Finance Office Receives Excellence Award
The City of Nacogdoches Finance office received the GFOA Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. This is an award for the 2023 audit.
Low Interest Rates secured for Nacogdoches
Following the Federal Reserve lowering rates by three quarter basis points this fall and with another quarter cut in December the interest rates on some investments lowered also. To counter that we had positive certificate of deposit solicitations and were provided with interest rates that were some of the best seen and by a local institution. We were also one of the few to lock in quality rates beyond 12 months at 12, 18 and 24 months.

Nacogdoches City Council Honors Local Model Train Enthusiast
At this week’s meeting of the Nacogdoches City Council, Nacogdoches resident George Ellis was recognized by the City Council for his selfless work putting together the Loblolly Model Train display at the Nacogdoches Train Depot, which has taken place annually since 2011 Mayor Randy Johnson and Councilwoman Kathleen Belanger also conferred the title of Honorary City Architect onto Ellis via a special proclamation.

Wassail Fest

Main Street Christmas Movie Night

New Holiday Decorations Downtown
The Nacogdoches Main Street Program is excited to unveil a new 12-foot lighted angel at Eugenia Sterne Park. This new addition honors the original angels, purchased by community members in memory or honor of loved ones, with a commemorative plaque listing their names at the base. To preserve the legacy of the original angels, the Nacogdoches Main Street Program will host an Angel Lighting Ceremony on Sunday, December 8th, 2024, at 5:00 PM at Eugenia Sterne Park (700 E Main St.). The event will include the unveiling of a commemorative plaque listing all the names they represented, and families and loved ones are invited to attend. Families may contact the Main Street office at 936-559-2562 if they wish to reclaim their original angel as a keepsake.
A big thank you to the City of Nacogdoches employees who worked hard to prepare downtown for the holiday season. The Parks, Public Works, Streets, and Maintenance Departments have done an incredible job!

Make memories at the Loblolly Model Train Display
The annual display opens the Friday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 29th) and runs for three weekends. As a special treat on opening day, Susu’s Popcorn has graciously donated free popcorn bags to give out to children (while supplies last).
There are so many wonderful programs and events happening at the historic sites this holiday season We have three amazing performances at Zion Hill On Tuesday, December 3rd, the SFA Choral Choir will do an a cappella holiday concert, tickets are $8 ($5 for students and seniors) and can be purchased online or at Zion Hill. On Sunday December 8th, the Purple Hulls will have two showtimes at 1:30pm and 6:00pm, tickets are $35 and can be purchased at the CVB or online On Friday, December 19th, the Westminster Community Handbell Choir will have a free concert (registration required) at 6:00pm

An event we are introducing this year is a Victorian-themed Christmas Dinner at the SterneHoya House Friday, December 13th This event will give attendees a fun way to learn about and experience what Christmas was like during the time the Hoya family occupied the home in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This event will feature a themed dinner, holiday drinks, live string music, and dance lessons (sponsored by Gobel School of Dance) As an added feature of the evening, we are encouraging guests to dress in Victorian era attire with a prize for the evening’s best dressed Tickets for this event are limited and can be purchased at eventbrite.com or in-person at Zion Hill.

As part of the ongoing book discussion of There There, the library will provide an opportunity for families to interview and record the older members of their families in a StoryCorp-inspired program. NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.
The library is pleased to announce that another one of its students in the Citizenship Study Group passed the requirements for naturalization this past Tuesday!
The free citizenship class is every Wednesday at 5:30pm for adults 19+ years. No registration is required and students may join anytime.
Families can sign up to have their child(ren) receive a free book from Santa Claus. Children will receive a gift-wrapped book that they can pick up between 34:30pm on December 23rd. Families may choose between Clifford’s Christmas (0-5 years), Powwow Day or The Snowy Day (ages 5-8 years) and The Barren Grounds (ages 9-12 years). One book per child while supplies last. The library’s borrowing collection includes nontraditional items, such as, family board games, fishing rods, baking and cookware, sewing machines, telescopes, backpack STEM kits, and much more. Items from the Library of Things collection can be borrowed with the regular NPL card. Families can also access hundreds of movies and shows through the library’s streaming service, Kanopy. Public Works crews are currently clearing clearing the leaf route in zone 92& the brush route in zone 14.
Citizens can still haul their brush and bagged lawn debris for unlimited free dumps to the City
Landfill located at 4602 N.W. Stallings Dr., with their City of Nacogdoches issued water bill and ID/DL showing proof of residence.
Brush & Yard Waste Pickup
• Tree limbs and brush shall be stacked on street right-of-ways, or within 3 to 6 feet of the curb or street.
o Stacks shall not exceed 6'L X 4'W X 4'H and be limited to three piles.
o The maximum diameter of the largest limb shall not exceed 12 inches in diameter.
o Brush must be stacked in front of the residence that generated the brush.
o Brush placed on vacant lots or in the streets will not be picked up.
o Limbs should not extend into the roadway. Bagged yard waste
o Bagged yard waste collection is "ONLY" available for residential addresses.
o Bagged yard waste shall be placed within ten feet of the edge of the roadway for collection.
Yard waste must be properly bagged.
o The city will only collect 20 bags per residence per week.
o Bagged Yard Waste may also be disposed of at the City landfill, for no charge, provided that the:
-Resident provide current copy of water bill & drivers license as proof of residence.

The City of Nacogdoches now requires property owners/managers to obtain a Sign Permit to display feather signs on certain commercial or multifamily apartment properties.
FEATHER SIGN (aka teardrop) means a sign in a feather, flutter, square, teardrop, and half drop shape usually self-supported or supported by a flexible pole(s) and firmly affixed to the ground.
Feather signs are only allowed in the following districts:
- B-1, B-2, B-3, & M zoning districts
- R-4 districts (multifamily apartments only)
A permit must be obtained from the City of Nacogdoches for all new or continued use

We have received the final renderings for the new playground at Robert McCrimmon Park. The existing equipment will be removed, and the installation of the new playground is planned for early 2025.

Gary, a 2 year old male cur mix spent the day working at the Recreation Center His strengths are greeting the public and his track skills especially high jump and cross country. He is quiet and sweet with a super soft coat!
Gary is up for adoption at the Nacogdoches Animal Shelter and is looking for his furever home! If you ’ re interested in adopting Gary, swing by the Animal Shelter to learn more and fill out an application.

Animal Services will be appearing on the first Sunday of every month at Chili’s for Pooches on the Patio. Come out and visit with one of our star animals from the shelter and get the scoop on how to be a regular or short term foster parent. HSNC is still working on their end of year close out and restructuring They will be closed for services to the public until the first of the year.
Our “Pets at the Rec” program is off to a 3 for 3 start in getting our featured pet adopted after a “hard” day at the C.L Simon Recreation Center. Our featured pet this week is Gary, a two year old Cur mix with a very sweet and friendly disposition!
