Nacogdoches Public Library

Library staff took the virtual reality headsets that were purchased with the Special Projects Grant: Armchair Adventures to Westward Trails Assisted Living this week Sixteen residents and staff got to try the headsets and experience “travel” to far off places such as the South Pole These headsets are specifically designed to be used in elder care settings as they provide an opportunity for users to “feel” the experience of travel in a safe and comfortable environment. More visits to area assisted living centers are planned. The grant is sponsored by the Institute of Museum & Library Services and Texas State Library and Archives Commission.

Library staff are preparing for the Color Our World Summer Reading & Programs. Programs will be offered for all ages, and everyone is encouraged to participate in summer reading. Reading during the summer for school-age youth helps prevent “ summer slide,” the loss of valuable reading skills that were attained during the school year Prizes have been provided by area businesses and the Nacogdoches Friends of the Library

City of Nacogdoches

Engineering/Public Works

In an effort to train our Water Utilities and Utility Construction staff and facilitate and expedite their licensure in the water and wastewater fields, the Engineering Department in August of 2022 began quarterly hosting of needed water and wastewater courses which are required by TCEQ for licensure. An ancillary benefit of hosting these courses has been the saving of expense of City operators traveling for these courses and bringing spending to Nacogdoches from the out-of-town participants.

This week, the Engineering Department organized and hosted a multi-day Water Utility Safety course for operator training. Nine (9) City staff members took the course, as well as operators from the City of Huxley, City of Timpson, Lilly Grove SUD and two (2) private companies. There were 15 total students in the class, our best attended course to date.

Since starting this program almost 3 years ago, it has been a successful endeavor resulting in several City operators obtaining licenses and we are already planning our next course offering for later this fall.

A special thank you to the Community Services Department and in particular the Library for allowing the use of their classroom this week.
