Release Date: September 11, 2012 Ton Koopman: harpsichord, organ Catherine Manson: violin Paolo Pandolfo: viola da gamba Mike Fentross: lute BUXTEHUDE: VII Suonate à due Violino & Viola da gamba, con Cembalo Opera secunda The first recording of Buxtehude’s complete works is steadily approaching completion; this is the final volume of the chamber music and all that remains are a number of vocal challenges! Buxtehude’s trio sonatas form a unique repertoire—due to their formidable technical and musical demands, they have rarely been recorded. Although there are occasional touches of Corelli to be heard, the music is, above all, quintessentially Buxtehudian. It was a phenomenal experience to record these sonatas!

Hallé Stig Anderson, Yvonne Howard, Clive Bayley, Egils Silins: vocal soloists Hallé Orchestra Sir Mark Elder: conductor WAGNER: Die Walküre (complete opera) “[The Hallé’s concert performance of Die Walküre was] a two-day emotional journey that left me feeling torn apart. Act I was captivating and potent; Act II fiercely moving; Act III enough to make one rush from the hall and plunge in a Manchester canal. The gigantic orchestral climax interrupting Wotan’s Farewell was as convulsively emotional as I could want it. Subtleties of orchestral shading and balance went by like an express train. The conducting was inspired; the immense structure cohered; one looks forward to the issue of the live recording happily being made.” — The Sunday Times Following their Gramophone Award-winning recording of Götterdammerung, the Hallé under Sir Mark Elder announces its long-awaited release of the live recording of Wagner’s Die Walküre, taken from the acclaimed Manchester International Festival 2011 performance at Bridgewater Hall. Thought by many to be Wagner’s greatest opera, Die Walküre is a psychological drama charting the full range of emotions in music that is powerful, tender, and everything in between, with orchestral and vocal writing that perfectly displays the master craftsman at work.

Much of the credit goes to Jochum who conducts a quite blinding interpretation from first to last, and to … Astrid Varnay’s fearsome Ortrud, vocally and dramatically superb, and to Hermann Uhde’s biting, forceful, intensely sung Telramund … Then Birgit Nilsson … sings Elsa with such clarity and beauty that it is no wonder she created something of a sensation … Wolfgang Windgassen … is in his finest voice, which means he is a Lohengrin to cherish … As if that wasn’t enough, Fischer-Dieskau … is a Herald of extraordinary presence … As a whole the performance, from first chord to last—in remarkably wide-ranging mono—is one to treasure.” — Gramophone, July 2005

In 2009, the periodical Opernwelt voted her Newcomer of the Year in the female singer category, and she received the ECHO Klassik award for her first song CD Verwandlung the following year. Christiane worked with conductor Jonathan Cohen in the Glyndebourne Touring Opera in the 2010/11 season. They had such good rapport from the start that they decided to record an aria CD with his Arcangelo ensemble in London, a group of top young musicians. On the CD, Amoretti, love is examined in all its facets. Alongside arias by Mozart and Gluck, there are two lesser-known ones by their French contemporary André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry, one of which is presented on CD for the first time! With this compilation Christiane takes the listener on an emotional roller coaster ride that begins with a tender plea and leads—via yearning, tenderness, pain, and despair—to the final “Adieu.”

Sándor Végh

Vegh in Hungary

Violinist, chamber musician, conductor, and teacher Sándor Végh was one of the most important musicians of the 20th century. The determining factor in Végh’s becoming a conductor was his experience at the Marlboro Music Festival in the US, where outstanding young musicians played chamber music with famous musicians, and the participants also formed an occasional orchestra. Végh took part in the Marlboro Festival four times, from 1974 to 1977, and every year he conducted the orchestra, which included musicians who later became world famous, such as Kim Kashkashian, Yo-Yo Ma, Mischa Maisky, and Shlomo Mintz. In 1978, Végh took on leadership of the Salzburg Camerata Academica. With the joint work they put in over the following two decades, the orchestra flourished once more, ranked among the best in the world. The recordings here were made at three concerts during the Budapest Spring Festival.

He wrote mazurkas throughout his lifetime, from his early days in his native Warsaw until 1849, the year of his death in Paris. He brought numerous innovations to the dance form, evolving its humble folk origins to more contemporary art music. Russell, who has performed the world over on the most illustrious stages and with all of the major orchestras, brings his signature grace, imagination, and poetry to Chopin’s beloved oeuvre.

Guilmant) • Fantaisie No. 3, Op. 157 • Marche Religieuse, Op. 107 • Berceuse, Op. 105 (tr. Guilmant) • Fantaisie (1857) The organ works of Saint-Saëns are not the ordinary fare of music listeners, or most organists. Despite the great recognition and popularity the composer enjoyed in his time, as a church musician he was regarded as too conservative. To be sure, his tonal language is forward-looking, but it is the heritage of Bach and a penchant for classical forms that shine through in his organ works.

Camille SAINT-SAËNS Organ Works

Here, we travel to Katarina Church in the Söder district of Stockholm to find an organ built after French models that could recreate something of the spectacular atmosphere of the Parisian organ galleries. German matter-of-factness has dominated Norwegian organ tradition, while the French Romantic organ has had greater popularity in Sweden. Katarina Church, up until the devastating fire of May 1990, had one of northern Europe’s most magnificent Romantic organs, often used for recording French organ music. The new organ is built in a corresponding style, and has become a splendid instrument already used on a number of recordings.

LAWO Classics and pianist Nils Anders Mortensen used Borge Church as a recording location, set amidst the dramatic mountain landscape of the Lofoten Islands. After winning piano competitions both in Norway (Young Pianist Competition, 1986) and abroad (Hannover, Salzburg, and Italy), and giving concerts with major symphony orchestras, Mortensen settled in Alta in the far north of Norway, where he continues to pursue his career. In 2011, he accompanied mezzo-soprano Marianne Beate Kielland on her recording Veslemøy synsk, which was nominated for a Grammy® Award.

Here, Isabelle Oehmichen interprets all 17 nocturnes written for piano solo, 16 of which are probably being played for the first time in more than 150 years! The French pianist’s victory at the 1989 Milosz Magin International Competition (Paris) launched her career. She gave recitals and concerts with orchestras in Poland, recorded for the radio in Warsaw, and for television in Chopin’s native house in Zelazowa Wola. Erich Wolfgang KORNGOLD Works for Violin & Piano

The sweet pain of homesickness and the will to hang on to the irretrievable past—this is not only the central motif of Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s opera The Dead City, but the central theme in the composer’s life. The sextet stems from 1914/15, just after the completion of “Violanta.” The premiere was given in 1917 by an ensemble directed by Arnold Rosé, the famous concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. While Korngold draws on the traditional classical basis of the buoyant last dance in the final, he forms a continuously rising, dissonance-saturated tension over ten minutes, spontaneously evoking comparison to passages of the Schönberg sextet “Verklärte Nacht” (“Transfigured Night”) (1899).

The tour of 1962 was particularly triumphant; Menuhin arrived not alone but with his younger sister Hephzibah, who proved to be a perfect pianist and a skilled accompanist performing sonatas by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and Bartók. It is worth noticing that the musicians of the State Symphony Orchestra under conductor Evgeny Svetlanov did their best to keep up with the soloist! The solo cadenza of the Concerto, performed by Menuhin brilliantly and with technical perfection, deserves particular admiration.

Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Herbert von Karajan: conductor J.S. BACH: Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 in F, BWV 1036 • SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 10 in E minor, Op. 93 This concert from May 29, 1969 in Moscow featured compositions of Bach and Shostakovich. Already at that time, Karajan’s rendition of Bach might have seemed to the audience to be rather out-of-date; performances of Bach’s music by instrumental groups akin to those of his era were already almost completely standard. However, in Karajan’s hands Bach “enforced” by the weighty sound of string instruments possesses no less appeal. The performance of Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony has caused much debate; the critics heard “a certain cold madness” and “a rage of a whirling Scherzo.” However, a much more adequate response was the reaction of the composer himself, who was in Leningrad and who sat silently without moving, completely overcome with the force with which his creation was sounded out.

Release Date: September 11, 2012 Maria Yudina: piano J.S. BACH: Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 The Goldberg Variations is one of the summits of Johann Sebastian Bach’s works for harpsichord. The cycle was published as the fourth in a series of Keyboard Exercises in 1741 by Bach’s publisher and friend, Balthasar Schmid, in Nuremberg. Maria Yudina (1899–1970) performed the Goldberg Variations in concert for the first time in October 1967, three years before her death. In January 1968, her rendition was recorded on Firma Melodiya. Her ascetic, brilliantly simple, and deep performance of the great composer’s work is exceptionally convincing. The key to Yudina’s religious interpretation of the Goldberg Variations can be found among the notes she made on the margins of the clavier: that she played Bach with “the Gospel in my hands.”

Sviatoslav Richter: piano DEBUSSY: Suite Bergamasque • Preludes Book I, Nos. 5–8 • Preludes Book II, Nos. 9–20 Claude Debussy’s works make up the bulk of Sviatoslav Richter’s repertoire, which included the works of such great masters as Chopin, Rachmaninov, Beethoven, and Prokofiev. In the sixties and seventies, Debussy’s works prevailed in the outstanding pianist’s repertoire; the famous French Impressionist’s exquisite miniatures attracted Richter right from the start, and he especially singled out “Delphi Dancing Girls” and “Puck’s Dance.” Suite bergamasque was his most-loved piece, alongside the symphonic poem Sea; Richter replayed it many times from 1944 and his performance of it in 1979 was one of the last animations of the suite in the hands of this legend of Russian pianism.

VERDI: Luisa Miller (complete opera) BLISS: The Olympians (complete opera) In the 1920s, Arthur Bliss was probably the most talked-about composer in England. He was knighted in 1950 one year after composing his first opera, The Olympians, heard here in a live performance from the Royal Festival Hall in London in 1972.

Luisa Miller is one of the best of Verdi’s earlier operas, transitional between his early and middle periods and overshadowed in its day by the “popular trilogy” of Rigoletto, Il trovatore, and La traviata. Today it is has regained much of its luster, especially in performances like this one with the superstars of opera! Live performance, 1976.

Many of these talented composers took one of his works as a model, thus bearing eloquent testimony to their admiration for him. All of them visited him and helped popularize his image as a benevolent “father figure” to this amazing caste of singers and composers. Ockeghem’s death at a ripe old age in 1497 greatly affected the brilliant generation that was in the process of making the transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and naturally led to the creation of some deeply moving music.

Four motets covering a wide stylistic range, a complete polyphonic mass, and an extraordinary poem of lamentation make up this touching tribute to Johannes Ockeghem from his colleagues and friends. The works assembled on this CD represent the high point of Franco-Flemish counterpoint, and illustrate the imperceptible shift from Middle Ages to Renaissance thanks to the sublime music sublimated by the death of the great master. They are sung here according to the tradition of the great cathedrals and collegiate churches: a cappella, with one or two singers to a part, as the works require.

Ensemble Mare Nostrum (dir. Andrea De Carlo) and Nora Tabbush (a worthy heir to Montserrat Figueras) revive some pure treasures of Spanish music. Combining early instruments with traditional ones, they bring out all the colors of these songs and dances that were to be heard in New Spain, the Spanish viceroyalty (1535–1821) that stretched from Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah to Costa Rica, with Mexico City as its capital. It administered not only the territory within those limits, but also the Philippines and various small islands in the Pacific, such as Guam.

Release Date: September 11, 2012 Kate Clark: flutes Nigel North: lute, theorbo Selections by Sermisy, Palestrina, van Wilder, Bassano, Caccini, Frescobaldi, de Courville, de Visée, Hotteterre & more In an age when thousands of recordings testify to the glorious history of the flute as a solo, chamber, and orchestral instrument—and even as a marvelous vehicle for jazz—it is difficult to imagine that the flute did not always have a distinct identity and a dedicated repertoire. In fact, there was no such thing as a “flute repertoire” until the early 18th century. Before this, the flute was simply one of the “soft instruments” considered suitable mostly for indoor music. One particular development stands out as a feature of 16th century musical practice that seems to point toward the role that instruments would come to have in the future: this was the practice of improvising virtuosic embellishments known as “diminutions” or “divisions” upon a single melody line taken from a polyphonic vocal piece while the remaining parts were played on a lute. The perfect balance between equal parts is lost, but the immense power of a beautifully crafted melody is highlighted. The lute supports the whole with a harmony full of life and rhythmic intricacy.

Release Date: September 11, 2012 Joris Verdin: organ FRANCK: 39 short organ pieces Alongside the Three Pieces, the Six Pieces, and the Three Chorales that constitute the body of Franck’s organ works, there is also an entire series of organ works dating from Franck’s youth. These pieces, the majority of which exist only in manuscript, were published by Franck’s son after the composer’s death. The works, often small in scale and clearly intended for organists to use during services, form an impressive collection. Even though the influences of his teachers and models are clearly heard, a fair proportion of these works already bear the stamp of the mature composer and pater seraphicus. Joris Verdin has recorded these works on the organ of the cathedral of St. Omer, one of the oldest organs by Cavaillé-Coll still existent.

Wonderful soprano Michaela Rieder performs a fine choice of arias from operas that were staged at the Viennese court. They are enthralling pieces with fascinating effects, cultivated from improvised music for the double bass, often with literary references, which immerse the listener in a realm of sound that can quench the thirst for tranquility and deceleration in these hectic and boisterous times. Frozen Fritz4 interprets entertaining works whose conception transforms the profound experiences from the composer’s 40 years as a musician, inviting the audience to participate in creating music through active listening.

Petra Stump, Heinz-Peter Linshalm, Reinhold Brunner: basset horns Milan Turkovic: ´ bassoon MOZART: Die Zauberflöte Divertimento for 3 basset horns & bassoon, K.620 • Le nozze di Figaro Divertimento for 3 basset horns & bassoon, K.492 • Divertimento No. 3, K.439 (K.Anh.229) • Adagio in F, K.410 With the support of Reinhold Brunner and Milan Turkovic, ´ on this CD the clarinet duo of Petra Stump & Heinz-Peter Linshalm present a program from the heyday of the basset horn. The beginning is provided by a comprehensive cross-section through Die Zauberflöte, K.620, the successful arrangements of which probably did not derive from Mozart’s own pen, despite his well-known predilection for the instrument, but from contemporaries. They also originate from recent years, including the one by Heinz-Peter Linshalm. The same applies to the Le nozze di Figaro Divertimento for three basset horns & bassoon, K.492, for which famous arias from the opera of the same name form the basis. By contrast, the Divertimento No. 3, K.439 (K.Anh.229) and the Adagio in F, K.410 undoubtedly constitute original works by Mozart for two basset horns and bassoon.

These three sonatas present distinct characteristics of style and writing, the first two adopting the scheme of Church Sonata in the Corellian type, and the third evoking the frame of the Italianate concerto. The harpsichord is completely emancipated, never relegated to the role of simple accompanist, the right hand of the harpsichordist being employed as a second instrumental part next to the viola da gamba.

During the 1700s, the century of the “affetti,” the history of the cantata coincided with that of drama through music and oratorio, adopting these forms with the new union of words and music. In fact, the adhesion to the poetic text in the cantata, which cannot rely on scenery and staging, but has the advantage of greater formal flexibility and variety, was perhaps the ideal form.

Ildebrando Pizzetti was a multi-faceted figure: composer, teacher, critic, and indefatigable musical organizer. In his impressive catalog of works, his compositions for piano occupy only a small part. In fact, his original compositions number about ten, and are short works from his youth. This fact gives even more relevance to his “Canti della stagione alta,” a concerto for piano and orchestra from 1930. This concerto, dedicated to Giuseppe De Robertis—who the composer had met at La Voce during his stay in Florence—was performed for the first time at the La Scala theatre in Milan, with the composer conducting and Carlo Vidusso at the piano.
