Community Happenings

It’s Homecoming weekend for SFA and the Lumberjacks Football team will be playing Nicholls inside Homer Bryce Stadium on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

The Homecoming bonfire will take place tonight across from Pecan Park and will be preceded by a drone lights show and a concert of country duo Maddie & Tae, beginning at 9:00 p.m.

This week the Visitor Center had several busy days due to some schools being out for Fall break. We also had several international visitors from Australia, New Zealand and a student group from Japan.

Merry Christmas Market –

November 7–8

Downtown Nacogdoches businesses will transform into a festive holiday destination during the Merry Christmas Market, a two-day open house event featuring extended shopping hours, decorated storefronts, and a chance to win one of our downtown gift baskets.

Event Hours:

November 7 | 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

November 8 | 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Shoppers who spend $25 or more at a participating business will receive a giveaway ticket to enter the drawing. Completed tickets can be dropped in ballot boxes located at the check out at participating businesses. Two winners will be drawn live on Facebook the following week.

Whether you ’ re getting a head start on holiday shopping or simply enjoying the atmosphere, it’s the perfect weekend to experience downtown at its most festive.

Exhibit Concepts to make a site visit to Zion Hill, the community is invited to a Meet & Greet on Thursday , Nov. 6 at 6:00pm th

The City of Nacogdoches Historic Sites Division is partnering with Exhibit Concepts, Inc., a nationally recognized exhibit design firm, to develop a new permanent museum exhibit inside the historic Zion Hill Baptist Church.

The exhibit will share the church’s rich history, highlighting its people, its role in the community, and the lasting impact of Zion Hill on Nacogdoches and beyond.

This Meet & Greet is a chance for congregation members, descendants, and community members to meet the design team, share memories and photos, and help ensure that the story of Zion Hill is told as fully and thoughtfully as possible. Your experiences and perspectives are at the heart of this exhibit.

DETCOG staff will visit the library on Oct. 21 at 12:30pm to provide information on the various sections of Medicare. Open enrollment has begun and many people are looking to make changes to their current plan or plan to enroll. This information will also be helpful for adult children who are caring for their parents. The program is free, but please register on eventbrite.com. st

The library is taking registration for the Type My Resume, Please! program on October 23 . On that day, library staff and volunteers will type resumes for job seekers. The library offers this service and other resources for job seekers and career development. The event is free, but registration is requested. Please call 936-559-2970.

Public Works

Public Works crews are currently clearing the leaf route in zone 20 and brush in zone 13.

Citizens can still haul their brush and bagged lawn debris for unlimited free dumps to the City Landfill located at 4602 N.W. Stallings Dr., with their City of Nacogdoches issued water bill and ID/DL showing proof of residence.

Brush & Yard Waste Pickup

• Tree limbs and brush shall be stacked on street right-of-ways, or within 3 to 6 feet of the curb or street.

o Stacks shall not exceed 6'L X 4'W X 4'H and be limited to three piles.

o The maximum diameter of the largest limb shall not exceed 12 inches in diameter.

o Brush must be stacked in front of the residence that generated the brush.

o Brush placed on vacant lots or in the streets will not be picked up.

o Limbs should not extend into the roadway. Bagged yard waste

o Bagged yard waste collection is "ONLY" available for residential addresses.

o Bagged yard waste shall be placed within ten feet of the edge of the roadway for collection. Yard waste must be properly bagged.

o The city will only collect 20 bags per residence per week.

o Bagged Yard Waste may also be disposed of at the City landfill, for no charge, provided that the:

-Resident provide current copy of water bill & drivers license as proof of residence.

Fire Department

This week some of our Nacogdoches Fire & Rescue personnel visited a local school to entertain and educate local children about fire safety and who to call in case of an emergency. Great job by Firefighters Brian, Chad, Chase and Frank!

The 2025 Street Paving Project continued this week with paving of Glen Hollow Drive and the remainder of Chaparral Drive, as well as the intersection of Chimney Rock at E. Starr Avenue.

Join us for Fall Craft Days. This is a free come-and-go event. All materials will be provided and all ages are welcome.

Youth volleyball will be taking pictures this Saturday.

This Saturday will be the last sign language class until the new year. Class begins at 10:15am and is open to ages 8+.

This Sunday is the last day of late registration for youth basketball Boys and girls ages 5-14 can register to be a part of this winter league. Click here to register. Volunteer coaches needed!

Parks Department

New weather alert systems were installed at at the Clint Dempsey Soccer Complex and Nacogdoches Baseball Complex. These systems are designed to enhance safety by sounding an alert when lightning is detected within a 10-mile radius. In addition, anyone can scan the QR code on the posted weather alert signs at each location to see up to date weather information for that area. These new systems will improve our safety communication protocols

Code Enforcement

SPECIAL EVENT SIGNS THAT DON'T REQUIRE A PERMIT, BUT NOTIFICATION IS REQUIRED:

Special event or public announcement signs;

a. Such signs shall be allowed up to 14 days prior to such event, but shall be removed within two days after the scheduled event.

b. Such signs may be allowed for a maximum of 60 days.

c. The authority having jurisdiction shall be notified in writing prior to placement of special event or public announcement signs.

d. All signs shall be on-premises only, provided that nonprofit organizations shall be allowed temporary offpremises special event signs provided that:

1.The organization must have permission from the property owner to place the sign on his property.

2.There will be a maximum of six offpremises signs advertising the nonprofit organization function.

3.Each sign may be no more than 32 square feet in area.

4.The advertised function must occur within the corporate limits of the City of Nacogdoches and be sponsored by a nonprofit organization located in the City of Nacogdoches

We seem to be gathering a collection of cute, ORANGE cats around these parts!

The Nacogdoches Humane Society recognized this and has *SPONSORED* the adoption fees for orange cats through the 31st of this month!

We'll be highlighting each of our cute orange "pumpkins" this October online, but feel free to drop by in person to visit our Orange Cat Pumpkin Patch at Nacogdoches Animal Services!
