City of Nacogdoches Boards and Commissions Applications The Nacogdoches City Secretary's Office is now accepting applications for the following Boards and Commissions for January 2025: Airport Advisory Board; Building Standards Commission; Health Code Advisory Committee; Industrial Development Authority Board; Main Street Advisory Board; and the Nacogdoches Cemetery Board. Friday Update Convention & Visitor’s Bureau Visit Nac's new Group Sales & Services Coordinator, Lauryn Pennington, just completed her first week. We're excited to welcome Lauryn to the team! Stop by and say hello! Event hosts are monitoring weather for this weekend. Safety above all else is the priority, and events will be cancelled if safety for attendees or participants are in jeopardy. If the parade moves forward, please see the attached parade route map and street closure schedule. Jingle Jams on the Square featuring the Elise Road Band is scheduled for Saturday, December 7th at 4:30pm! Come enjoy Christmas music with us as we kickoff the parade! The CVB Board will meet next Wednesday, December 11th for its regular scheduled Board Meeting at 4:00pm in the Visitor Center basement.

Nacogdoches Main Street We have a jam packed weekend full of Christmas fun and the festivities start this evening! Main Street Christmas Movie Night Join us in downtown Nacogdoches for a festive evening at the Nacogdoches Main Street Christmas Movie Night! On Friday, December 6th at 6:30 p.m., we’re screening The Grinch for free at the CVB Stage (200 block of Pilar Street). Bring your family, friends, and blankets, and settle in for a cozy night filled with holiday magic. Enjoy a hot chocolate stand and fun dessert vendors on this fun family night out.
New Holiday Decorations Downtown The Nacogdoches Main Street Program is excited to unveil a new 12-foot lighted angel at Eugenia Sterne Park. This new addition honors the original angels, purchased by community members in memory or honor of loved ones, with a commemorative plaque listing their names at the base. To preserve the legacy of the original angels, the Nacogdoches Main Street Program will host an Angel Lighting Ceremony on Sunday, December 8th, 2024, at 5:00 PM at Eugenia Sterne Park (700 E Main St.). The event will include the unveiling of a commemorative plaque listing all the names they represented, and families and loved ones are invited to attend. Families may contact the Main Street office at 936-559-2562 if they wish to reclaim their original angel as a keepsake. A big thank you to the City of Nacogdoches employees who worked hard to prepare downtown for the holiday season. The Parks, Public Works, Streets, and Maintenance Departments have done an incredible job!

Friday Update Nacogdoches Historic Sites SFA Chamber Singers Perform at Zion Hill The community enjoyed an amazing performance by the SFA Chamber Singers this past Tuesday. The group sang holiday favorites in a cappella, creating a magical and memorial evening. Directing the concert was Dr. Michael Murphy along with several of the SFA School of Music graduate students.
THE PURPLE HULLS: THIS SUNDAY! The Purple Hulls Holiday Concert, presented by Tipton Ford, is this Sunday, December 8th at Zion Hill. There will be two showtimes: 1:30pm and 6:00pm. There are still tickets left and we plan to sell tickets at the door (exact change/check). Guests are encourage to arrive early to find parking and take part in pre-show activities. The Big Picture Events are sponsoring a photo booth, Grump’s Coffee will be setup outside selling warm coffee drinks, and we will have refreshments including Susu’s Popcorn. A parking map is available on the concert webpage and on facebook showing the various options for parking and drop off. We have golf carts (sponsored by Memorial Hospital) that will drive around the Zion Hill area to help guests get to the front doors. We would like to thank our amazing maintenence staff for helping us put up a large canopy to cover the main entrance of the church to help guests safely enter should there be rain. This concert is sure to be memorable holiday experience you won’t want to miss!

Friday Update Nacogdoches Public Library We have had a wonderful response to the Books from Santa book giveaway. There are still free books available for children. Families can sign up to have their child(ren) receive a free book from Santa Claus. Children will receive a gift-wrapped book. The date for pickup has been rescheduled to December 19th between 4:00 to 5:30pm. Families may choose between Clifford’s Christmas (0-5 years), Clifford at the Circus (0-5 years), Powwow Day or The Snowy Day (ages 5-8 years) and The Barren Grounds (ages 9-12 years). One book per child while supplies last. Registration is available on eventbrite.com. For more information, please call 936-559-2970. This program is funded (in part) by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and Texas State Library and Archives Commission (Grant # LS253655-OLS-23).* (2024) The Storytelling Days, the StoryCorp-inspired event, has been extended to December 2nd - 14th. As part of the ongoing book discussion of There There, the library will provide an opportunity for families to interview and record the older members of their families. The recordings will then be added to the national StoryCorp archives for anyone to access. All sessions are free, but an appointment is requested. For more information, please contact library staff at 936-559-2970. NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. The NEA Big Read Celebration of the book, There There, winds down with a book discussion and poetry reading. The library will host a book discussion on Tuesday, December 10th at 5:30pm for grown-ups and a kids book discussion at the same time. The poetry reading will be held Saturday, December 14 from 2:00-3:00pm. Registration for all events can be found at eventbrite.com.

Friday Update Public Works Public Works crews are currently in zone 20. One truck is designated for clearing leaves and the other truck is picking up brush. Citizens can still haul their brush and bagged lawn debris for unlimited free dumps to the City Landfill located at 4602 N.W. Stallings Dr., with their City of Nacogdoches issued water bill and ID/DL showing proof of residence. Brush & Yard Waste Pickup • Tree limbs and brush shall be stacked on street right-of-ways, or within 3 to 6 feet of the curb or street. o Stacks shall not exceed 6'L X 4'W X 4'H and be limited to three piles. o The maximum diameter of the largest limb shall not exceed 12 inches in diameter. o Brush must be stacked in front of the residence that generated the brush. o Brush placed on vacant lots or in the streets will not be picked up. o Limbs should not extend into the roadway. Bagged yard waste o Bagged yard waste collection is "ONLY" available for residential addresses. o Bagged yard waste shall be placed within ten feet of the edge of the roadway for collection. Yard waste must be properly bagged. o The city will only collect 20 bags per residence per week. o Bagged Yard Waste may also be disposed of at the City landfill, for no charge, provided that the: -Resident provide current copy of water bill & drivers license as proof of residence.

Friday Update Fire Department Nacogdoches Fire Department Announces Promotions and Personnel Additions During the past two months, the NFD has seen important changes in our personnel. Driver Engineer Kenny Hiliard retired after 21 years of service, and Probationary Firefighter Drake Jackson and Firefighter Cadet Brian Barnes have joined our ranks. Jackson is a fully certified firefighter currently performing a month of training emphasizing NFD baseline protocols and wider City of Nacogdoches operations before beginning a multi-month rotation through each station and crew on his shift. Firefighter Cadet Barnes is attending an EMT certification course while also receiving hands-on training corresponding to his EMT curriculum. Barnes will attend the Angelina College Fire Academy in February to obtain his Structural Firefighter Certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. Firefighters Jimmy McDonald, 12 year veteran, and Mark Lee, 16 year veteran, each promoted to the position of Driver Engineer, and 20 year veteran Dusty Arreguin promoted to Fire Captain. Fire Captain Jody Chandler was promoted to Division Chief - Fire Marshal, and will be overseeing technical code enforcement, fire and arson investigation, and supporting city-wide development activities. A promotional ceremony to honor these important events will be held at a date to be determined.

Friday Update Code Enforcement --------------------------------------The City of Nacogdoches now requires property owners/managers to obtain a Sign Permit to display feather signs on certain commercial or multifamily apartment properties.

Our opening day at Ritchie Street Park was a great success! Attendees who joined the celebration had the chance to win signed basketballs from the SFA Men’s and Women’s teams through a raffle. Children and parents explored and enjoyed our brand-new playground and basketball court.
Winter break is just around the corner. Winter Break mini camps are open for registration. Parents can choose one or both mini camps January 1st and 2nd and/or January 6th and 7th. These mini camps are only $35 for each mini camp. Camp is from 9am to 3:30pm each day and campers will play games, do crafts, participate in library activities, gymnastics and so much more. Registration will only be available until all spots have been filled.

Friday Update Animal Services HSNC will reopen on Monday, January 6, 2025. They have done some restructuring in order to best serve our community while maintaining best practices to ensure continued funds for their programs. Changes to their emergency aid program as well as their TNR and spay/neuter assistance programs have been made. Applications are available on their website but will not be processed until their reopening after the first of the year. Our City is helping support shelter animal adoptions and networking by inviting pets to spend time in City offices. We have had pets at the Rec for several weeks now and that has been hugely successful. We will continue to have pets at the rec, and now our finance and water departments will be hosting pets as well. This program is helping our animals get adopted and is a huge morale booster for our employees.
