OPERA FANATIC p. 37
I
n North America, taste in opera to a high degree has been formed by the Met, where typically the musical preparation of Italian repertory has been undertaken by German refugees and their pupils. Opera Fanatic offers recordings of insiders steeped in tradition, nearly all of them native speakers. Most of the recordings were made in Italy by the greatest singers, both in the studio and live. The label’s objective is to perpetuate their legacies, as the equivalent of a museum. All of Opera Fanatic’s booklets include essays about the performances, or interviews with these renowned opera stars.

“There is no question that this release represents a major statement by an artist who deserves far more acclaim than she has received to date. Lin has paid her dues, and it’s high time that she be let in from the cold of contemporary music recitals and unusual repertoire collections (which, let’s face it, few people care about), so that we can hear what she has to say in the classics of the keyboard literature. On evidence here, she’s more than up to the challenge.” — ClassicsToday [10/10]
“These are smoothly expert performances by Ensemble 415 …This is music in which Albinoni seems to have been concerned less with shouting his name from the rooftops than with letting his ability and attractive personality have their gentlemanly say, an objective that Ensemble 415 realize perfectly.” — Gramophone [July 2009]

“Elegant and impassioned, a completely compelling account of the work. The ensemble brings a piercing musical intelligence to the score … executed with exquisitely nuanced sensitivity … an ideal introduction to anyone coming to it for the first time, and should delight listeners who already love it. Highly recommended.” — All Music Guide (HHHHH performance/ HHHHH sound)
“The playing is so good that it might well dislodge one’s own sentimental favorite in either the ‘Surprise’ or ‘Drum Roll,’ and as most listeners haven’t encountered ‘Il Distratto,’ this wacky, six-movement effort will come as a nice surprise.” — All Music Guide (HHHH performance/ HHHH sound)

Lynne Dawson: soprano Alida Schat: violin Jaap ter Linden: cello Bart van Oort: fortepiano BEETHOVEN: 22 folk song settings from: Irish Songs, WoO 152, 153 • Welsh Songs, WoO 155 • Scottish Songs, Op. 108 “Lynne Dawson sings beautifully in her firm and resonant soprano and her usual poised and unaffected style.” — Gramophone After having received endless requests from Edinburgh publisher George Thomson, in 1809 Beethoven finally agreed to write accompaniments, preludes, and postludes for piano, violin, and cello to 43 Scottish, Welsh, and Irish folk songs. But Beethoven would not have been Beethoven if this modest task had not stimulated his musical curiosity and compositional creativity. And Thomson, who published music as a sideline, was motivated by a genuine passion for the rich heritage of British song. Here, these folk songs are performed by one of Britain’s most versatile and popular sopranos. Lynne Dawson enjoys a diverse career that combines concerts, recitals, recordings, and opera productions, appearing all over the world with the world’s leading orchestras.

During the 1950s, the voice of the young Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau exuded a special lyricism and melodic naturalness as no other had before—and this claim is borne out by this program of sacred songs by the great, early Baroque master Heinrich Schütz. This unusual setting for Fischer-Dieskau’s magisterial voice will appeal not only to fans of early recordings of Baroque repertoire, but to all aficionados of great singing. Elizabeth Grümmer was one the outstanding sopranos of the 20th century but only a few of her song recitals were ever recorded, making this CD particularly valuable. Ranking among the 20 most important sopranos of the last century, Grümmer rose to prominence in the ’50s and ’60s as one of the leading lyric sopranos, performing to acclaim on the world’s stages. Additionally, she was an outstanding interpreter of song and lied—however, this side of her career was scarcely documented. This recording of a song recital, exactly as she performed it on May 30, 1958 features her regular accompanist, Hugo Diez, as well as a short program of three Mozart arias recorded in 1956 with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Karl Münchinger.

The fact that Roger Norrington and his historically sensitive orchestra would turn to the music of Dvoˇrák following their recordings of Tchaikovsky was to have been expected. And naturally, he has chosen the most well-known symphony of the Czech master: the Ninth, composed in America, utilizing the melodies he heard performed by Native American tribes and African Americans during his travels of the continent. Dvoˇrák called his symphony “From the New World,” and Roger Norrington and company provide a performance as exciting as discovering a new world! The remainder of the program is filled out by a surprising performance of Dvoˇrák’s popular Carnival Overture.

However, he left an abundant music production, including some villancicos. These polyphonic vocal works of theatric origin have been adopted by the Church to celebrate the main feasts. Sung in Spanish, they are built on a religious theme, mostly in the form of dialogues, and frequently use music elements of popular origin. Very little explored, the world of Spanish Baroque vocal music is rich with artistic treasures. The villancicos of Ruiz Samaniego are part of this treasure, witnesses of an artistic universe specific to Spain in which spirituality and sensuality are inextricably linked.

Jacques Duphly, then, wrote the final pages of French harpsichord history, in works where nobility vies with eloquence. Born in 1715 (the year of Louis XIV’s death) and buried in July 1789 (just before the Revolution), he represents the perfect summary of an art form that once radiated throughrout Europe.

Instead of a dialogue between the string quartet and the orchestra, we have a positively manic monologue. As for the other pieces featured on this disc, “I wanted to write a sister work for the one that already existed,” says Rihm. “Or a brother work? Sotto voce is a slow, relatively quiet piece. Sotto voce 2 is something like an answer to it—another answer, so to speak, a fast movement, a motion-filled piece that whispers. It has to do with motion sequences and with velocity.”

Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria Adrian Leaper: conductor MAHLER: Symphony No. 7 “Adrian Leaper’s light, fresh-sounding Mahler … emphasizes the music’s bucolic nature and evokes the youthful Mahler of the Wunderhorn songs.” — Classics Today Mahler’s Seventh Symphony has accumulated the German moniker “Lied Der Nacht” for its overtly romantic melodies and distinctly complex orchestration. The Symphony is infrequently performed, and this recording by the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria captures the magic behind Mahler’s winding labyrinths that always yield strikingly transcendent resolutions.

Sesto Bruscantini, Fiorenza Cossotto, Luigi Alva, Nicolai Ghiaurov: vocal soloists Orchestra & Chorus of La Scala, Milan Gabriele Santini: conductor ROSSINI: Il barbiere di Siviglia (complete opera) “[Ghiaurov has] the most beautiful of bass voices heard since the Second World War.” — Gramophone “This performance was recorded live at La Scala on January 20, 1964. Gabriele Santini—who would pass away toward the end of that year—brings the authority of a life saturated in this repertoire to his pacing. Sesto Bruscantini hams up Figaro’s sense of self-regard, nicely matching the other big voices on hand: Nicolai Ghiaurov is a positively thunderous Basilio who all but brings the house down, while the underrated Carlo Badioli is alone worth the price of admission for his hilariously characterized Bartolo. Alva brings wonderful variety to the role, encompassing its lovesickness in his serenades as well as the swagger of the soldier and the unctuousness of the music teacher—the two fake identities Figaro plots out for him.” — Thomas May
