Nacogdoches Parks & Recreation is pleased to announce that the newly rebuilt portion of Maroney Park playground is now open to the public!
This section of the playground was damaged in a 2023 fire and has been carefully restored to fit the remainder of the older structure. Come out and enjoy the new playground area today!

Convention & Visitor’s Bureau
This week the Visitor Center will be open with limited hours on Friday, July 4th from 10am-4pm Normal hours will resume on Saturday (10am4pm) and Sunday (1pm-4pm.)
Freedom Fest is this Friday, July 4th in Festival Park at 5:30pm! Fireworks will begin at dusk.

Historic Sites
Throughout the month of July, the Nacogdoches Historic Sites staff are hard at work on several important behind-thescenes projects. We’re preparing portions of our collections for an upcoming storage move, tackling building maintenance tasks, and designing new interpretive signs for our sites. And as always, we ’ re busy planning engaging events and programs for the fall season
While July may be a quieter month for public events, this time allows our team to focus on all the essential work that preserves and shares Nacogdoches history for our community and visitors alike.

We will have some special guests joining us for Junior Engineer Days in the coming weeks On Thursday, July 7 , Nacogdoches Fire & Rescue will bring a fire truck for the kids to explore, on July 17 our friends at the Texas Forestry Museum will be here to share how railroads impacted the lumber industry, and on July 24 we will have a representative from Operation Livesaver to share information about train safety.
Make sure to join us at the Nacogdoches Railroad Depot every Thursday from 10am to 12pm.
Nacogdoches Public Library
The Nacogdoches Public Library was one of 50 Texas public libraries to receive a Collection Enhancement grant from Texas Book Festival, a foundation established by former first lady Laura Bush, to promote literacy and support public libraries. The library will purchase juvenile and teen graphic novels, large print books, and nonfiction books with the $2500 grant award.
Assistant library manager Danny Gonzalez recently spoke to the Nacogdoches Newcomers group about the various library programs and services the library offers. Danny promoted the summer programs that are open to everyone.
Local author Myrna Johnson will present in this month’s Dinner Conversation series, The Alzheimer’s Experience. Johnson will focus on the writing process and her personal experience with caregiving for a loved one with Alzheimer’s. The event to be held on July 8th at 5:30pm is free. The Nacogdoches County Humane Society will begin its Remarkable Creatures series on July 11th with a presentation about the colorful flowers and bees that are essential for plant production. The series is every Friday in July from 10am to 11am. All ages are welcome and no registration is required.

Public Works crews are currently clearing the leaf route in zone 20 and the brush route in zone 6.
Citizens can still haul their brush and bagged lawn debris for unlimited free dumps to the City Landfill located at 4602 N.W. Stallings Dr., with their City of Nacogdoches issued water bill and ID/DL showing proof of residence.
Brush & Yard Waste Pickup
• Tree limbs and brush shall be stacked on street right-of-ways, or within 3 to 6 feet of the curb or street.
o Stacks shall not exceed 6'L X 4'W X 4'H and be limited to three piles.
o The maximum diameter of the largest limb shall not exceed 12 inches in diameter.
o Brush must be stacked in front of the residence that generated the brush.
o Brush placed on vacant lots or in the streets will not be picked up.
o Limbs should not extend into the roadway. Bagged yard waste
o Bagged yard waste collection is "ONLY" available for residential addresses.
o Bagged yard waste shall be placed within ten feet of the edge of the roadway for collection.
Yard waste must be properly bagged.
o The city will only collect 20 bags per residence per week.
o Bagged Yard Waste may also be disposed of at the City landfill, for no charge, provided that the:
-Resident provide current copy of water bill & drivers license as proof of residence.

Engineering/Public Works
Engineering staff have been working on final preparations of two applications for the TxDOT Transportation Alternatives (TA) Set-Aside program, one for a sidewalk on South Street and one for an Active Transportation Plan on North Street, and those were submitted today A special thank you to Jason Vickery for doing the leg work to get these compiled and submitted, saving the City on consultant fees which would have been needed if the work had been outsourced. Staff is hopeful that these projects will be competitive and ultimately successful in receiving these grants.

July is Parks and Recreation Month. This July marks National Recreation and Park Association’s 40th annual Park and Recreation Month! Maroney Park Playground reopened at the end of June. Lots of families attended the park reopening and children were enjoying all of the new elements such as the rope climb and crawl tube.
