Allen-Stevenson’s three-fold educational program is based on a curricular foundation of Academics, Athletics, and the Arts, where each domain must engage boys vigorously to succeed. This Lamplighter highlights one of these “3 A’s”—Athletics— in a series of short articles on physical education, team sports, wellness and dance. You will detect that a major goal of Allen-Stevenson’s athletics program is to develop healthy life-long habits and positive attitudes towards physical fitness.

As a child who did not think of himself as an athlete, I would have benefitted from Allen-Stevenson’s approach, where boys of all levels and abilities can find a place and feel included. My self-esteem was fine, because I knew I had lots of other strengths and interests. However, I never really seemed to acquire the skills needed to succeed at sports, especially football, basketball and baseball. I played tennis and soccer, I hiked and camped, and I ran and swam passably. But I still yearned to be expert at something athletic.

Not until my first teaching job did I realize that I was actually pretty good at lots of physical activities—just not football, basketball or baseball. As a young teacher at Exeter, I was assigned to coach intramural teams, and I liked the fact that it got me to

the gym on a regular basis. Moreover, I ran virtually every day, and I took up squash and cross-country skiing. In addition, I helped to start a program based on Outward Bound. These new passions led me to understand my physical being differently. Not surprisingly, I also felt better, and I had more energy.

As a result of these experiences, I believe that Allen-Stevenson’s athletic program must include a variety of opportunities for every boy. Like the other two A’s, athletics encourages students to develop those values we prize in the Allen-Stevenson Code. As we say, “At Allen-Stevenson we inspire boys to become Thoughtful, Responsible, Generous, Respectful, Studious, Enthusiastic, Determined, Creative, Good.”

These values connect Academics, Athletics and the Arts in ways that are fundamental to all good learning.

Over the last quarter-century, educators have come to broaden the concept of intelligence to encompass the domain of athletics. Professor Howard Gardner’s theory of “multiple intelligences,” for example, maps at least eight forms of ability, one of which he calls the “bodilykinesthetic” intelligence. It includes “expertise in using one’s whole body to express ideas and feelings (e.g., as an

actor, a mime, an athlete, or a dancer) and facility in using one’s hands to produce or transform things (e.g., as a craftsperson, sculptor, mechanic, or surgeon).”(1) Specific skills of Gardner’s bodily-kinesthetic intelligence would include coordination, balance, dexterity, strength, flexibility and speed.(2) To this list I would add focus, concentration and attention—often unconscious qualities of the mind, not just the body, that can be cultivated by athletics. In his fascinating new book The Social Animal, David Brooks

We feel fortunate at Allen-Stevenson to support a fantastic athletic program that is staffed by coaches and teachers who know how to work with a variety of boys. Good training brings out all their potential, whatever their athletic ability or interest.

Along with all the other worthwhile articles in this Lamplighter, I hope that you will enjoy reading about the variety, quality and depth of Allen-Stevenson’s program.

Making A Difference highlights some of the many ways in which people give to The Allen-Stevenson School.

The Importance of Community Allen-Stevenson places great value in its community.

A strong community also benefits the individuals within it. We’re lucky at Allen-Stevenson because there are many opportunities to get together at the School and to get to know the many people that make up our enthusiastic and diverse community.

Our all-school events include: the Picnic, the Ice Skating Party, the International Festival, and the Family Benefit.

This January, over 400 students, family members and faculty braved the cold to attend Allen-Stevenson's annual Ice Skating Party. Despite the freezing weather, students and parents thronged the rink and had a great time skating and socializing.

The 2011 International Festival was attended by over 500 people, with 28 different nations represented both by country and cuisine. This phenomenal community-wide event included various forms of entertainment, exotic foods, and information about the many cultures represented.

Parents Association volunteers, faculty and staff work hard to ensure that these all-school events are a great deal of fun for all. Helping out is another excellent way to meet the people within your community.

Relationship-building opportunities can also be found by attending some of the other many Allen-Stevenson events, which include: PA Parent Chats, the Fathers Dinner, concerts, plays, sporting events, science festivals, breakfasts, Alumni Reunions, and Grandparents & Special Friends Day. What a wonderful community to which we belong!

The Importance of the Scholarship Fund at Allen-Stevenson In our policy statement about community we say, “Allen-Stevenson promotes diverse perspectives, honest dialogue, and mutual respect.” Diversity comes in many forms, of course, among them race, ethnicity, family structure, religion, and socioeconomic background.

Although we believe that literally everyone at Allen-Stevenson contributes to a diverse community, our goal to educate deserving students from a variety of backgrounds is fundamental to the School’s mission. Though not all families need direct financial assistance for their sons to become or remain part of the Allen-Stevenson community, financial aid can make the difference. As the costs of an education increase, the need for financial aid funding becomes more essential.

At present, about 13% of our student body receives financial aid. Those families are given assistance with nontuition costs such as Alligator Soup, music lessons, tutoring, field trips, and community activities. The 2010-11 financial aid budget is $1,833,281, making the average grant $30,000 per student, among the highest of our peers.

The endowed Francis Bellows Allen Scholarship Fund is supported annually by the Parents Association, primarily through the Benefit, which was held this year on April 11, 2011. This year’s Benefit will yield nearly $350,000 for the Scholarship Fund. Because it is an endowed fund, the School spends only a small amount of the fund each year. That specific amount is 4% of the average of twelve quarters (in other words, an average of the endowment total taken at 12 times over a three-year period). This use of endowment dollars protects the School’s budget from drastic dips or peaks in the endowment because of volatility in the financial markets, and it also means that the amount we spend each year errs on the conservative side.

All of us at Allen-Stevenson were moved by the outpouring of support for financial assistance demonstrated by contributions made to the Scholarship Fund Benefit. Your commitment to the Scholarship Fund strengthens our entire school community and will benefit all of our students.

Several alumni reflections were included in a film shown at this year’s Benefit which will be available for viewing on the website this Spring. Alumni from 1943-2010 spoke about their love for the School because of their exposure and access to the arts, lifelong friendships, preparedness, and confidence. A sentiment shared by all of them was that Allen-Stevenson played an integral role in shaping them to be the men they are today.

We are grateful to the entire Allen-Stevenson community for recognizing the importance of making this education accessible to all families, thereby helping to shape the lives of so many more people.

around A-S KINDERGARTEN BEARS PROJECT The Kindergarten boys embarked on a collaborative project with their teachers and the Lower School librarian, Bonnie Tucker. The overall objective was for the boys to understand what the word "research" means and to complete a project using the skills of listening, observing and identifying facts.

For this exercise, the boys learned about four different types of bears: Polar Bears, Black Bears, Brown Bears/Grizzly Bears and Panda Bears. Materials used for research included: books (fiction and non-fiction), periodicals, videos and the Internet. Each boy recorded the information he learned about each bear into his own "Bears Book." During the project, boys strung "Bear Necklaces" with bear claws and beads. These necklaces were for each boy to wear throughout The Bears Project.

FIRST GRADERS LEARN TO USE VOICETHREAD All of the First Grade boys have been learning how to use VoiceThread, which allows them to comment on pictures as well as make drawn notations in real time.

Using this technology, the boys in 1R told "Water Stories" as part of their water curriculum. Erik Resurreccion, Head Teacher for 1R, took pictures of drawings the boys had made about water and created a VoiceThread for the class. The boys spoke about their drawings, and then listened to what everyone else had to say. This VoiceThread will be embedded on the 1R website.

Lower School SECOND GRADERS HOLD A POW WOW The Second Grade held a Pow Wow as part of its study of Native Americans. A Pow Wow is a gathering of tribes to share cultures, as explained by Ms. Kathy Allen's second grade class. To emulate a real Pow Wow the second grade boys were divided across the grade into different tribes, some of which included: the Algonquin and Iroquois Nations which consisted of five tribes: Mohawk, Onandaga, Oneida, Cayuga and Seneca.

There were many cultural activities for the “Native Americans� to enjoy. They could make medicine masks, which many of them said was one their favorite cultural activities during the Pow Wow. Working together, they created a longhouse, the type of home in which the Iroquois lived. Beautifully colored beads were threaded to make wampum necklaces. There were puzzles to build, which included a scene of Native Americans at a Thanksgiving Feast and a Native American poem.

The tribes also learned a game called snow snake, which is usually played with a stick (the snake) near a well-iced snow bank.

To learn more about the Native American tribes, the boys did some fact-finding and discovered the following: Some tribes wrote in shapes.

The Native Americans made cups out of horns.

The game of lacrosse originated from the Native Americans.

The Algonquins lived in wigwams, while the Iroquois lived in longhouses.

THIRD GRADE INVENTION CONVENTION Invention Convention, which took place on the first two Fridays in March, is an annual second and third grade event that is designed to promote problem-solving and creative-thinking skills in A-S boys. The boys are required to invent a new product or to develop a new or improved way of doing something. Each student follows a step-by-step process, which includes: learning about inventions; finding an idea; researching and planning; and constructing an invention.

P.S. 83 Visits A-S

Many weeks of concentrated effort in multiple disciplines went into the Fifth Grade’s creation of this entirely selfgenerated project. Support and encouragement was given by the Art Department in the making of props and store backdrops, and by the Music and Drama Departments in the development of dances, music, and character speeches. In Homeroom, boys wrote creative essays on a day in their life as an Ancient Athenian citizen. A tremendous amount of learning took place while boys found ways to showcase their particular talents.

The First Grade from P.S. 83 came to visit the Allen-Stevenson Sixth Graders. The students shared a special snack and played Bingo, Tic-Tac-Toe, Simon Says, and other fun games created by the Sixth Grade especially for their guests. Several Sixth Grade musicians then treated the students from P.S. 83, and the A-S Fifth and Sixth Grades, to a wonderful instrumental assembly.

The Middle School Geography Bowl

David de Rothschild Shares His Plastiki Adventures

The Blue Team, consisting of William Buehler, Trevor Jensen, Davis Lister, Ignacio Lopez-Gaffney, Kathan Mally, and Beau Peterson, defeated the Gold Team consisting of Daniel Belfer, Benjamin Edelson, Hugh Esterson, Justin Robbins, Nicholas Silberman, and Pepe Villamil. Mr. David Kersey h’98, who officiated the Bowl, asked the teams questions which covered a myriad of topics such as Mountain Ranges and Peaks, Oceans, Historical Geography, Native Animals, Spelling, and World Capitals.

David de Rothschild described to the Middle School boys at Allen-Stevenson his creation of and his journey on the Plastiki, a sailing vessel made out of reclaimed plastic bottles and other recycled PET plastic and waste products. He named the boat Plastiki in honor of Thor Heyerdahl's Kon Tiki balsa wood raft expedition across the Pacific in 1947.

David de Rothschild, who has been very involved in creating awareness of global environmental issues, sailed the boat from San Francisco, California, to Sydney, Australia, bringing attention to the effect of plastics on various areas of the Pacific Ocean. Scientists estimate that every year at least one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and sea turtles die when they entangle themselves in plastic pollution or ingest it. Fifteen billion pounds of plastic are produced in the U.S. every year, and only one billion pounds are recycled.

around A-S A New Student Newspaper, "The Unicorn’s Horn," is Launched The recent term has seen the creation of "The Unicorn’s Horn," our new student run school newspaper. The paper gives the Upper School a chance to write about something in the School and the world we care about or feel is significant.

Some background on the paper itself: the idea was conceived by the Editor in Chief, Justin Lambroza, towards the end of last year when he began to feel like students weren’t getting enough information; the newspaper now has twelve student writers and is advised by Seventh Grade English teacher, Ms. Pickens. We published our first full issue on February 8th and a preview issue just before winter break. We are hoping to get our next issue out no later than the first week of March. As a writer on the paper myself I couldn’t be happier with the way things are going so far.

Bill Konigsberg ’86 Speaks at a Monday Morning Meeting Mr. Konigsberg is a sports writer, the author of a young adult book, Out of the Pocket, and a writing professor at Arizona State University.

His talk at MMM focused on bullying, his feeling different and being treated differently at A-S, and his being gay.

Following MMM, the Upper School boys were given 20 minutes to reflect and write about Mr. Konigsberg’s talk. The boys then met in the Town Center to continue the conversation with him.

Mr. Konigsberg also met with faculty members to talk about various follow-up strategies they could use when speaking with the boys after this particular MMM. Mr. Konigsberg believes in the power of writing as part of the learning process and had created a series of questions the boys could consider as they reflected on his presentation.

Upper School Academic Bowl The 41st Annual Academic Bowl was held on January 10th. The Allen and Stevenson teams competed to answer various questions on a wide range of subjects, including history, math, geography, English, French, Spanish, music, sports, and many more. A new video feature was included this year. Mr. Pariseau officiated, for what will sadly be his last Academic Bowl, while Mr. Kersey and past faculty member, Mr. Holt, were the judges.

Congratulations to the Allen Team on its win! And, thank you to Mr. Pariseau for his many years of officiating this event.

Romeo and Juliet Actors from Allen-Stevenson and Nightingale-Bamford staged three marvelous performances of William Shakespeare's great tragedy of star-crossed teenage lovers, Romeo and Juliet. The play, set in post-Katrina New Orleans, was directed by Meg MacCary (NBS '87) and David Kersey h’98, and included several fight scenes and a masked Mardi Gras ball, all choreographed by Kristina King. Technical support was provided by a team of boys under the leadership of new faculty member, Stacy Donovan. In all, 45 Eighth and Ninth grade boys and girls were involved in the production.

The company of actors began work on the production in September during elective periods and on Saturdays. In addition, A-S eighth graders studied the play in their English classes with teacher Susan Lukas. Mr. Kersey felt that the classroom work made an enormous difference in the actors' understanding of the play and their mastery of the language. "How wonderful for them to be able to read it with Mrs. Lukas and then take it to the stage." Kersey, who has been directing Shakespeare at the School since 1981, added, "Shakespeare is a good choice for school productions because his plays have lots of parts, and besides, if you’re going to ask an eighth grader to memorize great chunks of language, it might as well be the bard’s!"

FATHERS DINNER WITH JOHN C. ALLMAN

HEAD OF TRINITY SCHOOL FEBRUARY 2011

I’m honored to be here. But I’ve also found it daunting to try to imagine what of value I might have to say to this accomplished audience of fathers and sons.

Of course, the very first topic I imagined for tonight was, unimaginatively enough, fathers and sons. And almost immediately, as I tried to pursue the topic, I was confronted with difficulties.

First of all, let me start with a painful confession. I am neither a distinguished son nor a distinguished father. From my father’s perspective, I was a good enough son -- but, for decades, he was troubled by my choice of profession, and was quite willing to share with me his perception that, by devoting myself to teaching and coaching, I was squandering the expensive independent education he had financed. And I am confident that, if my wife and three sons were here tonight, they could speak at length about my many limitations as a father.

Guessing that their commentary would not be sufficiently uplifting for this occasion, I have chosen not to share their views with you.

Despite these difficulties, refusing to be deterred by my undistinguished record as a son or a father, I persisted and asked myself what insight I could possibly give to the topic of fathers and sons, and I suddenly realized that, while I have received no formal training in fatherhood or sonship, I am a trained English teacher, with degrees from prestigious universities proving that I know how to read. Surely, I could find a book about fathers and sons and share its uplifting wisdom with you.

So, like any traditionally educated English major, I started with Shakespeare…. and quickly realized that the bard must have had an unhappy family life, for he certainly does not offer many positive parenting portraits – his most noteworthy parent portrait is that of dysfunctional daddy Lear, whose misunderstanding of his three children destroys him, his family, and his kingdom.

Then I tried Dickens…. No success there….think Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Pip….

Dickens is preoccupied with children literally and figuratively orphaned from their parents.

I turned to American Lit – William Faulkner, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Alice Walker….and found tales of incest and domestic rape.

In short, everywhere I turned, I found a literature of family dysfunction, confirming the insight and artistic implications of Leo Tolstoy’s observation that “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” Despairing that I could find exemplary parents and children in literature, I turned to popular culture and wasn’t much more successful. Exploring movie possibilities, for example, I realized that there is a thriving subgenre of gangster shows, from The Godfather through The Sopranos and The Road to Perdition, devoted to the theme of fathers corrupting children.

In seeking material for this talk, what I had stumbled across is one of the great challenges of parenthood, and that is the absence of models – certainly publicly shared models that offer us ways to be good fathers and sons.

For better and for worse, depending on our circumstances, I think most of us end up relying on our own experiences as sons to guide our efforts as fathers, and these experiences can be empowering and limiting.

As an aside -- ultimately, I found one movie that expressed a positive truth about fathers and sons that rang true to me, a movie that many of the younger sons here tonight may know – the 2003 movie Finding Nemo. How many of you remember the movie? It features the adventurous son, Nemo; and his Dad, Marlin, the over protective clownfish.

To me, the story of Marlin and Nemo captures the most poignant moments I’ve enjoyed as a father, the moments when my own children’s acts of courage had made me mindful of just how much more daring they are than I was or am, and I have been able to delight in the realization that genetics are not destiny, that my children are not doomed to repeat the failings and mistakes of their father. In the case of my eldest son, for example, I have marveled at the poise and skill he displayed in musical theater, displaying onstage talents unlike anything I could have ever possibly imagined for myself.

Similarly, I have admired the strength of my middle son (very different from his older brother) as he has travelled across the Northeast for the past two summers to compete against all comers at dozens of lacrosse recruiting camps. Their example has inspired me and humbled me. My sons have educated me about the meaning growth through challenge, just as Nemo educated his father about risk and courage.

Rather than try to continue to pontificate on parenting, using cartoons and clownfish to drive home my insights, I’d like to talk about something I know a little more about -schools. Specifically, I’d like to disclose to you The Secret To Successful Schooling, and, believe it or not, that secret will lead us to one profoundly useful insight about the microcommunity we call a family. For someone like me, who entered school at five years old and has never left, schools have been a second home; my classmates, a band of brothers and sisters; my teachers, another set of parents, and so, to me, it seems natural to look to schools to discover truths about family.

To uncover this secret, I’d like to conduct a thought experiment with you right now.

Picture yourself at a school known nationally for its academic prowess, populated with students of proven academic ability, intellectual curiosity, and tenacity. Its reputation as an academic powerhouse is legendary; the average SAT of its seniors hovers in the mid-2000s,

and, year in and year out, its graduates matriculate to the finest colleges in the country.

Unashamedly demanding in its academic standards, it boldly describes itself in its mission statement as an academy of "exacting inquiry." No soft talk of nurture and care in this school's vision of itself.

Picture yourself in such a school. Let's call it The School.

Into this picture introduce a respected psychiatrist of national prominence. He has been invited onto the campus of The School to answer the following question: what factors have the greatest influence on the success and happiness of the students in this highly challenging academic environment?

To answer this question, this psychiatrist spends weeks on campus, interviewing hundreds of students, parents, and teachers. In addition, the entire school community completes surveys assessing a wide range of variables, including common categories such as race or religion or income as well as other variables such as self-esteem, feelings about the future, IQ, and grade-point average.

What do you think such a study would reveal?

What most determines students’ success and happiness at a school filled with the best and brightest? What answer would you give?

What do you think is most important to success and happiness in high school?

As you may have guessed by now, the scenario I've just presented is based on fact, not fiction. The school is Exeter; the psychiatrist is ADD expert Ned Hallowell, an alumnus of Exeter.

What are the keys to success and happiness in a school filled with the Best and the Brightest – a school like Exeter, a school not unlike Trinity or Allen-Stevenson? IQ? G.P.A.? Here is what Hallowell discovered: “From the huge amount of data, one factor emerged as the most telling: connectedness.

Those students who did well had it, while those who didn't lacked it. “We defined connectedness as a feeling of being a part of something larger than yourself...On every measure of mental health and happiness that we used, as well as every measure of achievement, the students who did the best were the connected students. Those who were in distress were the disconnected.

“Specifically, the connected students were the least depressed, had the highest self-esteem, felt most comfortable with their families, were most positive about their education, used the least drugs or alcohol, felt the least stress, and had the highest grade-point averages.”

healthy family with happy, resilient children: “In assessing connectedness, what mattered was the adolescent's perception, not some concrete prescription of what makes for a connected family or school. There was no unique formula for creating feelings of connectedness. No one kind of school was best.

All that mattered was that the student felt connected. Both parents did not have to live in the same home, nor did the family have to eat dinner together. The family simply had to do whatever it needed to do to create the feeling of connectedness.” (Edward Hallowell, Connect) Hallowell’s thesis is that the key to success and happiness, on campus or off, for children and adults, in schools and homes, is connectedness -- the feeling that you are a part of something larger than yourself -- a friendship, a marriage, a team, a school, an activity you love, a country, a cause, a set of ideals or principles, or a belief system, like a religion.

It is the sum total of these connections to things larger than yourself that creates the feeling of connectedness -- the sense that you are an important part of something that really matters.

In times of crisis, it is this sense of connectedness, or transcendence, that sustains us when we suffer loss, and amid the routines of everyday life, it is this same sense of connectedness that redeems the mundane. Ultimately, Hallowell’s findings suggest that we don’t have to choose between self and others, that self-fulfillment derives from an attentiveness to others. In this way, Hallowell offers compelling secular support for religion’s repeated insistence that our highest calling as humans is to connect with others, to subordinate our needs and desires to the needs of others, to dedicate the self to transcendent purposes beyond the self.

Interestingly, when I ask Trinity alumni to tell me what they have valued most about their Trinity experience, they most often talk about the human dimensions of their Trinity experience, about wonderful relationships with their classmates and their teachers, especially teachers who lavished students with individual attention, both inside and beyond the classroom. And I would guess that Headmaster Trower hears similar reports from his Alumni.

From my perspective, connectedness is the hallmark of a great school, and of a strong family.

INTERACTIVE DISPLAYS

DESIGNED TO HIGHLIGHT ATHLETIC TEAM PHOTOS An exciting new feature has appeared in the Main Hall of Allen-Stevenson right outside the Nurse’s office. Two interactive displays have been installed to allow the A-S community to search through athletic team photos. The photos are from the current school year going back to the 1960s showing the history of athletics at Allen-Stevenson.

This project came about because there were a large number of photos of athletic teams lining the stairwells that had to be removed when the School underwent its renovation several years ago. These photos were put into storage to await a decision on how best to display them when the renovation was complete. It was decided that an electronic display would be the best choice, since it provided for a means to continually add to the collection.

Allen-Stevenson has been working with RedyRef, which produces displays for buildings and directories for college campuses. Redy Ref adapted its product to meet the needs of Allen-Stevenson.

The interactive displays consist of two screens displaying a continual slideshow of team photos.

A person can pause it to search for specific photos by either NAME, SPORT or DECADE, thus bringing up the team picture or pictures.

The beautiful wood display cases have been designed by the maintenance department at Allen-Stevenson both to look aesthetically pleasing and to keep with the design of the School and the surrounding hallway.

EPA’S ENERGY STAR FOR THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR Allen-Stevenson has been awarded the prestigious Energy Star by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This is the third consecutive year that the School has achieved this award. You can visit the Energy Star website to see our building profile.

Thanks to a generous gift from an anonymous donor, the School completed a state of the art lighting control project in 2010 consisting of dimming fluorescent fixtures, occupancy sensors, and daylight harvesting.

This new system is allowing us to save between 40 and 60 percent on our energy usage per room, and we are enormously grateful for this gift.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION Physical education at Allen-Stevenson plays an integral role in developing the whole child. We promote the health and well being of all students by offering multiple opportunities for physical movement. Students enjoy physical education in our gymnasium, dance in the Landis Assembly Hall, and outdoor play on the School roof or on Randall’s Island. It is our belief that boys who are healthy and active have a greater focus in the classroom and thus a richer learning experience.

Our Kindergarten program channels the endless energy of five-year olds into creative expressions of movement. We encourage the boys to discover how their bodies can move: focusing on directionality, levels, spatial awareness, balance, agility, and speed. Our goal is for them to participate in a variety of loco-motor skills and body management skills. Through these types of activities we not only develop the body and mind, but we also establish the foundation to build social skills.

Developing social skills is a theme that runs throughout our physical education and athletics program. Through movement and collaborative games, we begin to build a greater understanding and appreciation for teamwork and sportsmanship.

These activities teach respect, responsibility, cooperation, collaboration, and communication.

All of our boys in grades Kindergarten through second have physical education five days a week. Each student enjoys a balance of classes in the gymnasium, roof, Landis Assembly Hall, Central Park or Randall’s Island.

First and Second Grade boys leave our program with the ability to use a variety of manipulative skills. These include tossing, catching, and kicking. Also in their repertoire is the ability to combine loco-motor and non loco-motor skills into movement themes, for example, supporting body weight, bridges, and balancing.

We expect the boys to be able to perform basic gymnastic skills such as animal walks, body rolls, and simple balances. Lastly, all of our boys in grades first and second use their skills to participate in modified games that require dodging, running, evading, and stopping.

As the boys reach Third and Fourth Grade they begin to refine their movements and skills. Third graders partake in a variety of lead up games that assist in the development of sport specific skills. For example, basketball (dribble, pass and shoot), football (catching and throwing), baseball (throwing, catching and hitting), and soccer (passing and receiving). These skills represent just a glimpse of the many skills our third graders are expected to perform. As a natural progression, our fourth graders participate in a Sports Education Program. The boys are placed on teams and asked to take full responsibility for the success of the team. Although the games are played on modified fields and with some modification to the rules, each team member is expected to assist in the team’s success. This means learning the skills and strategies for the sport, being respectful and responsible, communicating effectively with teammates and teachers, and building an overall sense of fun and excitement for the team.

ATHLETICS Beginning in Fifth Grade, an AllenStevenson boy immerses himself into the after school athletics program. Two and a half hours a day, four days a week, the boys hone their skills and fitness in a variety of sports. Choosing from football, soccer, wrestling, basketball, ice hockey, track, lacrosse, and baseball, every boy has an opportunity for success.

Fifth Grade boys participate in an intrascholastic athletics program. They choose one sport per season and practice and play games amongst themselves. This is their introduction to the responsibilities that come with playing after school sports at A-S. They learn valuable lessons about time management, equipment management, travel, and most importantly, safety. Although the practices and games are fun, it is important for this group of boys to understand the rules and expectations that come with being members of our athletics program. As

sixth graders, the teams practice in anticipation for games against peer schools. Practices and expectations rise in the eyes of the players and coaches. With these expectations comes a sense of balance and appropriateness with regard to competition. While we want our boys to experience competition and how to prepare for it, there is a clear understanding amongst teachers that this is a time for every boy to have opportunity and success. To that end we do not cut, and we strive to get each member of the team meaningful playing time. Building confidence and self-esteem is a major goal at this level. Through practice, participation, and encouragement, we believe every boy can feel good about their experience as an A-S athlete.

Upper School athletics provides every player the opportunity to find a good fit as a competitor. As is tradition in most schools, our boys participate on either a varsity or junior varsity team. While both teams play competitive games and have similar schedules, varsity coaches are more selective with playing time than junior varsity. However, each team is conducted in such a way that we continue to build social, motor, and psychomotor skills along with a greater understanding of strategy and technique. It is important to note that throughout the time a student is in the Upper School, he has the opportunity to participate in an intramural program. This type of program provides vigorous activity without the fierce competition amongst schools.

It is yet another way that we account for the development of the whole child.

We believe every boy develops at his own pace, therefore, it is important to offer a variety of experiences that build character, courage, and confidence.

WELLNESS Our Wellness Center is the hub for equipping our students with the knowledge and skills they need to lead more healthful lives by choosing nutritious diets and being physically active for life. The Wellness Program considers the health and well-being of the whole child – the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual dimensions.

Upper School students participate in a dynamic program of strength training, nutrition, and speed, agility, and quickness training. The boys are introduced to the misconceptions and facts about strength training.

The importance of safety and proper technique is paramount to the success of the program.

A typical week in the Wellness Program includes strength training with free weights, life fitness strength machines, TRX bands, agility ladders and hurdles, bio-mechanics of sprinting and running, and discussions on either minerals, vitamins, proteins and fats.

DANCE Dance class is fun. When I first started teaching at AllenStevenson I was certain that I was going to spend my days trying to convince boys of the validity of that statement. Building a dance curriculum in an all-boys school is a daunting experience. But now, three years later, as I walk into rehearsal for Allen-Stevenson’s dance company I realize the gentlemen of A-S no longer need convincing.

Dance class is a place where intense physical activity combines with artistic expression. Ideally, an A-S gentleman will come out of the dance program as a well-rounded athlete with a strong knowledge of dance fundamentals. The curriculum is vigorous yet enjoyable and incorporates everything from flexibility exercises and core training to dance vocabulary, dance games, and dance combinations.

In the Lower School, dance class focuses mainly on sustaining freedom of movement and finding a sense of rhythm. Throughout First and Second Grades, we concentrate on maintaining flexi-

We play an array of games that combine a “dance like no one is watching” philosophy with exercises that work on beat identification. When the boys enter Third Grade they are ready to start building on the ‘8’ count by learning basic choreographed combinations.

As the snow began to fall this January, rehearsals were heating up for the winter cast of the 2011 Allen-Stevenson Dance Crew (ASDC). Select boys from the Fifth and Sixth Grades worked tirelessly after school perfecting moves for the first show of the ASDC season. Rehearsals began in early January on a show that remained top secret until the velvet

In my short time here at A-S I’ve managed to learn a few crucial lessons when it comes to teaching boys the art of dance. Ballet isn’t that bad if you are allowed to plié to a Michael Jackson song. Freeze dance heals all wounds.

CURRENT COACHES We asked our coaches “How has athletics or being physically active helped shape your life?” Here are excerpts from some of their responses: RICH ALIFANO Athletics has been an important part of my life.

Through my participation in athletics I developed life-long friendships, an appreciation for being physically active, and an understanding of how to win and lose gracefully.

PHIL AMPLO Playing sports has played a major role in my life. After my father died when I was twelve years old, sports provided me with an outlet for my frustrations and kept me from focusing on my situation. Playing sports, especially hockey, is what ultimately led to my career choice of coaching and teaching physical education. As an adult I still continue to play hockey, basketball, and softball which all provide me with a way to stay fit and healthy.

ANTONIO D'ITRI I was not the most physically active teenager, but when the need to get in shape and change my life came, two things were there for me: running and martial arts. Although I was probably the slowest boy in my school, my high school track coach gave me a chance and allowed me to run and train with the team. He encouraged me whole-heartedly. I have never forgotten the opportunity Mr. Mangione gave

me that year. Since then I have run 9 marathons and over 120 road races. I have been training martial arts for over 13 years and now hold a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and other belts in other styles. Physical fitness has become an integral part of my life and even though I never excelled at team sports, I found individual sports allowed me to be confident, dedicated and focused in my everyday life. Without athletics and physical fitness I would not have become the person I am today.

BILLY DRANSFIELD Athletics has played a major role in my life and how I live each day. I began being physically active at a very young age and never stopped. I really enjoy being active, because it helps me to feel good about myself and to keep healthy. I took great pleasure in athletics as a boy; I played football at a very young age and continued in high school. My favorite sport is lacrosse, which I played in high school and in college. I’m very active today and enjoy participating in many different types of activities, with my friends, boys at A-S, and my family.

MERRILL HUGHES It has helped shape my life in many ways. It has led me to many places, introduced me to many people and eventually led to my teaching career. Athletics was my way of being creative and healthy, having competed in various sports since early childhood. To this day a very large group of my friends and acquaintances are from earlier sports, health and athletic endeavors. I'm thankful for the many experiences in my life that were athletically initiated. I look forward to continuing in my athletic pursuits for as long as possible.

FRANK PEDUTO I played sports throughout my childhood and teenage years. I have many great memories of playing baseball, football, and hockey, both recreationally and competitively. My true passion for being physically active did not happen until high school. I struggled with my weight in high school, but I had one great coach who introduced me to weight lifting.

My father purchased my first weight set and within three months I lost 75 lbs from weight lifting and dieting. From that moment on I fell in love with exercising and becoming as strong as I could be. In my second year of college I decided to become a personal trainer and worked at Equinox where I was able to help a lot of people achieve their fitness goals. As a trainer I knew I wanted to help people become physically active and live a healthier lifestyle.

Being physically active is a big part of my life and I do my best to share my passion with others.

ROB WISEMAN When I think of all the benefits from being physically active over the course of my life, I would have to put my personal health as the number one reward. I have been playing basketball for over thirty years and because of my enjoyment with competing, I have maintained a healthy lifestyle.

Furthermore, I am happily involved in coaching my daughter’s basketball team as well as my son’s soccer team.

PAST COACHES RICK COLUMBO (rcolumbo@gcds.net): I am currently the Head of the Middle School at the Greenwich Country Day School. I also teach 6th grade math, coach Girls Varsity hockey and lacrosse, baseball and softball. As my first true job out of college, I will always remember fondly my days at AllenStevenson. The spirit, joy and energy of the children and the love and friendship of my colleagues made A-S the ideal place to spend my days.

I also served as a JV football coach at West Babylon High School from 1990 through 1995. I served as a JV lacrosse coach from 1990 through 1995 at West Babylon, where I later served as the Head Varsity lacrosse coach from 1996 through 2003. I now work as a boys lacrosse official when I'm not watching my daughter, Maggie, (14) or my son, Brendan, (17) play sports.

CAESAR FABELLA (cfabella@polyprep.org): I am currently a member of the History Department at Poly Prep Country Day School. I am on my tenth year of teaching there; I went to Poly after A-S. I currently teach Grade 6 History which is Ancient History - the same curriculum as I used to teach at A-S. Most of the boys at the reunion remembered fondly the weekly Met Museum tours we made on Wednesdays after lunch.

(lamonti@loswego.k12.or.us): For the past 4 years, I have been the Director of Athletics for Lakeridge High School (with 1,100 kids) in Lake Oswego, Oregon, a suburb of Portland, Oregon. I moved out here 15 years ago, taught English for 8 years and coached Boys Varsity Lacrosse team to 5 state championships.

In my tenure as Co-Head Coach, we had over ten All-Americans and a number who went on to have successful careers in D1 Programs. Our most notable graduate is Connor Martin (aka ‘Con Bro Chill’ of YouTube and internet fame or infamy) who graduated from Chapman University and was drafted by the Denver Outlaws of the MLL. He is now playing indoor for the Colorado Mammoth of the NLL.

(patlappin42@gmail.com): I am currently Executive Vice President of Hampshire House (www.150CPS.com) as well as Managing Partner of my real estate company (www.avalonpartnersltd.com). My fondest memories are those that involve the family style meals where we were able to interact with the students in a less structured atmosphere. To trade jokes, share stories, and enjoy each other’s company in a purely organic way. We were all able to relax, break bread and form true fellowships.

BILLY MCBRIDE (btmcbride@amherst.edu): I am the Assistant Athletic Director and Director of Diversity and Inclusion at Amherst College. I earned Coach of the Year for women’s basketball during the 2000–2001. I serve as a liaison to the admissions office, dean’s office, Center for Community Engagement and human resources office. In the early portion of my career, I succeeded as an athlete in both college basketball and professional football. I now do a lot of public speaking and community outreach for the university; recently I spoke about George Bellows’ boxing imagery in the artist’s lithographs at Amherst’s Mead Art Museum.

TIMOTHY NICHOLS H '78 (cinclax@aol.com), former history teacher and lacrosse coach, lives in Annapolis, MD. He continues to coach lacrosse privately and is writing a book about the roots of the Israeli-Palestinian situation (covering the years of 1868-1939). In addition to teaching and coaching the A-S lacrosse team to nine lacross league championships, Tim was also Director of Admissions for eight years and advisor to student publications (A-S News, Yearbook). My A-S days were the happiest years of my life.

CARMINE SKRINE (cskrine@gmail.com): Presently, I am teaching Physical Education at Monroe Academy of Visual Arts and Design on the James Monroe Campus in the Bronx, New York. In addition, I am also JV Coach for the Monroe Eagles Baseball Program.

DOMINICK TRALLI (domfdny@ne.rr.com): I recently retired from the NYC Fire Department where I was a Hazardous Materials Specialist in Haz-Mat Company One (a city wide Special Operations Unit).

In January, my wife, Rhonda and I moved to New Hampshire to begin a new chapter in life.

Seeing former students at the reunion was great. I thought that I would have trouble putting a name to the face, but I was able to connect both pretty quickly.

DANIEL VENEZIA (danvenezia@verizon.net): I am currently the owner and CEO of Every Boys Dream, a baseball program here in New York City.

At Every Boys Dream we teach youngsters more than how to hit and field better. We focus on the intangible life skills that these boys will need long after they stop playing baseball such as honesty, respect, sportsmanship, teamwork, hustle and resiliency.

In addition to running camps and clinics and giving lectures and private lessons, I am also a personal trainer.

Allen-Stevenson has a tradition of teaching boys how to become men. The coaches are a great group of guys who really care about developing their players. I am glad I was able to be a part of an exceptional school -- one that sets its standards high. We know that when children have high standards they have an opportunity to achieve extraordinary results. It is evident that Allen-Stevenson is doing a great job at creating quality human beings.

I enjoyed all nine years.

2011 Scholarship Fund Benefit at 583 Park Avenue Thank you to the hundreds of members of the AllenStevenson community who supported our Parents Association Scholarship Fund Benefit, “Oh, the Places They’ll Go!” The evening’s program, incorporating entertainment by alumni, was designed to highlight the diverse accomplishments of many of the School’s alumni throughout the years.

A fabulous time was had by all, and the event raised a recordbreaking amount of money for the Scholarship Fund.

Special thanks to all of our Benefit volunteers, especially event chairs Pam Esterson, Pamela Mitchell and Bari Schlesinger, PA President Marie Bitetti, and Scholarship Fund Chairs Josh and Marjorie Harris and Dan and Nanna Stern whose leadership and generosity were essential to the evening’s success. We are grateful to the Scholarship Fund Committee for underwriting the expenses of the evening and inspiring hundreds to make donations to the event. The art of technology teacher, ADAM SHECTER, was in a show this spring, called "Borderland" at 420 Broome Street. It is a 24-hour broadcast of public access TV shows, and included segments from his animated art videos. Adam will also have his second solo show at the Eleven Rivington Gallery at the end of May. Controversy is the catchword of the season with November elections around the corner. Appropriately enough, English teachers, Susan Lukas, Alan Cashdollar and Carol Pickens have had the eighth graders discussing the ongoing dispute about the building of a mosque near Ground Zero. They have read articles on both sides, analyzed the often inflammatory and slanted editorials that have been written on the subject, and, finally, they have written position papers reflecting their own views. Ms. Lukas has been struck by the boys' open-minded, changeable responses to the argument often in the face of strongly held views at home. "I've heard from parents who, themselves, have been impressed and surprised at their son’s ability to support an opinion that differs from their own with regard to the mosque debate."

Meanwhile, the Third Grade, led by teachers Kristin Filling, Abby Levin and Andre Duncan, have had Robin Hood on trial (in absentia) for stealing from the rich and…well, you know the rest… The proceeding took place in the Assembly Hall with third grade advocates speaking for and against the accused and the First and Second Grade sitting as jury. All was presided over by the formidable Mr. Duncan, who stands six foot seven. When the jury returned to their classrooms on the third floor to deliberate, there was apparently overwhelming support for acquittal, and Robin dodged yet another bullet. As one third grader put it, "He took from the rich, who had too much, and gave to the poor, who had too little, and now everyone has what he needs and it’s fair."

Not everyone has roiled in controversy. The Sixth Grade boys, dance instructor, Kristina King, and I have been marching up Fifth Avenue to Nightingale every Monday and Friday afternoon since September to rehearse a musical version of Alice in Wonderland. We go up this week. Those of you in the class of 1997 (Grease), and those of you who followed, will remember all the pre-teen madness.

James Buff ’59 died on November 17, 2010. Classmate Andrew Burger remembers him as an avid chess player.

Huntington Lyman ’39 of Niantic, CT, and Falmouth, MA, “shuffled off this mortal coil on November 17, 2010,” according to a death notice in the New York Times. “He was the beloved husband of San, father of Huntington and Charlotte, and grandfather of Christian. A graduate and devoted alumnus of Groton School and Yale University, Tony was dedicated to his family, the Old Black Point community, poetry, song, and crossword puzzles. We will remember his gentle manners, his kindness, his indomitable spirit, and his buoyant sense of humor. A Memorial Service will be held in June in Connecticut.”

Lowe has been the South Florida Sun Sentinel’s first and only editorial cartoonist for the past twenty-seven years. His work has won numerous awards; he has also been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. His cartoons are syndicated nationally and he has been writing an award-winning blog, The Lowe-Down, since 2008. Tim Leonard '76 (tfl@coralwave.com) wrote by email: “My wife and I have just returned from a grand adventure that we’ve been planning for over a year which coincides with my 50th birthday. I felt we should do something memorable for the event of becoming a ‘demi-centenarian’! Starting in January, we sailed on a cruise ship from San Francisco through Hawaii, Polynesia, Tonga, and New Zealand, and then down the east coast of New Zealand, ending up for a few days in Sydney.

We were very lucky we didn’t encounter much tectonic activity since we visited many potentially active sights. The most active was New Zealand’s newest volcano, White Island. It was billowing sulfur gases 150 yards from our balcony and made you think about what would happen if it had a really big belch. Even the Tasman Sea, which is notoriously rough, was kind to us. The only rough weather we had was going from Tasmania (yes we saw the devil) to Melbourne. The Bass Strait was being hit by an extra-tropical typhoon and that made the swells about 8 meters. The Captain asked us to stay comfy in our suites and our verandah furniture was all tied down. It wasn’t really bad since we were lying on our bed, watching the sea from our windows - kind of exciting actually. In that position it was a lot like lying in a hammock swaying in the breeze. It gave me time to start work on my 3,000+ photos that I’d taken.”

1950s Samuel Riker ’51 died on July 16, 2010, in Bermuda, where he had been living for over 40 years.

Challenge on July 26, 2010 in conditions described as “exciting.” Of 34 swimmers in the two mile event, Adrian finished third with a time of 38 minutes while Tom finished 23rd overall and first in his age group with a time of 59 minutes. Tom noted: “Adrian and I both swim regularly at Chelsea Piers. Only recently did we discover that we also now have A-S in common.”

!"#$%&' %(7+ Roberto De Vido ’78 (robertodevido@onemanbandproductions.com) lives in Kanagawa, Japan, and is founder of Near Futures, which provides community development assessment and solutions services to communities and businesses in Japan.

He writes occasionally for The Japan Times Online, Tucson Sentinel, and his blog, www.politcomix.net. He and his family lived through the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

“The quake was big where we live (an hour or so southwest of Tokyo) but of course nowhere near as big as up near the epicenter, and there was no quake damage to our home or in our village (or really, in Tokyo itself). I had a chance to go up to Sendai (the major city in the quake zone) a few days afterwards, to shepherd a Finnish television journalist around (driving, fixing, interpreting) and the devastation was stunning. You've seen it on TV, but of course in person it was very different.

After the quake the reactor problems emerged, and when it appeared the plant operator was not in control of the situation, and unwilling to discuss the worst case scenario(s), my wife and I (and many others) decided it might be safer and more comfortable for the kids if we spent some time a bit further away from any cloud of radioactivity that might emerge from the site. We had offers of refuge from friends as far as New York and Stockholm, but we decided that for the time being we'd stick closer to home, and we moved to a friend's place in Kyoto (an additional 500km further southwest).

Mizue brought the kids on the train immediately, and I followed with the car and a bunch of stuff a couple of days later. I was there nearly a week; Mizue and the kids nearly two. [The move (not ours specifically, but leaving Tokyo in general) was a subject of controversy within the foreign community here, and I wrote something else, for the Japan Times.

The kids are fine ... Saya is much too young (just turned three) to have any real understanding of what's gone on, and Taiyo (coming up on six) understands in the abstract, but hasn't really seen his life affected, so he's fine as well. It's been good to get them out of the aftershock zone (there have been nearly 1,000 major aftershocks since the main quake) and our area will see rolling power blackouts for at least a year, it seems, since the nuclear power plant was an important part of the Tokyo area

power supply, so it's been good to avoid that hassle as well. We're all back home now, and Saya's first day of school (ever!) is today.”

Battalion and just returned from Afghanistan at the end of October. In the Army, commanding duty is rotated with staff duty. Currently, Chris is serving as the Assistant Operations Officer for 1/75. Colin McCabe '90 (colin@choptsalad.com) has been dubbed the "Willy Wonka of salads" by Edible Manhattan, a magazine published by his classmate, Brian Halweil ’90. McCabe co-founded Chop't, a chain of restaurants that primarily serves salads.

Colin shared his enthusiasm for healthful eating with the A-S boys at a Monday Morning Meeting with Monica Matthew, Food & Nutrition Director at Allen-Stevenson. Steve McCauley '96 (steven.mccauley@gmail.com) has moved to Washington, DC, where he is working as an architect librarian on a contract for the EPA. He's part of a team redesigning the EPA's website to make it more user-friendly and more logical.

Maximilian Warncke ’99 (maximilian.warncke@gmail.com), a sailor and merchant marine, just returned from the waters off Japan with Military Sealift Command – which ended up giving relief to the Japanese after the recent earthquake. He reported, “We were 200 miles south of Tokyo-wan when the earthquake hit. We headed up the coast of Honshu so that once we got the state department OK our helicopters could start to bring relief shore side.

The sea state was unbelievable; we were forced to navigate around Conex boxes [40’ portable storage units], TEUs [20’ x 40’ transport boxes], pieces of houses, and upended and abandoned ships. It certainly made underway replenishment with our aircraft carrier interesting.

To make matters worse we received intelligence that the nuclear power plant in Fukushima was having problems. We were forced to take defensive measures including turning out our chemical biological radiological defense CBRD gear. It is training we have but don't ever want to use."

Max was originally on a billet crossing the Pacific Ocean from Washington state to Sasebo, Japan, by way of Hawaii and Guam. In May, Max is shipping out to the Baltic. Then, he’s coming back to finish his thesis for a masters at SUNY Maritime College.

“It is extremely exciting for me to know that these boys have continued to wrestle after leaving Allen-Stevenson,” said Glenn Rodriguez who trained them all as wrestlers while at Allen-Stevenson. About a third of the wrestlers at A-S continue in secondary school, and several wrestlers from the class of 2008 will be wrestling in college programs next year. To become a national qualifier, athletes must place in either their state tournament or the New England tournament, depending on what school they attend. To qualify is a notable accomplishment.

Everyone wrestled hard in the national tournament, with two A-S alums coming within one match of reaching all-American status.

Theophilus Agbi and Danny Evangelakos both lost close matches that decided whether they would place within the top eight wrestlers in their weight class.

One wrestler from this group, William Evangelakos (brother of Danny and teammate of Elliot Frank), has one year remaining at Suffield Academy.

(knottb@horacemann.org) will be attending Stanford University in the fall where he was recruited to the gymnastics team (ranked the #1 college men’s gymnastics team). Brian placed 20th All Around in the U.S. after two days of competition at the Junior Olympic Nationals 2010. He won the USA Gymnastics Joseph Chichetti Memorial Award as the top senior gymnast in New York State; he received a scholarship with it.

Coach Rodriguez, who has run the wrestling program at AllenStevenson since 2004, is very enthusiastic about the sport.

“Wrestling is a rigorous sport, which tests a boy’s focus, strength and spirit. It is the ultimate character builder!”

Coach Rodriguez says that our alumni inspire current A-S wrestlers by showing them what’s possible through their participation in the Allen-Stevenson Wrestling Program. When Mr. Rodriguez began in 2004 there were 20 boys wrestling in the Middle and Upper Schools.

Now there are 65. Mr. Rodriguez is also bringing along Lower School boys in his after school and summer program, Grapplin’ Gorillas. A-S alumni, including several pictured above, return to help coach the summer camp.
