E. William Judson

E. William Judson’s contributions to Allen-Stevenson are many. Our newly transformed schoolhouse complex is due in large part to his tenacity, foresight and strong sense of family. The building, that for many years was a dream, is now a reality as a result of a progression of events which began in 1980 when Bill Judson joined the Board of Trustees.

Almost immediately upon becoming a Trustee, Mr. Judson became Chair of the Building Committee. Over the course of the next 25 years, he orchestrated numerous construction projects beginning with the acquisition and construction of the Ballard building. His powers of persuasion were formidable and he used them to convince the Board to purchase the facility for a whopping $225,000! The next challenge was to create faculty housing by totally renovating the Berger Building on 77th Street. After that was the construction of the Kindergarten and the enlargement of the cafeteria at the rear of the Monroe Building, which brought with it significant legal objections from the “Save our Gardens ” group. Mr. Judson

successfully led the School to meet this legal challenge with gusto. In 1992, he organized the addition of three floors to the Ballard Building and the construction of the Upper Gym over the 77th Street buildings, giving the School an unmatched physical education facility.

For all of these projects, Mr. Judson volunteered countless hours to work with numerous architects and contractors, orchestrated the bidding and approvals processes, and managed neighborhood issues over the years. This took a mixture of tenacity, patience and creativity!

The renovation of the public spaces of the School followed, providing an upgrade to the stairwells and moving the School entrance to the West side of the 78th Street Building. The total renovation of the Monroe Building followed with the addition of two stories and the enlargement of the building over the kindergarten. This project was again the focus of several lawsuits from our neighbors that were decided in the School’s favor. This renovation was essential in order to execute the final project which in turn was made possible by an approval from the Landmarks Commission. The Monroe building, serving as “swing space”, made the complete reconfiguration of the School possible without the necessity of vacating the School during the project. The final result is our totally new and enlarged facility which opened in September.

He is also the consummate AllenStevenson father: five of his sons attended Allen-Stevenson: Stephen ’76, William ’78, Peter ’80, Alexander ’86 and Ian ’93. A sixth son, Nicholas, attended St. Bernard’s.

As he says, “It was a labor of love over 25 years. There was a momentum that took on a life of its own ”. We are grateful for this momentum – which clearly came from this talented and dedicated man who was honored at the School’s Building Dedication on November 2nd. Ronald Rolfe ’60, President of the Board of Trustees, presented him with a frame inscribed: “To E. William Judson with the gratitude of the Board for making the new Allen-Stevenson possible”.

The basic building block in any good school is the interpersonal one. As we have moved into our stunning new facilities this fall, after an arduous construction period, I find myself reaffirming the view that schools are people, not buildings.

That’s what this issue of the Lamplighter is meant to demonstrate: how the new building serves people, especially the boys and the faculty, in fulfilling Allen-Stevenson’s educational mission.

By this reminder I always mean to emphasize that the quality of life in school has to do with relationships between students and faculty, teachers and their colleagues, boys and their classmates, and all of us here at Allen-Stevenson with the broader school community — parents, alumni, trustees, neighbors, and so on. I usually add that our new building is meant to support what people do. Obviously, we are thrilled that Allen-Stevenson now has unrivaled facilities that match the wonderful educational job we do with boys.

More broadly speaking, however, I believe the mission of every elementary school is fundamental, arguably the most important period of education in a person’s whole life. With curiosity and confidence intact, the learner is unstoppable! If we get it right in the beginning, a student is well served for every time of learning that follows, whether high school, college, graduate/professional school, or adulthood.

Recently, I had the chance to affirm this conviction with others who do comparable work in Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. As President of the Elementary School Heads Association (ESHA) in the United States, I traveled to Edinburgh, Scotland, for an unprecedented joint meeting with the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools (IAPS), our British counterpart organization. It was simply great to be able to affirm this with others, including some 85 from North America. Here’s part of what I wrote for the introduction to the conference program:

Elementary and primary schools lay foundations for all good learning right through life. We teach skills and attitudes that can serve students throughout their schooling, and we empower curiosity and creativity, developing confident learners who always want to know about the world around them. We train children to accept responsibility within a community, to serve others beyond themselves, and to become productive, thoughtful leaders. We help them to see the world as a connected whole, not simply as a series of separate disciplines, and we even think of them in terms of wholeness and individuality. We believe that good learning can be fun, not just serious, and that it is a process, not just a product or credential. When we succeed, a student becomes a lifelong learner, as well as an engaged participant in the crying needs of today’s world.

This trip to Britain was exhilarating and interesting, a professional opportunity I will never forget. On behalf of all ESHA members across the country, I had to give a speech to some 600 people, mostly heads of school.

That was actually quite scary, rather like when your friends from school meet your friends from camp!

What I talked about was children and the crucial role of schools to create order in a chaotic, uncertain world, a message that was warmly received after all my trepidation.

In addition, my wife Carol and I had the honor to meet Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, who was one of the conference speakers, and for the first time ever I wore a kilt for a spectacular formal banquet of ESHA and IAPS at the Royal Museum in Edinburgh. All that was lots of fun, too.

After Edinburgh we went on to London, where we had a fantastic Allen-Stevenson dinner with great attendance and affection shown for the School. What a privilege it is to serve Allen-Stevenson in these amazing days!

AROUND A-S AN AWESOME SUMMER AT A?S

9TH GRADE FIELDTRIP INDIAN MOUNTAIN

Imagine spending twenty-eight days laughing, smiling, and having tons of fun with your best friends from AllenStevenson. If you can imagine that, then you understand the type of camp experience our boys had this past summer at A-S’s Awesome Summer Camp.

The boys spent their mornings playing in Central Park, creating art projects, singing and acting, and deciding whose Lego spacecraft was the best and strongest. Afternoons were spent playing games in the gym and cooling off in the pool. It truly was a magical summer for everyone and every Allen-Stevenson boy would enjoy the opportunity to be a part of the fun.

THE FIRST ANNUAL FATHER-SON KINDERSCOUTS CAMP-OUT On Saturday and Sunday, June 4-5, 2005 at the Lake Taghkonic State Park, twenty-two Kindergarteners and their Tenderfoot Dads gathered for some end-of-the-year bonding in the great outdoors.

Prepared with sleeping bags, tents, flashlights and compasses, the boys learned some camping basics, safety and skills such as how to select a campsite, how to pitch a tent, and how to build two kinds of campfires.

Some additional activities included: a treasure hunt, campfire stories, songs and s’mores, knot tying trophies, and an alumni tribal council where the boys were given special tribal council names. They hiked, frolicked in the lake and visited the nature center. One big highlight was a surprise visit from David Trower!

KinderScouts was the brainchild of first grader, Max Watson, and organized independently of Allen-Stevenson by parents, Peg and Rob Watson and Jean and Alex Gellert ’79.

On September 19th-21st, the Ninth Graders went to the Indian Mountain Adventure ropes course, located on the grounds of the Indian Mountain School in Lakeville, CT. The trip began back at school where the boys planned their menu for their time in the woods.

They shopped for groceries on the way to the course.

Then for three days the boys participated in a series of individual and group challenges on both low and high elements. They had to solve problems, overcome fears, learn to trust each other, and work as a group. At night they talked and went stargazing on night walks. The boys cooked out, made pasta, and ate lots of cold cuts and chips.

On the final day of the trip, each boy challenged himself on the high ropes, a series of cables and challenges strung 25 feet up off the ground, which ended with a blazing ride on the zip line.

Susan de Menil Susan de Menil is an author and art historian whose primary focus is modern and contemporary architecture and the built environment. Most recently, she was the co-editor of the book, Sanctuary: The Spirit In/Of Architecture. The book documents presentations made by prominent architects and curators at a public program organized by Ms. de Menil and held in Houston, Texas in conjunction with the exhibition at The Menil Collection museum, Sanctuaries: The Last Works of John Hejduk.

In 1992, Ms. de Menil co-curated Angels & Franciscans: Innovative Architecture from Los Angeles and San Francisco, which was judged best architecture show for 1992-1993 by the International Association of Art Critics, and was the subject of a book published by Rizzoli that she co-authored. She is a Founding Member and Trustee of Soundings: The John Hejduk Foundation for Architectural Research at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design; President of the Board of Trustees of the Byzantine Fresco Foundation, Houston, which operates the award-winning Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum in Houston, Texas; and a member of the President’s Counsel at the Cooper Union, New York City. She has previously served as a Trustee of both The Architecture League of New York and The Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum where she participated in long range planning and exhibitions.

Since 1991, Ms. de Menil has directed marketing, administration and interior design for her husband’s firm, Francois deMenil Architect, P.C. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Barnard College in 1980, and a Master of Science degree from the Columbia University School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation in 1989. She is the mother of daughter Sophie at Brearley, and two sons, John at New York University and Conrad who is a third grader at Allen-Stevenson.

Paul Leff Paul co-founded Perry Capital in 1988 and is the Chief Investment Officer. He was a principal of Harvard Management, where he was a portfolio manager from 1986 until 1988.

From 1984 to 1986, Paul was a trader and research analyst at Kayne, Anderson and Co., where he specialized in corporate reorganizations. Paul is also a member of the Dean's Advisory Board at the School of Business at the University of Wisconsin and is the Scholarship Chairman of the Wisconsin Eastern Alumni Scholarship Fund, an organization providing academic scholarships to minority, disadvantaged students from New York City.

He earned an MS in Finance in 1984, and a BBA in Finance and Economics in 1983 at the University of Wisconsin.

Paul and his wife Julie have two boys at Allen-Stevenson. Ethan is a 4th grader and is working on making his own tie-knots and Scott is a recently toothless second grader (front two only). Additionally, they have a 5 year-old daughter, Jane, who was turned down for admission last year at Allen-Stevenson and is currently attending Ethical Culture.

Christopher J. Acerbo is the newly appointed Director of Security. This position was created based on the large expansion of the School along with today's sensitive climate. He recently retired from the New York City Police Department. During his twenty-one year career, Chris spent a majority of his time working in Manhattan. He was a Lieutenant in the Traffic Control Division, located in Midtown Manhattan and a Captain in our very own 19th Precinct. He retired as the Commanding Officer of the NYPD's Mounted Unit (horse patrol) where he was responsible for the City's 5 Police Troops. He is a graduate of Iona College and attended the FBI National Academy in the fall of 1998. In his spare time, Chris likes to golf, ski, run 5k's, and attend Mets games.

Mary Andrews is our newest member of the math department, teaching in both the Middle and Upper School. She is a graduate of the University of Minnesota (BS Chemistry) and the University of St. Thomas (Masters in Education). Mary taught chemistry, AP chemistry, astronomy and math at the Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn Heights. While at Packer, Mary coached Middle School basketball, was the faculty advisor to the Student-Faculty Judiciary Committee, developed an all-school recycling plan and danced in many of the dance concerts, as well as, played flute in the orchestra for the spring musicals. Her favorite pasttimes include: rollerblading, learning Polish, studying voice lessons and going to the theatre. Mary hopes to be a part of the artistic community at Allen-Stevenson, sharing her passion and knowledge learned in her many years of acting, dancing and singing in New York City.

Winston Charles, new to our maintenance department, came to the United States from the island of Grenada twenty-three years ago. Before coming to Allen-Stevenson, Winston worked for Tedel Construction in the carpentry and painting field. Tedel assigned him to work on the Allen-Stevenson Rooftop/Gym and the Monroe Building additions - this was the beginning of a long relationship. We are fortunate to have brought Winston over from Tedel permanently and we welcome him aboard.

Ernie Grigg started last February as a receptionist and moved to the Academic Office this fall. In 2004, he graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in Film, Television and Theatre. He has a background in sketch and improv comedy as both a writer and performer, and he has won awards for student films. Before joining us, Ernie worked briefly for Vitaminwater and Smartwater, where he wrote the funny descriptions on the bottles. Currently, he is pursuing a Master’s in Public Relations at NYU while co-writing and producing an independent film.

Jacinto Lopez joined the food Service staff a year ago. He is the Assistant to the Chef with a willingness to work. His pleasant demeanor and work ethics are great attributes to the department. He was born in Oaxaca, Mexico and lives in Manhattan with his wife and three children. We are pleased to welcome him to Allen-Stevenson.

Lori Popkowski joins our kindergarten staff as an Associate Teacher this year, after substitute teaching at Allen-Stevenson in kindergarten through third grades. Lori is a graduate of Southern Methodist University, and has embraced the teaching profession after a sixteen year career in advertising sales at Time Magazine and Reader’s Digest Magazine. Lori and her husband, John, have two children: Ana in twelfth grade at Chapin and Johnny in ninth grade at Riverdale.

Greg Ruehlmann is originally from Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2004, and spent his first post-graduate year in South Bend running programs for his alma mater's Campus Ministry office. Greg studied English and Theology and has also studied German at the Leopold-Franzen University in Innsbruck, Austria. He writes fiction and humor pieces as well as sketch comedy. His plans eventually include graduate school in literature.

Barbara Shindler joined Allen-Stevenson last year in November 2004, as an Associate third grade teacher with Chris Brozyna. She received her Masters from Bank Street College and taught for three years at the Ethical Culture School, two years in the second grade and one year in the first grade as an assistant teacher. Outside of school, Barbara is an avid reader, moviegoer and crossword puzzler. She also likes to practice yoga, travel and spend time with her family. Barbara has one son, Michael, a freshman at the Fieldston School.

McCartney Wilkins works with the Middle and Upper Schools as the Technology Resource teacher. In the spring, she will also be coaching the 5th/6th grade Lacrosse team. She joins us from Cathedral School, where she taught first grade and then third. She also assisted the Technology Director in working with teachers to integrate technology into their curricula and troubleshooting technical problems.

McCartney graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2001 with a degree in Special Education and Elementary Education (K-8). While at Vanderbilt she worked for Apple Computer as a campus representative. McCartney was just married last July and lives with her husband, Jay, on the Upper East Side.

The kindergarten rooms are made up of Centers, i.e. art, blocks, library, math, etc. The kindergarten block curriculum has always played a very important role in developing the skills of cooperative learning, physics, and story telling. The new classrooms allow for each class to have their own larger block area, as well as allowing the teachers the flexibility to create as many Centers as needed. In addition to the larger open areas, more space also means that each room has a place for quiet activities where a boy can go to look at a book, draw a picture or have a rest.

The kindergarten teachers are also taking advantage of the new community spaces. For Thanksgiving, the Lower School Town Center on the third floor will be used for a kindergarten feast, where the boys will be cooking, serving and eating a feast of their own creation.

We are all enjoying this wonderful new building. So, as you walk around, keep in mind a song that Ms. Schrade-James teaches the Kindergarten boys, “Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold.” For those of us who have been a part of this school for many years, I know that we will treasure our memories from the old classrooms. And, as we enjoy this new space, with all the possibilities that it offers, we will be making new memories to go with the old.

Their new environment fascinates the boys, and they enjoy the opportunities in exploring all the different areas. We have an inquiry-based, hands-on approach that focuses on the processes and techniques of discovery. Because the new lab provides opportunities for them to satisfy their innate curiosity as they develop their techniques for observing and questioning, the boys develop a positive attitude towards science and discovery.

We can rearrange the tables and stools to create a circular area, especially during our share days. We have beautiful storage cabinets both above and below the counter. The boys and I have organized our materials and supplies to provide easy access to items stored in the lower cabinets. This process has taught them both how to take responsibility and how to set up an investigation for group work.

A spacious, spotless room with sunlight streaming in through the many windows is the home of the Lower School’s new science lab. Long, wide counter tops display the many different green plants (sunflower, lima beans, and kidney beans, corn, and marigold), all planted by the second grade boys. Another counter top has bones, skulls, nests, and minerals displayed. An area is dedicated to our study of animals. A few reptiles are housed in that space (chameleons, gecko, dragon bearded lizard) along with our frogs and millipedes, soon to be joined by our snake.

With five low sinks for the boys, a refrigerator, and dishwasher, I am in heaven.

I am particularly excited by having all three science labs Lower School, Middle School and Upper School - sharing the 4th floor. My colleagues and I easily exchange ideas and share equipment. The best part of all happens when one of my colleagues stops in our lab and asks the boys to explain what they are investigating. The boys are thrilled when they are asked to discuss their work, especially when the science teachers of the “bigger boys” ask them.

The new pantry on the third floor is a fabulous addition to the Lower School. Equipped with a seamless stovetop, microwave, and yes, dishwasher, the kitchen will provide so many new opportunities to cook and to bake with the boys as they learn about places around the world and study family traditions during the holidays.

The Alligator Soup after-school cooking class now has a web of opportunities to teach the boys about cooking and baking. From kindergarten onwards, there are chefs in training! The value of the pantry provides opportunities to learn about nutrition, mathematics, organization and the joy of earth’s bounties.

It has always amazed me how much young children love to cook. They love the hands-on experience - the end justifying the means. And they are not as shy as one might think about trying new foods!

On a more philosophical level, cooking is one of the most ancient forms of community building. People talk, share, get a little messy; then they stop and ‘break bread’ together as equals. It is creative expression that hits the grassroots level.

On a final note, the boys are just having a great time, and the pantry provides us with a true multi-sensory approach to learning. Bon appetit!

One of the many benefits of our new building is that one of the three computer labs is located on the Lower School floor. In the past, the Lower School shared the lone computer lab with the other divisions in the School. This meant that each class was able to spend, on average, one scheduled period a week in the lab. While this was certainly better than nothing, it meant that most projects that were undertaken had to be the type that were completed in the course of one class period.

Now, as a result of this well-equipped new lab, classes can use this new facility in more flexible ways. This means that as teachers plan their weekly lesson plans and units they can incorporate the use of technology and computers into their plans in order to enhance the student’s learning. They then consult the lab schedule and find an available time to take their class. They will often work in consultation with a member of the technology department to plan the activity. What is particularly beneficial is that a student can begin working on a project one day and then come back to the lab the next day to continue the work. Classes can easily schedule multiple periods in the lab in any given week.

You may be asking yourself how, in addition to a more flexible scheduled lab, does the lab add to the educational experience of a Lower School boy? To this I can say that, as a reading teacher, I have always been intrigued by the notion of using technology to enhance and individualize the language arts program in the Lower School. This year, I have scheduled a regular time in the lab, something that would not have been possible in past years, and have begun using a range of software programs to help a group of emergent readers use technology to organize and create original written pieces. The program we are currently using is called “Clicker” and, among its many functions, it allows boys to create a written piece of work using words from a word bank that is stored in the computer. As they write, they can choose to have their work read back to them to check for accuracy. The program has many other functions, including the ability to help boys with sentence building, dialogue, alphabetizing and vocabulary development.

Having the software is just the icing on the cake, though. The computer lab itself with state-of-the-art equipment, a flexible schedule and a computer resource teacher is what is enabling us to use technology as the tool we wish it be - to enhance the Lower School students’ learning.

reading room Warm, cozy, inviting, these are all words the boys have used to describe the new Lower School Reading Room. With its egg-shaped banquette seating, the boys can spread out comfortably when listening to a story yet are contained enough to be actively engaged in a lesson on library skills. Having the entire collection housed in one space makes it much easier for the boys to choose books and for us to shelve them. With the addition of two computers for looking up books in the catalog and a data projector for demonstrating research skills, the LS Reading Room really is a perfectly self-contained unit.

The older boys also enjoy the Reading Room. It’s become their place of choice for silent reading during Book Break and D.E.A.R. The space is also a perfect staging area for Reader’s Theater and, of course, the perfect place to hear short stories read aloud. All in all, the Lower School Reading Room is turning out to be a surprisingly flexible space that welcomes all students.

Perhaps the best way to demonstrate how we feel about our new area is to read a sampling of quotations from the boys themselves.

roby music center The proximity of the Roby Music Center to the new Assembly Hall is exhilarating. It links process and product together as neighbors in a tangible way. I can teach a third grade class in the music room and then dash down to the Assembly Hall to try out their tone chime carol in concert acoustics. When practice feels close to performance - it is energized! Every single morning Mr. Schrade holds an orchestra rehearsal in the stage area (alternating A.S.O., A.S.P. and Jr. Orchestra), and the boys know this is where they will perform at the winter and spring Concerts.

No longer will everything have to be boxed up, shipped out and lugged across to St. Ignatius’ Wallace Hall, dodging inclement weather and New York drivers!

The new music room, the “L” shaped corridor of instrumental teaching studios which frame it, and, a few steps away, the balcony of the Assembly Hall (designed to serve as the third music teaching space) combine to constitute the Roby Music Center, situated on the main floor, just to the right of the spacious new reception area. Its note-worthy placement makes a solid statement about the value of music in an “enlightened traditional” education, as everyone who comes to AllenStevenson is first greeted by the sounds of orchestral and choral studies.

Gone are the days of viola and cello lessons being taught behind the salad bar, trombone and bass in the stairwell, and violin, flute and trumpet unintentionally accompanying science, Shakespeare and Upper School offices. Our brave Headmaster has placed his office over the music center, providing a noble buffer between the performing arts and the other academics. Now, the instrumental instructors share six studios, well vented and sound proofed so that even brass and percussions seem muted from the center corridor. The placement of the music office, shared by Ms. Demko, Mr. Schrade and me, is at the beginning of the “L”, enabling every child to find Mr. Schrade easily for help with clarinet malfunctions, string snafus, lost music, emergency lesson schedule changes and wise counsel. (In transition years, a French horn or violin lesson might have been on entirely different floors.) This location is critical to Mr. Schrade’s efficiently supervising an instrumental faculty of sixteen, scheduling one hundred and eighty lessons a week, and directing three orchestras and a junior ensemble.

One of the most time saving and marvelous innovations in our new Assembly Hall is the electronically manipulated room divider, which rises or lowers at the touch of a key, safeguarding the stage set up of chairs, music stands, timpani and percussion set for the next day’s orchestra rehearsal, while freeing up the rest of the hall for multi-purposes. For fifteen years, Mr. Schrade and friends built up and took down the entire orchestra set up before and after every single rehearsal!

All of this should make life easier for Ms. Demko and Mr. Burton, our new chorus teacher, and the Middle and Upper School choruses. Now the cumbersome choral risers will not have to be moved to St. Ignatius, or a piano rented for the concert. Ms. Demko has waited a long time to have the boys singing in three and four part harmony and able to hear all the parts in balanced acoustics.

With the welcoming of the new, we are able to revel in the best of the old. Returning alumni have delighted in recognizing the music lightboard, sharing memories of being taught the principles of note reading on it by my mother, Mrs. Rolande Young Schrade. This had been safely stored during construction and is now mounted in the new music room. Both the beautiful Steinway grand pianos she taught on for 21 years have been refinished and are at the center of our musical activities, today.

Allen-Stevenson has long been a school of note, regarded as an institution that maintains the credo that there are many ways to teach a boy, and in so many ways we embrace that potential each and every day. We are also now, physically, a school that can enhance that potential.

The School’s new look is not only beautiful, for that is undeniable, but it is also functional and efficient. The possibilities for self-growth and expression seem endless now. The students at Allen-Stevenson will find ways to maximize their years here in a way no other students dreamed possible and will set standards for the students yet to come.

theater for 5th During the fall semester, fifth grade students have been participating in the new Middle School theater program. The focus of the performances and activities works off of our study of ancient Greece, which forms the basis of our historical curriculum through December. Earlier in the school year, each boy had the opportunity to choose which aspect of the program he wanted to do. Some of the choices included drama, technology, backstage work, and art.

Drama teacher Mrs. Haber has been working on several plays with the drama group, including Aeschylus’ The Furies and Sophocles’ Electra.

The boys started out by reading the plays, understanding the storylines, pulling apart the characters in order to understand their mindsets, and learning about the history of ancient Greek theater. They are now rehearsing the plays and are working on their acting skills.

Fifth grade teacher Mrs. Tully has been working with boys to make Imovies about Ancient Greece.

Some are making documentaries

about topics ranging from the Olympics to Gods and Goddesses, while others are making commercials and travelogues of the ancient world.

Boys use the Internet to find images and then learn to record their commentary as well as soundtracks for their movies.

The art group has been hard at work creating a number of pieces that will eventually be used on the sets of the plays. Working with Ms. Kunin, Head of the Art Department, and I, the boys first spent several weeks researching different aspects of ancient Greek art by focusing on architecture, painting, sculpture, and pottery. Our trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art have enhanced our knowledge of art during this period and provided us with even more ideas for the projects.

After selecting and sketching a model, the boys are now working on creating the actual pieces from a number of different materials that will eventually add to the scenery and staging of the final performances.

As we move closer to the Greek Festival, the boys are looking forward to using the theater space to rehearse the plays and to learn about some of the backstage details.

Our new space has given us the opportunity to truly fulfill our mission, that is, to be a resource for both students and teachers. We have been able to display books and resources in a way we were not previously able to do. The new space allows us to have resources that both enrich and support the curriculum and is set up for easy access.

Each subject area is clearly labeled, and we have already been able to provide sources to teachers who need some extra ideas and materials to further enhance their teaching experience. In turn, our experience is enhanced as well, because we are doing just what we are here to do.

Set up like a suite, the new LRC has space for people to work in several different locations around the room without anyone feeling that they need to leave or find another space to do their own work. Our new conference room has already proven to be a useful space for meetings, testing, and one to one work with the boys.

Anne Meyer, the Director of the Learning Resource Center, has her own office within the LRC so that she can hold meetings with parents, teachers and students without feeling like anyone’s privacy is being compromised. We all have more space between our areas so we can set up our materials in an organized way to make everything more accessible. On a personal note, I love my corner of the new LRC. Anyone who knows me knows how I love to organize, feel settled, and, I’ll admit, have things lined up neatly at 90 degree angles. So for me, I am like a kid in a candy store in this new space!

The new building has provided us with so many opportunities to use space in different ways. Walking into this new building makes me excited to see what the day might bring. I actually feel energized telling people how amazing the new space is, and that energy spills over into my teaching experience everyday. It is for me personally a joy not to teach classes in various corners of the hallways in order to get away from the jack hammering and drilling (and I’m sure everyone appreciates not tripping over my reading groups)! As challenging and adventurous as it was, I know the feeling of accomplishment and pride in this new beautiful building, and the sense of being settled has made it so much easier to focus on the task at hand"to teach the boys.

art studio The New Art Studio The expansion of the Art Department’s physical space has enabled a creative expansiveness within the Allen-Stevenson boys too. With the increase of square footage and the new photography, kiln room, woodshop, and general art facilities, the range of possibilities for student creativity has increased dramatically. Seventh and eighth graders have been working on largescale figurative sculpture based on the work of several contemporary sculptors such as Oliver Herring and Magdalena Abakanowicz. Second grade boys have been working on sizeable architectural plans of imaginary cities, using details of different styles of buildings from different time periods. As the fifth grade interdisciplinary Greek Festival proceeds, the boys are working on large-scale sculptures of gods and giant mixed media drawings of Greek vessels. With a new freedom to work at any scale, the students have become more experimental with their ideas and their artwork. In the next few months the art department plans to further organize the main art room, designating areas for an art library, a reading area, and a printmaking corner.

The New Darkroom The intriguing and mysterious revolving black door near the fifth floor art room creates a light-tight passageway to the new darkroom. Our enlargers and darkroom supplies were formally housed in the old art room, where heavy black curtains hung from ceiling to floor to block the light. Each time we used the photo equipment, it was necessary to pull the curtains, attach enlarger lenses, connect timers, and set up photo easels and chemical trays before working. We would dismantle these supplies after photo class in an effort to keep the equipment safe and clean in a busy art room.

In our new space, six enlargers sit on a long countertop across from a new large stainless steel sink. Below each photo enlarger are corresponding shelves that house all the negative holders, easels, dust brushes and other parts and pieces necessary to create photos on that enlarger. An electric print dryer sits next to the sink ready to quickly dry photo paper so work can go home the day it is made. We are excited that this new room allows boys to work more consistently and independently, in a space designed specifically for this complex art form. We look forward to growing and expanding our curriculum to match the growth and expansion of our new space.

I get a big lift whenever I see the youthful looks of unbridled enthusiasm on the faces of the lower and middle school boys as they interact in their classrooms.

The first things most people notice when they walk into the new Upper School science lab are the hanging electrical outlets suspended from the ceiling. The black cord, attached to a large coil at one end and a grey box at the other, brings an inquisitive look to most faces. This is followed by the inevitable question, “What are those?” I usually give a “straight” answer but at times joke about their possible uses. The most important thing is what they represent and signify - a symbol of the new attitude and enthusiasm that the renovation at Allen-Stevenson has instilled in the staff and students.

The science department now has three new labs, one each designed for Lower, Middle, and Upper School programs. There is a new storage room, and a science office shared by the science teachers. It is so productive to be able to see your science colleagues throughout the day, meet with them regularly, and observe what they are doing with their students on a regular basis. In the past, five floors separated the two science rooms and hindered the interactions that lead to professional growth that is fostered by the frequent interaction of staff mem-

The new Upper School science lab was designed to allow for greater flexibility in our program and to permit movement and change in order to create a more functional room that accommodates our needs. The tables, which are smaller and movable, can be located anywhere in the room, joined together for a larger, flat surface, or moved to the side in order to enhance the activity at hand. The side counters, with their large flat surfaces, sinks, and electrical outlets, can be used to further accommodate lab activities.

There are storage cabinets on the walls and below the counters that allow us to keep things aside, yet still easily accessible. The microscopes are now located in a storage cabinet in the classroom, and students simply remove and return them quickly and efficiently as needed. Supplies for lab activities are laid out in convenient places, and activities run smoothly and with an economic use of time. A tug of war on scooters, demonstrating Newton’s third law of motion, takes place while all the tables are moved to the sides of the room.

As I write this article, it is still early in the year. The anticipation of how things will develop, what new ideas will emerge, and how problems will be solved, makes coming to work each day an exciting and uplifting experience.

It is too early to note all the ways the program will be enriched by our new facilities, but the possibilities are endless.

Pre-C Allen-Stevenson (that is, preconstruction) was intimate, cozy, and close-knit – all euphemisms for “I can just about fit eighteen bodies and eighteen backpacks in this room if I give myself an 8” x 10” maneuvering space at the front of the class.” While creativity and imagination are educators’ sacred fonts, when a class must turn rightward as a single unit in order for one student to pass through, those wells run dry darn quickly.

How freeing, then, to teach in rooms that allow movement in numerous directions, performed simultaneously, and without the threat of bodily injury. Small knots of students engaged in cooperative academic pursuits are now able to spread out comfortably across Upper School halls. Dramatic recitations and performances may be more fully realized now that there is ample room for movement. A calmness heretofore lacking in the higher classes is evident now because of passageway, classroom, and meeting area spaciousness. This freedom was hard won. Anyone who lived through the months (and months) of construction or the raising of funds to create our new Allen-Stevenson will attest to this. However, one thought – with a nod to Madison Avenue – rings true: What price “freedom”? Priceless.

The true luxury of our building’s new shared spaces was realized when the boys asked for extra time to work on their iMovies. The Upper School Town Center allowed for the entire grade to spread out and work during their free time; it was filled with laptops, books, music, and boys at 7:15am! The results of teacher collaboration and a great deal of effort on the students’ parts provide an excellent framework which the boys will reference as they study 19th and 20th century American History.

Allen-Stevenson’s new facility allows ample opportunities for collaboration both through physical space and incredible resources. Traditionally, technology has been cast as its own discipline. Today, Allen-Stevenson’s new vision is about integration. Our new full-time technology specialist, McCartney Wilkins, works with teachers to enhance their existing curricula.

In Alejandra Dubove’s seventh grade history class for the “American Dream” project, the boys begin the year with an overview of 120 years of history through the study of music. In previous years they have created timelines with poster board, scissors, glue, and markers.

Allen-Stevenson’s ability to provide multi-media resources has created a paradigm shift.

This year, the boys brought their timelines to life using iMovie, an audio-visual computer program. They were divided into collaborative groups and assigned a twentyyear period in which to become experts. After the boys used the Internet and printed materials to conduct their

kitchen & dining A New Era for Allen-Stevenson in Food Service Our old lunchroom space was shared with every non-food event under the sun. Robust boys wrestled, countless plays and musical performances took place and even a few volcanoes, as planned, exploded at science fairs. We watched our vegetables change to goblin-like colors from theatrical lighting effects during play rehearsals. In this community, we had always welcomed the diversity of this space. Yet we all have longed and yearned for an eating space that would complement the creative work of a dedicated kitchen staff, along with an ambience appropriate for dining and enjoying lunch.

Finally, Allen-Stevenson now has a dining room! Boys are now eating at round tables with china service. Except for the Kindergarteners, who eat family-style, boys are able to peruse a hot food station display with menu offerings of the day as they line up for cafeteria-style service. Two salad bars are strategically centered in the dining area; one displays items to make-theirown-salads while the other is designed as a sandwich and yogurt/dessert bar.

Health and nutrition factors are still the core of the lunch program. We have begun to offer organic food items such as yogurt, broccoli and oranges. More organic items will be added weekly. Whole grain cereal, pasta and other high fiber foods like bulgur, wheat berries and brown rice will continue to be staples on our menu. We are addressing the trans fat issue, and some of our snacks are now trans fat-free. We notified our bakeries about our standards regarding acceptable ingredients.

The boys are now able to see the true colors of the wide array of vegetables and fruits we offer. It is very gratifying to see how boys are eating many more fruits and vegetables than in the past. With a beautiful display of fresh flowers on round tables, comfortable black chairs to sit on, controlled lighting and air conditioning, it shouldn’t be a surprise when several boys exclaimed, “it’s like a restaurant for children!”

Of course, there couldn’t be a good cart without a good working horse and driver! The Allen-Stevenson community was often amazed with the quality of lunches the kitchen staff produced within the limited space and confinement of the old kitchen. The staff is as dedicated now in the new space as they were in the old setting and works diligently to ensure that everyone can find what he or she would like to eat. The new kitchen affords a more practical workflow, and the layout allows staff to work comfortably and efficiently. The hot food work area is separate, which makes production easier, and the addition of air conditioning has made our work experience a lot cooler!

We know everyone in the community appreciates our efforts - especially the boys who always make a special effort to tell us how much they love our cooking and the new space.

The new Allen-Stevenson Wellness Center is a big attraction for the Upper School students who enjoy the stateof-the-art equipment. Included in our equipment are two treadmills, one elliptical trainer, one recumbent bike, two multi-functional strength-training pieces, two adjustable benches, and several sets of free weights.

Ninth grader Jonathan Beckles ’06 says, “I am excited about lifting weights and getting stronger so that I can have a great basketball season and be better prepared for high school basketball.”

During their academic day, boys in the Upper School have a one-hour class one day a week dedicated to Wellness. During this time they rotate weekly through the three components of the Wellness Program: strength and cardiovascular training, nutrition, and SAQ (speed, agility, quickness). The use of a Wellness portfolio allows the boys to track their progress in each discipline.

Strength and cardiovascular training occurs in the Wellness Center. Each boy performs twenty minutes of cardiovascular exercise and twenty-five minutes of strength-training. The SAQ component occurs in the gymnasium. Instructors use cones, floor ladders, and other equipment to help strengthen and improve agility, quickness, explosiveness, and speed. Nutrition classes focus on healthy eating and how food affects the human body. Vitamins, minerals and the food pyramid are some of the other topics that are covered.

The coaching staff is excited to have such a wonderful space, and we look forward to watching our boys get bigger, faster, and stronger.

Coin drive for Hurricane Katrina victims

All Allen-Stevenson parents are members of our Parents’ Association (PA) which supports a wide range of activities throughout all levels of the school. New parents especially ask about our organization and what the best way to participate might be. Parents who have been at the School awhile may just want a refresher on the PA’s activities.

There are myriad ways the PA enhances life at the School and just as many ways to participate: • PA Meetings: we hold approximately 4 meetings each year that serve to brief the parent body on up-coming events and provide forums for various speakers. The new Assembly Hall serves as a welcome venue for these school-wide meetings.

• Parent Discussion Groups: generally grade specific, these discussions may be moderated by a faculty member, administrator, or an outside facilitator. Topics range from academics to social issues.

• Safety Patrol: all parents walk neighborhood safety patrol once each year for each child at the school. Our local police inform us that this program, adopted by most of the neighborhood schools, contributes to the safety of not only Allen-

Stevenson boys but all children walking home in the afternoon.

• C.A.F.E. (Cultural Awareness for Everyone): several events, such as book discussions, are held each year to celebrate the diversity of families at the School.

• Spring Benefit: this annual event brings together parents from all grades; proceeds are donated to the School’s Scholarship Fund. Last year’s event generated $245,000 for this fund.

• Skating Party: another annual event for all families held at Wollman Rink.

• Book Fair: all proceeds from this spring book sale go to the Library Fund.

• Annual Arts Festival: this spring festival showcases the artistic talent of our children. Throughout the year the new art displays in the Main Hall and elsewhere will also showcase the boys’ art.

• Community Service: parents and boys participate in many activities (All Soul’s Soup Kitchen, Katrina relief, book, food and toy drives, among others) that further the PA’s mission to foster a sense of community and aid in

fundraising for worthy causes.

• The Drama Committee: we organize the volunteers who assist with costumes, make-up, hair styling and other facets of the productions. This year we are very excited to have the productions performed at A-S in our new Assembly Hall.

The PA is directed by an Executive Committee and Advisory Committee, which meet on a regular basis.

Additionally, each activity is organized and staffed by its own committee, and volunteers are always welcomed.

The breadth of the PA activities is a tribute to the commitment of the AllenStevenson parents to our children, our School and the larger community. Our new office is located in the lobby, past the reception desk. We invite you to drop in or contact us and find a way to participate that suits your interests. In the first stages of the Campaign, donors gave to a “Building Reserve Fund” -- not to an actual facilities plan - as well as to the School’s Endowment.

In fact, the Campaign raised over $10 million before we finalized the building plans and secured their approvals in 2003. How generous and selfless these early Campaign donors were, as their own sons would graduate before a new schoolhouse could be realized. Yet they wanted to leave a legacy and to provide for future generations at Allen-Stevenson.

With the commitment of the Campaign Committee and the generosity of hundreds of donors, this effort has moved forward at an impressive rate. As of November 2005, we have raised $23.3 million in pledges and contributions toward the goal to raise at least $25 million by June 2006. This is an extraordinary accomplishment -- assuming that we meet the goal -- for a small elementary school!

The building is complete – and is, by all accounts, a success -- yet there is work still to be done. A critical part of this work is to complete successfully the Capital Campaign. While we have bridge financing through tax-exempt bonds, the long term stability of the School depends on meeting the Campaign goal so that we can be in a strong financial position, pay off these bonds, and fortify the Endowment.

THE UNICORN FUND

During this school year, we will reach out to all Allen-Stevenson constituents who have not yet given, or been asked to give, to the Today and Tomorrow Campaign. Solicitors will make calls; and in early 2006, we will mail a general appeal for the Campaign.

As you can see from the articles in this Lamplighter, our magnificent new schoolhouse is enabling ways of teaching not possible before at AllenStevenson. The Today and Tomorrow Campaign assists the building, the people and, most importantly, the teaching of Allen-Stevenson. By banding together to complete the Campaign – and its goals for our transformed facility and a larger Endowment for faculty compensation, financial aid and program initiatives -- we can help assure a stronger Allen-Stevenson for today and tomorrow.

Although there are many new changes within the building, one addition to the gymnasium floor has an impressive story behind it. A large blue and gold image now takes great presence on the floor of the gym, proudly displaying a Unicorn, Allen-Stevenson’s mascot.

The Unicorn became the School’s mascot in 1947, but it has long been absent from daily involvement in Allen-Stevenson culture—until this year.

Last spring, a student-led initiative, spearheaded by Peter Eames ’05, made the Unicorn more prominent. Eames took it upon himself, with the guidance of the Upper School and Development office, to raise funds to incorporate the Unicorn into the new building. After meeting with Mr. Alifano and then making a speech to his classmates, who endorsed this effort, Eames decided to ask the help of Allen-Stevenson parents to raise the funds needed.

“I want us to be proud of our mascot which symbolizes trust, strength and protection,” Eames said in his letter to parents. He wrote to them asking for participation in this project and reported that the School’s administration was also behind him, willing to match any money raised.

Over 20 families contributed to the Unicorn Fund, allowing for the creation of a new Unicorn logo and the placement of this image on the gym floor. The fund will also enable the School’s mascot to be more prominent in its representation at Allen-Stevenson. The new Unicorn image is more modern and powerful, and most importantly, consistently represented. Now the AllenStevenson mascot is uniform and can be used to represent all aspects of the School from athletics and academics to family events. In addition to its presence on the gym floor, the new Unicorn design will proudly be displayed on the wall in the Wellness Center, on team t-shirts, and as a back drop in the athletic showcases. It is also on the cover of the Upper School wellness center portfolios and the Upper School handbook, as well as on the balloons used at the New Building Dedication. Now, opposing teams will fully understand our pride when we cheer “Go Corns” at Allen-Stevenson games.

Fantastic defensive plays and good pitching kept us in games during the early innings. With many returning players and the addition of some new exciting Upper School players, we are encouraged about our chances in this year’s league play.

We’re history, we graduates. We’re Old timers. By tomorrow, our time at AllenStevenson will be permanently in the past, resurrected only in our memory, which fades, as each of us grows older and more decrepit. However, whether or not this year’s graduates, or I, remember every aspect of our years at AllenStevenson doesn’t matter. This school has forever established in us a much deeper foundation of Worldly knowledge that could be used to help students get an A+ on a report for history class, or get a job as a reporter for the Wall Street Journal. While I cannot speak for all graduates, I realize that every relevant choice I make in my life outside Allen-Stevenson will be that much more enlightened by what I have developed here -- an open mind to new opportunities, new skills, new opinions, and an inherent need to test the breadth of my potential.

It goes without saying for all graduates, however, that Allen-Stevenson has influenced all of us. So many years have passed between the first time I walked through the doors of this school, and now, as I talk to you, my friends, through this microphone. To be here for such a long time, to grow up here, to make friends here, to experience the ups and downs of life here -- that’s what my classmates and I are leaving behind. Allen-Stevenson was the background of my life. It gave my life substance. It made my life level, and to make such a remarkable experience suddenly end feels strange. I cannot fathom a life after Allen-Stevenson. The prospect of a new school seems too outrageous to be true.

However, I know we will move on. I have ambitions and goals to accomplish, as do my classmates and friends, I’m sure.

But I think they share my bewilderment when I say that I still am not sure where my life will lead me. After all, no one can predict the future. Will our new schools turn out to be another Allen-Stevenson? Probably not. But, we will still try to go in the right direction, as opposed to the wrong one, and aspire to be the best. As Emily Dickenson once wrote, “The sailor cannot see the North, but knows the needle can.”

As a last trumpet call, I must mention the faculty, for they are the depths and dimensions of Allen-Stevenson. If schools were faces, the faculty would determine the shape of the nose, the quality of the skin and teeth, the amount and placement of facial hair, etc. The years you graduates have devoted to Allen-Stevenson have been dealt with exceptionally well by a staff whose unmitigated dedication towards teaching has proven time and time again to enthrall students. These are teachers who have a talent for what they do, a talent from which I shall judge my future high school and college professors.

We graduates have been challenged academically, athletically and artistically at Allen-Stevenson, and we’re more fulfilled students from those challenges. After all, the harder we work, the sweeter our payoff. Nonetheless, there is still a long road ahead. We will each face new predicaments in our future lives, and if no one can bite the bullet and fix them, then those problems will only get worse. Today, Allen-Stevenson has shown us the rewards of hard work. Our graduation is proof of that. On that note, the next time life presents another crisis, we, as Allen-Stevenson students, will remember the rewarding aspect of being challenged and our difficulties will not seem so unconquerable. Thank you very much; I’ll be here all week.

no particular order. It should be said that this advice is not aimed at tomorrow or this year but generally for your future.

One: Wear a condom. I will give no further explanation, because none is needed.

Two: Learn a language and travel widely. See the world. Do not rely on everyone speaking English.

When I was at A-S we began French in the first grade. Sadly, that is no longer the case. Ours is now a global society, a trite phrase, but very true. For those interested in the subject read Thomas Friedman’s The World is Flat.

When David Trower asked me to give the speech for this event, my immediate reaction was: “Haven’t they heard enough from me”.

But he persisted and insisted and so here I am. As a true son of Allen-Stevenson, from that day on I obsessed about what to say to you. Of course, the Class of 2005 is my class too – because of my son Andrew, who is here today, along with a number of his classmates who graduated last year. The fact that I have known many of you, and your parents, for nine or ten years doesn’t make my task any easier.

As I was preparing for this day, I thought about the twelve or so graduation speeches I have heard and their reminiscences about life at A-S in the old days. I read all my old yearbooks from first through ninth grade (believe it or not I still have all of them). What I did not do was read all my old report cards and comments, which my mother had carefully preserved. I read them once and can’t bear to do it again. I recall persistent comments like: “Ronnie talks too much.” “Ronnie thinks he is the class clown!”

That is sobering stuff!

What that means is that with the internet and jet travel, the boundaries that my generation grew up with are falling away. Business is being conducted on a worldwide basis. Much of our labor force is foreign born. Foreign markets are the targets of most U.S. corporations. We cannot truly be comfortable working with and socializing with people of different cultures, races and faiths unless we get to know them and understand their frame of reference. We need to understand where they come from. We need to understand their roots. We must not just tolerate or accept diversity, we must embrace it. It is not sufficient to say “I am not prejudiced” or “All people are the same”. That is not true. People are different, and we must understand and exalt those differences.

Third: Take responsibility for your lives and what you make of them.

You are at the beginning of your lives. You have been given a fine education, which brings with it the ability to think, to write and to speak. You are a triple threat. You can make your life whatever you want it to be. It is up to you, no one else – not your parents, not your teachers, not your deans. Set goals for yourself that are challenging. Do not be satisfied with the mediocre. Nothing worthwhile is achieved without hard work. You can always get by by doing less, by taking shortcuts, but the only person you will be shortchanging is yourself. I urge you to take pride in what you do and do the best you can – for yourself.

So I scrapped the reminiscence idea. I did see some great pictures of three Michaels: Michael Douglas, Michael Eisner and Michael Joseloff, Matthew’s father and my close friend from 7th grade on.

I then asked Andrew what I should do and his advice was “make it funny and keep it short”. I told him that batting .500 was great.

This will be short.

Fourth: Make friends; be good to your friends and expect your friends to be good to you. Maintain your friendships.

They will mean a lot to you over the years. Your friends will enable you to share your troubles and joys – and there will likely be much of both. Think of others and the impact of your words and actions on others. Respect all those with whom you come into contact and require them to respect you. Too often we are so surrounded by our own cocoon that we fail to look outward and think of others’ feelings. Put yourself in their place.

As I continued to muse about this speech, my wife and I went to Tuscany for a wedding, and as we sat around drinking wine with some good friends from London we talked about what advice to give to you. I share with you the results of our collective wisdom in

Fifth: Involve yourself in the community, whether it be schools, religious institutions, or other forms of public service.

I commend to you the career of Bill Donaldson, Adam’s dad – another member of the Class of 2005. This month he leaves his

job as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Early in his career he co-founded an investment bank, Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, which he took public, the first investment bank to be listed on the NYSE. Bill was later Chairman of the NYSE and Chairman and CEO of Aetna, a major insurance company. Bill also served as Undersecretary of State to Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, was special counsel to Vice President Nelson Rockefeller and was the founding Dean and a Professor of Management of the Yale Graduate School of Management. He has served on many corporate and non-profit boards. And there is more. But the point is not that Bill Donaldson has accomplished much (he has), but that he has combined public service with business. While few can achieve at such a lofty level, what is important is that you use your talents for social benefit.

Sixth: In my professional career as a lawyer, whether advising paying clients or non-profit institutions, I am often asked what the client should do in a difficult situation – one in which there may well be criticism or even a lawsuit. My advice is invariably the same: “Do the right thing!” That is what I now tell you. “Do the right thing.” By now you should know right from wrong. Do not do the wrong thing because someone tells you can get away with it. Do not do the wrong thing because it is a popular or easy choice. You may not be able to avoid criticism. You may not be able to avoid a lawsuit, but, having thought through carefully the alternatives, if you do the right thing, things will work out. And, most important, you will be true to yourself, true to your upbringing and true to the fine education you have had.

Finally, we say at Allen-Stevenson that there are many ways to be a boy – that is an important part of our respect for our students – so too are there many ways to succeed.

I want to read you a piece by Bessie Stanley written in 1905 (a hundred years ago). Ms. Stanley entered a contest that called for a response to the question “What is Success.” This piece is often incorrectly attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson. Here it is: “He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent followers, the trust of the pure and open minded and the love of children; who has left the world a better place than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem or a rescued soul; who has never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty or failed to express it; who has looked for the best in others and given them the best he had; whose acts in life have been an inspiration and whose work a benediction.”

And so I wish you happiness and success.

ALLEN-STEVENSON ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC On May 10, 2005, over 50 alumni, parents, past parents, and friends of Allen-Stevenson gathered at Rockaway Hunting Club for the Seventh Annual Allen-Stevenson Golf Classic. The day began with practice time on the range and putting green, followed by a buffet luncheon, and a best ball round of golf. The group had a great time both on the course enjoying the sunny weather as well as at the post-golf cocktail reception, silent auction, and awards presentation.

This year, the Committee unanimously voted that the 2005 AllenStevenson Annual Golf Classic again benefit the Golf Classic Fund, which was formed last year and enriches the programs of the School's Athletic Department. The money raised from the 2004 Golf Classic helped the Athletic Department to pay for new sports uniforms, gym supplies, and team transportation. Through the very generous contributions of many underwriters and auction donors of this year's event, all net profits from the 2005 Golf Classic again supported the School's athletic programs and athletes. Founders Day began during the Centennial Year, 1983. Its goal is to celebrate Allen-Stevenson and its heritage, linking the boys of today with both alumni and former faculty from the past. In addition, the activities of the boys during the day develop their knowledge and appreciation of the School and its community.

On October 7, 2005, Allen-Stevenson was privileged to have as its speaker for Founders Day former faculty member, Stanley Gauger.

Mr. Gauger was Head of the Music Department from 1949 to 1987. He began the tradition of Gilbert & Sullivan performances at the School and established the orchestra program that flourishes today. After his talk, Mr. Gauger was honored at a reception for alumni in the Assembly Hall.

Mr. Gauger opened his remarks on a whimsical note, expressing his admiration of Harry Potter who, he felt, would have played the French horn as opposed to Hermione who would have played the oboe. He gave an overview of what the School was like when he came. He was hired because his predecessor was a vocal musician.

The Headmaster was then Huck Stevenson, the son of founder Robert Alston Stevenson. Huck Stevenson hired Mr. Gauger in the hope that he could teach his son the clarinet. This was the beginning of instrumental instruction at the School, and a fledgling orchestra was born.

He then described what the School was like in those days. It was much smaller, there was a tiny kitchen with the food delivered through the locker room, the Headmaster typed his own letters, and there was chapel five days a week. Punishments consisted of both paddling and holding a wooden chair upright in front of oneself.

Team sports were limited to football, baseball, and basketball.

The faculty and staff included: Dr. Simboli who taught Latin; Hubert Clark who ran the lunch room with an iron hand, punishing noise makers by having them sit under the piano; Miss Kelly in the Headmaster’s office; Emma Jones who was both the financial manager and the 3rd grade teacher; and Mildred Green who orchestrated the closing exercises for Grades 1 and 2 and made sure that each child had a part to perform. Prize Day went on for 3 1/2 hours with debates, the orchestra playing, the chorus singing, and tumblers tumbling.

Mr. Gauger was also instrumental in hiring Mrs. Schrade as his assistant, and the Schrade dynasty of musicians was born, living on today with Mr. Randy Schrade ’76 and Ms. Robelyn Schrade-

Dean Landis ’78 reported that The Campaign for Allen-Stevenson: Today and Tomorrow has raised $22 million to date and Alex Gellert ’79 said that alumni gave $227,732 through 290 gifts to the 2004-05 Annual Fund and 13% of the alumni have contributed. Schools such as Buckley and St. Bernard’s have over 20% participation from their alumni, and we are working toward this same level of commitment.

Young Alumni Day, the Hockey Benefit and Cocktails for the Classes of 1980-1998 were highly successful and will be repeated again for the 2005-06 year. The Alumni Basketball game and Story time will be reinstated; the Gilbert & Sullivan production will be Patience. Clint Johnson ‘79 commented on the Golf outing which was held, thanks to Clifton York ‘78, at the Rockaway Hunting Club. It was again successful and raised over $34,000 for the Golf Athletic Fund.

The Founders Day speaker will be Stanley Gauger, former head of the Music Department at Allen-Stevenson from 1949 to 1987. There will be a reception for alumni who were here during the Gauger years at 11 am on October 7th.

There will also be an alumni gathering in London which Mr. Trower will attend on October 6th, and we hope to have one in Florida in 2006. The Alumni Dinner will be held at the School on December 2nd. It will give Alumni the opportunity to see the new facilities and each other and it will be priced to attract as many alumni as possible back to the School. Donations and ticket purchases above the base price of $50 are welcome, as the event cost is approximately $150 per person.

The amendment to the By-Laws was passed by a majority vote and all officers’ terms will now be of three years duration. The School is in the process of significantly upgrading the web site to be launched after the first of the year, and it will be more interactive.

The meeting adjourned and Mr. Pariseau took those interested on a tour of the School.

40s Francisco Yllescas '49 was honored in Ecuador by a group of friends and members of the jounalistic circle of the province who met at the Union Club (the most exclusive club of the city) to give a testimonial dinner in honor of Francisco on his 40th anniversary as a journalist. Dr. Ramiro Larrea, Vice President of the National Congress (roughly the “Speaker of the House”) was present at the testimonial. Francisco visited AllenStevenson in September and was amazed at the new facilities which are totally changed from his time there.

I am now working on a 35 story residential hi-rise on the West Side. My son, Kyle, has started high school this year. I attended a seminar on Romania hosted by Jim Rosapepe ’66. I was recently raised to Master Mason at the True Craftsman's Lodge 651 in Manhattan”.

Richard Earle Thomas ’66 was featured in a New York Times article in September titled “A Boy on a Mountain, Now a Patriarch on Broadway”. In it, he thanks his AllenStevenson first grade teacher who doubled as a theatrical agent. After 32 years in Los Angeles, he has moved back to New York and is currently co-starring with Jill Clayburgh in a Roundabout Theater production of Richard Greenberg's comedy "A Naked Girl on the Appian Way." Richard visited the School on Founders Day to attend the reception for Stanley Gauger.

Richard DeMarco ’57 (rick.demarco@usa.net) has recently opened a new Computer Troubleshooters franchise in the greater Leonia/Englewood, NJ area. Rick says, "After working for corporations my entire life, I'm delighted to operate my own business. I feel that my success as a computer troubleshooter is due to my technical knowledge and lifelong love of computers. I enjoy solving customers' problems. This also allows me to build personal relationships with individuals and small business owners in order to develop service programs tailored to their individual needs."

Marc Francis Goeller Giattini ’68 (mgiattini@attglobal.net) writes that he and his wife have lived on Sanibel Island, Florida, since 1998 while also maintaining a home in Portugal. A career attorney, he has founded, owned, operated and supported a variety of business ventures for more than two decades. Mr. Giattini’s wife, Cheryl, is an attorney by training who now provides marketing and public relations services to a diverse commercial and non-profit client base. They founded and are co-chairs of the Friends of Gulfshore Ballet, and Marc is vice president of the Board of Directors of the J.N. “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society.

80s Paul John Weitz ’80 (dan@depthoffield.biz) On April 25th, Paul’s new play, “Privilege”, about two affluent Upper East Side adolescents, opened at the Second Stage Theater in New York to a rave review in the New York Times. The reviewer said, “It is rare enough to encounter fully imagined men and women onstage these days, people who move and amuse us not by seeming larger than life, but by appearing to be precisely the

right size. To encounter two youngsters drawn with such tender regard for their real and complicated humanity is nearly miraculous”.

Paul has also written and is directing “American Dreamz” which he is producing with his brother, Chris Weitz ’84 for Universal Pictures. It will star, among others, Hugh Grant, Dennis Quaid, and Mandy Moore. It is described as a satire of American politics and show business.

Justin Michael Belmont ’98 (jbelmont@swarthmore.edu) was featured in an article in the Swarthmore College newspaper, The Phoenix, about his new venture, Artocity. His Artocity collection blurs the line between photography and painting while remaining marketable and accessible to the general public. He recruited some photographers and computer graphics artists -he now has a dozen, including himself -- wrote a business plan, got the necessary financial and legal advice, designed the Artocity Web (www.artocity.com) site and launched it last August. Now a graduate of Swarthmore College, Justin will be working as a financial analyst at Indus Capital, an Asian focused hedge fund in New York.

Alexander H. Klebanoff ’98 (gtrvaughn@aol.com) graduated from Bard College and is representing a stable of artists as a private dealer and art advisor. He plans to work at a gallery in the marketing and sales department.

Graham W. Winfrey ’98 (graham.winfrey@trinitycoll.edu) and Wells M. Winfrey ’98 (wells.winfrey@trinitycoll.edu) graduated from Trinity College, Hartford, with majors in English Literature. Graham minored in Film, and Wells in Spanish.

Joshua Robert Brodie ’99 (jbrodie@mindspring.com) was honored at the Opening Exercises at Princeton as he was awarded, along with a classmate, the George B. Wood Legacy Junior Prize presented each year to a member of the senior class in recognition of exceptional academic achievement during the junior year. Josh is an A.B. candidate, majoring in mathematics and completing certificates in finance and in applied and computational mathematics. Josh also received the Shapiro Prize for Academic Excellence for his freshman year. He is exploring graduate school options and looking into possible careers in finance. As one of two editors of the opinion page of Princeton's student newspaper, The Daily Princetonian, Josh coordinates content and works with the editorial board to research and write staff editorials.

00s Luke Alexander Phillips ’00 (l.a.phillips@gmail.com) stopped by School recently and saw many faculty members. He is living in London, attending the School of Asian and African Studies and has just finished an internship at Christie’s in the Islamic Arts and Carpets Department. He was at the London dinner with Mr. Trower in October.

Damian Christopher VanCamp ’00 (dvancamp@risd.edu) had three photos featured recently in a group show in Providence. He is currently preparing to work on large, freestanding Daguerreotypes for a senior thesis project exploring photography as sculptural object. His band, Open Till Midnight, (www.opentillmidnight.com) is doing well and continuing to play shows at colleges and universities as well as smaller venues in NYC. The band performed at the Lion's Den in New York in November as did Etienne J. Vasquez’s ’00 band, By Chance, (www.bychanceband.com)

David Jake Goldman ’01 (jgoldman@gmail.com) stopped by the School in November. He was in town for the Bloomberg/Ferrer election as he worked all summer organizing volunteers as he ran the Students for Bloomberg Campaign. He will be transferring to the University of Southern California next fall.

Alexander Cambria ’02 (fccambria@hotmail.com) writes “My family moved to Melbourne, Australia in 2002 where I attended the St. Michaels Grammar School (it was a joint primary and secondary school). I graduated from there in November 2004 and am now attending the University of Melbourne doing a joint Arts/Law degree which is going to be a 5 year course. I am planning to visit New York in the not too distant future to catch up with some of my friends and am looking forward to paying you all a visit as well!”

Clayton Fletcher Parker ’02 (cparker@syracuse.edu) writes “During the summer of 2004, I worked at the New York City Department of Environmental Protection headquarters out in Corona, Queens as a volunteer computer technician. I helped out with situations at hand there and ended up raking in 112 hours that I put towards my requirement for York Prep graduation. I have the position again for the summer of 2005 as a paid college aide.” He is now attending Syracuse University - School of Information Studies.

Rudolph Vincent Pica ’02 (rvp917@aol.com) is a Freshman at American University in Washington, DC. He has a great internship marketing and selling season tickets for the Washington Capitals hockey team. He is in a special Mentorship program at A.U., studying on the Hill and meeting lobbyists, senators and members of many government organizations.

Alex Logan Steinhardt ’04 (NYDigitalbug@aol.com) and David Maxwell Steinhardt ’04 (krazytaxi@aol.com), students at Dalton and Trinity respectively, founded, with their parents, Homework Helpers, a non-profit organization that provides computers to community centers that can provide a quiet space for a computer lab and are willing to offer curriculum-based after-school programs. Homework Helpers has provided 15 computers, two printers and software to the Harlem Educational Activities Fund and, last year, sent out solicitation letters that raised over $55,000. They are also working with the city Parks Department to develop computer labs in four recreation centers.

Peter Laurence Eames ’05 (eamesboy@yahoo.com), in his speech for the Upper School Speech Contest, made a plea for the re-emphasis of the unicorn as the School mascot. He started a fundraising effort to promote the mascot on sports equipment and especially in the Gym. (See a full description in Money Matters, page 33). Peter is now attending Riverdale Country School.

Alex A. Ingram ’03 (voltage4@aol.com) stopped by School in November. He is enjoying Horace Mann where he founded the Horace Mann Business League. They are now involved in actual investing with their Economics teacher.

Third Grade teacher, Chris Brozyna and his wife Patty are now the proud parents of a baby boy named Skyler born August 26, 2005.

Sadmir Deljanin, from A-S maintenance and his wife Esma are thrilled to announce the birth of a baby boy, Ziam, on August 13, 2005.

In October, Julia Kunin, Head of the Art Department, was a visiting artist at New Mexico State University at Las Cruces, giving a lecture about her work as well as conducting Graduate and Undergraduate critiques in the MFA and BFA programs. From New Mexico, she traveled to Marfa, TX to attend the opening at the Chinati foundation of minimalist sculptor, and former A-S faculty member, Donald Judd and his museum and artist residency.

Computer teacher, Fran Margolis and her husband, Jonathan, welcomed Micah Joseph on August 5, 2005.

Art/woodshop teacher, Rob McCallum, was recently invited by the Peace Education Center at Teachers College, Columbia University, to give a workshop for art educators from Afghanistan. The workshop titled “Arts Processes as Alternative Pedagogies” focused on teacher training and approaches in art education as a catalyst for rebuilding and addressing community issues. His experience as an art educator in South Africa was a valuable resource for the workshop. The teachers from Afghanistan are enthusiastic about the idea of further collaboration with the art department at Allen-Stevenson.

Michelle Palmer, Development Associate and her partner, Andy Waldron, welcomed their first son, Jaden T. Palmer-Waldron on April 27, 2005.
