SHALLOW RELIEF The ability to think abstractly is a skill learned in the first year of architecture school as a foundation for compositional thinking. The shallow relief project uses thin layers of museum board to exercise our ability to abstract space in a compositional field.

Regulating lines from forms create implied space and play into a circulation that’s controlled and influenced by the composition. Shown is a hybrid image combining a digital rendering of the model and an analog field-shading drawing. By layering the drawings, their strengths are able to play off of each other and tell a story of their shared composition.

ANALYTICAL GEOMETRY

This analog perspective drawing technique utilizes the inherent relationships between a plan and elevation to create a mathematically correct viewport.

Using precedents, the purpose of this project is to strengthen our analog drafting skills through an analytical drawing technique. This provides a unique understanding of the building.

The 150,000 sq. ft Des Moines Library by David Chipperfield Architects features a two-story high, copper mesh, unitized curtain wall. This and other features allow the building to use 30% less energy than a conventional building.

To understand how the building operates, cutaway axonometric wall sections were constructed. These sections – along with detailed notes - would tell the story of the building’s materials and their role in the overall assembly.

SECOND FLOOR along the interior’s perimeter is an array of 6-meter spaced, 400mm-diameter concrete columns that support the floor and roof edges 124 x 76mm aluminum box section frames hold the glass panels on the first and second floor an aluminum mullion is formed by the interlocking extruded channels of the aluminum frames steel pedestals are glued to the concrete slabs and elevate 600mm x 600mm access floor panels up 400mm. this void space forms a supply air plenum in this forced-air air conditioning system. each steel mullion hooks over a support angle with two steel hangers that are bolted into place every 4’, a curtain wall support angle is fixed into a 76mm-deep pocket in the concrete slabs 460mm-thick reinforced concrete slab

GLASS WALL okatech is a triple-glazed insulating panel unit which wraps the entire facade, one 4’ x 13‘ panel at a time the second innermost glass panel has a low-emissivity coat, which minimizes infrared light coming through without reducing visual continuity an expanded copper mesh exists between the two outer layers of glass, blocking 69% of the sunlight and admitting just 7-22% of the sun’s heat, depending on the sun’s angle. from the inside, the mesh is quite transparent due to its inner face being in shadow. the outermost 5/16” glass panel is low in iron, allowing for greater visual clarity of the park from inside

TRIANGULATION On a 30’ x 150’ site, ten modular units differentiate themselves through their triangular shape. A gridded network places the units and implies spaces that afford gathering.

These angles provide the units with a distinct character which unifies and details the assembly and creates a curious, playful environment to explore. Sharp angles may be formed, which control movement and views of the spaces ahead, creating a continual experience from any point.

As part of the semester’s final project, construction manuals for the wire hand box were composed. Every detail had to be presented with clarity. Although a lengthy process, this project exercised our ability to communicate our design intent through the construction procedure.

BOUNDING BOX The bounding box is a fusion of everything compositional learned in first semester and begins with the wire hand inside: The wire hand is a gesture discovered during hand studies. The surrounding box echoes the gesture of the hand that it houses.

With the vellum cladding, I capture various viewports of the gestural wire hand and dimensionalize the box by providing new fields within which space exists. At the end, groups display their boxes together, to consider how their compositions mix or conflict.

CAMP LOOKOUT Camp Lookout Elementary School redefines what community means for a school. The main circulatory path is a circle that runs around and directs views into the community courtyard.

Steel is utilized in the building’s forms and resulting programs, creating a genuine steel building.

Sugar Creek’s “Elevated Arts” Center embraces its creative roots by reflecting the area’s culture. Outdoor space is divided by extrusions from the existing building, taking the form of planar elements. These planes then take on arts-based programs, including a performance space, social areas, workshops, and a gallery.
