Over the past 25 years, under the enthusiastic leadership of Francis Pollet, their productions have been characterized by an exciting, healthy sense of adventure in style, genre, and presentation. Both Russians wrote only one Cello Sonata; Shostakovich when he was on the brink of censorship by the Communist authorities, and Prokofiev when he was in the midst of his.

Now, Lada returns with another innovative concept that explores the Slavic musical soul through the dumka, the wistful musical genre to which numerous composers turned to conjure their own aural imagery.

Per Monsieur Pisendel (AVR 18) was the debut album released by the Vivaldi enthusiast on AVIE in 2003, launching a recording career that has earned international plaudits, awards, and recognition as one of the world’s leading authorities on the music of Vivaldi and his Italian baroque contemporaries. Per Monsieur Pisendel 2 brings together works by the dazzling German violinist’s teachers Antonio Montanari and the Red Priest, the last “Pisendel” sonata by Albinoni, and two sonatas by the Saxon himself, including the fiendish unaccompanied sonata which inspired Bach to compose his six similarly-scored works. Shining through Adrian’s erudition is stellar music performed with laser beam precision.

I Solisti del Vento W.A. MOZART: Serenade in B flat major “Gran Partita” K. 361 • Requiem in D minor K. 626, arr. Köhler Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart no doubt contributed the most beautiful composition to 18th-century “harmonie music” with his Serenade in B flat major, K. 361. This composition is truly grand; everything in the serenade carries ambitious promises. There is no historical arrangement of Mozart’s Requiem for wind ensemble, so I Solisti del Vento commissioned Christian Köhler with such a transcription. Köhler opted for the same strength as that of the Gran Partita, and the result is faithful to Mozart’s sense of drama.

CD: CHR 72636 Price Code: S (SRP $18.99) Number of Discs: 2 O-Card Double Slimline, Box Lot 22 d

Danish National Symphony Orchestra Michael Schønwandt: conductor MAHLER: Symphony No. 9 Gustav Mahler’s Ninth Symphony is often viewed as a valedictory work, a final statement from the last symphonic master in the Austro-German musical tradition. Naturally, there is plenty of evidence to both confirm and complicate such a view, and a brief survey of that evidence allows the compelling story of Mahler’s Ninth to begin to take shape. The Danish National Symphony Orchestra was founded as a radio orchestra in 1925 in connection with the launch of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR), and consists of 99 musicians. The orchestra is based in the DR Concert Hall, one of Europe’s most spectacular concert halls, which was inaugurated in 2009. The orchestra’s strong, straightforward musical personality has its roots in its close links with Danish and other Nordic music.

Winter & Winter Arditti String Quartet Irvine Arditti: violin Ashot Sarkissjan: violins Ralf Ehlers: viola Lucas Fels: cello LANG: Introduzione • Sonata I: Pater, dimitte illis; non enim sciunt, quid faciun • Sonata II: Amen dico tibi: hodie mecum eris in paradise • Sonata III: Mulier, ecce filius tuus, et tu, ecce mater tua! • Sonata IV: Eli, Eli, lama asabthani? • Sonata V: Sitio • Sonata VI: Consumatus est • Sonata VII: Pater in tuas manas commendo spiritum meum • Il Terremoto “Superbly played.” — The Guardian HHHH Bernhard Lang’s work examines the meaning of life, revolving around themes of existence and death. Through cellular automats and granular analytical methods, historical texts are processed, comparable to the approach of experimental films by Raphael Montañez Ortíz and Martin Arnold with “found footage.” All movements circle around so-called catastrophic episodes, where the unfolding process comes to a standstill and is blocked in “dead repetitions” (Gilles Deleuze) like a stuck record or a defective DVD. On this disc, Lang goes deep into the substance of Haydn’s enigmatic masterpiece The Seven Last Words of Christ to reach a radical insight. His composition is interpreted in expressive, existential sound by the Arditti String Quartet.

An exciting new choral disc of world premiere compositions and the debut recording of a new choir, founded and conducted by English composer Timothy Hamilton! The inspiration for forming Cantoribus came from a desire to introduce an exciting and contemporary dimension to choral music. From his early days as a chorister at Portsmouth Cathedral, Hamilton felt an affinity with singing and the English choral tradition. Later moving into the world of opera, his vision was to create an ensemble of hand-picked operatic voices that also had choral experience. Hamilton’s bespoke repertoire draws on the sheer power, both physically and emotionally, of the human voice, utilized to its fullest extent. The incredible palette of vocal color and dramatic range wonderfully demonstrates the versatility of the operatic voice. All the settings are a cappella, keeping the voice at the center of this recording, undiluted by accompanying instrumentation. Advertising with Fanfare and BBC Music Magazine.

Peña • TÁRREGA: Recuerdos de la Alhambra This CD has been a long time coming, and dates back to the first time Paco Peña and Eliot Fisk ever met, when they performed separately at a now-defunct guitar festival in Germany, in September 1983. The disc does not pretend to be either pure flamenco or pure classical. Necessarily, the classical selections are colored by Paco’s flamenco sensibility just as the flamenco selections are colored by Eliot’s formation in the classical world. But that is exactly what is interesting! Paco finds things in classical music that would never occur to a classical player, and something analogous can be said of Eliot’s attempts to enter the mysterious temple of flamenco. Recent Performances in New York, Denver, Raleigh-Durham, and Washington DC.

This second volume in a series devoted to Thomas’ music presents six works for various chamber combinations. Voices of Exile makes no overt political point; rather, it tries to give voice to a wide-ranging group who have suffered exile, and who can give insight into the shared experience of the refugee.

Interest in the music of Joachim Raff has so far concentrated chiefly on the orchestral works, while the operas, songs, and even the fascinating chamber music have largely been neglected. One glance at Raff ’s catalog of works shows that more than half of his 216 opus numbers were written for the piano, for two or four hands. Award-winning pianist Valentina Seferinova was born in Vidin, on the River Danube in Bulgaria. Recognized as a child prodigy, she gave solo recitals and played with many different chamber ensembles and symphony orchestras (both as soloist and accompanist) from a very early age.

It is clear that Salomon Jadassohn is a shamefully neglected composer. Many music critics attacked Jadassohn’s works, labeling them dry and academic, but nothing could be farther from the truth as his joyous First Symphony shows! Jadassohn was a distinguished teacher, though he considered himself primarily a composer. He was acknowledged to be a master of counterpoint and harmony, and was also a gifted melodist in the tradition of Mendelssohn.

Ignaz Brüll wrote well over 100 piano works, many orchestral and chamber pieces, and numerous operas. Sadly, nearly all of his works have been ignored by the music establishment for over a hundred years, and the public has been denied access to Brüll’s qualities as a composer, which were so evident to his friend Johannes Brahms. Brüll deserves to be repositioned alongside friends Brahms, Mahler, and Schumann, and this series from Cameo Classics aims to do just that.

Dorothy Howell was born in Birmingham and entered the Royal Academy of Music at the unusually early age of 15, where she studied composition under Sir J.B. McEwen. The late John Drummond (a distinguished Controller of BBC Radio Three) considered her the finest British woman composer of her era. Eugene Goossens called Cyril Scott the “father of modern British music”; he has also been referred to as “the English Debussy.” A prolific composer, Scott wrote over 400 works, though many of these were piano pieces or songs. Iris Elkington was born in Birmingham and studied piano and composition at the Birmingham and Midland Institute School of Music with Sir Granville Bantock. This was almost certainly Elkington’s first work for orchestra, and one can only marvel at the extraordinary mastery that it displays.

In a century when most British composers were the product of a solid middle-class background, Kenneth Leighton was a notable exception. Born into a humble family in Wakefield, Yorkshire, Leighton composed three piano concertos. The first, featured here, was written the year he graduated from Oxford and is a lively piece, full of youthful vigor. Ruth Gipps was born in Bexhill-on-Sea in 1921, and as a child prodigy she performed her first composition by the age of eight. At the age of 33, an old injury to her right hand put paid to her career as a pianist and she decided to focus her energies on conducting and composition. She was a pioneering conductor, and became one of the most prolific female British composers.

The songs of John Ireland form a major contribution to vocal music during the first half of the 20th century, and encompass a wide variety of styles and moods. This collection of songs is designed to show Ireland’s range, including some that are popular and others, such as “Mother and Child,” that are rarely performed. Most previous recordings have been made by male singers, and several of the songs presented here are receiving their first recording by a soprano.

Heroes Meet: Music from the Faroe Islands CD: GVB 20 Price Code: R (SRP $17.99) Number of Discs: 1 Jewel Case, Box Lot 25 d

For the last 12 years Gavin Bryars has developed a strong and very special relationship with the Faroe Islands, and has undertaken a number of projects there. The first connection came about when he met the operatic bass Rúni Brattaberg, who sang in Bryars’ third opera G in Mainz, and who is the only classical singer to come from the Faroe Islands. This led to a new piece, From Egil’s Saga, for bass voice and chamber orchestra, which sets old Icelandic saga poetry. Included in the piece are fragments of the music that the composer and singer recorded in various locations on the Faroes, most notably, in the magnificent cathedral-like sea cave of the island of Hestur. Subsequently Bryars was asked to write another piece with chamber orchestra, this time to celebrate the Faroese hero Tróndur of Gøtu. This is for two solo voices, Rúni Brattaberg and the beautiful Faroese singer/composer Eivør Pálsdottír, who was later to sing the title role in the premiere of Bryars’ fourth opera Marilyn Forever. Eventually both pieces were performed and recorded in the Nordic House, Tórshavn, for this album and a short choral setting of one of the first modern Faroese poets Christian Matras was subsequently added for the choir.

On this CD, the widely renowned lute virtuoso Yasunori Imamura presents not only the result of his intense study of the history and techniques of the fascinating instrument, but also a representative overview of the rich and multifaceted literature composed for vihuela within the 16th and 17th centuries around the Spanish court. Interestingly, none of the surviving vihuelas is to be found in Spain. Of the four surviving instruments, one is in the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris; one was discovered in a Jesuit church in Ecuador; one is owned by the Musée de la Musique in Paris; and one, built by Belchior Dias (Lisbon, 1581), is owned by the Royal College of Music in London. For this recording, Yasunori Imamura plays a reconstruction by José Miguel Moreno, Madrid, dating from 2012.

Before the broadcasting industry flourished, the “hits” of the era were enjoyed in private homes, where one played them on one’s favorite instrument. If publishers of well-known music wanted to reach a broader audience, they often used the possibility of setting it for different instruments, that is, smaller and simpler arrangements. Scores of major operas and famous arias were “reduced” for keyboard and voice, or reworked for a melody instrument in order to reach the widest possible audience. Those kinds of arrangements are presented on this CD, set for trombone and fortepiano.

Jón Leifs was born at Sólheimar farm in North Iceland, and left for Germany in 1916 to study at the Leipzig Conservatory. Beginning with piano arrangements of Icelandic folk songs, Leifs started an active career as a composer in the 1920s. From the 1930s he concentrated his efforts on the composition of large orchestral works, some of which were not performed until after his death. In 1947 tragedy struck; Leifs’ daughter Líf drowned in a swimming accident off the coast of Sweden. Overcome with grief, Leifs composed four works dedicated to her memory including the string quartet Vita et mors, Op. 36 heard here.

In both France and Germany, the registers of musical chapels clearly show the progressive reduction, to the point of disappearance, of viola da gamba players, while the number of cellists grew. Nonetheless, until the last the viola could count on very fertile ground!

26

Necessity is the mother of invention, and it was just such a need that gave rise to the birth of the idea of presenting the Winterreise cycle with guitar accompaniment! Despite many warnings André Fischer remained convinced that this cycle, of all Schubert’s repertoire, is the most adaptable for guitar. The version presented here is comprised of arrangements by German guitarist Tilman Hoppstock and Japanese guitarist Masanobu Nishigaki with a few changes made, which were motivated by the original text.

At the end of the 17th century, “delightful,” “genteel,” and “most pleasant” were used to describe the company of the pipe recorder or common flute in many English manuals. For this CD, the artists chose duets that were originally composed for two recorders, and music that mentions the recorder as one of the possible instruments. The CD opens with a piece for only two recorders, “An Italian Ground,” from The Delightful Companion (London, 1686).

On January 15, 1941, the premiere of Messiaen’s most-performed work “Quartet for the End of Time” ushered in a period of great creativity. It is almost hard to notice how difficult the period of war was for Messiaen, when one considers his immense artistic output.

Since its creation in 2008, the Sirius Saxophone Quartet have concentrated on contemporary, mainly Dutch works for four saxophones. In order to bridge the distance between listeners and the rather difficult music on their programs, the members of the SSQ often tell the audience about the background of what they are about to hear, sometimes through an anecdote concerning the circumstances in which a particular piece was conceived. They truly believe that, thanks to the players’ sustained enthusiasm and commitment to their chosen repertoire, contemporary music may be better accepted and understood by usually reluctant audiences.

Lindoro The Royal Wind Music En er Mundo

The Royal Wind Music/Paul Leenhouts: director Tracks include a collection of pieces by Bartók, Poulenc, Piazzolla, Verdi, and more

CD: LDO 3014 Price Code: S (SRP $18.99) Number of Discs: 1 Jewel Case, Box Lot 25 d

This new CD features a mélange of 34 pieces from all over the world, resulting in a colorful collection that certainly doesn’t pretend to be part of the standard repertoire of a renaissance recorder consort! Perhaps, from a classical point of view, one could even be heavily criticized for performing Mussorgsky, Verdi, and Bartók on recorders... On the other hand, composers/arrangers of the past also occupied themselves with creating musical “divertimenti,” often for quite unusual instruments!

Between 1849 and 1853 Schumann composed eight mixed chamber music pieces for various instruments and piano. Four of these pieces are included on this CD. Terra Nova now has the pleasure of making two alternative versions of 3 Romances, Op. 94 available for the first time ever on a single album! One is the Simrock version, and the other is rather special, as it is a version for viola inspired by the alternative version of the clarinet sonatas on viola by Schumann’s protégé Johannes Brahms.
