ICSM RECORDS

p. 8

Musicians these days tend to take things into their own hands by starting their own label, and that’s just what Fiammetta Tarli and Ivo Varbanov, a London-based married couple of pianists (she Italian, he Bulgarian), have done with ICSM Records. The label, founded in 2014 and successfully funded on a Kickstarter project, will release up to ten recordings each year. The couple works with like-minded artists, sound engineers, and people from the music world, daring to release adventurous programming and searching for a personal approach and dialogue with audiences. ICSM Records comes to Allegro Classical via Launch Music International.

For her follow-up, Ruehr scales down to intimate solo and chamber works for strings and piano, all with references to older music: baroque elements infuse the Klein Suite, while the three movements of the jazz-tinged Second Violin Sonata are dedicated to her composition teacher William Bolcom, jazz teacher Eddie Russ, and Oscar Peterson, whom Ruehr met on New Year’s Eve 1980. Orchestra of the Swan Kenneth Woods: conductor GÁL: Symphony No. 1 in D major, Op. 30 • Symphony No. 2 • Symphony No. 3 in A Major, Op. 62 • Symphony No. 4 (Sinfonia Concertante) “Hats off to conductor Kenneth Woods and his Orchestra of the Swan, who have been making a case for Gál’s elegantly built orchestral pieces … Here’s hoping this is the beginning of a substantial Gál revival.” — NPR, All Things Considered Last year Kenneth Woods and the Stratford-upon-Avon based Orchestra of the Swan made musical history when they completed the first-ever recorded cycle of the Symphonies by Hans Gál. By dusting off the Austrian émigré composer’s gorgeously melodic and finely crafted scores, which remained relatively dormant throughout the 20th century, Woods has introduced a new generation to Gál’s wide-ranging and extensive oeuvre. On this set, the four symphonies (each originally released alongside those of Robert Schumann), are re-mastered and presented all together for the first time, opening the door to further exploration and discovery. Allegro Classical Welcomes Icsm Records Fiammetta Tarli, Ivo Varbanov: piano four hands BRAHMS: Waltz for piano four hands, Op. 39 • Liebeslieder Walzer (Love Song Waltzes) for piano four hands, Op. 52a The first release from ICSM Records features the complete recording of Brahms’ four-hand waltzes. Dance music was in Johannes Brahms’ blood, and two particular dance-measures fascinated him throughout his life: the waltz and the Hungarian Czárdás. Here, ICSM explores what Brahms could do with waltz rhythms, even on the smallest scale, in the form of the piano duet. Brahms’ two sets of Liebeslieder-Walzer (Love-Song Waltzes) used to be among his best-known works. These beguiling little waltz-songs remind us of a time before radio or television, when domestic music-making was a fact of life; a time when “quartet parties” were frequent and families would gather around the piano to play and sing for their evening entertainment. Full Advertising Package with Fanfare, including interview and review. Further Advertising with BBC Music Magazine and Gramophone.

Andrea Padova: piano J.S. BACH: Goldberg Variations BWV 988 “The pianist Andrea Padova turns sound into poetry. His virtuosity, sensitively managed, resounds through every measure.” — Washington Post Andrea Padova’s experience is closely linked to Johann Sebastian Bach’s music; he won the J.S. Bach International Piano Competition in 1995, and from that moment began recording several CDs devoted to Bach’s keyboard works. In the execution of this CD, the variations are not only divided into groups; in all the cases in which Bach left an esoteric indication, the interpreter has chosen not simply to place one variation after another, but to link them so that the end of one flows directly into the beginning of the next.

As regards the present album, though, we need not worry about this dilemma, given that each of the compositions by Rebecca Saunders, Benedict Mason, Luke Bedford, and John Zorn is a little masterpiece in its own right. At the 2013 edition of col legno’s “Vienna Modern” festival, the Arditti Quartet performed two concerts, and from the live recordings the label has selected four pieces, all released for the first time. The Arditti Quartet has not only helped to shape our perception of contemporary music over the past 40 years but, thanks to their accumulated experience, these four musicians also exemplify the future of this fascinating musical universe.

King Henry VIII himself showed a long-lasting passion for music. ABC Classics Erin Wall: soprano Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Sir Andrew Davis: conductor STRAUSS: Don Juan, Op. 20 • Vier letzte Lieder (Four Last Songs) • Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30 ABC Classics is proud to unveil a new recording from Australia’s finest orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, featuring conductor Sir Andrew Davis (appointed Chief Conductor in 2013) and Canadian soprano Erin Wall. This is the first release in Sir Andrew’s Strauss cycle for ABC Classics, and he takes the listener on a journey through the ardor and heroics of the world’s greatest lover as imagined in Strauss’ Don Juan, and a delightful Four Last Songs with the amazing Erin Wall, an exciting young soprano with repertoire encompassing Mozart’s Donna Anna through, most recently, Strauss’ Arabella for the Metropolitan Opera. Wall’s voice is a glorious instrument: free, full, creamy, and rich-toned, with musicianship and control in abundance. Rounding off the recording is the awe-inspiring Also sprach Zarathustra, a work of massive scope consummately performed here by orchestra and conductor.

Elizabeth Whitehouse: soprano Bernadette Cullen: mezzo-soprano Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Melbourne Chorale Markus Stenz: conductor MAHLER: Symphony No. 2 in C minor “Resurrection” This is a recording is taken from a live “Gala Farewell Concert” to Markus Stenz, who left his seven-year tenure as the MSO Chief Conductor to move back to his hometown of Cologne, where he was appointed General Music Director from the 2004/5 season. Through music, Mahler conveyed his deepest feelings about life and death, his anger at the disparity between the possible and the actual, and a love of German folk culture, none more so than in his symphonies. His symphonic writing ebbs and flows, epic then intimate, exultant quickly followed by despair, no more so than in his mighty choral “Resurrection” symphony. This performance boasts two great Australian singers: Elizabeth Whitehouse, and the great Australian mezzo Bernadette Cullen. The Markus Stenz/MSO legacy will have a lasting impact on Melbourne’s music-making for many years to come, as the trust he built with the Melbourne audience allowed concert programs to become more innovative and concert-goers to broaden their musical horizons.

Leon Bosch is a virtuoso, always on the lookout for new opportunities to champion his instrument. Here he unearths a composer and double bassist, a student of fellow Spaniard Pedro Valls. These are some of Cervera-Bret’s most technically brilliant and melancholic pieces, chosen by Bosch from the 62 known works for double bass discovered in the attic of the Cervera family home many years after Josep’s death in 1969.

This CD features four contrasting sonatas by Muzio Clementi, preceded by the infamous Toccata, and has been described by Clementi scholars as one of the most significant Clementi documents ever to have been produced!

He studied in Moscow and Munich before moving to the UK, where he has won numerous prizes and, in 2007, made his Wigmore Hall recital debut. This CD is a wonderful selection of piano music originating from Vienna, featuring three groundbreaking composers with their own very individual takes on the piano sonata. Beautifully played, this sonata recital is a superbly entertaining account of the works, which show the innovation and the hereditary development of the sonata form: virtuosically exposed by Mozart, romantically matured by Beethoven, and taken to the edge of tonality by Berg. A thoughtfully-devised program, illuminated by excellent booklet notes and played by a rising star of the piano world, this disc will delight and amuse lovers of classical music.

An odd combination? Actually, no! Rota lived entirely in the 20th century while Desyatnikov was born in 1955, but what these composers have in common is not just the century they lived in but the way their work challenges what academic music had become. Neither Rota nor Desyatnikov has ever been part of any musical movement, and they have written no theoretical tracts (as was all the rage in the 20th century), but we can still see their music as a riposte to contemporary isolationism, arrogance, and fear.

The repertoire of this album is truly fascinating. The great importance that instrumental music had in the late 16th century was continued in the 17th century. It was the era in which it emancipated from vocal music, and at that time the keyboard repertoire freely developed from Renaissance models: dances with variations, variations on vocal melodies or on bassi ostinati and tenors, improvisatory forms like toccate, and stricter forms based on imitative counterpoint, as ricercare, fantasia, canzona, and capriccio.

One of the key moments in the history of this fascinating CD happened in 2010 when the Chief Curator of the Music Museum of Barcelona called on Xavier Díaz-Latorre to make a choice from among ten instruments that he had previously selected. Those chosen would be restored and then used in the recording. It was an impressive selection of 16th- to 19th-century guitars that had not been played in modern times, all in very good condition and all with interesting features that made them worthy to be selected. After a long process involving the selection and restoration of the instruments, the choice of a repertoire, the study of the guitars, and the recording and production of the CD, the task entrusted to him has been, in Xavier Díaz-Latorre’s own words, “one of the most fascinating experiences in my entire musical career.”

Clavier Übung: Third Part

Rainer Goede demonstrates the inimitable possibilities of the Wiegleb organ at collegiate church St. Gumbertus Ansbach on this double CD, constrasting the magnificent trio sonatas by Johann Sebastian Bach with the musical language of his student, Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwenke.

Rainer Goede uses the possibilities of the recently restored Wiegleb organ at collegiate church St. Gumbertus Ansbach for an innovative reinterpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Dritter Theil der Clavier Übung.” The unique character of the instrument is impressively demonstrated, and the instructive organ compositions are clearly and remarkably interpreted.

Benedetto MARCELLO

J.S. BACH: Third part of the Clavier Übung “The Lutheran Mass”

MARCELLO: Twelve Sonatas for oboe and organ

The second release in a series from Pierre Bardon; in the preceding recording, he had chosen the version of the chorales with pedal board, while in this one those written for an organ without. The two volumes therefore constitute a reasoned diptych, all the more interesting since they are interpreted on the same instrument.

Benedetto Marcello (b. 1686) was a prolific composer responsible for nine masses, eight Psalms books, more than 350 cantatas for solo voice, and 80 vocal duets. Among his many writings, his best-known is the satirical pamphlet “Téatro alla moda,” published in Venice in 1720, the main target of which was Antonio Vivaldi.
