Pink Martini’s first single from their hit album Get Happy becomes their first vinyl 7” ever! “Zundoko-bushi,” originally made famous by the Japanese band The Drifters in 1969, is based on a devastating anonymous Japanese text about a soldier saying goodbye forever at the train station, and the woman he leaves behind writing love letters with her tears. But the joyous bombastic arrangement transforms the song into a water-skiing samurai-spy lounge-surf mega-hit, featuring exotic instruments like the sitar and flexatone. The concept of the “human zoo” has existed in art and literature for centuries, thus Electric Six recognizes and accepts it is not breaking new conceptual ground by naming its tenth studio album Human Zoo. From the opening track, “Karate Lips,” the album takes the listener into a teenage karate tournament for girls as refereed by Def Leppard. The crunchy guitars hit you in the face like a teenage foot, and you immediately remember why you purchased or illegally downloaded this latest Electric Six album. Like many E6 albums, Human Zoo does not have one defining sound; rather, it is a sampler plate of the entire history of rock and roll music. Like Motown … now they are doing Motown. “Alone With Your Body” is the feel-good necrophilia anthem of the summer, and sees the band embracing this oft-overlooked section of their hometown’s musical history. From there we ramble into the spaghetti-western marching-band good times of “Gun Rights,” the triumphant Disnification of “I’ve Seen Rio in Flames,” and the absurd hip-hop of “(Who the Hell Just) Call My Phone.” But it’s not an E6 album until the closer is better than the rest of the record combined. The gorgeous, haunting pop of “The Afterlife” might be the greatest thing the band has ever done. Ever.

Silhouette is the new album from Ali Campbell, the legendary voice of UB40, reunited with Astro & Mickey. Recorded in London’s renowned RAK Studios, the album is an inspired mix of freshly-minted new songs and sparkling, reggae-fied cover versions of classics by The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Chi-Lites, and others. The title track, “Silhouette,” was originally a 1957 hit for American doo-wop group The Rays, though this new, yearning take owes more to an early 1970s version by the crown prince of reggae, the late Dennis Brown.

Ali’s voice remains as strong as ever: rich, melodic, and instantly recognizable. “He’s a genius in the way he can work a set of lyrics around a great melody,” says Mickey. “Any song he sings could easily be a UB40 tune.”

As founding members of UB40, Ali, Mickey, and Astro helped to define reggae music for a generation. The iconic Birmingham reggae troupe topped the UK singles chart on three occasions, and sold 70 million records as they took their smooth yet rootsy musical blend to all corners of the globe. Into Another were one of New York’s most interesting groups to emerge from the underground. They caused heads to turn with their melodies, sounding of post-medieval bards with guitars and heaviness not heard elsewhere, while Richie Birkenhead’s unique lyrical genius poured over. The year 1994 saw the release of their amazing second full-length, Ignaurus. With favorites such as “Running Into Walls” and “William,” this is the record that defined their sound, filled to the brim with spectacular songs that venture into deep, dark, and progressive rock territory while still being firmly anchored in melody, groove, and abrasive angst. The album catapulted Into Another into the ranks of much-heralded “buzz” bands of their day, and now sees a welcome reissue from venerable punk label Revelation Records!

Spider Lilies is dark electro-rock with female vocals, guitar, and often violin. The project is defined by Stacey Campbell’s vocals and electronic composition. Live, Spider Lilies is a high-energy experience as well as a skillful performance. Campbell was formerly known as a guitarist/backup vocalist of the Cruxshadows.
