Notice is hereby given of the Deadline to File Applications for a Place on the Ballot, for the May 3, 2025, Regular Election. City Council seats up for election are: Northeast Ward, Northwest Ward, and At Large Mayor. Applications will be accepted starting January 15, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. to February 14, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.

As of 5:00 p.m. on January 30, 2025, the following candidates have filed an application for a place on the May 3, 2025, General Election ballot for City Council Member for the City of Nacogdoches. The filing period will end on February 14, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.

Early voting will begin April 22, 2025, through April 25, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and April 28, 2025, through April 29, 2025, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Nacogdoches County Courthouse Annex at 203 West Main Street, Nacogdoches, Texas 75961. Water Utilities

PROTECT OUR WATER RESOURCES

Improper disposal of hazardous materials can harm local ecosystems and degrade essential community resources. Everything sent down the drain ends up in nearby streams, creeks, and rivers.

Key reasons why hazardous waste shouldn't go down the drain:

• Environmental harm: Hazardous chemicals can directly pollute rivers, lakes, and groundwater if they aren't properly filtered out at the treatment plant.

• Damage to infrastructure:

• Damage to infrastructure: Certain hazardous materials can corrode pipes and damage the sewer system itself.

• Impact on wastewater treatment: Hazardous substances can interfere with the biological processes used to clean wastewater, rendering the treatment ineffective

• Operator safety: Exposure to hazardous waste can pose a health risk to line and plant Operators.

Municipal Court

Warrant Forgiveness Program

The Nacogdoches Municipal Court is offering a warrant forgiveness program. Through this program, all warrant fees will be removed when a citizen voluntarily contacts the court to pay a minimum of onehalf the total amount due and start a payment plan for the balance owed. Anyone that chooses to pay their fine and court costs in full will save an additional 20% off the fine amount The court will also offer assistance to individuals that may not be able to pay half down or pay in full to work out an agreeable action plan. This program will be available February through April. Anyone that comes to the court to resolve their outstanding warrants will be given safe harbor.

Lecture with Dr. Sosebee at Zion Hill

Friends of Historic Nacogdoches, Inc. (FoHNI) is excited to host a free public lecture on Thursday, February 20th, at 4:30 PM at the Zion Hill. Dr. Scott Sosebee will present "Sam and Anna: A Love Story? The Unconventional Courtship of Sam Houston and Anna Raguet "

Down East Boys concert at Zion Hill Feb. 28th

On Friday, February 20th, the southern gospel quartet, the Down Eat Boys, will perform a concert at Zion Hill at 7:00pm. Tickets are $25 for general admission, and $20 for seniors. The concert is sponsored by XETX Business Solutions.

Nacogdoches Beefsteak Dinner

The Beefsteak Dinner this past Friday was a huge success! A special thanks to all City Staff and NCHF board members who helped organize and work the fundraiser. Proceeds from the evening help with the continued care and preservation of Zion Hill

Promoting Zion Hill as a Venue at the I Do Bridal Expo

This past Saturday, our site coordinator, Krysten Sexton, represented Zion Hill at the I Do Bridal Expo in Tyler, TX. While there, she connected with potential renters and successfully promoted Zion Hill not only as a beautiful space for ceremonies but also as a perfect location for bridal photography. Nacogdoches Public Library

AARP Tax Aide Volunteers are offering free tax help at the public library each Monday and Wednesday from February 3 - April 9th by appointment only There are no age or income limits Please contact library staff at 936-5592970 for an appointment or more information

The public library is celebrating Chinese New Year on Saturday, January 25th from 1:003:00pm. The free event will feature food, crafts and decorations to ring in the Year of the Snake. All ages are welcome to attend and no registration is required. The purpose of the event is to provide families an opportunity to learn about world cultures and the services offered at the public library.

The public library is partnering with UT Tyler Center for Community and Rural Health Education by hosting a lunch and learn workshop on January 29th. The topic will be the new blood pressure machine that will be added to the library’s Library of Things Collection Participants will learn how to use the blood pressure machine to get accurate readings This take-home machine will be available to anyone with a library card The noon workshop is free, but registration is requested through eventbrite com

La Charla: Spanish Conversation Group resumes January 27th at 5:30pm. The group is for adults who want to practice their Spanish-speaking skills through fun, informal conversation. There are no registration requirements. The group meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month at 5:30pm.

Public Works

Public Works crews are currently clearing the leaf route in zone 5 and brush in zone 7.

Citizens can still haul their brush and bagged lawn debris for unlimited free dumps to the City Landfill located at 4602 N.W. Stallings Dr., with their City of Nacogdoches issued water bill and ID/DL showing proof of residence.

Brush & Yard Waste Pickup

• Tree limbs and brush shall be stacked on street right-of-ways, or within 3 to 6 feet of the curb or street.

o Stacks shall not exceed 6'L X 4'W X 4'H and be limited to three piles.

o The maximum diameter of the largest limb shall not exceed 12 inches in diameter.

o Brush must be stacked in front of the residence that generated the brush.

o Brush placed on vacant lots or in the streets will not be picked up.

o Limbs should not extend into the roadway. Bagged yard waste

o Bagged yard waste collection is "ONLY" available for residential addresses.

o Bagged yard waste shall be placed within ten feet of the edge of the roadway for collection. Yard waste must be properly bagged.

o The city will only collect 20 bags per residence per week.

o Bagged Yard Waste may also be disposed of at the City landfill, for no charge, provided that the:

-Resident provide current copy of water bill & drivers license as proof of residence.

Police Department

Citizen’s Police Academy

The Nacogdoches Police Department is set to host a Citizens’ Police Academy Feb 3May 12 This 14-week program aims to provide citizens with a comprehensive understanding of the Nacogdoches Police Department and the field of law enforcement.

Sgt. Brett Ayres, the program coordinator, stated, “The initiative offers a thorough examination of law enforcement, focusing specifically on the policies and procedures of the Nacogdoches Police Department. It seeks to inform citizens about the rationale behind our decisions and the methods we employ in various situations.”

The program will commence on February 3rd, with the graduation ceremony planned for May 12th Classes will take place at the police department every Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Attendance is free of charge, but enrollment is limited to 24 participants.

A Pre-Construction Meeting was held with Alsay, Inc., the contractor for the Well 11 Rehabilitation Project which was awarded at the January 7 meeting. Construction of those improvements will begin soon

Code Enforcement

The City of Nacogdoches now requires property owners/managers to obtain a Sign Permit to display feather signs on certain commercial or multifamily apartment properties.

FEATHER SIGN (aka teardrop) means a sign in a feather, flutter, square, teardrop, and half drop shape usually self-supported or supported by a flexible pole(s) and firmly affixed to the ground. Feather signs are only allowed in the following districts:

- B-1, B-2, B-3, & M zoning districts

- R-4 districts (multifamily apartments only)

A permit must be obtained from the City of Nacogdoches for all new or continued use Fees are $25 00 per permit application

Recreation Department

Kid Fish was well attended on Saturday by approximately 250 people. 31 kids registered in the fishing tournament and they caught a total of 123 fish. A big THANK YOU to the fire department for grilling the sausages and the Nacogdoches Bass Club for helping with the tournament weigh in. Head start also attended and donated some prepackaged snacks. Next year's Kid Fish event will be January 24th, 2026.

Did you know city employees can utilize the Recreation Center for free? City employees can use our gymnasium and weight room and participate in classes and sports leagues. Click here for our gymnasium times. Some popular classes to join are Zumba, Bodyweight Burn and Fencing. We offer adult softball and adult outdoor soccer leagues that are currently open for registration for the spring. Contact us at 936-559-2960 for any questions.

Coco has been working hard all day at the Rec Center! He has greeted and checked in for the gymnasium, played security by roaming the halls to make sure all the doors are locked up tight, used his amazing jumping skills to see oversee the office and showed off his computer skills. Coco is looking for his forever home. He loves to be around people and enjoys laying in laps and being held. He would be a great addition to any family!
