A endale was a sma town...
By Kathy Hanes | Writer and Allendale Historian
Allendale is celebrating 175 years of being a township this year. It has grown from an ‘out in the country’ small town to a suburb of Grand Rapids. The population went from 1,900 families in 2000 to 25,000 residents by 2022. Lifelong residents live alongside newcomers and the housing market is booming. And yet that small town feel came alive recently as Allendale celebrated with an M45 Celebration on Saturday, September 14.
There was something for everybody. Perhaps you were looking to run or walk in a race? It happened down M45! Looking for craft items or farmers market goodies? There were booths set up in the park! How about music to ll the air? Nailed it, along with laughter, friends and families enjoying the shows! And we cannot forget the vendors and food trucks lined up and serving the best smells along with their food items. Accompanying the food was the beer and cider tent where you could take a break from the activities all around. All of this, plus, a carnival, kid’s activities and cornhole tournament that kept participants active and jumping for joy! And I cannot forget to mention the drone show that happened in the evening part of the celebration. It was spectacular! Of all the feedback, reactions, and chatter that I found on social media that day, the drone show was a hit for so many! It was a job well done by all!
Planning for an event like this is no small task, so a huge shout-out to Tricia Roslund, Lexi Hunt and Angie Ecklund who were the powerhouse team for this tremendous day of fun for the Allendale community. It was as if there was a checklist of things that should be included for a family day of fun, and this crew checked them all!!! And an event like this cannot be a success without the support of its sponsors. Thank you all for your support and participation!
If you missed this year’s M45 Celebration, plans are already set in motion for next year. It is going on my calendar, and I am telling you that you don’t want to miss any part of it! Because…
Allendale is still a small town. And that’s good enough for me!

Safety Drill Week
Allendale Public Schools recently completed a successful Safety Drill Week, where students and staff participated in a series of fire, lockdown and tornado drills to ensure everyone is prepared for potential emergencies These drills are an important part of our commitment to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment, allowing students and staff to practice emergency procedures in a calm and controlled setting We are proud of how seriously everyone took these exercises, demonstrating a clear understanding of how to respond effectively in the various situations We also appreciate the support from parents and guardians in reinforcing the importance of safety preparedness at home
Asbestos Management Plan

2024/2025 Advisory
To All Parents Dear Parent/Guardian: Allendale Public Schools has adopted an Integrated Pest Management program Inherent with this is Allendale Public Schools’ efforts to reduce pesticide use as much as possible While it may occasionally be necessary to apply a pesticide, this program does not rely on routine pesticide applications to resolve problems We use various techniques such as habitat alteration, sanitation, mechanical means, exclusion, etc. to prevent pests from becoming a problem. As required by Michigan law, you will receive advanced notice of non-emergency application of a pesticide (insecticide, fungicide, or herbicide), other than bait or gel formulation, which is made to the school, school grounds, or buildings This advance notice of a pesticide application will be given 48 hours before the application by the following two methods: 1) Posting at the primary entrances to your child’s school. The entrances that will be posted are the main entrance and those that have a sidewalk that leads directly to a parking lot 2) Posting in the common area located by the main office of the school
Please note that notification is not given for use of Sanitizers, germicides, disinfectants or anti-microbial cleaners In certain emergencies, such as an infestation of stinging insects, pesticides may be applied without prior notice to prevent injury to students, but you will be promptly notified following any such application, via the two posting methods identified (above) You may review the school’s Integrated Pest Management program and records of any pesticide application upon request by contacting Gary Torno, Director of Operations at (616) 892-3480 or via email at tornogar@apsfalcons.net.
Parents or guardians of children attending Allendale Public Schools are also entitled to receive the advance notice of a pesticide application, other than a bait or gel formulation, by first class United States mail postmarked at least 3 days before the application, if they so request If you would like to be notified by mail, please contact the Operations Department at andersonkat@apsfalcons.net. Please give your name, mailing address and what school(s) your child or children attend and they will put your name on the advance notification by US Mail list Sincerely, Gary Torno, Director of Operations, (616) 892-3480, tornogar@apsfalcons net
BizStream Celebrates 23 Incredible Years of Creativity, Growth, and Innovation
Originally launched as Schmidt Technologies Incorporated in Grand Rapids, MI, we began our journey with just two computers, one folding table, and big dreams.
From those humble beginnings, working out of a tech rm’s shared space—and even from a small apartment at times—we quickly made a name for ourselves by developing a custom intranet portal for one of the world’s leading manufacturers of audience seating. That rst project laid the foundation for our future, and while we’ve since broadened our focus, portal development remains central to who we are. In fact, our Juvenile Case Management product, YouthCenter, is now used by 42 organizations across Michigan and in 10 other states, continuing our legacy of building solutions that make a di erence.
In 2006, we returned to our roots by moving operations to Allendale, where we’ve proudly become an active part of the community. Our founder, Mark Schmidt, attended Allendale Public Schools and Grand Valley State University, and our co-founder, Brian McKeiver, is a proud GVSU graduate. With half of our team also being GVSU alums, our connection to the university and the local community runs deep. Giving back to the community that has supported our growth is a key part of our company culture. Whether sponsoring localevents or contributing to educational and charitable e orts, we take pride in making a positive impact both locally and globally.
Today, BizStream stands as a leading digital agency, specializing in strategy, design, and development to elevate brands, websites, and online products. We’ve grown into one of the most respected Kentico and Kontent.ai partners worldwide, with a talented team dedicated to solving complex problems for enterprise clients with custom design and clean code. While we’re proud of the journey that got us here, we’re even more excited about what the future holds!
