City Happenings

The Merry Christmas Market is taking place on November 8-9 in Downtown Nacogdoches! Take advantage of special deals and promotions as you get a head start on some holiday shopping! Shoppers are invited to enter our gift basket drawing by visiting 5, 10, or 15 locations, collecting stamps, and submitting their punch card by Monday at 2 PM.

Nacogdoches Historic Sites is hosting a Veteran’s Day celebration at the Loblolly Model Train Diplay inside the Nacogdoches Train Depot on November 8-9. The exhibit will feature special military themed tributes and is free and open to the public

Food trucks & vendors will add to the magic with tasty offerings sure to warm you up. The parade kicks off at 6:30, so be sure to bring chairs and blankets to watch the festivities!

Wettermark Bank Building

The old Wettermark Bank Building/ Roma’s Italian Kithcen was selected as the winner in the renovation and restoration category for cities under 50,000 in the Texas Downtown Association’s President’s Awards Program. This recognition celebrates the building’s remarkable transformation after nearly 50 years of vacancy. Originally constructed in 1896 by architect Diedrich Rulfs as the Wettermark State Bank, the building at 124 E Main St has housed various businesses over the years, including barber shops and drug stores, before falling into disrepair In 2022-2023, it underwent a major renovation led by Kim Crisp, and is now home to Roma’s Italian Kitchen. Congratulations to Crisp and his team for their hard work and determination to bring new life into this historic building!

Texas Downtown Board

Tori Huddleston, City of Nacogdoches Main Street Manager, has been elected to the Texas Downtown Board! Starting January 1, 2025, Huddleston will join a dynamic board dedicated to revitalizing downtowns across Texas. The Texas Downtown Board not only leads initiatives in community development but also fosters meaningful relationships among members devoted to supporting vibrant, thriving Main Streets. Tori’s vision and commitment to downtown Nacogdoches make her a fantastic addition, and we ’ re excited to see her make an impact statewide Congratulations, Tori!

Wassail Fest

Join us for Wassail Fest on Saturday, November 30, from 11 AM to 3 PM in Downtown Nacogdoches as we celebrate Small Business Saturday with festive cheer! Our downtown merchants will be showcasing their best holiday wassail recipes, each competing for the title of Wassail Fest Champion

Stop by participating businesses downtown to sample their wassail creations and vote for your top three favorites. Cast your vote by scanning the QR code on Wassail Fest posters, or pick up a paper voter card at the Visitor Center to submit by 4 PM.

Loblolly Model Train open Veterans Day Weekend

George Ellis and J R will have their annual Loblolly Model Train open for a special Veterans day open house Friday, November 8th from 10am to 4pm and Saturday, November 9th 10am to 6pm. The Loblolly Model Train display is free to the public.

Nacogdoches Public Library

Despite the sporadic rain, the 11th annual Dia de los Muertos Festival was successful. Crowds enjoyed performances by musical groups, folklorico dancers and the Grupo de Danza Chikawa Aztec. There were approximately 90 food and retail vendors and it’s estimated that about 2000 people attended the event.

The library staff wants to thank the following City departments for their assistance: Police Department, Public Works, Maintenance, Parks, and Fire. The CVB staff stayed open for the event and CERT volunteers provided transport for people with mobility issues.

The event was also sponsored by Eaton Corp., Nacogdoches Friends of the Library and grants from NEA Big Read and Arts Midwest and TEC Energy.

The library staff wishes to give a special thanks to the staff of the Recreation Center who were instrumental in the planning and execution of the event!

As part of the NEA Big Read celebration of There There, Caddo Indigenous American scholar Lauren Haupt will discuss the themes of family, place and identity found in the novel by Tommy Orange. The book discussion will be held on November 12th at 5:30pm in the library. The event is free, but registration is requested through eventbrite.com.

NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. For more information, please call 936-5592970.

The monthly Lego Club meets November 16th from 12-1:30pm for children ages 5-12 years. The library provides thousands of Lego pieces for kids to build and share. The program is free and no registration is required.

The Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts, in collaboration with the Nacogdoches Public Library, is offering a free screening of the movie, Flowers of the Killer Moon, on Friday, November 8th at 6:30pm at the Cole Art Center. The event will feature a discussion as it relates to the NEA Big Read book, There There by Tommy Orange. The event is free, but registration is requested through eventbrite.com.

Public Works

Public Works crews are currently clearing clearing the leaf route in zone 20 & the brush route in zone 4.

Citizens can still haul their brush and bagged lawn debris for unlimited free dumps to the City

Landfill located at 4602 N.W. Stallings Dr., with their City of Nacogdoches issued water bill and ID/DL showing proof of residence.

Brush & Yard Waste Pickup

• Tree limbs and brush shall be stacked on street right-of-ways, or within 3 to 6 feet of the curb or street.

o Stacks shall not exceed 6'L X 4'W X 4'H and be limited to three piles.

o The maximum diameter of the largest limb shall not exceed 12 inches in diameter.

o Brush must be stacked in front of the residence that generated the brush.

o Brush placed on vacant lots or in the streets will not be picked up.

o Limbs should not extend into the roadway. Bagged yard waste

o Bagged yard waste collection is "ONLY" available for residential addresses.

o Bagged yard waste shall be placed within ten feet of the edge of the roadway for collection.

Yard waste must be properly bagged.

o The city will only collect 20 bags per residence per week.

o Bagged Yard Waste may also be disposed of at the City landfill, for no charge, provided that the:

-Resident provide current copy of water bill & drivers license as proof of residence.

The department is pleased to announce that officers Spencer Tutt and Nick McGuire have been selected as our newest Field Training Officers. As Field Training Officers, they will be responsible for training new police officers fresh out of the academy.

Burk Street Planned Closure

Burk Street Planned Closure - The City of Nacogdoches's stormwater drainage contractors will begin construction on the Burk Street bridge crossing on Monday November 4, 2024. To accomodate contractor mobilization, Burk Street will be closed starting Friday morning November 1, 2024 at 7:00 AM. Burk Street will continue to be closed to through traffic while these much needed drainage improvements are completed. Please use caution while traveling in this area.

Local traffic will be accommodated. We will continue to update our social media pages of any changes or additional traffic advisories while these drainage improvements are being completed.

Maroney, a 1 year old lab/pitbull mix, spent the day at the Recreation Center He took his job seriously and greeted every patron that came into the Recreation Center. He is a man of few words, but lots of action. He is very interested in pickleball and art. Maroney especially enjoyed meeting the children that came to tumble tots this morning. He enjoyed all of their praise and gently greeted each of them with a big lick. Maroney would be an amazing addition for any family with children. Maroney would like to find his forever home. Parks Department

Nacogdoches Parks ands Recreation is pleased to announce that the section of the Lanana Creek Trail from Park Street to Martinsville Street is now reopened to the public

Residents are still encouraged to use caution when walking this section of the trail and to avoid crossing any barriers or construction fencing that still exist on parts of the trail that reman closed. Special thanks to our Parks staff as well as the Nacogdoches Rotary Club for replacing our Park Street footbridge!

Work continues on the new Temple Spray Station and we hope to have an update on its opening soon!
