Spring Break in Allendale is full of simple joys, local favorites and plenty of ways to make memories right in your own backyard!

For families with a child on the autism spectrum, finding the right support is an important step. At Sonder Center for Neurodevelopment, that support begins with a clear perspective: every child is seen as a whole person with a unique story worth celebrating. From the first phone call, families connect directly with one of the centers founders, who provide honest communication and realistic timelines for starting services; no long waitlists, just transparency and a genuine desire to help.

A NEW CHAPTER IN ALLENDALE

Sonder Center for Neurodevelopment opened its center-based location in October 2025, though the company began serving families through in-home services in 2024. The center was co-founded by Aubrey Pettyplace M.A., BCBA, and Maxwell Torres M.Ed., BCBA, driven by a vision that prioritizes both exceptional family care and a positive work culture. Together, Aubrey and Maxwell built Sonder on the belief that quality care starts with supporting the people who provide it, creating an environment where both families and staff thrive.

The name itself, Sonder, reflects this foundation: the profound realization that each person you meet is living a life as vivid and complex as your own. “We don’t just provide services, we recognize that everyone has a unique story worth honoring” the co-founders share. “We’re here to be the sidekicks in their stories.”

This philosophy shows up in everything Sonder does, from the moment families walk through the door.

Sonder Center for Neurodevelopment: Where Every Story Matters

Step into Sonder and you’ll immediately notice something different. The center features a distinctive comic book theme, creating a colorful, welcoming environment designed to feel less clinical and more like a place where kids actually want to spend time. The center includes an indoor sensory gym that keeps clients engaged, active, and excited to come to their sessions. From swings to crash pads to climbing structures, the space is designed to meet sensory needs while making therapy fun.

And it’s not just the kids who are welcomed with warmth. While families wait in the lobby, staff are happy to make them a complimentary latte or tea; a small gesture that reflects Sonder’s commitment to making every family feel valued and cared for.

A SPACE DESIGNED FOR JOY

Sonder specializes in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, a scientifically proven approach that helps individuals with autism develop communication, social, and daily living skills while reducing challenging behaviors. Each program is tailored to the individual child’s needs, strengths, and goals. The team uses evidence-based practices combined with creative, engaging activities to make therapy effective and meaningful.

“Families aren’t just clients, they’re part of our story, too.” the team shares. “We’ve built something special here: a place where children and families have true partners in their journey.”

Sonder offers flexible scheduling with daytime services for younger children and evening sessions for schoolaged clients, making it easier for families to fit therapy into their lives. But what truly makes Sonder effective isn’t just the structure, it’s the people delivering the care.

A TEAM BUILT ON PASSION AND GROWTH

The majority of the staff are Grand Valley State University students pursuing degrees in psychology, special education, and related fields. They’re not just working a job, they’re building careers centered on helping others. Under the guidance of experienced Board Certified Behavior Analysts, this dedicated team creates an environment where children feel safe, seen, heard, and understood.

To support staff pursuing careers in this field, Sonder has established an educational assistance program that helps clinical team members with student loan repayment after completing each year of service. It’s one way the center demonstrates its commitment to investing in people who are dedicating their lives to this work, and to building a strong foundation for serving the Allendale community.

ROOTED IN COMMUNITY, COMMITTED TO CARE

Since opening the center location, Sonder has been growing steadily, welcoming new families and expanding their team while maintaining their commitment to individualized care. The center is actively involved in the Allendale community. “We really like being in Allendale and are so happy to serve families in this community,” the owners share. “We’re focused on growing thoughtfully, making sure every family gets the attention and support they deserve.”

Sonder takes time to truly get to know each child and family, showing up consistently and compassionately. The team understands that behind every goal and data point are real kids with real families who deserve genuine support and partnership. They celebrate every victory, whether it’s a child using a new word, making eye contact, or navigating a challenging transition, and make sure families know their progress is seen and valued.

As Sonder continues to grow, the commitment remains the same: to provide high-quality, individualized ABA therapy delivered by people who genuinely care. For families in Allendale and surrounding areas seeking support for their child with autism, Sonder offers both expertise and heart.
