry at the border without that extra validity.

2. Make arrangements for any visas and vaccinations (Center of Disease Control) cdc.gov 3. Make a detailed packing list and don't buy everything new.

4. Plan for communication. Do you bring a cell phone? Buy a local phone? Will you have access to email where you're located or will you have to go to a library or go to town?

5. Get a travel guidebook. We recommend either Lonely Planet, or Rough Guides, or Let's Go 6. Build or buy a small medical kit.

7. Book airfare. Do this preferably a month in advance and take advantage of student-­‐only fares.

8. Arrange for a Visa Debit card and a backup credit card. If traveling internationally, currently it appears that Visa is simply more accessible than the other major credit companies. Additionally, check with your bank to know the fees for using your card outside of the home area.

9. Again, for international trips, make sure to register your itinerary with the State Department's Smart Travelers Enrollment Program (STEP) step.state.gov/step/ 10. If you're traveling with a passport, it's never a bad idea to email yourself a photocopy of the front photo and signature pages in case you need to get it replaced.

11. Arrange for an airport pickup. Times of transiYon (jet lag, environmental, etc.) are when travelers are most at risk so set yourself up for success.

LEARNING ...

As we approach the end of the school year , both parents and matriculants are faced with the looming challenge of making an important decision - whatever will I (or my child) do next year?

Study further, start work, or take a gap-year?

The idea of a gap-year is an increasingly attractive and popular option for a recently matriculated young adult. For the last 12 years as a scholar, a structured environment with uniforms, set hours, and strict timetables have been the norm. Grade 12 can also be a stressful year, with the students focusing most of their time and energy on passing with an exemption.

A gap-year offers some teenagers an option to explore life beyond the routine, safety and structure of their school years. The opportunity to explore and experience independence and adventure is very appealing.

It’s a big decision to make and it has implications for both the adventurer and the family as a unit. It’s up to the school leaver to make the final decision but just as a leader brainstorms options with a team, so this decision should be discussed as a family as it will have a direct effect on finances, schedules and the like.

A gap-year gives one the opportunity for self-discovery and honing leadership skills. But with this newfound freedom inevitably comes more responsibility.

Many of the parents I’ve spoken to who have supported their teenager’s decision to take a gap-year are also firm in the belief that their kids need to take responsibility for earning their own money and not just lay around and “veg“ in front of the TV or computer.

WORKING ...

The teenagers that I've spoken to about taking a gap-year found the idea exciting and appealing as it offers a variety of options, including: Travel. And why not? Travel cultivates responsibility in looking after oneself away from the comforts of home. Planning, decision-making, budgeting, learning about other cultures and honing communication skills. All traits of a confident leader.

Networking – by stepping into new environments, trying new things away from peer groups and pressure, one forms new friendships and connections.

Working – there’s nothing like the feeling of earning one’s first pay-check or viewing the bank balance increase after some shifts at work. Earning cash definitely gives one freedom!

Courses and workshops – 12 months of time to explore allows school-leavers who are not sure what they'd like to study the chance to attend workshops, courses, talks and seminars to learn what is out there. Discover new interests and passions!

Whatever the final decision, a unified agreement between school leavers and their parents can help shape the year “off” into a time that becomes a great growth opportunity for a young adult- a year of new experiences, real-world education, fun and independence.

This top-class resort offers a wide range of accommodation options with true Bushveld hospitality. At the adventure centre, even larger school, student or church groups can make use of Klein-Kariba’s facilities at a discounted rate.

With various activities, recreational facilities and amenities such as a restaurant, fast-food division and a well-stocked shop, there is no such thing as boredom at ATKV Klein-Kariba. To top it all, we are located along the Bushveld tourist route, which serves as the ideal base for day tours to explore nearby tourist attractions.

The educational programmes at Klein-Kariba is designed to effectively focus on learner development in a fun and safe environment. We have fixed courses which includes a leadership development course, a bonding course, an adventure course, an ecoadventure course, as well as a nature course. We can also conduct activities or programmes that are required by school groups, by designing an educational programme that suites the specific needs of the school or group.

The Klein-Kariba Leadership Centre is the ATKV's top destination for educational courses and can house up to 200 learners in a variety of accommodation units depending on availability. The resort boasts with everything from apartments to large and comfortable houses spread throughout the mountains surrounding the resort. Klein-Kariba also have wooden chalets surrounding the dam on the resort, fully furnished 'tent houses' and the 'Tekkie Camp' which consists of nine furnished tent houses that accommodates 12 people each, for affordable group accommodation.

Klein-Kariba's Adventure programme has become a favourite among school groups, and includes numerous group activities and games like box car racing, abseiling, archery, hiking trails, raft building, paint ball and air rifle shooting, swimming, obstacle courses, night marches, a kayak challenge, map reading and many more.

The Nature programme is all about the identification of animal and insect species, animal track identification, and plant identification. The programme also provides social entertainment in the form of nature-related challenges that learners have to complete.

The Leadership programme helps identify potential leaders through a series of challenges, team games and organised entertainment activities. The programme is designed in such a way that it stimulates leadership qualities in pupils.

The Bonding programme helps pupils get to know and bond with each other by encouraging interactive participation in a range of different activities.

Investment in the youth has always been a top priority for the ATKV, that is why we3 are so active in this regard. Klein-Kariba already has over 40 returning schools every year and this number keeps growing.

The ATKV offers a post-matric gap year programme that offers school leavers the opportunity to acquire new life skills while they decide on a career. We also regularly sponsor youth conferences, leadership development programmes, and educational symposia where you get the opportunity to contribute to the future of our children and the generation after them.

Bayete is an adventure centre in the heart of the Waterberg area in the beautiful bushveld, Limpopo province, approximately 12km outside Modimolle (Nylstroom) and close to BelaBela (Warmbaths) on the old Naboomspruit road.

Bayete consists of about 140 ha, with a natural farm dam and a fountain.

We also have a variety of antelope and wild life that includes, kudu, red hartebeest, blesbuck, impala, springbuck and blue wildebeest. Bayete is a paradise for identifying trees, grasses, field plants and birds.

Bayete specialises in outcomes based education (OBE), camps that includes leadership identification, leadership development, team-building, sport camps, and self-catering groups. These programmes are presented in both Afrikaans and English. With every camp emphasis is put on certain skills, which is taught trough short lectures, and strengthened, tested and practically experienced through outdoor adventure activities.

Our programmes get set up according to the group needs and the outcomes for camp.

We also have the brilliantly talented Drakensberg Boys choir as our neighbour, Falcon Ridge Birds of prey centre and the Dragon’s Rock Reptile park close by. A must see, but at additional costs.

The Wafße hut and KZN Weavers also offer some good treats, along with our friends from Honey and Bee tours at Scrumpy Jack.

Accommodation

We can happily accommodate camps up to 100, plus support staff.

Boys and girls are in two separate wings, separated by the dining hall. In the two wings, sizes of dormitories range to sleep 6 -32 each. Unfortunately we do not provide linen for these rooms and learners should bring their own sleeping bag and pillow, which is efÞcient!

There is a communal bathroom in each wing.

The teachers’ accommodation is right at the end of each wing, and in these rooms linen, to the maximum of 4 persons, are provided.

Our bus driver’s room is set out nicely with linen provided to the maximum of 2 persons.

Catering Our food is healthy and Ăžlling - something to last us during all the fun from the activities: Meals depend on the dietary requirements of our groups, but below, a simple example of a menu: Breakfast Scrambled eggs, sausages, fried tomatoes served with toast, butter and jams.

Cereal will always be served along with a warm breakfast.

Fruit juice / tea / coffee.

Lunch Build a burger along with a fruit.

Fruit juice.

Dinner Beef stew with rice and a green salad.

Ice cream and chocolate sauce.

In order to ensure the safety and well being of each child, certain rules must be adhered to. The use of matches, cigarettes or alcohol will lead to immediate expulsion of the person concerned.

Our mountainous road is better Ăžt for the smaller to medium busses. Luxury coaches with double axles will need to be careful and alert.

Please note the noise limit from 21:00 to 7:30 as we are part of the World heritage site.

Directions to BergVenture Johannesburg to Van Reenen’s Pass on the N3.

Take the first glide off at the Tugela Toll Plaza, which is at the bo@om of Van Reenen’s Pass. Turn right towards Bergville onto the R616. You will cross over the N3 concrete highway. At Bergville turn leJ towards Winterton. **In Winterton, opposite the Engen garage, turn right onto the R600 Central Drakensberg road.

Proceed for +/-­‐ 13 km to the crossroad juncWon. Cross straight over and proceed for approximately 17 km. Travel straight on towards Champagne Castle Hotel. You will pass the Nest Hotel, Champagne Sport Resort and Drakensberg Boys Choir. Travel up the steep S-­‐ bend, …………. and there we are, on the right!

Durban: Travel along the N3 towards Johannesburg, pass Shell Ultra City and take the Bergville/ Colenso glide off (R74). ConWnue towards Winterton for 20km. Opposite the Engen Service StaWon, turn leJ onto the R600 Central Drakensberg Road. Proceed for approximately 13km to the crossroad.

Cross straight over and travel for +/-­‐ 11km.

Gap Year: Working as a Camp Counselor Written by Christina Sukop & Selina Chetty Taking a “gap year” has become a popular term among high school graduates. A “gap year” is an extended study leave before a student begins tertiary education, and is intended to give students more time

to figure out what career/ degree they would like to pursue.

Many school leavers have decided to work as a camp counselor at Sugar Bay during their gap year to reap the benefits that come with the job. Camp counselors have the opportunity to earn an income without sitting in an office all day. This job appeals to many young adults, because of the casual and fun

working environment, as well as the travel opportunities it opens up to work at international summer camps. Besides supervising & mentoring children, the job requires counselors to be playful, social, active and enjoy the beach & outdoors.

Further perks include accommodation, food and the opportunity to meet people from all over the world.

Students who are between 18 and 28 years old, may apply to become a camp counselor at Sugar Bay. All successful applicants will be invited to participate in the staff training program, which extends over two weeks.

Trainees are constantly evaluated, and upon completion of their training, the suitable candidates are selected and will be offered a position as a counselor.

During their staff training, beneficial qualifications are attainable in First Aid, CPR, child psychology, activity instruction, theory and practice of teaching; which are all valuable additions to a CV. In addition to taking a break from the formal schooling environment, camp counselors have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, improve self-discipline and gain valuable work experience.

Adults (18-28 years old) can apply to work as a camp counselor at any time, and will be notified about the next available staff training dates if their application is successful. The counselor application can be downloaded from Sugar Bay's website, on their “Work for Us” web page.

Some learners have already made the decision to take a gap year long before Grade 12. It is for this reason that Sugar Bay also offers a Counselor in Training (C.I.T) program for learners 17 and 18 year old.

This program allows learners to complete their counselor training beforehand, and during a school holiday, so that they are able to start working as a counselor straight after graduating high school.

EDUCATIONAL CAMPS AT BUSHTRAIL

Bushtrail, a farm of 80 hectares, is situated in the Magaliesburgarea, approximately 80 km from Johannesburg and about 100 from Pretoria.

Bushtrail is situated well off the main road and we have a magnificent view of the Magaliesburg mountain, which was declared a world biosphere site in August 2015, and the valleys leading to it.

The house and bungalows are built of natural stone and are under thatch. Borehole water and ESCOM power make Bushtrail a very comfortable 'home-awayfrom-home'.

Bushtrail was originally started as a holiday camp catering for those children whose parents were unable to go away on holiday at the same time. These camps were and still are very popular. In 1981 the Educational side of Bushtrail was developed and it was in

1982 that the full potential of Bushtrail was realized when it was approved as an Environmental Field Centre by by the then School Journey Services.

Educational Camps at Bushtrail Bushtrail is unique in that it has a wide range of geographical features with a very varied fauna and flora, all in a relatively small area.

We, here at Bushtrail, believe that learning by and through experience is the best teaching method. Our approach is a 'classroom without walls'.

Each lesson is conducted on a lecture format and then followed up by the practical work to consolidate the information given during the lesson. In the event of rain the Lapa is put to good use.

Holiday

The camps are based on the American Camp idea. We cater for the seven to fourteen year old age group.

Our main aim is to let your children have a holiday which they will remember for a long time. We have lots of fun, the number of return campers is sure proof of that.

When the campers arrive they are divided into groups of about 10 campers per group. Each group has their own counsellor. A counsellor is an old camper who has shown

Youth Leadership Course Outward Bound was recently allocated some funding from the Knysna Municipality and these monies were used to fund a leadership programme for young people from the Masithandane and Karatara areas.

Most of the participants did not previous know one another and therefore the whole experience was something new. They had to learn to work with people that they had never met, spend time in the outdoors and to look after not only themselves, but each other as well.

The overall experience was one of meeting new people and making new friends, doing things that they never thought they would ever do, and realising that they are all capable of pushing themselves to new limits and achieving so much more in their lives. The aims of the course were to encourage the participants to

explore their strengths and learn more about themselves and their capabilities; to build their selfconfidence and provide an opportunity for them to learn how to work with other members of their communities in leadership roles.

The course took place at the Outward Bound base on the Swartvlei outside of Sedgefield where activities such as hiking, camping, abseiling, canoeing, and various other activities were performed by the students. The reasons for participating in such challenges are to learn life skills such as trust, planning skills, perseverance, decision making, tenacity and endurance amongst many others.

At the end of the course, the participants each write an experience letters talking of what they have learned from the different challenges. Following is

the letter written by one of the students, Valentine Benson which sums up the whole event : “So at first I said to myself that this is nonsense! I can’t do all this stuff, but how wrong was I? I surprised myself, I didn’t think I could do all the activities given to me. I am more aware of my responsibilities to help others and myself in my daily life. I was never a person who cared for the environment and everything in and around it. I now understand and feel I have a responsibility toward the environment. The confidence in myself is much higher than it was before. I am now capable of working with other people more effectively.”

I had slept late and hadn’t had time to find my Father and say good morning.

I had rushed into the morning with only a mindless, “Good morning Father.” Why do I do that?

I said to my Father;

In slow motion, the laptop teetered, seemingly leaning over just to look at the floor. Then it jumped. I was already in full flight. I would have made it, but for Ginger.

The alarm clock screeched. I lay a moment wondering why I was awake while it was still dark.

“Father I don’t really know where to start?”

At the speed of light the corner of the desk crawled towards me. “That darn cat.!!!” Smash, ……Black.

I lay still, aware of a searing pain in my head. Next to me, the pieces of the laptop; my assignment in tatters.

I moaned, “Help me father.”

“Okay. What do you need me to know this morning?”

“I’m here. What have you been doing today?”

“Oh, it’s been hectic. I have to mail my assignment and the cat bumped the laptop off the pile of magazines and I tried to catch it, but I yelled at the cat as I lunged and he ran in front of me and I tripped over him and the laptop is shattered and…”

“I saw,” said my .

I became quiet in my agitation, anger and helplessness. I had been so busy with my assignment that I had not even thought of saying good morning to my Father.

I sat on the edge of the bed. “Well good night Father. Please look out for Helen and the children.”

Attending sports camps is part of a process where the whole character of a childish developed. The foundation of healthy team work is laid. Character development is a focus point of the training sessions and a lot of focus is given to leadership development. Other life skill elements that is part of the Life skill building block is resiliency, optimism, goal setting, emotional stability and determination. All of this is done in a fun and wholesome environment.

By having training camps as preparation before a season ensures a more prepared team. It also assist a team to have better focus and push the team further. During a structured sports camps, more time is spent on the fundamental skills of such a sport. Intensive training assist children in developing their athletic skills.

Children’s confidence are built at sport camps. An united spirit is created when children engage in team sports. It helps them to find common ground and ways of working together. New friendships are formed and a love for the game is established.

About Us: Back 2 Basics Adventure & Education Training Centre was born in August 2002, situated 8km outside the little town of Grabouw on the Lebanon forestry plantation. We are a family run sole owner business, without any corporate funding, that cater for corporate, church, and school camps. What we do: We do various adventure based activities like raft building, zip line, initiative courses, high rope courses, and obstacle courses.

The idea behind the activities is to teach people life skills, communication skills, being a team player and how to be a team leader.

Adventure activities Our main product in essence is to give a fun filled time but also to teach valuable life skills. Some things we just tend to forget because life gets too complicated. We do what our name says; we take things back to basics. We incorporate fun with learning.

The benefit of doing an outdoor based activity, is that people are taken out of there normal situations have a lot more fun when going through the training. If you enjoy what you doing you general will focus more. It is fun based. We facilitate according to the customers needs. Facilities: Main Camp: Sleeps 148 pax. on bunker beds, in our fixed wooden floored Army tents. And 100 - 150 pax in our two men Dome tents with matrasses. Thus a total of +- 250 - 300 pax can be accommodated at the Main Campsite. Depending on Group size, both Main And Bush Campsites can be booked together for bigger groups (300 – 400 pax).

Ample ablutions, with toilets and showers, with gas geysers on each side of the camp for the boys and girls. A big hall area, where we can seat 250 people & also serves as dining area and Assembly area. Also a fully equipped kitchen for full B2B catering option or you self-catering.

Bush Camp: Sleeps 50 – 120 pax in our fixed wooden floored army tents, equipped with bunk beds and electrical lighting & Dome tents with mattresses (if groups are bigger.) Camp can be use together with Main Camp if the group is big ( 300-400 plus pax) Separate ablutions for Male & Females with gas geysers for constant hot water.

Fully equipped kitchen-tent for full B2B -catering or you self-catering.

Benefits of Camp: Skill Development How Parents View The Camp Experience Why Is It Important To Send My Child To Camp?

Youth development experts agree that children need a variety of experiences in their lives to help them grow into healthy adolescents and adults. For children to develop positive behaviors, their experiences must produce: 路 A sense of industry and competency Do they develop skills? Do they learn to work for what is important? Are they successful at what they do? 路 A feeling of connectedness to others and to society Do they feel like they "fit"? Do they see a role they can play in their group, family, or community? Do they have friends? 路 A belief in their ability to make decisions Do they learn to make good choices? Do they see the results of their decisions? 路 A stable identity Are they learning what their skills are? Are they receiving positive feedback about themselves?

To help us understand what camp accomplishes, approximately 1,000 parents completed a survey after their children returned home from camp in the summer of 2000. On a scale of 1-5 (with 1 = strongly disagree and 5 = strongly agree), parents rated the top five outcomes of camp for their child as follows: (on a 5 point scale) 1..My child felt successful at camp (Average score: 4.63) 2.My child made new friends (Average score: 4.60) 3.My child gained new skills (Average score: 4.39) 4.Camp encouraged my child to get along better with others (Average score: 4.35) 5Camp helped my child have a better idea of what she or he is good at (Average Score: 4.20) Camp can provide an excellent experience for your child to learn and develop. Campers Speak: What is Camp All About?

During the summer of 2000, campers in approximately 20 different ACA-accredited camps were asked to respond to a questionnaire to track the impact of the camp experience. The following are the questions and answers they provided: Can you think of things you learned and did at camp last summer that helped you in school this year?

"I was more confident, wanted to know everything, was excited to be in school and good grades in 7th grade." (12-year-old female) "My experience helped me look at challenging situations differently and instead of giving up, finding a way around them." (14-year-old female) "Last summer I learned a lot about how to control my anger." (13-year-old female) "I learned better sportsmanship and listening skills that helped me bring up my grades in behavior." (11-year-old male) "I learned how to be on my own without someone with me all the time." (12-year-old male) "I learned to have more patience and to appreciate the things I have."(10-year-old female) "I feel that I am better at interacting with friends and family. The people skills learned at camp affected me dramatically when I went home." (15-year-old male) "Leadership, organization, water-skiing, make my bed, keep my stuff clean, to keep in touch with my friends, respect, how to handle pressure." (13-year-old female) Do you feel different about yourself when you are at camp?

"I feel different because I feel like I am accomplishing something by being here." (13-yearold female) "At school there are defined groups of people, but at camp, everyone feels wanted." (15year-old female) "Yes, because I'm with people my age and people who respect everyone." (11-year-old male) "At camp I think that I can do more and be proud of myself." (13-year-old female) "At camp I have a personality that is different from home. I'm less cautious to do fun or exciting things. I don't feel as alone as I sometimes do at home." (14-year-old male) "When I'm at camp I feel that I can be more open with others and myself. I tell people things at camp I wouldn't speak of back home. I feel so much more in tune with myself here and I can discuss issues so much more openly." (15-year-old male) "I don't have to be fake to anyone. Everyone here accepts me as I am, and I'm not judged or criticized." (15-year-old female) If explaining camp to friends, what would you say you learn here?

You learn how to cooperate well with others who share and don't share the same opinions as you." (15-year-old female) "I learned to have fun, be a leader, discipline, and most of all - respect." We asked campers what they learned at camp and received interesting answers, which may be used to enhance stories about the camp experience.

"I learned mostly about how to get along with my peers, but also I learned to take on more responsibilities like managing a schedule and helping to take care of younger campers." (14year-old male, Netimus) "One main thing I learned last year was to be more open to others. That especially helped me into my first year of high school. It helped me get to know more people and to not judge them by their physical appearance, but rather the person they really are." (15-year-old female, Lake Hastings YMCA) "My experience helped me look at challenging situations differently and instead of giving up, finding a way around them." (15-year-old female, Lake Hastings YMCA) Staff In a 1998 study of staff perceptions about the value of the camp staff experience, positive outcomes focused on relationships with other staff and campers, appreciation of diversity, teamwork, role modeling/mentoring, technical and administrative skill development, and interpersonal skills. It is important for camp directors to be able to articulate the values of working at camp when their salaries may not compete with other choices for employment.

More Than a Summer Job Each spring, millions of college students are faced with the challenge of finding a great summer job. Many believe the only way to make money is to spend the summer in a routine office job, while others think that a thankless intern position is the only way to get careerrelated experience. However, there is an alternative that provides valuable transferable skills and the opportunity to save, all while in the great outdoors.

A camp job can prepare young adults for many challenges in life, including how to budget time and money, how to deal with all types of people, and how to become a stronger leader.

Business executives often note that experience as a camp counselor translates into excellent management and personnel skills. Regardless of the college major, camp experiences allow students to learn and develop skills that will enhance job marketability.

There is a camp and a position that fits every personality. Camp directors are starting to look now for people from all over the country with a variety of ability levels and backgrounds.

And, unlike so many jobs today, most camp positions for college students do not require prior experience.

There are four major categories of camp jobs available for college students: Counselors interact personally with campers and lead them through activities. At resident camps, counselors live with campers. Day camps may require counselors to travel with the campers on a bus to and from camp.

Activity instructors teach specific activities, such as arts and crafts, archery, swimming, music, drama, horseback riding, radio/TV, computers, rock climbing, nature studies and more.

Lifeguards are responsible for the camp's swimming and boating areas. Job consideration is given to students with proper certifications, such as lifesaving.

Other jobs include food service directors and cooks, buildings and grounds keepers, drivers, trip leaders, and office assistants.
