HEADMASTER’S Message What’s New?

“Young people will still need to interact with classmates and teachers face to face.

They will still need physical activity and hands-on experience with physical objects, whether in the art room or the science lab. And given all the time that kids spend staring at screens in school and out, they will still need plenty of time to be un-networked and unplugged.”

These days the air is filled with talk about how children today are different and what they need to learn for the future. Some of the ideas are speculative, but a lot of the discussion is also quite fascinating. Concepts frequently mentioned include collaboration, creativity, initiative, flexibility, critical thinking, innovation, and problem solving.

While it is not usually obvious how to accomplish these traits, what is clear is that the ways in which most adults learned does not seem to suit today’s students very well.

Nor does it appear that traditional approaches alone teach the skills that will be expected of students in the future, as they become adults.

This Lamplighter highlights significant changes in our current educational program. These experiments give us practical experience in developing the new skills listed above. For example, the new website for the Tisch Library Media Center uses technology to make a vast array of information resources easily available anywhere. The new schedule and the advisory program reflect new insights about how students can learn more effectively. Likewise, the new Middle School GUTS program and the Ninth Grade iPad project are helping us to rethink what we expect of boys and ponder how we might accomplish it successfully.

The School’s mission statement begins with the declaration, “Allen-Stevenson’s distinctive ‘enlightened traditional’ approach educates boys to become scholars and gentlemen.” That concept of “enlightened traditional” always stands out. It suggests that we value what we have taught in the past, but want to think about it going forward.

Sometimes that means looking at new research, while other times it means making choices about how best to use the limited interval we have with the boys.

Good schools pay attention to fresh research, new technologies, changing family needs, and the influence of the culture around. This year Allen-Stevenson’s faculty is engaged in an extensive review of the School’s educational program. In light of all that can be known about educating today, we are evaluating every aspect of what we do, at every grade level and in each discipline. No doubt we will affirm much of our curriculum, but this comprehensive appraisal offers an opportunity to strengthen and align the program for even greater effect.

Further, as we plan how best to incorporate 126 East 78th Street, our new townhouse next door, into the School’s current facilities, we have the challenge to think through what’s best for the boys, as well as how those facilities should support the best learning possible. Which is exactly what our last Long Range Plan asserted as our strategy, when it declared: Our collective challenge is to prepare for the future.

As an elementary school for boys, Allen-Stevenson will continue to offer an excellent, comprehensive education to a diverse population of qualified students. As we continue to assess both our internal program and

the external environment, we will identify opportunities to strengthen the School, to meet the needs of New York City families, and to sustain an outstanding faculty.

Change comes easily to some schools, and it is more difficult for others. But the dizzying rate of change around us prompts Allen-Stevenson to be strategic in laying the foundation for each boy’s learning. Our mission statement concludes, “Ultimately, we encourage boys to move through life strongly and rightly – with confidence, knowledge, enthusiasm, resilience, and respect for all.”

What’s new? tisch liBrary meDia center laUnches a new weBsite Sarah Kresberg Library Director With the advent of information available online, librarians have found themselves in the electronic equivalent of the Wild West! The task of ensuring that information resources are reliable has now passed, to a considerable extent, from editors and publishing houses to librarians, teachers and students. Finding those sources is only half the battle, however, a precursor to the challenge of organizing them.

The School website is the natural place to corral all the databases, websites, e-books and more that we share with the community. However, our library web pages were no longer up to the task. In fact, with so many exciting new items to include we decided to discard the existing pages and to start rebuilding our web presence from scratch.

Our first change was to obtain an independent web address. You will now find us at aslibrary.net. This will help in two ways.

First, it allows users to get to the library web pages more quickly than navigating through the portal (although this is still possible). Boys frequently use our resources during classes and this will save valuable time. It will also allow the library to be accessed beyond our community and we hope it may serve as a resource for others. Being digital citizens is as much about contributing to the global online community as it is about using resources created by others. We owe a big debt of gratitude to the websites we consulted while planning our own.

New Home Page for the Tisch Library Media Center

Our new site has many more pages than our previous one. We have separate pages dedicated to e-books, audio books, films, video book trailers and information ethics.

There is a parent area that features website and app recommendations, volunteer information, tips on how to encourage your son to read, and more. ‘Choose a Book’ is the place to go for book recommendations from a range of sources. You may not have heard of ‘Livebinders’ but we link to them from our home page because these are online binders of digital resources that we curate for specific research projects, sometimes in collaboration with the boys. Speaking of research, our suite of subscription databases is always available (although password-protected), and of course our catalog is easy to find on the library home page.

We designed the homepage to be colorful and inviting. Photographs at the top feature recent scenes from the library, showing some of the work the boys are doing with the librarians. Every couple of weeks we will be showcasing a new group of books that we want to bring to the boys’ attention. A Library News section and a weekly book trailer are other home page features. We think you should be able to find any library-related information you are seeking on these redesigned web pages and hope that they serve you as a natural extension of all we have to offer in the library itself.

What’s new?

introDUcing iPaDs in the ninth graDe Excerpt from proposal by Steven Cohen Assistant Head, Upper School The Ninth Grade Class with their iPads

To fulfill the School’s technology vision for the future, this year all of a ninth grade boy’s daily organizational functioning and much of his daily personal learning will be routinely accomplished by being connected to his classmates and teachers via the Cloud through an iPad. The use of the technology has not been fully woven into the fabric of how we conduct business with students for at least two reasons: 1) students do not have anytime/anywhere access to online information, 2) the machines and connections we use at school discourage use. Carefully considering what would give the boys the right technological support, AllenStevenson decided that instead of giving the boys laptops or desktop computers, societal demand seemed to be converging on a device sized somewhere between a phone and a laptop that more naturally and seamlessly integrates with our daily lives and intuitive ways of acting. Students have also made it clear to us that they want smaller devices. Also, they, like most people, want devices that let us work with them in ways that feel natural: we want to be able to write, to turn pages, to speak. We still appreciate interacting with the physical world, even when there are digital or online analogs. Take the white boards in the Upper School hallway on which we post assignments, for example. Though all the information is available online, most students do not access it; many prefer to check the physical white boards.

Putting personal devices in the hands of ninth grade students and teachers will improve student learning and organization and cultivate habits that successful adults have. Much learning paradoxically goes on in isolation when it would be better done collaboratively but done in a group when it might better be done individually. If students and teachers all had the same device, running the same software so that they could share data easily, both in school and at home, learning could be better matched to student needs by being differentiated more efficiently as needed, and being supported by classmates’ and teachers’ support when that is needed. Further, much of students' time now is wasted not knowing what they need to do or where their resources are because the information and resources are scattered across and among websites, classrooms, lockers, backpacks, and home.

With the introduction of iPads, students will be able to do a number of things they cannot now do and do a number of things they can do now better. A small constellation of simple tools, used smartly, have the power to revolutionize the lives of students. We will begin by ensuring that this year all ninth grade teachers and students will use iPads, email, Google Calendar, Notability, Subtext, Google Docs/Drive, Dropbox and Evernote as a core set of tools. Some of these apps may change as we assess the needs and demands of the students.

To summarize, we believe that with the introduction of iPads into the Ninth Grade, the benefits and uses of such a device will be: • Having all, or most of, their texts available at all times. (A related health benefit is the substantial lightening of their backpack loads to and from school.)

• Immediate access to all handouts. (A side benefit is the reduction in paper use and copier costs, and the elimination of misplaced documents.)

• Easily read collaboratively wherever they are and provide feedback to teachers about their reading habits and understandings.

• Easily collaborate on writing assignments and projects.

• Share study aids, such as study guides and flashcard decks.

• The ability to integrate school assignments and class schedules into personal calendars that is always available and always current.

• Take class notes that are always available—tagged, organized, searchable and shareable with classmates and teachers.

• Record, video, and photograph (e.g., white boards, class presentations, lab setups, Spanish newscasts).

• Listen and watch media individually. For example, they can replay sections as needed.

• Easily fact check and research as needed during formal and informal discussions.

• Receive efficient paperless feedback. For example, this year in English they have received oral feedback on essays through sound files, which they have found more helpful than written feedback. The process has been clunky but would be much improved with iPads.

• Communicate easily with classmates and teachers.

• Display their work on the SMARTboard from their seats.

• Send their answers to questions simultaneously to the teacher in real time.

• Respond to in-class surveys.

The goal behind the establishment of the program was to ensure that each Allen-Stevenson boy knows that he has at least one person advocating for him Middle School Advisory Group

on a yearly basis. In addition, the program provides students and adults an opportunity to create a caring community that offers not only guidance and support, but also fosters citizenship.

Mission Statement: Advisory at Allen-Stevenson will inspire boys to be scholars and gentlemen, to think critically and act responsively. The program provides students and adults an opportunity to create a caring community that provides guidance and support, and fosters citizenship. Working in partnership with families and teachers, advisors will be a boy’s advocate, addressing his academic, social, emotional, and physical wellness needs, so that he will find ways to be successful and involved both inside and outside of our community.

In the Upper School there are nine advisory groups, with roughly 10 boys in each group. In the Middle School, there are five advisory groups with roughly 8 boys in each grade. Each group is led by an advisor(s) who meets with their group every day from 8:10AM to 8:30AM and for a longer period on Monday mornings. Most advisories have a daily schedule for their morning meetings.

Activities might include: Connections, Academic Dump, Current Events Discussions, Team Building, Game Day, and Student Government Updates.

One of the goals of the Upper School Program is to help the boys as they transition from the Middle School, particularly from a homeroom type system. In the Upper School, advisors work with their advisees on preparing for parent/teacher conferences. For the past few years, Upper School boys have become more involved in the conferences, so that by the spring of their Seventh Grade

year, boys are encouraged to run the conference and reflect on their experiences in school.

We discussed this issue thoroughly and concluded that while keeping the same groups together for two consecutive years would help build unity, there are three main reasons the groups should be broken up. First, students entering the School in eighth grade would find it difficult to join a group. Second, eighth grade teachers find it beneficial to work with the students that they teach. Finally, we thought it would be helpful to encourage the boys to expand their school network by getting to know different peers.

An overwhelming number of boys in both the Upper School and Middle School found advisory to be a safe haven where they could share anything on their minds. A majority of the students found the time and space valuable.

what would you say is your main goal for the Parents association this year?

Creating a more “global” feel for the PA, with cross-working committees, is my plan.

If I ask a parent, “why do you want to be involved with the PA?” the answer is usually “to meet others” or “to be a part of the community.” I want to make sure that they have that experience. what changes have you made to the Pa executive committee this year?

I decided to restructure the PA Executive Committee so that we as a group can continue to build on the PA’s ongoing efforts to create community and provide the necessary support for that to happen. Two new executive positions were added to help encourage more of a team approach within the PA. Alison Bird (mother of Connor ’15, Ryan ’18 and Dylan ‘23) is the new Committee Chairs Coordinator and Kelly Hensley (mother of James ’19 and Alexander ’22) is the new Class Representatives Coordinator. They will attend meetings for the groups that they oversee and are available to answer questions and concerns from volunteers.

Committees and Reps are going to focus more on ensuring the whole group has a chance to provide input and insight and is a part of the decision-making. how have you encouraged new groups of people to join committees within the Pa? It is important for me to have an all-inclusive community within the PA, so I wanted to encourage more fathers to become involved. I’m trying to build on efforts initiated by FASB (Fathers of AllenStevenson Boys). This year the PA has a father working on the Benefit for the first time. We continue to have a father helping

I’m sure many of you have seen me sitting in the PA Office with the School Store display behind me and the doors wide open. This is to encourage parents, teachers and staff to stop by and chat. I want to make myself available to members of the A-S Community and to show that the “PA’s doors are always open.” what type of “management” style would you say you have?

I believe that the only way for others to be 100% involved is for me to be 100% involved. I want to support my committees by being there to say, help set up the skate sale, to layout the School Store, to hang art, and to count donations.

I’ve held many PA roles in the past, from working on the Coin Drive and Mothers Day Breakfast to being a Class Rep, a library volunteer and Vice President. Having been involved in different ways, I can see how important it is for the committee members to have the PA President there to support them in their efforts. why did you want to be President?

I love being a facilitator and wanted be involved in building the AllenStevenson community. I find it extremely rewarding and fulfilling to see a community grow and to be a part of it. I want to make sure that everyone who has some involvement with the PA walks away feeling good.

A native of Detroit, Michigan, Paquita is a four-time graduate of the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and a registered CPA in the state of Michigan. She has worked as both an auditor and tax accountant for Deloitte and on the finance staff at Ford Motor Company. After completing the PhD program she joined the Department of Accountancy at the University of Notre Dame.

Currently Paquita is the Executive Director of Graduate Programs at Baruch College’s Zicklin School of Business and a KPMG National Instructor. She has published research on pensions and executive compensation in The Accounting Review, Contemporary Accounting Research, Accounting Horizons and other international accounting journals.

She is a member of the American Accounting Association and the European Accounting Association and is an associate editor of the Journal of International Accounting Research.

George is Founder, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer of Clinton Group, Inc., a registered investment advisor.

Before founding the company in 1991, he was a Vice President at Greenwich Capital Markets, Inc., a leading primary dealer and mortgage securities broker-dealer. He also directed mortgage securities trading at Citicorp Investment Bank and spent two years working as a nuclear engineer for the Tenneco Corporation.

Heather has a passion for education and wellness. She has volunteered for and sponsored a youth program called “Operation Beat the Streets” at Bethel Gospel Assembly Church in East Harlem.

This program provided a hot meal, religious instruction and athletics every Friday night for local children. Heather started a tutoring program with Sixth Graders at PS 7, in East Harlem, as well as sponsored the basketball team. In partnership with the principal at PS 7, she created a Wellness Program through which the school has earned a gold standard in Wellness and won a $4 million grant from Edible School Yards Partnership. This grant is only the second awarded in the New York City area, and PS 7 is the first showcase school in Manhattan for Edible School Yards.

Since arriving at Allen-Stevenson Paquita has been an Annual Fund Captain and has created the content for the annual Black History Month display. Paquita is an avid sports fan and volunteers her time by keeping score for Harlem Little League and Gladiator Sports Basketball tournaments.

She is also a member of the Paton Accounting Center Advisory Board at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business.

Paquita is the mother of 8-year old Evan ’20.

Throughout his career, George has taken an active role in numerous philanthropic causes, contributing significantly to health care, educational and cultural organizations. He is a member of the Board of the New York University School of Medicine Foundation, and an active member of the NYU Child Study Center. In 2002, George established The George E. Hall Childhood Diabetes Foundation.

Mr. Hall is a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

George and his wife, Lori, are parents of Kathryn, George, Jr.’18, and Charlotte.

In addition, Heather has been an active PA volunteer at Allen-Stevenson. She has been a Class Representative, Committee Chair for the Coin Drive, Mother-Son Breakfast, Book Fair, Library, served as Vice President on the executive committee last year, and this year as President.

Heather and her husband, Ali, President of Rima Investors, have two sons, Christopher ’19 and Alexander who is a ninth grader at Dwight.

Jamie recently sold his interest in Connect Infinity, a technology staffing firm he founded, and is currently the Director of Marketing for Vitis.com, a website specializing in wine sales. He graduated from Skidmore College in 1998 with a BA in history and political science.

Jamie started work in the entertainment industry, beginning as an assistant for two writers/producers and then moving on to work as an assistant to a talent manager.

After that, he founded Red Jacket Productions and produced a number of off Broadway plays, showcases and TV/film projects.

Lara is an Interventional Cardiologist at the Lenox Hill Heart and Vascular Institute. She is a founding member of The Women and Heart Disease Program at Lenox Hill Hospital.

She also serves as a Cardiology Attending for Community Outreach serving the underprivileged in Lower Manhattan.

In 2005, the early years of social networking sites, Jamie created and launched The Course Club, the first social network for golfers. As social networking interest grew, Jamie’s company Connect Infinity began to build and manage sites for other clients. Now Connect Infinity is a boutique technology-staffing firm focusing on web technology and administrative staffing for small businesses and Fortune 500 companies. After selling Connect Infinity Jamie was ready for a new challenge and joined an A-S classmate and founder of Vitis.com, an online wine business, to help him build the company.

Lara graduated from Tufts University with a BS in mathematics. She then received her MD degree at The George Washington University School of Medicine where she currently serves on the Dean’s Council. She completed an Internal Medicine Residency at Mount Sinai Hospital and then went on to complete both her Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology Fellowships at Beth Israel Hospital.

Lara and her husband, Louis Jaffe, a Managing Director at Deutsche Bank, have three children, Henry ’19, Gabe ’21 and Stella.

Jamie has been actively involved with AllenStevenson since he returned from college.

He has served as a member of the Alumni Council, and then as a vice president for two terms. He was also Vice Chair of the Alumni Annual Fund for two terms, during which time he saw participation from alumni grow from 12% to 25%.

Jamie and his wife, Danielle Axelrod, have a 1 and a half-year-old son, James.

WELCOME New Faculty & Staff DIANA AYBAR is the newest member of the Allen-Stevenson Business Office family, where she is responsible for maintenance of student accounts and account balances. Formerly from Westbury Friends School, she brings her accounting experience to A-S. Diana attended Hofstra University where she majored in Accounting. Diana enjoys quilting and woodworking in her spare time and is an avid reader.

LORENZO BELLARD joins Allen-Stevenson as a Fourth Grade Teacher. Lorenzo comes to us from Trinity School in New York City, where he has served as a First Grade Associate Teacher, a Fourth Grade Associate Teacher, a High School Basketball Coach and a Head Counselor at Trinity Day Camp. Prior to his years at Trinity, he was a Kindergarten Associate Teacher and High School Coach at Friends Seminary in New York City. Lorenzo is a graduate of City College of New York with a Masters in Education in Childhood Education and of Trinity College where he received a B.S. in Environmental Science. Outside of school he enjoys attending sporting events and comedy clubs around the city.

GENEVIEVRE BROCHE is a Third Grade Associate Teacher and works with Chris Brozyna’s class. Most recently, Genevievre was an Assistant Teacher at the Brunswick School in Greenwich, Connecticut, where she taught kindergartners and third grade students, as well as coached high school rowing for the Brunswick School Boat Club. She is a graduate of Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY, with an M.A.T. in Childhood Education, and of Connecticut College with a B.A. in Architectural Studies. When she’s not exploring her new neighborhood in Manhattan, Genevievre enjoys traveling to her home state of Minnesota where she spends most of her time lakeside with family.

JELANI DAY joined the Allen-Stevenson Physical Education Department as a part-time coach in February of 2013.

He coaches Upper School Field and Sixth Grade Lacrosse. He is a graduate of Northeastern University, where he majored in Music with concentrations in Music Business and Music Technology. After learning the game of Lacrosse as both a student at St. Bernard's and a member of the Doc's NYC Travel Team, he went on to play Varsity Lacrosse in High School, play in the Empire State Games for the New York City team, and also play for the Club team at Northeastern University. Outside of Allen-Stevenson, he freelances as an Audio Engineer, does Brand Management for his father's fashion company, and coaches for Doc's NYC Lacrosse.

MEGAN HIMEL is thrilled to be returning to Allen-Stevenson as part of the Lower School Music team this year.

Megan hails from California but has set about making New York City her home. She trained in Music Education at New York University and taught at a handful of public and charter schools throughout the city before arriving at A-S. Outside of school, Megan sings in a choir and directs another. She enjoys traveling and hiking through the California redwood forests.

ERICA PETTIS comes to Allen-Stevenson as the Director of Annual Giving. Previously she worked at Stevens Institute of Technology as a Major Gift Officer and the Pingry School as the Associate Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving. Erica attended Hamilton College where she was a double major in History and Communication in addition to playing Women's Soccer and singing in an all-female cappella group. In her spare time she enjoys running, spending time with family and friends, and exploring the city's different restaurants.

ARIES RIDDICK is a new member of the A-S Food Service staff. She was born and raised in the Bronx.

Aries is a graduate of Schenectady Community College where she majored in Hospitality Management. She is a wife and mother of four children. In her spare time she enjoys reading and playing video games.

DAVID SMITH comes to Allen-Stevenson as the Director of Development after three years in a similar role at the Calhoun School. Prior to his work at Calhoun, he served as a consultant at CCS Fundraising, where he worked with Women for Women International, Pace University, and the NAACP. At the NAACP, David launched a major gifts fundraising initiative for the 100th anniversary of the nation’s oldest civil rights organization. David's other professional experience includes teaching government and history in both the middle and upper school divisions at Friends Seminary. He has a B.A. in Government from Georgetown University and a M.A. in History from Rutgers University. In his free time, David enjoys swimming, watching baseball and attending Brooklyn Nets games at the Barclays Center.

GRACE SUR joins Allen-Stevenson as a Lower and Middle School Associate Teacher. Grace was most recently at The Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn, New York, where she served for four years as a Fourth Grade Head Teacher, and earlier for three years as an Assistant Teacher for the Third and Fourth Grades. In between those two teaching assignments, she taught Sixth Grade Humanities at the Senator Robert F. Wagner Middle School #167 in New York City. She received an M.A. in Elementary Education from Teachers College, and a B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies from Cornell University, College of Human Ecology. She has been involved with ArtWorks for Youth for the past seven years and has traveled to Port Elizabeth, South Africa to teach reading, math, and knitting.

MARISSA ZACKOWITZ is new to Allen-Stevenson this school year and will be teaching Second Grade on Fridays. She has extensive Head Teaching experience. Most recently she taught Grade 3 at The Spence School where she also worked in admissions. Prior to that she taught at The Birch Wathen Lenox School for six years, The Dalton School for two years and P.S. 76 for one year. She is a graduate of Bank Street College where she earned a Master of Science in Education and The University of Vermont where she received a Bachelor of Arts majoring in English and minoring in Studio Art. An exercise enthusiast, having completed three marathons, and avid photographer, Marissa is a native New Yorker and is proud to live with her husband and raise their children and dog in the greatest city in the world.

In the classroom Performing Macbeth Susan Lukas’s Eighth Grade English class studied Macbeth from a different angle this fall. In order to prepare for the Upper School Shakespeare play in November, Ms. Lukas wanted to incorporate into her Shakespeare study a way to help the boys gain some acting practice as well as learn how to be a good audience. Ms. Lukas chose a variety of scenes from Macbeth and asked the boys to work in groups of their choosing to create one of these scenes for an in-class presentation.

Together, the group had to figure out what the language in the scene meant. They could go online and watch different versions of their scene to help give them insight. Working closely together and supporting each other in their roles, the boys developed their characters and thought carefully about the staging.

Each group had the opportunity for a practice run-through after which they received compliments and constructive feedback from the class.

Incorporating these comments, the final performances followed over the next day or two. As a last step, students were required to evaluate fellow group members. The evaluations were based on preparedness, focus during practice, helpfulness to the group, and performance. This experience has certainly created a lot of excitement for the play in November!

Dane atkinson ’89 sPeaks at FoUnDers Day Founders Day is an occasion at which Allen-Stevenson honors its founders, Francis Bellows Allen and Robert Alston Stevenson, with an all-school celebration on the Friday before the Columbus Day weekend. Different grades are paired together to work on projects and take part in the festivities that celebrate the School’s birthday.

A guest speaker, an alumnus or a former member of the faculty, tells of his relationship with Allen-Stevenson years ago. This year we were fortunate to have as our speaker, Dane Atkinson '89.

Dane started his first company, SenseNet Inc., at the age of 18.

SenseNet is a web services company that migrated into internet software. The company grew explosively through servicing Fortune 500 companies (WPP, Pfizer, Lucent) to hundreds of employees on three continents. Since then, he’s had an extremely successful career as a technology executive and has founded, bought, and sold over a dozen companies including yourday.com, yourstuff.com, estandardsforum.com, and iensure.com.

Yourday.com was funded, developed, brought to market and sold to Deltathree in an eight-figure deal in under six months. Mr. 24

Atkinson co-founded For Your Imagination, Inc. and serves as its Director. Prior to his latest venture as CEO of SumAll, Dane served as an Advisor of Squarespace, Inc., and served as its Chief Executive Officer. He has managed his own investment fund to handle positions in the mobile, internet and gaming sectors.

Dane is addicted to learning skills like scuba diving, Wadu Ryu, flying planes, and jewelry making, and said it was a “shocking honor” to be able to return to A-S as the Founders Day speaker.

During his talk to the boys on October 11, Dane referred to his experience at Allen-Stevenson as one that felt like “training on a heavy world,” because the School taught him how to be strong, right, moral and brave. He told the boys about his experiences as a student, struggling with dyslexia and what he referred to as spastic energy, and the fact that he was missing a few fingers on one hand.

His teachers, despite the challenges he faced, didn’t treat him differently. Instead, they inspired and empowered him to figure things out, to be brave, and to feel great about being different. He says the best lesson he learned while at A-S was the whole idea of Fortiter et Recte – being strong, right, and moral. He said, “I love this School. This School is literally the best place in the world.”

Dane spoke of his classmates as the guys who would always do right. In high school, at parties, the A-S boys would be the ones to make sure the girls got home safely. They would face the opposition, and defend each other – not always an easy thing to do. He talked of Mr. Kersey as his role model, “a force of nature that taught me you could be spastic and energetic and still change the world.”

In closing, Dane encouraged the boys to “be strong, be right, be brave… be Fortiter et Recte.” He went on to answer questions from the boys. Questions ranged from the intricate details of the scuba rescue, to his favorite company, and his memories of A-S. Dane addressed all the questions with kindness and a genuine excitement about being back at his alma mater.

He went on to thank his former teachers for helping him, saying that each of them made him stronger, allowed him to be brave, allowed him to be right. He advised the boys to take each of those things as a challenge.

After leaving A-S, one of the many jobs Dane took on was as a scuba instructor. He hoped the position would give him an opportunity to improve his public speaking skills. He shared a story with the boys about taking a scuba class 30 miles out from shore at Sheepshead Bay, strapping the students to an anchor line, tying them to a mast, only to find the entire mast break off and drift away. Instead of panicking, Dane said his time at A-S, of overcoming challenges, or being strong and brave, came back to him in that moment, and helped him overcome the problem at hand.

A DAY OF VOLUNTEERING

by Erik Resurreccion Six members of the A-S faculty spent a day volunteering with Friends of Rockaway.

After checking in with headquarters, Venesha Cashdollar, Mary Leonard, Jesse Montero, Jenn Zimmermann, John Zufall, and Erik Resurreccion worked hard putting up drywall, taping, "mudding" and sanding at 70 Hillside Avenue in the Roxbury neighborhood of the Rockaways. Dolores, the owner of the house, is 82 and it was amazing to hear her story. She was wonderful and we were so glad we had a chance to meet and talk with her. It made our work seem all the more worthwhile. And our crew chief, Joe, was the kindest, most patient teacher.

The toughest part of the day was that we couldn't finish the work at Dolores' house, as it was so close to being done. Just when we felt we knew what we were doing and could work a little faster, our time was coming to an end. In fact, we stayed almost an hour longer just to finish one section of wall in the kitchen. We hope more members of the A-S family will have the chance to share this kind of experience in the future.

SETTING OUT ON UNSAFE WATERS IN PURSUIT OF IMPOSSIBLE GOALS Closing Exercises Address by Jonathan J. Bush, Jr. ’84 The 2013 Upper School Closing Exercises were, in true Allen-Stevenson tradition, a memorable and heartfelt occasion. With 40 boys graduating, about to embark on new educational and life adventures that would build on the foundation they acquired at A-S, it was a very special treat to hear from Jonathan J. Bush, Jr. ’84 who gave the keynote address.

Jonathan J. Bush, Jr. ’84 is the co-founder of athenahealth, a women’s health practice management company. Today, athenahealth is pursuing a vision to build an information infrastructure that makes health care work as it should. It has become a leading provider of cloud-based business services to U.S. medical groups. The Boston Business Journal recently recognized athenahealth as one of the top 20 “Best Places to Work,” and the company was ranked 4th in the Forbes Fast Tech 25, a list of America’s 25 fastest-growing tech companies.

Prior to founding athenahealth, Mr. Bush served as an EMT for the City of New Orleans, was trained as a medic in the U.S. Army, and worked as a management consultant with Booz Allen & Hamilton. Mr. Bush obtained a Bachelor of Arts in the College of Social Studies from Wesleyan University and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

Mr. Bush, an alumnus of the Class of 1984, regaled the crowd with tales from his time at A-S. He spoke, sometimes jestfully, of the trials and tribulations he faced as a young boy on East 78th Street. He stressed the uniqueness of Allen-Stevenson’s ability to provide fellowship and options for every boy, saying, “Nobody seemed to be politically correct to me. In fact, weaknesses got accentuated and talked about rather than glossed over -and I had many -- but everyone at this school was in fellowship with me, just as I was.”

He went on to say that the ability to accept failure, as he learned during his time at A-S, has shaped how he approaches his life as a businessman and entrepreneur. At athenahealth, a womens’ health practice management company that Bush co-founded in 1997, he says, “We love failure. We don’t protect from failure, we invite it, notice it, and then look for options.” In fact, he explained, athenahealth has transformed itself into a leading provider of cloud-based business services in the medical field, because of this ability to accept failure and adapt.

Bush’s excitement for life, for continuous learning and for future possibilities was evident in his remarks to the boys. He closed by saying, “Now that I’m 30 years out of school, what I love most is setting out on unsafe waters in pursuit of impossible goals in fellowship with people I love. And I had that first here. My charge to you men is to hold that somewhere, and hang on to it with all you are. I wouldn’t try to recreate it, because it will never be quite so pure and real as it is right now, and if you have it inside you can whip it out and use it anytime you want, in any circumstance.”

David Waterman ’13 Closing Exercises Speaker to realize that everyday, I and we, have the opportunity to present to the world not only who we are, but who we want to be.

I know I can speak for all of the graduates today and say that we have had some great times at Allen-Stevenson. But, we have also overcome many obstacles to get to where we are today. First, there is Kim Sklow.

I knew Kim before I came to Allen-Stevenson because she was the head of the girls’ side of the camp I attended. I thought I had it made, because I knew how fun and nice Kim was. Then my first day of Seventh Grade came, and I met her alter ego, Ms. Sklow.

Good morning parents, teachers, fellow graduates, and students. It’s such an honor to be here today and to have been chosen as the graduation speaker.

Although I have only been here since Sixth Grade, I feel like I have been part of this community since Kindergarten, and that is a testament to the boys and the teachers here, who welcomed me and made me feel so comfortable. Many A-S boys apply out in Eighth Grade, but I didn’t. I decided to stay at Allen-Stevenson and it was the best decision I have ever made.

Ask any boy in our Ninth Grade class, and they will say this was their most amazing year yet at A-S. It was a year of growth, self-realization, maturity, and without a doubt, the year where I learned the most.

In Mr. Cohen’s English class, we not only READ the Bible, we dissected it as a work of literature, engaged in heated debates, challenged each other’s beliefs, and all had the benefit of walking away as better people because of it. This year in English, we were encouraged to not only write creatively, but to edit our work to make our words most effective. We didn't just learn vocabulary words for the SSAT and ISEE, we were taught new words to enhance the way we communicate. Math was not about learning theorems to do well on a test, but to learn how to think more logically and efficiently to help us tackle all sorts of complex equations in the future.

In the third trimester, English and History became a joined course of study, when the Ninth Grade was lucky enough to embark on the journey that we call, “Facing History and Ourselves.” In investigating the events that led up to the Holocaust and other examples of genocide and mass violence, we were asked to examine human behaviors and explore racism, discrimination, citizenship, and civic responsibility.

It was only when I sat down to write this speech did I realize that this curriculum was basically an extension of Allen-Stevenson’s mission, to encourage boys to move thru life strongly and rightly, with confidence, knowledge and enthusiasm, and to be responsible citizens. This is exactly what Allen-Stevenson has been grooming us to be since the first time we entered the doors.

The study of Facing History forged an incredible bond between all of the boys and our English, History, and Art teachers. Honestly assessing your own moral and ethical decisions and confronting your truth is extremely difficult when it is not behavior you are proud of. Add to that, presenting your project it in front of your classmates and every teacher in the school, you have a really powerful lesson in public speaking!

My Facing History project marked a huge turning point in my own life. I am not the same kid I was last year, and I owe that to Allen-Stevenson. In facing ethical problems that teens face, I was forced to look hard at who I am, and 28

Things only got harder in my Eighth Grade year when her twin sister, Senorita Spielberg became my Spanish teacher. Even though Ms. Sklow and Senorita Spielberg are tough, I know I can speak for all of the boys in saying that wherever you go, you will never feel as supported as you do knowing they are in your corner. And, in talking about obstacles, and obstacle courses, please don't get me started on Indian Mountain.

Let’s just say, it’s not the name of an amusement park.

Then there is Ms. Barnes. Before Ninth Grade, we knew Ms. Barnes as the quiet, easy-going librarian, who wouldn’t even get mad if you had 10 overdue books. But this year, as our history teacher, Ms. Barnes became the tough talking, “B is an excellent grade” giving extraordinaire, who must be the largest shareholder in the Noodletools Corporation, because each A-S boy has logged more hours on the site than any other boy in the City.

And Ms. Colebank . . . Harvard called, they want their curriculum.

And Mr. Rodriguez, you had me at “hola” And then there’s Mr. Herschenhous. Who doesn’t love him?

There’s nothing you can do wrong in Science as long as you don't talk in his class. Right, Pablo?

But Allen-Stevenson isn’t just all about work. There are so many extra curricular activities that offer every boy the opportunity to become the Renaissance man Allen-Stevenson enables him to be. We are competitive in all sports, including roof soccer. The chorus, as you heard, is top rate, thanks to Ms. Demko. Mr. Schrade’s orchestra went to the Haverford School and performed to rave reviews. Mr. Kersey’s Mikado was unbelievable, And by the way Duncan, I think you’re Broadway bound.

I want to take the time now to congratulate all of my fellow graduates and to offer tremendous thanks to Mr. Trower and ALL of our teachers.

You have all succeeded.

Allen-Stevenson has inspired us to become scholars and gentlemen.

We are: thoughtful, responsible, generous, respectful, studious, enthusiastic, determined, creative, and good boys.

I have a twin sister, and although my parents reinforce to us BOTH all of those things every day, as a boy, I think it’s taken a little longer to actually get it. But because of you Allen-Stevenson, I got it, we all get it, and we won’t ever forget it.

Faculty Grants The Kellner Great Teacher Award was initiated by a gift from George and Bicky Kellner, parents of Peter ’84. The Kellner Great Teacher Award recognizes outstanding achievement by an Allen-Stevenson teacher. The 2013 recipient is First Grade Teacher, Erik Resurreccion.

I often feel that I am far from being the kind of teacher I aspire to be, so when I was recognized for this honor, I was thrilled and humbled. Dear Alumni, With the 2013–2014 school year underway and the Scholars and Gentleman back at it, I can only reminisce from my desk how great it was to be a student at Allen–Stevenson. What’s harder for me to stomach is that I have been an Alumnus for 22 years. I spent 9 wonderful years at A-S, far more than at any other institution, and I honestly believe, as I am sure most of you do, that A-S played a huge role in who I am today as a person, a citizen, a parent, you name it. I have always felt a great affection for Allen–Stevenson and it’s because of that I am so honored to lead the Alumni Council.

Allen-Stevenson has and always will be a warm, secure, and inviting community for its students and Alumni. But I fear the farther we get from our time at A-S the more we forget that we are still part of the Allen-Stevenson community. The Alumni Council is eager to change that perspective. Whether you are Class of 1941 or 2013, whether you give a dollar or ten thousand, it doesn’t matter, we all share a common bond as Scholars and Gentlemen.

The Executive Committee, Colin McCabe ’90, Christopher Persley ’88, Tom Zipser ’99, Andrew Arias ’92 and Kerim Eken ’00, as well as the other members of the ASAC have been working tirelessly on behalf of the Alumni. It’s with their help we are able to continue our professional networking opportunities, engage our young alumni, and have events created by Alumni for Alumni.

As Alumni we are a community over 2000 strong, and growing each year. As we continue our efforts to bring Alumni together we also hope that you will help support the future Alumni soon to join our ranks. In the coming weeks you will probably hear from your class rep in one form or another since we are starting our Annual Fund initiative early. We are a proud group, and as such we should show it. Our Alumni participation fell to 23% last year and lags behind schools with “uckly” in their name. Allen-Stevenson needs your support, big or small that’s up to you; participation is what matters.

I want you to know you can come to the School, or to our Alumni body as you would at any college, university, or high school. We as a community are here to help one another. I welcome any ideas or suggestions you might have, and look forward to working with you over the course of my term as President.

alumni EVENTS DUCK, DODGE, DIP, DIVE…DODGEBALL 2013!

Members of classes 1992-2013 returned to Allen-Stevenson on May 23 to dive, dodge, dip, dive and… dodge in what turned out to be a wild and rowdy game of dodgeball officiated by Coach Jaison Spain ’97, who also serves as A-S’s resident DJ. Alumni indulged in pizza, beer, and soda in between matches and enjoyed catching up with old classmates… when they weren’t pelting balls at each other. All agreed it was the perfect way to kick off their Memorial Day weekend.

BACK TO 78TH STREET: A PARTY FOR THE CLASS OF 2010 On Monday, June 10, the A-S Class of 2010 returned to the School for an evening of fun with friends, family and former teachers. The class enjoyed reconnecting over Ms. Matthew's A-S fare, and parents of the class enjoyed catching up with each other and the School.

NEW ALUMNI BREAKFAST

June 12 marked the day the Allen-Stevenson Alumni Council welcomed the newest members of the Allen-Stevenson Alumni Association. The Classes of 2013 and 2014 were honored at the New Alumni Breakfast prior to Closing Exercises.

The breakfast is an annual tradition during which the graduates enjoy a special breakfast, and receive their official A-S Alumni Pin from current members of the Alumni Council.

David Kersey h’98 reminded the boys of the importance of staying connected with Allen-Stevenson, explaining that A-S would one day look to them to help support future generations of students at the School. alumni EVENTS A FAMILY GATHERING IN SAN FRANCISCO On Saturday, April 6, a group of Allen-Stevenson alumni gathered in the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco to catch up with their alma mater. Doug Foster ’89 and his wife, Rebecca, opened their home for the opportunity to reconnect with friends from A-S. David Kersey h’98 and Anthony Kapp made the trip from New York to attend the gathering. A collection of yearbook photos that Doug presented sparked great conversation about favorite teachers and fond memories on East 78th Street, and all look forward to the next gathering.

ROOFTOP GATHERING IN WASHINGTON, D.C. Mr. Kersey traveled to our nation's capital for a gathering of Allen-Stevenson alumni on May 13. The event took place on the rooftop of The Watergate, where Stewart Fried ’83 occupies an office at OFW Law. Stewart and his classmate, Steve Wydler ’83, hosted the gathering with the gracious help of their wives.

WINE TASTING WITH NIGHTINGALE ALUMNAE

On May 21, fifty alumni from Allen-Stevenson and Nightingale-Bamford gathered on East 92nd Street for a Wine Tasting hosted by Mike Grady ’91. Mike is the founder of VITIS, the online wine retailer who graciously supplied the wine for this first joint event between A-S and NBS. Christy Canterbury, Master of Wine and Certified Sommelier at VITIS, facilitated the evening, giving a broad overview of the wines and encouraging the participants to look, taste and smell their way through the subtleties of each vintage.

Pleasant, SC, and is retired after being a group vice president at Wyeth and president of international at Alberto Culver. He is spending the year in Nice, France, where his two youngest boys are in high school. He has four older children in the United States.

nicholas kotsonis ’81 (nkotsonis@aol.com) writes to let his classmates know that he hopes to hear from them, noting that he hasn’t had a chance to get in touch… “lone wolf thing and all.” He reports having to shut down the health club last year, and has renewed his focus on real estate interests.

Artemis visited Allen-Stevenson on April 24, and shared a screening of his film, “Two Who Dared: The Sharps’ War” with the faculty and Upper School boys. The film tells the story of his grandparents’ life-changing journey. tim nichols h’78 and David kersey h’98 attended a memorial celebration for Ned Hayes ’70 at the Yacht Club in Blue Hill, ME, over the summer. They were among more than 200 friends and family. Mr. Nichols spoke eloquently about Ned and his time at Allen-Stevenson in the late 1960s. He impressed people with his talk of the "little school on East 78th Street."

1980s erik cliette ’81 (cliette06@yahoo.com) has spent the past year working with a group of teenage filmmakers in New York. Their film “Triggering Wounds” recently won Best Youth Documentary at the TriBeca Film Festival. The film is Harlem Hospital’s Circle of Safety antigun violence and hard reduction film.

marc rice ’84 (marc.rice@opco.com) enjoyed a visit from his classmates rabbi tsvi landau ’84 and John goldstone ’84 over the summer. Tsvi was in New York visiting his mother from Israel and taking his eldest daughter to sleep away camp, and John was in town visiting from LA.

by Dewey wigod ’77 it was great to be back at allen-stevenson to watch a long journey come full circle. artemis Joukowsky ’77, whom i first met at a-s as a fellow member of the class of 1977, was given an assignment in the ninth grade to interview a family member who showed moral courage. what a tough assignment. how many of us – whether as kids or as adults – have a chance to show moral courage? By confessing to having pocketed the dollar bills left on tables and on the floors of closets around the house so that the cleaning lady would not be accused of theft? By sticking up for someone whom the other guys have been picking on at the risk of losing popularity? who takes risks? well, i think my grandfather took part in a march for civil rights in the 1960s, but it took place in new york city, not in mississippi.

Bill Konigsberg ’86 (bkonigsberg@gmail.com) has a new book out.

It is titled Openly Straight, and is the follow-up to the Lambda Literary Award-winning Out of the Pocket. Bill writes, “I'm so excited to share this book with the world. Pre-publication buzz has been overwhelmingly positive. USA Today ranked it No. 3 on their Top 10 list of must-read teen summer books, and it made the Summer 2013 Kids' Indie Next list.

Reviewers have been effusive in praising the novel.” The book launch party will take place on Thursday, June 6, in Phoenix.

chiqui matthew ’93 (chiqmatt@gmail.com) and his wife, Amy, welcomed Nile Rose Matthew into the world on Thursday, March 28, at 4:27AM. Both mama and baby girl are happy and healthy.

in memoriam Peter merritt schoff ’52 died March 13, 2013, in London at the age of 75. He was formerly of Greenwich, CT, and Stowe, VT. After attending Allen-Stevenson, he graduated from Deerfield Academy in 1955 and from Trinity College in 1959, where he was a member of St. Anthony Hall. He worked for the New York Times in financial advertising sales from 1960 to 1969, then moved on to Forbes Magazine where he was the New York manager until 1982 when he moved to London to set up the overseas office. He retired after 30 years as VP/International Advertising Director.

As a young boy Peter spent his summers with his family on the Elmore Mountain Road. He was a golfer and a tennis player, but his lifelong passion was fly-fishing, which he learned on the Lamoille County streams with his father James S. Schoff and his brother Jim. He is survived by his wife, Sam; his former wife, Abigail Schoff; his daughter Hilary Douwes and her husband William; his son Peter M. Schoff, Jr. and his wife Katherine; his brother Jim Schoff ’48 and his wife Joanna of Morrisville; and four grandsons, Alexander and Andrew Douwes, Peter III and Henry Schoff.

Dr. Edward Barbour ‘Ned’ Hayes ’70 of Brooklin, ME, and Barcelona, Spain, a lover of music, the ocean, the outdoors, life, died of a heart attack at the age of 57 on Thursday, May 9, in Barcelona.

Dr. Hayes was born in Mexico City, Mexico. He grew up in Mexico, Iraq, Switzerland, Colombia and the United States. He was a graduate of Allen-Stevenson, Phillips Academy Andover, and Bowdoin College, where he helped start the Saltwater College, a series of events designed to heighten the awareness of the ocean, encourage use of the sea in various disciplines, and to stimulate interest in the marine environment. He went on to Tufts Medical School and then did his residency in pediatrics at Maine Medical Hospital in Portland, Maine. He then joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an epidemiologist in Atlanta, Georgia, and in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

He married Paz Vidal-Quadras of Barcelona, Spain, who accompanied him to The Republic Of The Marshall Islands in the Central Pacific for a year of adventure delivering preventive health care to isolated atolls on the square rigged sailing ship the Tole Mour. They returned to the United States where Ned continued his work with the Center For Disease Control and Prevention first in Atlanta, then at the Maine Bureau of Health in Augusta. His work with the CDC took him wherever communicable disease outbreaks occurred. Ned spent his last 11 years with CDC at the Division of Vector Borne Infectious Diseases in Fort Collins, CO.

matthew russo ’10 (matthew_d_russo@horacemann.org) ended his wrestling season with his second private school state championship title. He finished top 12 in the National Prep tournament as well. He took second at Mayors and finished the season with a record of 47-3. He’s hoping to wrestle in college next year, possibly at Cornell or Northwestern.

After twenty years with the CDC he moved with his family to Barcelona. Fluent in Spanish, he joined the Barcelona Center for International Health Research (CRESIB) where he became the head of The Department Of Public Health and President of the CRESIB Internal Scientific Committee. He advised projects developed at ISGlobal's platform in Morocco. He was Co-Director of the I.S. Global University of Barcelona Master Of Global Health program and was deeply involved with teaching international courses. He was an expert advisor for the public health services of Catalunya on surveillance and control of vector-borne diseases.

He is survived by his wife, Paz Vidal-Quadras, his daughters Carolina and Clara, his son Lucas, his mother Mrs. Guy Scull Hayes (Dottie), his sisters Lucie Semler, Anna Hayes, Priscilla Taylor, his brothers Dr. Guy H. Hayes and Dr. Bartlett H. Hayes, numerable nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. He will be remembered for his curiosity, dedication, humor, and compassion. He will be greatly missed.

laurence smith ’00 passed away on August 13 while doing something he loved… playing basketball. Kim Kyte, Head of the Middle School who worked closely with Laurence at the Trinity Day Camp, beautifully summarizes the impact Laurence had on the A-S community: "As we all know Laurence had a kind word for everyone, a smile that could make even the worst day seem better and a love of children that we saw each and every day at day camp. In my mind's eye I see Laurence standing in line to sign in each morning at TDC munching a piece of fruit and chatting with his colleagues, dancing with his campers during our last TDC event and encouraging his campers during our Biathlon. What a wonderful man." Laurence will be fondly remembered by all of us in the Allen-Stevenson community. He is survived by his brothers, Denton A. Smith ’94, Victor L. Smith, Jr. ’88, and his parents Victor L. Smith, Sr. and Teckla Smith.

With the support of the faculty, the first A-Z Files publication highlights the best creative writing by students in grades 6-9. The Class of 2000 embarked on a fundraising campaign to fund this tribute in Zach's memory, and raised over $15,000. For New York Fashion Week, Jaison Spain ’97, Landis Assembly Hall Manager, was chosen to model for a well-known international clothing line called “Sabit,” based out of Japan. Food and Nutrition Director Monica Matthew, was part of the Caribbean Authors Literary Festival in Brooklyn in June. Monica showcased her Antiguan and Barbudan culture by reading from her published book, Journeycakes: memories with my antiguan mama. Monica has just completed a screenplay called Fungee, Salt-fish and Chat, which will be directed and produced by Hama Films Productions in Antigua. She is also working on a book/screenplay about her father.
