The second in a series of books on the work of Allen+Philp Architects is a collection of projects at the “beginning”.

While Allen+Philp 1 began this journey by documenting a varied selection of the built works of Allen+Philp Architects, Allen+Philp 2 provides a glimpse of where we start, the concepts, thoughts and ideas that are the basis for what ultimately is constructed.

Filled with sketches, renderings, and context imagery, Allen+Philp 2 brings to light the design process that may or may not result in a building. Included within Allen+Philp 2 are images of embryonic ideas, experiments and playful whims, and realistic representations of buildings-to-be.

Our intent is to convey some of the thoughtful parts of our process. The context imagery accompanies the sketches to demonstrate the sensitivity to place; the understanding of its history. The level of definition in the drawings indicates a point in time within the design process; specifically to elicit a feeling or emotion, to capture the magic of the concept and to illustrate the attention given to the building in its surroundings.

Some of the work shown here may be built at the time of this reading. Some are still hopeful prospects for the future, while others may never be realized but may spark thoughts and ideas for new projects. Each is an important part of the continuing and evolving story of Allen+Philp Architects.

Kenneth L. Allen AIA, ISHC, is President and a Founding Partner of Allen+Philp Architects/ Interiors. His responsibilities within the firm include: business manager, new business development, programming and feasibility overview, presentations, and entitlement packaging. He fills a leadership and senior management role on select commissions.

Mark A. Philp, AIA, is Director of Design and a Founding Partner of Allen+Philp Architects/ Interiors. His responsibilities for the firm include defining design philosophy and direction and continual historical and contemporary research ensuring building typology familiarity, materials, and systems. More than 50 projects have received awards for design excellence under his direction.

Mr. Allen has supported his profession, and the community, by serving on numerous boards and commissions, including Design & Development Review Board and the Redevelopment Board in the City of Scottsdale. He has served on the Arizona State Board of Technical Registration, has been a guest design critic and lecturer in the College of Architecture at Arizona State University, and is a featured speaker at development and design industry conferences and seminars.

His project specific responsibilities include listening, interpreting, setting design and program direction through the design charette process, program integration into the overall project composition through working with design team members, leading the project design effort to craft the exterior and interior architecture and sequencing of spaces.

He has given personal attention to the creation of special destinations and their design personality.

Mr. Allen attended the College of Architecture at Arizona State University, is licensed as an Architect in eight states, holds certification from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, and is a member of select professional organizations: American Institute of Architects (AIA), International Society of Hospitality Consultants (ISHC), Urban Land Institute (ULI), National Council of Architectural Boards (NCARB), American Resort Development Association (ARDA).

Mr. Philp attended the College of Architecture at Arizona State University, is licensed as an Architect and holds certification from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, and is a member of the American Institute of Architects.
