The album features a selection of Palestrina’s music for Christmas including his largely unknown masterpiece, the Missa O magnum mysterium. Also presented are several unusual hymn settings including A solis ortus cardine, a setting of a famous chant hymn for Christmas morning. Alongside the hymns are motets from the Song of Songs, some of Palestrina’s most sublime and expressive works, and as with the previous disc in the series this album includes three of them. Completing the recording are three double-choir motets (a genre in which Palestrina was unsurpassed): Ave Regina, Iubilate Deo, and Surge illuminare.

Dr. Tikey Zes (b. 1927) is the most prolific composer of Greek Orthodox liturgical music in America. Lindoro The Royal Wind Music A collection of Renaissance music from Venice, Naples, and Rome Angels, Gypsies and Shepherds is a journey through the many characters of ensemble music in late 16th- and early 17th-century Italy. The title refers to three recurrent allegories found not only in music, but also in literature and the visual arts. Angels are messengers and archetypical symbols of the divine and supernatural. Their voices shine through in the motets by Corfini, Agostini, Trombetti, and Rossi. Arcadian shepherds represent the ideals of beauty and harmony, translated into music in the elegant dances by Alberti, Molinaro, and Rossi and in the well-balanced instrumental music by Cavazzoni, Guami, and Andrea Gabrieli. Finally, gypsies and other marginal figures show an increasing interest of the arts in aspects of human life that are often hidden or repressed. Between 1674 and 1675, the Spanish composer Gaspar Sanz printed a pioneering collection of pieces for the Spanish guitar. It was remarkable in many ways. Liszt wrote in several places in the scores of the Rhapsodies, “quasi zimbalon,” or “play like a cimbalom.” This and the numerous sections inspired by traditional Hungarian music gave Vizi the idea to arrange some of the Rhapsodies for piano, cimbalom, and a Hungarian traditional music ensemble. The album includes Rhapsodies 9, 10, 11, 12, and 14: the Hungarian Fantasy. Ferenc Vizi’s article in the booklet gives a fuller explanation of the program and quotes Liszt, who wrote extensively about gypsy music and his gypsy origins.
