This week, our Nac Historic Sites team has been hard at work planning for an exciting spring season full of events, programs, and restoration projects.
We’ve set the date for the annual Oak Grove Cemetery Tour—it’s happening on Saturday, April 12th, from 10 AM to 1 PM, in partnership with Friends of Historic Nacogdoches, Inc.
We’re also busy brainstorming some fantastic concerts and speaking events at Zion Hill Baptist Church—stay tuned for more on those soon!
Beyond events, the team is focusing on restoration projects and caring for the collections at our historic sites, ensuring they’re well-preserved for everyone to enjoy.

The public library is celebrating Chinese New Year on Saturday, January 25th from 1:003:00pm. The free event will feature food, crafts and decorations to ring in the Year of the Snake. All ages are welcome to attend and no registration is required. The purpose of the event is to provide families an opportunity to learn about world cultures and the services offered at the public library.
All families are welcome to Bilingual Pajama Storytime on Thursday, January 23rd at 5:30pm. Families will hear stories in English and Spanish and children may come dressed in pajamas, if they wish. The event will feature stories and songs All ages are welcome and no registration is required
The public library is working toward increasing health literacy by partnering with UT Tyler Center for Community and Rural Health Education by hosting a lunch and learn workshop on January 29th. The topic will be the new blood pressure machine that will be added to the library’s Library of Things Collection. Participants will learn how to use the blood pressure machine to get accurate readings. This take-home machine will be available to anyone with a library card. The noon workshop is free, but registration is requested through eventbrite.com.

Public Works crews are currently clearing the leaf route in zone 21 and brush in zone 3.
Citizens can still haul their brush and bagged lawn debris for unlimited free dumps to the City Landfill located at 4602 N.W. Stallings Dr., with their City of Nacogdoches issued water bill and ID/DL showing proof of residence.
Brush & Yard Waste Pickup
• Tree limbs and brush shall be stacked on street right-of-ways, or within 3 to 6 feet of the curb or street.
o Stacks shall not exceed 6'L X 4'W X 4'H and be limited to three piles.
o The maximum diameter of the largest limb shall not exceed 12 inches in diameter.
o Brush must be stacked in front of the residence that generated the brush.
o Brush placed on vacant lots or in the streets will not be picked up.
o Limbs should not extend into the roadway. Bagged yard waste
o Bagged yard waste collection is "ONLY" available for residential addresses.
o Bagged yard waste shall be placed within ten feet of the edge of the roadway for collection. Yard waste must be properly bagged.
o The city will only collect 20 bags per residence per week.
o Bagged Yard Waste may also be disposed of at the City landfill, for no charge, provided that the:
-Resident provide current copy of water bill & drivers license as proof of residence.

Citizen’s Police Academy
The Nacogdoches Police Department is set to host a Citizens’ Police Academy Feb 3May 12 This 14-week program aims to provide citizens with a comprehensive understanding of the Nacogdoches Police Department and the field of law enforcement.
Sgt. Brett Ayres, the program coordinator, stated, “The initiative offers a thorough examination of law enforcement, focusing specifically on the policies and procedures of the Nacogdoches Police Department. It seeks to inform citizens about the rationale behind our decisions and the methods we employ in various situations.”
The program will commence on February 3rd, with the graduation ceremony planned for May 12th Classes will take place at the police department every Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Attendance is free of charge, but enrollment is limited to 24 participants.

LPerry Drive North Road Closure - The City of Nacogdoches's stormwater drainage contractors will begin construction on the drainage crossing on Perry Drive North starting Monday January 13, 2025 Perry Drive North will continue to be closed to through traffic until further notice while these much needed drainage improvements are completed. Please use caution while traveling in this area.
Local traffic will be accommodated. We will continue to update our social media pages of any changes or additional traffic advisories while these drainage improvements are being completed

Code Enforcement
The City of Nacogdoches now requires property owners/managers to obtain a Sign Permit to display feather signs on certain commercial or multifamily apartment properties.
FEATHER SIGN (aka teardrop) means a sign in a feather, flutter, square, teardrop, and half drop shape usually self-supported or supported by a flexible pole(s) and firmly affixed to the ground.
Feather signs are only allowed in the following districts:
- B-1, B-2, B-3, & M zoning districts - R-4 districts (multifamily apartments only)
A permit must be obtained from the City of Nacogdoches for all new or continued use Fees are $25 00 per permit application Sign Permit Applications are available online at: www.nactx.us/permit

Coming up this month, the Annual Kid Fish event will be held on January 25th 9am to noon at Lakeside Park. Kids ages 1-16 can participate in the tournament by weighing fish they caught during this time. Prizes will be offered to the winners.

Animal Services
HSNC reopened on Monday, January 6, 2025. They are currently working through all of the requests for help they received during their restructuring. They have returned to normal call hours M-F 12-4 and in office hours Tuesday and Wednesday 124.
As part of their new procedures, they are working with DeHart Mobile Vet Clinic to take care of spays and neuters for those that are receiving vouchers for their owned animals. DeHart will be at the shelter the first Tuesday of every month. They will only see animals by appointments made through their website.
