Dan McMahon Brings Smooth Jazz to Zion Hill
As one of two local artist features this October, attendees at Zion Hill’s Jazz & Desserts event enjoyed an evening filled with music, flavor, and community. Guests sampled savory seasonal favorites, indulged in the coffee bar, and relaxed to the smooth, soulful sounds of jazz guitarist Dan McMahon. His performance filled the historic sanctuary with warmth and rhythm, making for a memorable night at Zion Hill.
Children help plant fall vegetables at Thursdays in the Garden
A big thank you to our City Gardener, Jevon, for preparing the Durst-Taylor kitchen garden for fall planting! Children had the chance to plant a variety of seasonal vegetables and label their own, so they can return to see how their plants grow in the weeks ahead.

East Texas Community Health Services and SFA are teaming up to provide a free flu shot drive-thru for everyone in the community! Check out the attached flyer for more details.
The library staff will hold another FAFSA Workshop on Thursday, October 16th at 6:45pm. FAFSA is the application students use to apply for federal aid to pay for college or qualifying vocational schools. The event is free and open to all students who will be attending college in the 2026-2027 school year. Please register on eventbrite.com.
Several volunteers and families came by to make decorations for the Día del los Muertos Festival. The Grupo de Danza Folklorico- Son de Mexico also made a beautiful altar at the library. The library is taking registration for the Type My Resume, Please! program on October 23 . On that day, library staff and volunteers will type resumes for job seekers. Public Works crews are currently clearing the leaf route in zone 11 and brush in zone 21.
Citizens can still haul their brush and bagged lawn debris for unlimited free dumps to the City Landfill located at 4602 N.W. Stallings Dr., with their City of Nacogdoches issued water bill and ID/DL showing proof of residence.
Brush & Yard Waste Pickup
• Tree limbs and brush shall be stacked on street right-of-ways, or within 3 to 6 feet of the curb or street.
o Stacks shall not exceed 6'L X 4'W X 4'H and be limited to three piles.
o The maximum diameter of the largest limb shall not exceed 12 inches in diameter.
o Brush must be stacked in front of the residence that generated the brush.
o Brush placed on vacant lots or in the streets will not be picked up.
o Limbs should not extend into the roadway. Bagged yard waste
o Bagged yard waste collection is "ONLY" available for residential addresses.
o Bagged yard waste shall be placed within ten feet of the edge of the roadway for collection. Yard waste must be properly bagged.
o The city will only collect 20 bags per residence per week.
o Bagged Yard Waste may also be disposed of at the City landfill, for no charge, provided that the:
-Resident provide current copy of water bill & drivers license as proof of residence.

Hosts National Night Out Event
The Nacogdoches Police Department joined other first responders and city staff to host a series of block parties and a main event at the C.L Simon Recreation Center in observance of National Night Out, a day meant to foster trust and a good working relationship between local law enforcement and the community.
The Nacogdoches Police Department hosted its annual retiree firearms qualifications this week. NPD has hosted this annual event for almost 20 years. A few of these retired officers started at NPD in the 70’s and 80’s. We had beautiful weather and then a great lunch together afterwards. There’s over 300 years of law enforcement experience in this group. (see photo below)

Wednesday, October 8 recreation staff attended SFA’s Wellness Fair. City staff were able to interact with SFA students and staff educating them about all the recreation opportunities the city has to offer. th
The recreation center/ library enjoyed hosting the National Night Out event on Tuesday. The event was well attended by the community.
This Sunday is the last day of regular registration for youth basketball. Late registration is available for an additional $10 from October 13-19. Boys and girls ages 5-14 can register to be a part of this winter league. Click here to register. Volunteer coaches needed!

New weather alert systems were installed at at the Clint Dempsey Soccer Complex and Nacogdoches Baseball Complex. These systems are designed to enhance safety by sounding an alert when lightning is detected within a 10-mile radius. In addition, anyone can scan the QR code on the posted weather alert signs at each location to see up to date weather information for that area. These new systems will improve our safety communication protocols
Code Enforcement
SPECIAL EVENT SIGNS THAT DON'T REQUIRE A PERMIT, BUT NOTIFICATION IS REQUIRED:
Special event or public announcement signs;
a. Such signs shall be allowed up to 14 days prior to such event, but shall be removed within two days after the scheduled event.
b. Such signs may be allowed for a maximum of 60 days.
c. The authority having jurisdiction shall be notified in writing prior to placement of special event or public announcement signs.
d. All signs shall be on-premises only, provided that nonprofit organizations shall be allowed temporary offpremises special event signs provided that:
1.The organization must have permission from the property owner to place the sign on his property.
2.There will be a maximum of six offpremises signs advertising the nonprofit organization function.
3.Each sign may be no more than 32 square feet in area.
4.The advertised function must occur within the corporate limits of the City of Nacogdoches and be sponsored by a nonprofit organization located in the City of Nacogdoches

Animal Services
The Nacogdoches Animal Shelter is pleased to announce Amanda Sowell as the new Rescue & Adoption Coordinator. Amanda began working with Animal Services in Dec. of 2020 as our Animal Services Assistant. Effective October 1, 2025 she has accepted the position as our Rescue & Adoption Coordinator. She loves interacting with and wants to promote our shelter animals in order to find their forever homes. This position was recently changed from Part-time to Full-time, and she is excited to have the opportunity to participate in community events, introduce the animals to our citizens, and expand our coordination efforts with rescues, fosters and volunteers. When she is not at the shelter she enjoys running, baking, gardening, and spending time with her husband and pets
