In order to offer this new experiential knowledge in the adventure type scene, we discussed last month, lets first understand some concepts in order to have a good foundation as to where, why and how to offer these “learning” experiences. Let’s look at 5 theories to help us understand the full concept of learning and education, of the adventure experiential learning process that we will use. Afterwards in later articles we will focus on a few specialities, and end up with a tool that anyone can use to educate, motivate, encourage and restore people of any race, age, creed or culture. These will become the essence and foundational teachings to the “Switching the lights on” therapeutical program design training we will publish in later articles. We have previously explained two vital laws of experiential learning from Arthur Homes that: Experience alone is not “understanding”. Education seeks “understanding”. Therefore experience alone is not education. Experience is primarily effective. Education is not primarily effective, but serves the person as a whole. Therefore experience alone is not enough for education. Before we learn more about setting a curriculum for an experiential learning adventure camp whether it’s therapeutical or educational you need to understand the following principles:

1. Cliff Hanger and Coat Hanger We already learned the theory of the Cliff hanger/Coat hanger in previous issues. Keep that in mind while studying the following principles as this is principle one.

2. Let the experience work with you

There are three different emotional “stages” out of which we can function during an adventurous experience activity that is important to us now: Comfort zone Stretch-or “out of comfort” zone Trauma/Fear zone

To line up the diagram with previous articles; Mr Cliff Hanger will, during some climbing activities, function out of his “comfort zone”, but when he has to cook, will become the Mr Coat Hanger in the “Stretch out Zone”. If a participants is in the comfort zone during an experience, they will not necessarily experience much emotions, good or bad, and no lasting effect of learning may be achieved with the majority of participants, with such an experience-(unless the facilitator is skilled in reflection techniques). The activity tends to pile boredom upon boredom and the participant might have a “good time” if we do our best. We have to add some form of risk as previously explained. (Remember the section on "Perceived Risk”?) It is however possible that this perceived risk or the activity itself or things happening in “free time” is to some so overwhelming, that we are pushing them into the “Trauma/Fear zone”. In the Trauma zone, the emotions stress level and anxiety level may be in most cases, too much for the participant to handle and he/she is not in a healthy mental state to learn, but will rather quit through some “psychosomatic bail out” or take home a frightful, negative experience and in many cases, even trauma. Now we broke Mr Hanger. When talking to youth workers and guide them to ask the general youth they came in contact with, we were amazed about how many children actually got emotional, mental, and/or spiritual scars from camp activities that was not facilitated or sequenced in a professional manner and terrified children to the point that they perceive adventure camps very negatively. Scratch a bit and you’ll find sensitive stories of all kinds. What camp owners don’t realise, is that they are not just harming the children but also the industry with such poorly designed programs and/or inferior personnel facilitating and/or leading programs. It even has the effect to completely put young people off from the outdoors for the rest of their lives and the way they’ll raise their children and that is a shame for our industry. Regarding the Trauma/Fear zone: More harm than good will be accomplished during this stage, and the experience will work against that which we want to accomplish. This is one of the reasons that our group of “friends” in the industry have committed to never do “ghost” or “spook” activities/stories on camps. They brake too many “Hangers” We must guard and take care not to allow a participant to be in this fearful state of mind through any activity or act of one person towards another. That is also the reason why we always “scan” and evaluate every person before, during and after every activity, even free time: for body, emotional, mental and spiritual safety. Safety of the child on all levels is of utmost importance. I’d like to draw the attention of leaders of spiritual/church camps in this regard too: Some spiritual/Christian experiences is as frightful to some children, as an abseil down Table Mountain and the same effect explained above, can happen to children if we don’t carefully guard and protect them from these experiences. Make no mistake, I am not a traditionalist, regard myself as extreme prophetic, but we have to carefully choose our “target market” with some spiritual/Christian camps/objectives, that should rather be presented to “prepared” or “matured” clients, which have already been engaged in a church/social program and understand what is happening and can follow up on these matters. I always train Gap Year students to ask themselves this question: What’s the use of having a good Christian camp if I

left “corpses” behind? Too many camps brake too many “hangers” We have to be accountable for all we do. To come back to the point: It is thus the “Stretch zone” or this “Out of comfort zone” that we are pursuing after. In this zone a participant is experiencing some level of discomfort and his whole being is aware and set-up for “change”. He/she is in a “learning mode” during this stage, and in itself it’s a very open minded state of learning, because of what we can only explain as a “vulnerability to conditioning state”. When positively used, it assists an instructor or facilitator to “burn files” of experienced knowledge and that is what we try to accomplish in adventure education/experiential learning. Adding a skilled facilitator to the process is like adding fuel to fire or nitrox’s to an already fast car. When in the hands of an unskilled instructor or facilitator, it can have devastating effects on a person’s psyche, and leave them scarred, sometimes for life. I recall a scene of a church camp I was invited to, where a facilitator allowed a group to drop a girl (already battling trusting people) during a trust fall, where she was supposed to fall back and “trust” the group to catch her. One of the first and foremost principles to learn for educational/therapeutical experiential programs is that if we want the activities to work for us, this “zone” or “frame of mind” of being “out of comfort”, must become one ingredient of the unseen essence of the activity; otherwise we will just offer a nice or as stated, a traumatic experiences, which classifies us as either a tourist facility or Fear Factor experiment. Keep away from these two opposites, design the program of activities in such a sequence and manner that we will serve both Cliff Hanger and Coat Hanger in the “out of comfort” zones for as many of the activities as possible and for as long as possible during the program. Little alterations in one activity can serve both groups as explained in a previous article where we explained the heightening of perceived risk without compromising safety. This is the number one reason why not all outdoor centres can claim experiential learning programs, as most of the programs is predetermined as a sausage machine running at high speed so we can get the one group “through” so we can prepare for the next group. When we are activity or program driven, we will either loose Cliff or Coat. A well designed program is a program with plan A, B and C, and in the following chapters and articles we will explain the “Why’s? and How comes?” of such a program. To sum this section up: Coat Hanger is ok, Cliff Hanger is the best, but no Broken Hangers ok? (Coat hanger Experiences is ok, but cliff hanger experiences is the best. We should however stay away from the Fear/trauma zone otherwise we will sit with broken hangers.) Deeper still:

3. Bloom-The stages of learning

Looking at a renowned philosophy of the levels of educational learning objectives, we found that the philosophy of “Blooms taxonomy of educational objectives” is internationally acknowledged and widely used in a multitude of psychological and educational material.

Bloom claims that there exist six stages of learning and can be seen in the following diagram:

1. Knowledge (memory level) Remembering information by recognition or recall. EG. To be able to count. 2. Comprehension (understanding level) Interpreting or explaining knowledge (learning’s) in a descriptive or literal way. EG. To be able to recognise there are 4 not 5 sheep in the pen. 3. Application (simple usage levels) Correct use of knowledge , EG. To solve problems or to answer questions. 4. Analysis (relationship level) Breaking knowledge down into components and detect the relationship between them EG. Identifying causes and motives. 5. Synthesis (creative level) Putting parts together to form a whole “new” EG. To formulate a solution. 6. Evaluation (opinion level) Making judgment about the value of ideas, solutions or events and most important - feelings. Let’s look at a situation to explain this theory. 1) In the first level we learn facts and remember them: Example-

A long pole can be used to increase force through leverage.

2) In the second step we’ll be able to understand and explain to someone else what leverage means and how and where it is used: Example- rolling a stone away with a pole.

3) The third level of learning you will be able to apply the knowledge

Example- when a stone is in your way, having the savvy to get a pole and a smaller stone and lever it out of the way, means you’ve reached this level. This is also the level where our primary and secondary schools normally ends, to be able to be tested on our ability to regain and understand facts that have been taught through the year. In some subjects, schools might even reach the next level of learning.

4) Here we learn to break the knowledge down into smaller parts

Example- The different forces involved when a stone is levered or how the force is transferred from a hand motion and end up in moving the rock (if you don’t know how this happens, don’t fuss, only make sure you understand this level of education/ principle.

5) The fifth level (almost totally absent in our schooling systems) Taking the knowledge and parts that we have learned in the fourth level and putting them together with other knowledge or understandings, and then putting together a whole new idea.

Example- With our leverage knowledge and understandings of it, combined with knowledge of friction and knife edging and gears, we can now make a whole new product like a kitchen tin opener (yes a tin opener is an incredible leverage, gear knife edging thingy.)

6) The last level of learning or education is that of opinion, evaluation or judgment. This entitles you now, to be able to reason why you’re can opener works better than another, or what mistakes there is in your design, what will make it a better opener if redesigned or modified. I would also like to include in this level the importance of the individual.

Example- my opinion- that is how I feel about it, my judgment. What I think about it. Etc. It is also this level that we access and reflect our feelings and thoughts.

This theory becomes very important in understanding the importance and focus of experiential learning. We can see here, that education is: A process- (very, very important statement!) Although schools, institutions and other teaching methods fail to serve the complete educational process-as a whole, it still plays a vital role as part of the process. An alternative educational method is needed, especially to serve the last levels of learning. Thus part of our focus or underlining objective should be that the activity/program achieve either Analysis, Synthesis, Evaluation, or all three levels to serve the participant on a level where normal systems does not serve him. This in itself will be an adventure (remember our training of state of mind?). Having an adventure through learning in adventure via adventure activities sounds like something most participants will participate in if we adhere to our Hanger theory? Deeper deep:

4. Motivation for learning.

The next subject we have to look at is what motivates a learner. Jerome Bruner gave us four principles to abide to that will motivate almost any person on any level, doesn’t matter the psychological, emotional, or academic state. These are:

Curiosity; Being excited by, and attracted to anything that is unclear, unsolved, unfinished or uncertain. Competence; The sense of accomplishment after beginning and then completing a meaningful task. Identification; To model your own life around the values and aspirations of respected others. Reciprocity; To have common ground, share with others and work towards a common goal or objective.

The information should now trigger basic common sense and creativity: All activities should have these hidden objectives as a bedrock in its presentation. Your creativity should not just be focusing on the activities, what about: Getting off the bus? Briefings? Wake up alarms? Quite/reflection times? Mealtimes? Desert time? Snack time? Rotation times? Free time? Tuckshop articles and “money exchange” times? Debriefings? Getting on the bus? Saying Good bye?

There is no reason that the whole camp cannot line the participant up for a mind-set of learning, there is no excuse. We should however think each plan through thoroughly; Let me give an example out of my own fail here: Years ago when we looked at how this work, we were impressed with ourselves and plan the first camp to include all four motivations for learning. This included not to have a normal arrival at basecamp, so we organised with the Headmaster and staff involved with the camp that we are going to “Hi-Jack” the bus. Although this was an excellent idea, the way we did it was way too real! Long story short, one of the girls in this little group of 12 kids was Hi-Jacked the previous month and we just added to the trauma! (To embarrass to share more detail as a lack of common sense in my opinion is a serious unpardonable sin the Bible forgot to teach us about). So the next Hi-Jacking ended up to be done with luminous clothing, crazy hair styles, lots of laughing and teasing and green or orange plastic guns. Nothing, nothing must look real? :-)

5. Effective learning theory

Edgar Dale- The cone of effective learning. The last theory we are going to look at, is that of Edgar Dale, protector of education- Ohio state university USA. Dale’s cone of effective learning explains, according to his PhD studies, the effectiveness of the five most used teaching methods that is used in society.

According to Dale, purposeful experiences makes a big difference in the teaching method used on students- lots more can be recalled, remembered or implemented when discussion, visual learning and experiences are combined in the learning activity and if its designed as a purposeful activity. IOW the activity should in some manner “make sense” to the participant. It should be made applicable to life in some form or manner, or at the least represent such. This is where a trained facilitator is worth his/her salt! They make or break this principles worth! Now again, we can see that education in its full form is a process and not an act or experience. We can use conventional methods of teaching to state, teach or train an objective or fact, but when we jump to alternate methods and teaching styles and activities, we complete the process of learning much faster and much more effectively. This “complete the process of learning” we will refer to in later articles as “the transfer of learning” and explain it step by step through the program design and program delivery procedures. Adhering to these simple 5 principles of learning and education should form solid bedrock mortar, if combined with the previous articles principles. Your planning and delivery should have this solid bedrock. Before you think activities, use these principles as a filter system and make a checklist to be used when designing your experiential adventure outing. Soon, after adding all the principles in these articles, you’ll get the picture and your program design for excellence will become a breeze. Your adventure experiential learning outing will become a gold nugget in the participant’s lives, for ever to be treasured and shared around camp fires happily ever after. “I regard it as the foremost task of education, to ensure the survival of these qualities, an enterprising curiosity, an un defeatable spirit, tenacity in pursuit, readiness of sensible selfdenial, and above all...compassion.” Kurt Hahn quoted in “Island of healing.”

Learning has never been this much fun! Klein-Kariba's Adventure programme has become a favourite among school groups, and includes numerous group activities and games like box car racing, abseiling, archery, hiking trails, raft building, paint ball and air rifle shooting, swimming, obstacle courses, night marches, a kayak challenge, map reading and many more.

The Nature programme is all about the identification of animal and insect species, animal track identification, and plant identification. The programme also provides social entertainment in the form of nature-related challenges that learners have to complete.

The Leadership programme helps identify potential leaders through a series of challenges, team games and organised entertainment activities. The programme is designed in such a way that it stimulates leadership qualities in pupils.

The Bonding programme helps pupils get to know and bond with each other by encouraging interactive participation in a range of different activities.

SOA LEADERSHIP YEAR The Spirit of Adventure Leadership year differs from most others in that it is a working year. It consists of three main parts, namely working as an instructor, participating in adventurous excursions and committing to a study program for the year. Instructing We need young people just out of school to work as instructors with the school groups who attend the camp. The instructors are responsible for leading groups of about 10-12 people through adventurous activities and facilitating their learning and development throughout. We train the instructors in all aspects of the work so that they are competent and confident to maintain the extremely high standard of safety and quality we expect. They are then responsible for carrying out their duties and if done correctly, they have real daily opportunities to make a lasting difference in each individual’s life. Probably the best reason for taking our specific gap year would be the personal and skills development which occurs through the work and contact with persons of a variety of ages. This development will be invaluable throughout a person’s life. Instructors sign an employment contract, as required by law and are paid per day for working with groups. Accommodation and food is provided when working and studying.

Excursions We facilitate a number of adventure trips each year and we encourage each instructor to attend as many as their finances will allow. Currently these include paragliding, advanced rock climbing, scuba diving, Big 5 hiking and camping trips. These are perhaps a luxury but we have selected experiences and refined them over the years so that they will be meaningful and not just a “temporary high”. Most people will never get another chance to do a lot of what we offer and we are also able to offer slightly better prices because of group size and regular bookings etc.

Study We expect each instructor to engage in some sort of study program each year. It is there for a number of very good reasons such as making better/more informed decisions about a full study path, gaining more insight into career choices, ruling out potential career choices etc etc. There is a vast selection of distance learning institutions, courses and subjects out there to choose from. Sometimes just the quiet and distance from the home and city allows minds to think a little more clearly and see a bigger picture. The development of each of the instructors is of as much importance as the development of the school learners and we do our best to help and encourage each instructor to grow and make sound decisions from the year.

African Snakebite Institute Snake Awareness and First Aid Course feedback Alan Champkins I’ve been an outdoor person all my life and have been working specifically in the outdoor industry for the last twenty three years. I’ve been working full time in the camping industry for the last 14 years. I’ve lived in both Kwa Zulu Natal and the Western Cape and have had numerous encounters with snakes over the years. * I’ve taken down my tent while hiking high in the Drakensberg only to find a Berg Adder had slept under it during the night. * I once had to rescue a screaming tourist from a rustic shower in Zululand after a Forest Cobra decided to join come under the reed door. * A camp leader in KZN told me nervously he just saw me step over a puff adder in the path whilst leading a group of campers on a walk * We relocated to a camp outside of Stellenbosch to find a 2 meter Cape Cobra in the courtyard after only being in the house for an hour. * A camper once walked over 100 meters with a puff adder on the end of a stick to go and show his friends the snake he had found.

Then in March my son proudly showed me a scorpion he had found at school. I knew it was poisonous but thought I would investigate further so I posted the photograph on a few friends Facebook pages. One of them recommended I contact the African Snakebite Institute. I was mortified to find out he had caught a Granulated Thick Tailed Scorpion - one of the most poisonous scorpions in South Africa, a sting of which requires urgent medical attention and can be lethal! So when the African Snakebite Institute advertised a Snake, Scorpion and Spider Awareness and First Aid course and a Poisonous Snake Handling Course near me I realized it was more than just a good idea to go. Especially in a day and age where, if we are not on top of our game, working with other people, we are already looking for disaster. Nineteen of us gathered on a cold, wet Cape winters day recently to learn from one of the foremost snake experts in South Africa, if not Africa, Johann Marais. The day was professional from start to finish but it was far from an aloof expert doing the talks. He talked at the level of the people attending. He welcomed interruptions and gave his time to making sure people understood what was being taught. And he covered a lot of details on scorpions, spiders and snakes. He also spent time going through the myths that we often here from others.

Cobra’s, Rinkhals, Puff Adders, Berg Adders, Boomslangs, Black Mambas and numerous other snakes have all crossed paths with me. I’ve had very few dangerously close calls with snakes and have only been bitten once, by a Skaapsteker, whilst showing off to a group of learners!! That Here are some of the things that stood out for me: incident hurt my pride more than anything else. 1) Prevention is always better than cure when it comes to scorpions, spiders and snakes. Most treatment is symptomatic. 11) Snakes can have vast variations in colouration so use distribution maps when trying to identify them 12) The most venomous snakes (those with the most lethal venom) are not accountable for the most deaths. 13) There are key points to look for as to what indicates if a snake may be of a venomous species 14) Key first aid points that are vital - ‘time istissue’ for cytotoxic bites. Always have a plan in dealing with snake bites. Get the person to a hospital with a trauma unit or meet an ambulance enroute, don’t just go to the nearest clinic. These 14 points are just a taste of the course. It was definitely not a normal snake course that I’ve been on before. Johan Marais is well recognized as an expert in the field and it came across in the details of the course. I took copious notes and was given a two books on snakes and snake bite first aid at end. The theory was very detailed and was followed by a test so as to give certification to those who successfully completed the course. After lunch there was a Poisonous Snake Handling course which was also certified. I never signed up for this course but Johan offered to let me stay and even allowed me to participate out of interest, for which I am very grateful. During the afternoon Johan gave a short talk on the tools and correct equipment to use when capturing snakes, how to handle them, what to watch out for and then how to release them. I was amazed to hear him say a snake must be released at least 4-5 kilometers away from where it was

caught otherwise they may return to their home territory. From here he demonstrated how to catch a Puff Adder using a snake hook. We all had a turn catching it and placing it in the bucket. This was followed by training on how to use Snake Tongs with each of us having to demonstrate our ability to catch a fake snake before moving on to a real live Cape Cobra and Boomslang. Personally I was glad it was a cold day and the snakes were not that active even though they did make it known they did not appreciate being handled. Those who successfully completed the Snake Handling Course could apply to register with the local authorities/ Cape Nature to become registered as professional snake removers. The course ended with the handing out of certificates, booklets and posters. In all it was well worth attending. I realized that even though I thought I knew more than average about snakes and snake bites, I was still not up to scratch. In some areas I even questioned what I had been trained on my level 3 first aid certification. Hearing it from a professional, with lots of experience makes a big difference. If you are working on camps, in areas where your guests are exposed to snakes, or even if you just want to learn more this course is not your average run of the mill snake lecture. It will put you in good stead for years to come, and for all you know, it may even save a life. Safety in our industry is becoming more and more important. I challenge you to up your game when it comes to snakes and how they affect the work you are involved in. Situated within the beautiful 1,000 hectare Umhloti Nature Reserve, 15 kilometres outside Nelspruit, the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) South Africa Chimpanzee Sanctuary is home to chimps that have been misplaced from their natural habitats in Africa. Chimp Eden was established in 2006 and is home to 33 chimpanzees. This JGI chimpanzee sanctuary brings the world of chimpanzees closer to humanity through education end eco-tourism. The goal of the chimpanzee sanctuary is to rescue chimpanzees that have survived the bush meat trade, been orphaned, traded in the illegal pet market, or rescued from being traumatised for entertainment in circuses, beach resorts and night clubs.

The chimpanzees spend their days in semi-wild enclosures, and show normal social interaction and behavioural patterns as group members. As valuable as a retreat can be, it requires a lot of advanced planning and preparation. The following checklist has been compiled in order to make retreat planning easier by providing a comprehensive checklist of things to consider, organize and do. It is advisable to have a retreat planning team in place before getting started. Checklist planning sections can be divided among individuals or groups with set tasks assigned to each group. BUDGET PLANNING

INITIAL PLANNING o Determine your audience. For whom is this retreat planned: men, women, couples, singles, youth? o Create a theme. Having a central idea makes organizing speakers and activities easier. o Schedule coordinating activities. Choose activities that fit the theme and meets the needs of attendees. o Set a date for the event.

o Create a budget to include costs of promotion, venue, activities, food, supplies, etc. o Secure a venue. Decide how much service you need for your group. A full service venue is recommended, but a selfservice venue may be more fitting for your budget.
