The Nacogdoches Mayor's Committee on People with Disabilities

Join us for the free Ability Strong Festival on Saturday, May 3, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Banita Creek Park North in Nacogdoches, featuring a petting zoo, pony rides, games, live music, and food for individuals with physical and mental disabilities, their families, caregivers, and the public, hosted by the NMCPD.

It was an eventful week for Visit Nacogdoches! We hosted the Texpert Hospitality Workshop on Tuesday at the Fredonia Hotel. We had 40 attendees earn their "Texas Friendly Certification" after learning about core hospitality principles, manners, conflict resolution as well as tourism tips and best practices

Azaleas are in peak bloom, and our Visitor Center has been buzzing with tourists. Two travel writers from Hey USA! are in town today, and they'll be exploring Nacogdoches today and tomorrow.

Nac Snack is this Friday from 11am-2pm with Food Trucks on the square. The next Nac Snack Friday will be April 25th

Warrant Forgiveness Program

The Nacogdoches Municipal Court is offering a warrant forgiveness program. Through this program, all warrant fees will be removed when a citizen voluntarily contacts the court to pay a minimum of onehalf the total amount due and start a payment plan for the balance owed. Anyone that chooses to pay their fine and court costs in full will save an additional 20% off the fine amount The court will also offer assistance to individuals that may not be able to pay half down or pay in full to work out an agreeable action plan. This program will be available February through April. Anyone that comes to the court to resolve their outstanding warrants will be given safe harbor.

Nac Historic Sites launches “Remember Zion Hill...” Facebook Group

Historic Sites staff have launched the "Remember Zion Hill..." Facebook group as a platform for Zion Hill congregation members and those with history tied to the church and neighborhood to share pictures and memories.

This initiative helps document the church’s rich heritage and provides a space for community members to contribute their personal connections to its history.

Studies show that social media platforms can serve as digital archives, preserving collective memory and strengthening community identity in new ways This project is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure Zion Hill’s history is accessible and remembered for future generations

Living History of Oak Grove Cemetery Tour returns April 12th

On Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 10 a.m., visitors are invited to the Living History of Oak Grove Cemetery Tour, presented by Friends of Historic Nacogdoches, Inc and Nacogdoches Historic Sites

Talented reenactors will bring historical figures to life, sharing their stories along guided tours As participants explore the cemetery, they will admire its historic gravestones and rich heritage. Oak Grove Cemetery is a designated Historic Texas Cemetery, home to signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence, Texas Revolution soldiers, and influential East Texans who shaped the region’s history.

Nacogdoches Public Library

The Judy B. McDonald Public Library is one of 102 public libraries, out of 542 Texas libraries, to receive the 2024 Achievement of Library Excellence Award from the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association (TMLDA,) an affiliate of the Texas Municipal League. To successfully receive the Achievement of Library Excellence Award, the library must exhibit excellence by providing services to underserved and special populations, marketing in innovative ways, pursuing collaborative efforts, offering enhanced services through unique or expanded programming, providing literacy support, providing for digital inclusion, supporting workforce development, promoting cultural, topical, and educational programming, comprehensively training staff, and offering other unique services to their community. The library staff wishes to thank the wonderful volunteers, partner organizations, and Nacogdoches community for their support.

AARP Free Tax Help will conclude on April 9th. The free tax preparation services are free, but an appointment is required. To learn more or to make an appointment, please contact library staff at 936-5592970.

The City IT department recently made some updates to the library’s printing services. Now customers can send a print job to the library’s printer from anywhere and then pick up their print job during regular library hours! To access the printing services remotely, customers may visit the library’s website for instructions or go directly to https://www.airprinter.com/nacogdoches. The Book Character March Madness Tournament continues. Readers can vote in the children, teen or adult book character brackets. Voting can be done at the library or on the library’s website.

Public Works

Public Works crews are currently clearing brush in zones 5 and 19.

Citizens can still haul their brush and bagged lawn debris for unlimited free dumps to the City Landfill located at 4602 N.W. Stallings Dr., with their City of Nacogdoches issued water bill and ID/DL showing proof of residence.

Brush & Yard Waste Pickup

• Tree limbs and brush shall be stacked on street right-of-ways, or within 3 to 6 feet of the curb or street.

o Stacks shall not exceed 6'L X 4'W X 4'H and be limited to three piles.

o The maximum diameter of the largest limb shall not exceed 12 inches in diameter.

o Brush must be stacked in front of the residence that generated the brush.

o Brush placed on vacant lots or in the streets will not be picked up.

o Limbs should not extend into the roadway.

Bagged yard waste

o Bagged yard waste collection is "ONLY" available for residential addresses.

o Bagged yard waste shall be placed within ten feet of the edge of the roadway for collection. Yard waste must be properly bagged.

o The city will only collect 20 bags per residence per week.

o Bagged Yard Waste may also be disposed of at the City landfill, for no charge, provided that the:

-Resident provide current copy of water bill & drivers license as proof of residence.

Engineering/Public Works

City of Nacogdoches stormwater drainage contractors will be continuing work on the Ridgebrook Drive Drainage Improvements Project that commenced on Thursday March 20, 2025. Ridgebrook Drive will continue to be closed to through traffic for the duration of the project between Gardenbrook Street and CherryBrook Street while these much needed improvements are completed. Please use caution while traveling in this area

Local traffic will be accomodated We will continue to update our social media pages of any changes in traffic advisory during these improvements.

As part of the 2025 Curb and Valley Gutter Project, new concrete valley gutters have been installed on Monk Street, Yolunda Street, Ila Street, Patton Street and Shirley Street this week. Weatherpermitting, work will continue next week on locations mentioned in prior updates Residents should use caution while driving through these areas and thru traffic should plan alternate routes, if possible.

Bids were received this week for ARPA Sanitary Sewer Collection System Improvements. Staff will be bringing a contract award to City Council for consideration at the April 15 meeting.

A Pre-Construction Meeting was held this week for the Surface Water Treatment Plant (SWTP) Filter 1 Rehabilitation Project with the contractor, McKinney & Moore of Texas. Materials are being ordered and could take several months to receive at the site. Once materials are received, construction will begin.

Bids will be received next Tuesday, April 1 at 2:00 PM for CDBG MLK Water Line Improvements

Recreation Department

Corporate Challenge begins next week. Corporate Challenge is for companies in Nacogdoches to participate with the purpose of promoting increased communication, planning, skills, employee motivation, and employee collaboration. 15 Nacogdoches companies will compete against each other this year in 13 events for the title of 2025 Corporate Challenge Champion. Next week’s events will be Trivia, 3v3 Basketball and Bowling. Good Luck Teams!

Summer camp registration will begin May 1st. Space is limited so register early. Running of the Blueberries 5K, 10K and 1 mile will be on June 14th during the Texas Blueberry Festival.

Recreation Department

Our Parks staff has been hard at work this week, getting the fields in top shape for the exciting kickoff of Youth Soccer and Youth Softball season! Let the games begin!

Parks installed our 2nd Teqball Table, generously donated by USA Teqball, at Festival Park (near West Cox Street) for our community to enjoy. Teqball is a great combination of table tennis and soccer. The sign near the table includes a QR code that links to a "how to play" video.
