Notice is hereby given of the Deadline to File Applications for a Place on the Ballot, for the May 3, 2025, Regular Election. City Council seats up for election are: Northeast Ward, Northwest Ward, and At Large Mayor. Applications will be accepted starting January 15, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. to February 14, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.

As of 5:00 p.m. on January 30, 2025, the following candidates have filed an application for a place on the May 3, 2025, General Election ballot for City Council Member for the City of Nacogdoches. The filing period will end on February 14, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.

The election is set for Saturday, May 3, 2025.

Early voting will begin April 22, 2025, through April 25, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and April 28, 2025, through April 29, 2025, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Nacogdoches County Courthouse Annex at 203 West Main Street, Nacogdoches, Texas 75961. Please contact the County of Nacogdoches for further voter information.

Convention & Visitor’s Bureau

This week Executive Director Ashley Morgan presented to the Nacogdoches Rotary club, highlighting the tourism industry in Nacogdoches.

The CVB Monthly Board Meeting will take place next Wednesday, February 12th at 4:00pm in the Visitor Center Downstairs Basement.

Water Utilities

PROTECT OUR WATER RESOURCES

Improper disposal of hazardous materials can harm local ecosystems and degrade essential community resources. Everything sent down the drain ends up in nearby streams, creeks, and rivers.

Key reasons why hazardous waste shouldn't go down the drain:

• Environmental harm: Hazardous chemicals can directly pollute rivers, lakes, and groundwater if they aren't properly filtered out at the treatment plant.

• Damage to infrastructure:

• Damage to infrastructure: Certain hazardous materials can corrode pipes and damage the sewer system itself.

• Impact on wastewater treatment: Hazardous substances can interfere with the biological processes used to clean wastewater, rendering the treatment ineffective

• Operator safety: Exposure to hazardous waste can pose a health risk to line and plant Operators.

Municipal Court

Warrant Forgiveness Program

The Nacogdoches Municipal Court is offering a warrant forgiveness program. Through this program, all warrant fees will be removed when a citizen voluntarily contacts the court to pay a minimum of onehalf the total amount due and start a payment plan for the balance owed. Anyone that chooses to pay their fine and court costs in full will save an additional 20% off the fine amount The court will also offer assistance to individuals that may not be able to pay half down or pay in full to work out an agreeable action plan. This program will be available February through April. Anyone that comes to the court to resolve their outstanding warrants will be given safe harbor.

SFA MLK Day of Service

We would like to thank the volunteer groups who came out last week to volunteer at a few of our sites for MLK Day of Service.

We had volunteers help us organize event supplies, dust pews, and sweep at Zion Hill and volunteers at the Durst-Taylor house helped clean the siding of the house, and prepare for the gardens for Spring planting.

AARP Tax Aide has begun their free tax preparation services. Assistance will be offered every Monday and Wednesday until April 9th by appointment only. There are no age or income limits. Please contact library staff at 936-5592970 for an appointment or more information.

Attorney Heather Patterson from Lone Star Legal Aid will provide a program on wills and estate planning on Tuesday, February 11th at 5:30pm. Public Works

Public Works crews are currently clearing the leaf route in zone 1 and brush in zone 15.

Citizens can still haul their brush and bagged lawn debris for unlimited free dumps to the City Landfill located at 4602 N.W. Stallings Dr., with their City of Nacogdoches issued water bill and ID/DL showing proof of residence.

Brush & Yard Waste Pickup

• Tree limbs and brush shall be stacked on street right-of-ways, or within 3 to 6 feet of the curb or street.

o Stacks shall not exceed 6'L X 4'W X 4'H and be limited to three piles.

o The maximum diameter of the largest limb shall not exceed 12 inches in diameter.

o Brush must be stacked in front of the residence that generated the brush.

o Brush placed on vacant lots or in the streets will not be picked up.

o Limbs should not extend into the roadway. Bagged yard waste

o Bagged yard waste collection is "ONLY" available for residential addresses.

o Bagged yard waste shall be placed within ten feet of the edge of the roadway for collection. Yard waste must be properly bagged.

o The city will only collect 20 bags per residence per week.

o Bagged Yard Waste may also be disposed of at the City landfill, for no charge, provided that the:

-Resident provide current copy of water bill & drivers license as proof of residence.

Police Department

Citizen’s Police Academy

The Nacogdoches Police Department is set to host a Citizens’ Police Academy Feb 3May 12 This 14-week program aims to provide citizens with a comprehensive understanding of the Nacogdoches Police Department and the field of law enforcement.

Sgt. Brett Ayres, the program coordinator, stated, “The initiative offers a thorough examination of law enforcement, focusing specifically on the policies and procedures of the Nacogdoches Police Department. It seeks to inform citizens about the rationale behind our decisions and the methods we employ in various situations.”

The program will commence on February 3rd, with the graduation ceremony planned for May 12th Classes will take place at the police department every Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Attendance is free of charge, but enrollment is limited to 24 participants.

Engineering/Public Works

The newly rebuilt Clarifier #4 at the Wastewater Treatment Plant was started up this week and is being tested If all goes as expected, it will be brought back online in the treatment process next Monday It will operate for a month or so to make sure there are no further issues to address, then Clarifier #3 will be taken offline for its rehabilitation.

Code Enforcement

The City of Nacogdoches now requires property owners/managers to obtain a Sign Permit to display feather signs on certain commercial or multifamily apartment properties.

FEATHER SIGN (aka teardrop) means a sign in a feather, flutter, square, teardrop, and half drop shape usually self-supported or supported by a flexible pole(s) and firmly affixed to the ground. Feather signs are only allowed in the following districts:

- B-1, B-2, B-3, & M zoning districts

- R-4 districts (multifamily apartments only)

A permit must be obtained from the City of Nacogdoches for all new or continued use Fees are $25 00 per permit application

Parks Department

A massive shoutout to our amazing friends at the Parks Advocacy League (PAL) for their incredibly generous donation to our Parks Department! For years, PAL has been fundraising tirelessly to enhance our local parks, and their hard work is making a huge impact. Thanks to this donation, Robert McCrimmon Park and Ritchie Street Park will soon have brand-new shaded benches and picnic tables—creating even better spaces for our community to enjoy!

Recreation Department

Adult coed softball and Youth volleyball registration ends this Sunday. Youth volleyball players interested in working on their mental game can join our volleyball mindset clinic where they will work on drills while focusing on how to mentally prepare for the sport. This clinic will be offered March 22nd in the Recreation gymnasium.

Spring break camp registration opened this week. Camp will be offered for March 10-14 during NISD spring break. The 5-8 year old camp group is already almost halfway full. Registration will stay open until full or until the first day of camp.
