• First full album of original compositions from both artists since the release of Bella Neurox in 1999. • Petra Haden is a former member of The Decemberists, That Dog, and The Rentals who has toured and/or collaborated with the Foo Fighters, Sean Lennon, Yuka Honda, Mike Watt, Bill Frisell, Victoria Williams, and many others. • Haden’s cover of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” was released on an Engine Room comp in August 2007. Major internet marketing push in support of the release, with Haden’s track as a key selling point. • Haden’s tribute to The Who’s Sells Out has achieved great critical acclaim, scanning nearly 10,000 copies. She has performed multiple concerts of Sells Out with an all-star choir • Miss Murgatroid has an extensive discography that includes five full albums and many collaborations (John Fahey, Negativland, Red House Painters), most recently guesting on accordion and vocals with PDX’s Boy Eats Drum Machine. • Miss Murgatroid was recently interviewed by PureMusic.com. • Three-panel digipak features stunning artwork by Christine Shields. • Hiring independent publicist and radio servicing company. • Majority of advertising will be done online, including MP3 giveaways.
Overview Reuniting after more than a four-year hiatus, Miss Murgatroid and Petra Haden convene anew for another bout of ebullient sonic symbiosis. Their simple but unique combination of accordion, violin, and voice delves into waters deep and strange, with a mix of vocals and instrumentals that transport the listener to eerie dark alleys, lush Italian seasides, and the false bottoms of haunted toychests. Their last effort, Bella Neurox, met with critical acclaim and delighted fan frenzy. In 2003 a mysterious anonymous benefactor approached Miss Murgatroid about reuniting with Petra Haden for a follow-up to Bella Neurox. Apparently he had written his last two books while listening to their collaboration, as well as to Haden’s fantastic solo disc Imaginaryland and Miss M’s spooky, surreal Through Alien Empires. He offered to help the duo make their next record with the honest motivation of simply wanting another one. The girls agreed, and their newest effort offers nine new tracks of absolute symphonic loveliness. Fueled by mutual heartache, spectral visions, grandiose baroque fantasies, and their undying fondness for one another’s brains, Miss M and Petra Haden have truly outdone themselves. Layering vocals, violin, viola, and accordion in ways that will utterly enchant and intrigue the listener, this is a true labor of love that defies as many genres as it is influenced by.
“A startling duo. Rose’s accordion sounds church-organ, big in some parts and then like the fiercest ’60sera electric keyboard in others, while Haden, formerly of That Dog (and the daughter of jazz bass virtuoso Charlie), wields a beautiful tone, terse but rich … a wonderful recording.” — Andrew Bartlett, Amazon.com

Press Quotes
COLIN MELOY SINGS LIVE!
“Not everybody’s vinyl-only bonus track gets its own headline story over here at Pitchfork news, but yet again, not everybody we cover wrote ‘The Crane Wife.’ Hearts went pitter-pat last week when we reported that Decemberists frontman/coffee shop heartthrob/toy monkey enthusiast Colin Meloy’s forthcoming live solo acoustic disc, Colin Meloy Sings Live!, would arrive in April from Kill Rock Stars. But there’s more! It turns out that the vinyl incarnation of Colin’s album won’t be dropping via Kill Rock Stars at all, but rather from their buds at Jealous Butcher, which was responsible for the vinyl release of all of the previous KRS Decemberists LPs. It will come on two discs of 180-gram audiophile-quality virgin vinyl, and sport as a bonus track a cover of the oft-covered ‘Blues Run the Game’ by ’60s folkie Jackson C. Frank.” — Pitchfork “In the journey to indie superstardom, embarking on an acoustic solo tour is a rite of passage equivalent to earning your Eagle Scout merit badge. The Decemberists have solidified their path to greatness, and … frontman Colin Meloy has launched his own Eagle Scout campaign. Each [song] is delivered with the utmost honesty and precision, and between songs, Meloy exhibits an accessible charm that belies his growing level of fame. This is the sign of a true showman, and one who is still genuine and personable to boot.” — Harmonium Music
Selling Points • Colin Meloy is the lead singer/songwriter of The Decemberists. • Double LP pressed on 180-gram audiophile-quality vinyl. • CD to be released by Kill Rock Stars. • Contains exclusive bonus track “Blues Run the Game” and expanded art. • Extensive Spring 2008 tour in support of this release. • Ad placement in major media outlets.
Overview A 15-song set documenting The Decemberists leader’s 2006 solo trek across the US. The set runs the length and breadth of Colin Meloy’s songwriting career, covering his days as part of Missoula’s Tarkio up through the current Decemberists catalog. Meloy’s charmingly awkward stage banter, coupled with the passion and introspection given to the songs in this solo live context, make this record a wonderful view into the songwriter’s creative world.
“Colin Meloy’s voice has some lovely nuances and without the lush orchestration of a full band, you can really geek out on his lyrics, learn a few new words, and be astounded by a couple rhyme-schemes.” — Sound on the Sound

Press Quotes “Picture an amalgamation of Captain Beefheart, Sun Ra Arkestra, the Beach Boys circa Pet Sounds, Radiohead, and the Flaming Lips, and you’d still only be touching the tip of the iceberg. Strap yourself in and get prepared for a wild and wooly sonic ride.” — All Music Guide “The guitar and violin that echo Robert Fripp and David Cross sparring in mid-’70s King Crimson also sounds like you’re fending off 10 pirates at a crowded bar and slicing out their tongues without knocking over a single beer.” — Pitchfork “Philly’s Make a Rising can genre-splice with the best of ‘em … [traversing] melancholy Beach Boys harmonies, chilly musique concr`ete, and clattery prog rock. But that’s not what makes the band special: for all their schizo tendencies, MAR’s songs maintain beautiful, compelling narrative threads that transcend any particular musical style.” — Time Out New York

Overview Philadelphia’s Make a Rising is back, bigger and better than ever. Expanded to a sextet for its second album, Make a Rising has realized its potential. After laudatory press for 2005 debut Rip Through the Hawk Black Night, MAR hunkered down and began working on an intricate, elaborate follow-up. Holographic in nature and transpersonal in effect, Make a Rising is a band that composes unlike any other. While most experimental bands reside either completely inside or totally outside traditional pop song forms, Make a Rising writes its own rules. The result is an excitingly original and marvelous amalgam of genres and influences, layered with spontaneity and energy. We wouldn’t say it if we didn’t mean it: absolute masterpiece. Infinite Ellipse and Head With Open Fontanel features contributions by members of Normal Love, Fern Knight, and Shot x Shot. The last three years have seen Make a Rising sharing the stage with artists such as Dr. Dog, Dirty Projectors, Lightning Bolt, Man Man, Uz Jsme Doma, Pattern is Movement, Gang Dance, and Neil Hamburger, as well as making two SXSW appearances and headlining the opening night of the Popped! Philadelphia festival.

Press Quotes “A proper full-length by Public Record is on the horizon, and expectations are already sky high.” — Philadelphia Weekly “[A] crazy hybrid of Factory Records clackity British funk, old soul dance 45s, and Balkan boogie à la early Camper Van Beethoven.” — Philebrity “An enjoyable set of instrumentals as primordial as they are melodic, as trance-y as they are dance-y. Their sound is fun and somber, with the cool mellow of the saxophone mixing with the itchy funk of the guitar and the muscular bass groove. It is simply impossible to categorize the sound, but it’s easy to enjoy. ESG? Blurt? Can? Krakatoa? Like a good stew, there’s a touch of everything in Public Record’s sound.” — LVHRD.org
Selling Points • Highly anticipated debut. • East Coast tour in Spring 2008. • Remix album with well-known contributors coming in Fall 2008. • Named a Top Band To Watch in 2007 by Philebrity. • Full service to music press and web outlets by High Two. • Full service to licensing agents by High Two. • Service to college and web radio by High Two. • Ads with Arthur, Signal To Noise, Copper Press, Magnet, and more.
Overview Philadelphia septet Public Record blends together a vast array of musical genres ranging from early-disco to shoegaze, Afro-beat to Scottish Postcard pop, and northern soul to Factory Records funk. The product of this co-mingling of musical ideas and sensibilities is a refreshingly creative take on dance music that manages to surprise and bewilder listeners with each changing verse and track. The 13 tracks of Public Record’s self-titled debut bring the band’s unique composite to fruition with great intricacy and cohesion.

Impressive at every musician’s station, this ensemble produces music that’s charming and elegant.” — Variety

Press Quotes “Armed with the ethereal mystery of the Cocteau Twins and the crunchy guitars of Lush, Secret Shine’s songs come in striking musical layers … a stirring and melodic blend of shoegazing bliss.” — Amplifier “Songs crescendo, shake, and shudder like a dense, hot mist falling on your shoulders, filling your head with visions of vistas and weightless elation. It’s flat-out majestic on the orchestral strings … like a trip by rail through snowy mountain ranges.” — Big Takeover “Immense swirling soundscapes that reek of the nostalgia of Slowdive but bristle with the undoubted influence of contemporaries Sigur Rós and Mogwai provide the orchestral backdrop to the mesmerizing ethereal boy-girl vocal harmonies. Irrepressibly gorgeous.” — Tasty Fanzine
Selling Points • Incredibly long-awaited sophomore album. It has been 14 years since their debut! • Secret Shine has a dedicated fan base, and demand for this new album is high. • The band is well-known in shoegaze circles, and for their output on cult indie label Sarah Records. • This year, seminal shoegazers My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain will tour again, indicating a possible shoegaze revival. • Press service by Twentyseven Media. • Core radio service by AAM Sunday Service. • National media campaign by NAIL Media. • Email blasts to tens of thousands of recipients via mailing lists including Clairecords, Tonevendor, Secret Shine, and target-specific fan sites for shoegaze and indie music.
Overview All of the Stars is Secret Shine’s second studio album, and their first in fourteen years. The band took an unscheduled nine-year break before returning in 2004 with the release of their back catalog on Clairecords, followed by two emphatically received EPs of new material in 2006 and live shows in Europe and America. Although it could sit comfortably alongside shoegaze classics like Slowdive’s Souvlaki, My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, and The Pale Saints’ The Comforts of Madness, All of the Stars is a unique treasure and possibly the new wave of “stargaze.”

Tears Run Rings Always, Sometimes, Seldom, Never Genre: Alt Rock Label: Clairecords CD: CLE 73 Price Code: M (SRP $14.99) Digipak; Box Lot 30 5% PREORDER DISCOUNT NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Overview When the members of Tears Run Rings didn’t play well with a big-shot producer, they set off to create an album on their own. There was only one dilemma: they were now living in three different cities. This Portland-Seattle-Los Angeles collaboration was accomplished in the style of the Postal Service: occasional time together produced the framework for songs that took shape as they swapped tracks using CD-Rs and the internet. Three years and one self-released EP later, TRR presents its debut full-length. These pop veterans have traded their twee roots for dense wall-of-sound arrangements and aggressive, distorted guitars brimming with layers of boy-girl vocals inspired by the harmonies of ’60s groups such as The Lennon Sisters and The Caravelles.

Press Quotes “While many artists are using a Moog, Roland, or Juno for bouncy pop, Park Avenue Music approaches the unique instruments as if they were gentle as flowers. It could be Jeannette Faith’s concert pianist training or simply a love for exquisite sounds. Either way, [it] is an alluring ensemble of downtempo and quiet, sophisticated pop.” — All Music Guide
Selling Points • The final/crossover album by this incarnation of Park Avenue Music, now known as Hearts+Horses. • Ballboy vocalist Gordon McIntyre guests on one track. • Core radio service by AAM Sunday Service. • National media campaign by NAIL Media.
OVERVIEW Sacramento couple Wes Steed and Jeannette “Juju” Faith got a shiny new piano, so up went the mics and out came the music. Flowing pieces of raw improvisation were recorded, and then dressed in layers of modular synth distortion. While one mic picked up off-the-cuff vocals for several tracks, another picked up their beloved cat’s collar bell ringing in the background for what seems the sweetest topping to the already honeyed instrumental “Norway Kitty,” the opening track on what has become Park Avenue Music’s loveliest accomplishment yet. By Hearts+Horses may seem an odd title, but given that the band is indeed changing their name to Hearts+Horses, this last effort as Park Avenue Music seemed only fit to be thusly titled.

Overview Never Enough Hope is the brainchild of Chicago-based composer/improviser Tobin Summerfield, whose most notorious work has been with Crush Kill Destroy and the Detroit-based Larval (Cuneiform Records). Utilizing rock and free music idioms in the orchestration—which takes shape in the form of a 20-piece ensemble—it is the precision voicing of every individual instrument that gives Never Enough Hope its weight. Summerfield composes with all members of the ensemble in mind, so each of their unique voices is represented. Never Enough Hope is like a family reunion, and an all-star team.

Rocket Number Nine Zoom Zoom Up Rocket Number Nine Zoom Zoom Up Genre: Jazz Label: Contraphonic LP: CTP 65 Price Code: N (SRP $12.99) LP Jacket; Box Lot 25 5% PREORDER DISCOUNT NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA
Monty Craig, Andy Nagel, and John Byce (Fruit Bats, Branches) are Rocket Number Nine Zoom Zoom Up: a trio of modern-jazz-inflected musicians looking to contribute something significant and tuneful to the massive volumes of recorded works by the masters of the field. The band, while certainly not the first group to approach jazz in a unique way, hopes to strip it of its weighty harmonic baggage and rhythmic clichés in the way the Ramones did for rock music. On the group’s self-titled debut, the members spent a great deal of time developing material that main songwriter Monty Craig brought into rehearsals. With the help of Chicago producer John McEntire (Tortoise, Stereolab, The Sea and Cake) fleshing out the production, the album stands as a progressive, funktinged, experimental-leaning journey set atop mountains of melody and billowing rhythms. It’s music for the discerning jazzbo and the pizzeria alike. It’s a nod towards tradition and innovation, and is ultimately successful because the group has made it its very own.

Don Cherry Live at Café Montmartre 1966 Vol. 2 Genre: Jazz Label: ESP-Disk’ CD: ESP 4043 Price Code: M (SRP $14.99) Digipak; Box Lot 30
Volume two of the Don Cherry at Montmartre collection continues with more superb music, this time from March 1966. This unique performance actually represents the third Cherry appearance at Copenhagen’s Café Montmartre. He had just recorded his first album for Blue Note Records, Complete Communion, in December 1965. Another added attraction is the mini-suite in tribute to Albert Ayler, the medley of Ghosts and Holy Spirit. Gato Barbieri is on fire throughout all three performances, Karl Berger constantly has a fast-paced conversation going on his vibes, and Bo Steif keeps a pulsating rhythm on bass upon which Berger and drummer Aldo Romano float.

Press Quotes “For this Town Hall concert, Ornette Coleman debuts with his new trio (a unit that would return in 1965) featuring the remarkable bassist David Izenson and drummer Charles Moffett. Overview On Christmas evening 1962, Ornette Coleman produced and recorded his own concert at Town Hall in New York with David Izenzon (bass), Charles Moffett (drums), and a string ensemble. An important release documenting a point of change in Coleman’s work, the song “Dedication to Poets and Writers” for string quartet is now widely recognized as his first harmolodic chamber music based on the ideas he would later call Harmolodics. This classical string quartet piece fits together curiously well with the three trio pieces.

Nurzery [Rhymes] laid the foundation for a promising career with their club hit “Blood and Wine” and their stellar first album Injections, but they did not rest on their laurels. Instead, they went on to produce an amazing second album, Thorns, produced by Sebastian Schleinitz (Captive of Society). The result of this collaboration is a breathtaking tour de force: strobe lights, punching bass lines, captivating synth riffs, and a voice that lures you straight into the abyss of hell! Nurzery [Rhymes] blends harsh club music with emotional honesty. The combination is irresistible, giving the album a wonderful sense of diversity and intensity.

BACK TO THE CAT
Press Quotes
“A chaotic jazz-funk shuffle … brass-backed, Sixties-style soul … breezy country-and-western … swampy Southern States blues—[Adamson’s] new songs shone brightest.” — The Times “All over the place, swinging through dark pop, atmospheric instrumentals, and demented circus music … unique with great personality.” — Pitchfork
Selling Points • Adamson’s eighth studio album, and second on his own Central Control International label. • Premiered live in London in November 2007 during Adamson’s stint as Artist-In-Residence at the London Jazz Festival. • Promoted and marketed in the US by Girlie Action and Central Control International. • Debut solo US tour in Summer 2008, preceded by the digital single “Spend a Little Time.”
Barry Adamson Back to the Cat
Overview Back to the Cat is the work of one of the most original, inventive, distinctive voices in British contemporary music at the height of his considerable powers. With a full consignment of brass and strings and a wealth of musicology behind him, Barry Adamson is about to take you on an epic adventure in sound. Adamson’s eighth album is where it all comes together: a life’s passions poured into ten tracks that at once sound strangely familiar and dazzlingly new. A musical odyssey through noir jazz, sun-drenched pop ballads, fractious urban funk, devilish gospel, heavenly blues, and subversive soul … not to mention a Hammond organ salute to the late, great Jimmy Smith. As befits the man who invented the idea of the imaginary soundtrack album with his 1988 solo debut Moss Side Story, every song is rendered in vivid widescreen, with a narrative as compulsive as an Alfred Hitchcock chiller. With a wicked sense of humor and a beady eye for detail, Adamson charts the complexity and duplicity of human nature, often deliberately contrasting stories with sounds. From a late-sixties Bacharach swinger and a mournful steel guitar breathing a country sigh to a heady gospel lament from an incarcerated Prince of Darkness, Back to the Cat takes you places you never expected.

press quotes “John Fahey [was] a pioneering acoustic guitarist in the 1960s who became an underground-rock icon in the 1990s … Fahey was a supple finger picker who fused his passion for vintage folk and blues with the advanced harmonies of modern composers such as Bela Bartók and Charles lves. A genuine blues scholar, Fahey wrote his UCLA master’s thesis on the legendary Charley Patton and rediscovered Bukka White. But Fahey’s albums, many of which he issued on his own Takoma label, explored the mystique as well as the manner of roots music, evoking a mythic America.” — David Fricke, Rolling Stone
Selling Points • The Three Day Band was a three-day collaboration between John Fahey and Ayal Senior. • This disc includes 15 tracks of John Fahey reading selected excerpts from his writing. • Promotional mailing by Important Records. • Ads with The Wire.
Overview John Fahey and Ayal Senior laid down the tracks for The Three Day Band in a Woodburn hotel room at some point in 1999. These tracks show an undocumented, improvisational side of Fahey. It’s certainly not earlyperiod Fahey, but not TOTE era either. At night, after the recording sessions commenced, Senior would record Fahey reading selected excerpts from his writing. Fifteen tracks of Fahey reading are included here. From Ayal Senior’s liner notes: “I think I first met John Fahey at a Vince Martin gig in Manhattan at some point in 1998. He was sitting in the back of CBGB’s ‘other’ space, listening to the gig and painting with fat bright markers in a notebook he carried around with him. It was impossible not to notice this guy. Big, bald, white beard, black sunglasses, wearing shorts and wool socks with black basketball shoes in a triple sized red t-shirt. I didn’t even know who John Fahey was, but John Allen, who brought Fahey out to the East Coast and who I have always greatly admired, learned me to the game. John Fahey and Vince Martin in the same room. Incredible. I wonder if they spoke … I asked John for one of the pieces he was working on and he casually ripped a sheet out of his notebook and gave it to me. “At night, Fahey would lie in bed and I’d record him reading various excerpts from his writings. He reminded me a lot of Kurt Vonnegut in his cynicism and gallows humor. I think they would have gotten along great. I love the unfinished Fahey short story about Elie Wiesel meeting Doc Boggs on a park bench. Boxes were strewn all over his room filled with spiral notebooks. Fool’s gold.”

press quotes “Conrad Schnitzler is an artist and musician who has been organizing sounds into musical works that have consistently blown minds all across the world since the late sixties.” — Angbase “Many consider Conrad Schnitzler to be the grandfather of European electronic music. In the late sixties/early seventies, it was Schnitzler who convinced Tangerine Dream and Kluster … to ‘go electronic,’ embracing the then-unexplored realm of synthesized sound. Having set those individuals on a new sonic course, Schnitzler went off to pursue a solo career that has lasted over three decades.” — Sonic Curiosity

Overview Admira is sourced from original master recordings discovered by Kluster member and Tangerine Dream engineer Klaus Freudigmann. It is presented here for the first time in this deluxe package. The intense sessions were made with Conrad Schnitzler at the helm, as always, after the departure of Mobius and Roedelius from the group. Admira is limited to 1,000 copies and is packaged in a deluxe gatefold jacket made to emulate the original die-stamped puffy packaging for Kluster’s album Klopfzeichen. When you look at documentaries from the late sixties, it looks like California was everywhere. Endless summer, or a never-ending Woodstock. What we did not know than was that the Woodstock movie showed the pictures people wanted to see. The guys who made the film knew that, and the success at the box office was their reward for not disappointing their audience’s expectations. Berlin was quite different. The winters were bitter cold. The people lived in old houses with little coal ovens, and keeping them working was a task that could consume half a day. Rock ‘n’ roll, and its adventurous sibling psychedelia, were effective remedies against climatic, political, and mental cold. A few years ago Klaus Freudigmann found a suitcase that hadn’t been opened for twenty years. Out popped a bundle of tapes from the Kluster sessions (1970–1973) that had stood the test of time quite well.

Vulcano is limited to 1,000 copies and is packaged in a deluxe gatefold jacket made to emulate the original die-stamped puffy packaging for Kluster’s album Klopfzeichen. Summer of Love? Kluster was formed in West Berlin, much closer to Siberia than to San Francisco, Haight-Ashbury, and Golden Gate Park. And in 1970, a lot of the optimism of the mid-’60s had already ceased. But the political movements of the late sixties were a child of the same optimism that fueled the rapid developments changing not only the material side of life but also the arts, music, and the way people interacted. The new left and the hippie movements where all these ideas concentrated weren’t the result of poverty, but were built on the belief that with modern technology there is enough for everybody.

That optimism had a soundtrack that was based on the same technology. From the electric guitar, reverb, and echo units to the first synthesizers, everything that sounded as if it came from the future was welcome. Future meant space travel, so it’s quite natural that the first effects widely used were those that sent the listener to a space he’d never been before. That Kluster made simple music on DIY instruments, droning and banging on one note for half an hour, did not mean they were into any kind of primitivism. The group did not want to go back. If the future was inevitable, they wanted to shape it—at least sonically. What Kluster did was get rid of the schemes of pop music to find out what else they could do with their tools, polishing and lubricating them for a future music.

There she picked up the pieces of a halfrecorded album (with Jamie Carter in Chicago) and molded the collection into a coherent whole with recording engineer Raymond Richards.
