ASPA CONTEST OVERVIEW DEADLINE: March 5, 2018 • LATE DEADLINE: March 12, 2018 MAIL-IN CONTESTS Arkansas Scholastic Press Association member staffs may enter materials for competition in the areas of broadcast, film, literary magazine, print newspaper, online newspaper and yearbook. Ratings of superior, excellent and honorable mention will be awarded. Entries will be judged in the following divisions: • 7A • 6A • 5A • 4A • 3A • 2A • 1A • Freshman Academy/Junior High & Middle School See the broadcast, film, literary magazine, print newspaper, online newspaper and yearbook mail-in contest detail forms for more information on each category and the entry fees.

GENERAL EXCELLENCE AND ALL-ARKANSAS The deadline for General Excellence and All-Arkansas is March 5, 2018— the same date as all other entries. Broadcasting, film, literary magazines, print newspapers, online newspapers and yearbooks will first be judged for General Excellence, and superior, excellent and honorable mentions will be awarded. Winners of superior ratings will then be judged for All-Arkansas. All-Arkansas awards are presented to the best broadcast programs, literary magazines, print newspapers, online

newspapers and yearbooks in the state—approximately the top 5% of publications. See the General Excellence entry forms for more information. The entry fee is $5.

OF-THE-YEAR AWARDS Member staffs may nominate candidates for Literary Magazine Editor of the Year, Print Newspaper Editor of the Year, Online Newspaper Editor of the Year, Yearbook Editor of the Year, Broadcast Journalist of the Year, Broadcast Producer of the Year, Photojournalist of the Year, Broadcast Video Editor of the Year, Designer of the Year, Journalism Writer of the Year, Literary Magazine Writer of the Year, Business Manager of the Year, Broadcast On-air Talent of the Year, Film Producer of the Year, Film Director of the Year, Film Script Writer of the Year, Film Editor of the Year, Film Cinematographer of the Year, Adviser of the Year and Administrator of the Year. The entry fee for each of these categories is $5, except Adviser of the Year and Administrator of the Year. Entry into these two categories is free. See the information enclosed for each of the of-the-year awards for more information.

Late entries must be postmarked on or before March 12, 2018, and must include all late fees. Entries postmarked after March 12 or any late entry that does not include applicable late fees will be disqualified.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFO Awards for all entries will be presented during the ASPA Convention and Contest on April 19 and 20 at the Fort Smith Convention Center. You must follow all guidelines for each individual category. Not following the guidelines could result in an entry being disqualified. Please send a typed list of all students (with the school’s name and adviser’s name) entered in contests to ensure names are correct on certificates. Checks for entry fees should be made payable to Arkansas Scholastic Press Association and should be enclosed in the entry package or paid on ASPA’s website. BROADCAST

All entries must have been produced during this 2017-2018 school year by a current ASPA member staff. Only one entry per category per school may be entered unless otherwise indicated. All entries should be submitted using thumb drives. See Page 63 for details. Enclose the $2 entry fee for each entry. Make checks payable to Arkansas Scholastic Press Association or pay with a credit card by selecting “Online Payments” on the ASPA website. B1—Broadcast Daily News Program/ Announcements: One continuous segment of a daily student-produced program.

F4—Film Art Direction/Set Design: Less than 30 seconds. F5—Film Costume Design: Less than 30 seconds.

B2—Broadcast Weekly Show: Send one show as it originally aired—no compilation shows— not less than ten minutes and not longer than 30 minutes.

F6—Film Sound Design: Less than one minute.

B3—Broadcast Monthly Magazine Show: Send one show as it originally aired—no compilation shows— not less than 10 minutes and not longer than 30 minutes.

F8—Short Narrative Film: Less than five minutes.

B4—Broadcast News Package: One segment. 2:30 maximum.

F10—Experimental Film: Less than five minutes.

B5—Broadcast Human Interest or Serious Feature Package: This is a non-fiction category. 2:30 maximum.

F11—Documentary: Less than 30 minutes.

B6—Broadcast Sports Package: One segment about a sports-related topic. May be a news or feature story. B7—Broadcast Humorous Feature Package: Any parody, satire, original scene, etc. designed to entertain or evoke laughter. B8—Broadcast Show Opening: Student-produced opening for any show (45 seconds maximum). B9—Broadcast Weather Less than three minutes.

CATEGORIES

All material submitted must be original student work.

M1—Shorter Poem: Seven lines or fewer. A staff may submit TWO entries. Pay two entry fees if two poems are submitted.

Entries must have been produced during the 2016-2017 OR 2017-2018 school year. You may send some entries from this year’s literary magazine and some from last year’s, but you CANNOT use an entry two years in a row. If you entered something in a mail-in contest last year, you may NOT enter it again this year. Only one entry per category per school may be entered unless otherwise noted in the category information. If you do not submit your entries online, use glue, rubber cement or transparent tape to attach the official entry form to the back of each entry. Do not use paper clips or staples. Enclose the $2 entry fee for each entry. Make checks payable to Arkansas Scholastic Press Association or pay with a credit card by selecting “Online Payments” on the ASPA website.

M2—Poetry: Eight to 15 lines. A staff may submit TWO entries. Pay two entry fees if two poems are submitted. M3—Longer Poem: 15 or more lines. A staff may submit TWO entries. Pay two entry fees if two poems are submitted. M4—Essay: A staff may submit TWO entries. Pay two entry fees if two poems are submitted. M5—Short Story: A staff may submit TWO entries. Pay two entry fees if two poems are submitted. M6—Feature Article: Story may be on any subject: human interest, profile, etc. Only ONE entry is permitted. M7—Drama. Fewer than 20 pages. Only ONE entry is permitted.

M8—Design: Submit one single page or a double-page spread. Only ONE entry is permitted.

GUIDELINES All material submitted must be original student work. Remember: Several of the categories on the next page (print newspaper mail-in contests) may be entered by online newspaper staffs as long as there are no more than one entry in each category from a single school. In other words, a school can only enter one newspaper news story, not one from the print newspaper and one from the online newspaper. All entries must have been produced during this 2017-2018 school year by a current ASPA member staff. Only one entry per category per school may be entered. Each entry must be printed and attached to the back of an official entry form, orif the web page will be accessible to the judges through April 1, 2018, you can simply list the web address on the entry form or upload the entry online. W4—Sports Package: A sports news or feature story that includes interactive material (link to video footage, online graphic, etc.). W6—Interactive Graphic: Reader must be able to interact with the graphic: polls, comment section, etc. W7—Commentary: An audio or video program or file that’s posted to a website and made available for download. ASPA SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS DEADLINE: March 5, 2018 • Late Entries Not Accepted • No Entry Fee

A one-time, $500 scholarship will be awarded to a student who will attend a public or private college or university and major in journalism, broadcast or film. Other related fields of study may be awarded by the discretion of the scholarship committee. The winner of the scholarship will be announced at the ASPA Convention and Contest in Fort Smith on April 19. A check for the scholarship will be sent directly to the college or university upon proof of enrollment by the student.

QUALIFICATIONS •

The applicant must be a high school senior enrolled in an Arkansas high school—public or private.

About JEA National J Sister Rita Jeanne Scholarships, named for JEA’s longtime treasurer, recognize some of the top high school journalists in the country. The contest begins at the state level. Winning portfolios from state Journalist of the Year competitions are sent to the national level. Portfolios are judged at the JEA/NSPA Spring National High School Journalism Convention, and winners are announced at the convention’s concluding awards ceremony. Scholarship funds — $3,000 for the top winner, and $850 each for runners-up (up to six runners-up awards are usually given) — are released to the student after the winners are announced. Deadline

Deadlines vary from state to state, so check with your JEA State Director for contest information specific to your state, including where to send your entry. Do not send your entry to JEA Headquarters. The state contest coordinator must send the winning state entry to be received at JEA by March 15.

OVERVIEW Students start the competition within their home state. Please contact your JEA State Director for instructions on state contest submission. The tools on this site were designed for use at state and national contests, but candidates need to verify the procedures listed here are what they should do to enter their state first. For national Journalist of the Year submissions, all entries must be digital. There are resources available here to help candidates get moving on the process. Candidates are required to organize their work examples in their digital portfolio by these 11 areas. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Is this contest for seniors only? Yes, eligible applicants must be seniors. It is never too early, however, to start building a portfolio of work examples. That can start at any time. Is this contest only for those majoring in journalism or related field for college? No. Can a candidate skip entering the state contest and apply only for the national contest? No, candidates who enter the national contest must be the winner of their state contest. If a candidate is submitting for the state contest, should he/she use form on JEA’s website? No, the online submission form on JEA’s website is for the national contest only. At the state level, candidates should contact their state director to obtain submission. Are there any limits on how many work examples a candidate can enter? Because the contest is digital, there is no limit. But keep in mind that judges only have a certain amount of time to review a portfolio. So quality over quantity is important when considering what work to include.

Journalist of the Year The goal is to showcase the student journalist.

Is there a certain resume format to use? Or are there requirements of what to include on a resume? There is not a particular format to use for the resume. Again, the goal is to showcase the student journalist. Listing experience that qualifies a candidate for this contest is important. Like the work examples, narrow down and choose quality over quantity. Do work examples need to be in published format? This is a two-part answer: 1. If the work has been published, it is not required to be submitted in its original context. It is important, however, for candidates to prove themselves as student journalists. For most cases, the judges will view the published work examples as the more credible approach. 2. If the work hasn’t been published, it still can be included, but the candidate must explain in the reflection/analysis why the work was included. If a candidate has published work that was done outside of school, is that acceptable to enter? Yes. Candidates are welcome to include work not in their school media as part of their work examples.

New categories have been added for candidates to show their versatility (Entrepreneurship, News Gathering, Editing, etc.). Who should a candidate ask to write their letters of recommendation? Candidates should ask those who know them best and can speak to the significance of their journalism experience. Can a candidate post the letters of recommendation and/or transcript on the portfolio website? These items are required to be uploaded for the national contest. This information should be kept private.

Students applying for JEA’s Journalist of the Year must complete the requirements and guidelines listed below as a part of their portfolio:

There are two parts to the application: 1) the application form, which includes personal information (contact information, transcript, letters of recommendation, résumé), and 2) the online portfolio of the student’s work, which judges will access via URL. See below for more details.

Deadline: All entries on the state level should be submitted to the state director/designated official, Stephanie Emerson, MJE, by the March 5, 2018. Applicant’s adviser must be a current JEA member. Applicant must have participated in student media for a minimum of two years. Applicant must be a senior in high school.

The following must be attached to the online application: • Official high school transcript or a counselor’s statement including journalism classes taken, grades and current GPA. Student should be a high school senior and should have an overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. • Action photo of applicant involved in some aspect of student media, and an extended caption written for that photo. If there is more than one dominant subject in the photo, please use location of candidate (left, right, etc.). • Three letters of recommendation from those who know the applicant well and understand the impact of the journalistic experience on the student’s life (no letter should exceed two pages in length). • Personal résumé. • Self-analytical essay: Students should write with passion and make an impact on the judges because this essay functions as the applicant’s oneon-one interview with the judges. Essay should not exceed two pages in length.

LABELING THUMB DRIVES The reason ASPA stopped using thumb drives in the past was because they have gotten so small that they often got lost in the shuffle of more than two thousand ASPA contest entries, but because of their convenience, we have decided to begin using them again. The key is making sure they don’t get lost. Think of them as keys for gas-station bathrooms: you want to attach something large to them so they aren’t lost. A variety of labels on strings are available at most store and are large enough to keep thumb drives from being lost. If the files on the thumb drives are named correctly, how they are labeled is not that important, but here are a few examples you may want to follow:

HOW TO SUBMIT HOW TO PAY YOUR FILES ONLINE ONLINE 1. Go to arkansasscholasticpressassociation.org. 2. Click on 2018 Contest Information. 3. Scroll down to the section titled “SUBMIT ASPA CONTEST ENTRIES ONLINE.” 4. Click on the button that reads “ENTER ASPA CONTESTS ONLINE.” 5. Under “ASPA2018,” select “Browse...” 6. Locate the files you wish to enter and select “open.” You can choose files one at a time or select multiple files by holding down the “command” key on a Mac or the “control” key on a PC. 7. Once selected the file name will appear next to “Browse...” if you select only one file. The number of files selected will appear if you select multiple files. 8. Click on “Send Files.” 9.
