Nacogdoches First Responders Rally to Save Life of Nacogdoches Police Officer over Weekend
Over the weekend, an NPD officer suffered a medical emergency inside his home and was rendered unconscious. Within minutes Officer Ryan Dillon arrived and cleared the area for medical response. A responding Nacogdoches Fire & Rescue crew of John Paul Jopling, Brad Barnes and Matthew Canterberry begin immediate CPR measures and used an AED to restore normal heart rhythm.
Officer Dillon and the NFD’s quick response and medical aid likely saved the officer’s life. Later, after the officer was transferred up to Tyler for continued care, Officer Dillon stayed behind to comfort, entertain and provide care for the family’s children.
Sergeant Miles Greenberg, Sergeant Ty Birdwell and Officer Colin Stockwell all arrived on the scene as well to provide support despite being “off-duty” at the time. Sgt. Greenberg provided reassurance and comfort for the officer’s spouse and family and stepped up to serve as intermediary between the hospital staff and family as the situation progressed.
Officers Birdwell and Stockwell helped the family pack up some items and then escorted them to the hospital in Tyler, and helped assist with locating the officer at the hospital as well as securing temporary lodging in Tyler for the family as they wait for additional news. Both of these men did so on their own time and in selfless dedication to their fellow officer and the NPD community.
The actions of these four officers and the NFD crew are a testament to the values and dedication of the Nacogdoches Police and Fire Departments in their continued service to their community, the men and women serving alongside them, and the families that support them behind the scenes.
