Why does the name sound like it might be associated with that plucky indie label File Under: Music? Well son, it is. DU:M is the bratty-snot-nosed-hesher child of File Under: Music, and File Under: Music is D:UM’s hip liberal parent that listens to Starbucks Jazz. MALIGNANT RECORDS pg 10–11 Since 1994, Maryland’s Malignant Records has maintained its status as one of the world’s premier labels specializing in dark ambient, blackened noise, power electronics, and true industrial music, featuring such notable acts as Yen Pox, Phelios, False Mirror, Nyodene D, Terra Sancta, Sewer Goddess, Navicon Torture Technologies, Funerary Call, Sektor 304, and many more. Bit Riot Records pg 13 Headquartered on the outskirts of Chicago, Bit Riot Records is artist-owned, artist-run, and artist-driven. Established in 2006 by Eric Dusik and Tonya Leigh, the label was initially envisioned as only an imprint for Eric’s solo work but quickly grew, and plans to continue its expansion by signing more quality artists in the realm of — but not limited to — techno metal, electronic rock, and industrial music. They hope to restore not only the valuable relationship between artist and label, but the trust that seems to be lost in the industry. The label is not about being elitist; nor is it about being detached from the world. Their goal is to build a community that will give bands and fans a new confidence in record labels by simply allowing them to play a part and have their voices heard. When Alf was nine years old, his mother’s employers offered him a deal: if he passed the entrance exams to a well-regarded local state school, they would pay for his piano lessons. Alf spent the next six years studying classical piano, Brazilian popular music, and U.S. jazz. Heavily influenced by composers such as Debussy and Bach, as well as jazz musicians Cole Porter and George Gershwin, Alf co-founded a Frank Sinatra fan club in Rio in the late 1940s. His first major career break came when he was recruited to play in Hotel Plaza in the Copacabana neighborhood, a meeting point that many see as the birthplace of bossa nova. Among the regulars were Carlos Lyra, Roberto Menescal, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Alf’s reputation for pioneering a new sound earned him the nickname “Senhor Modernidade” (“Mr. Modernity”). He produced only 20 records, but he had a huge impact on his country’s music. He passed away at age 80 in 2010, and after his death the lyrics to one of his best-known songs — “Eu e a Brisa” — were read out in the Brazilian senate.

One could quite easily pick out Angry’s noise rock, post-hardcore, and ’70s fuzz rock influences on this recording, but you can also see it onstage. Without being derivative, Fenton conjures rock-n-roll anti-heroes like David Yow as he trollishly lumbers around the stage, spitting beer into the air and flashing his sweaty, hairy belly at the crowd. “Purposely revolting” is a term you might use to describe Fenton’s approach to live shows. Lyrically, the band stays true to its namesake emotion. Fenton screams about the things that piss him off, which more often than not are just little shit; those things that make you angrier than they should (like getting shit on by a bird or being annoyed by slow pedestrians). The rage he pours into the music seems so disproportionate to the subject matter that you can’t help but wonder: is he really angry about those little things, or is he just angry about being angry?

Hidden Towers has been a maturing idea for over a decade. Founding member and guitarist Chris Cantrell put aside this past year to record the album he always wanted to hear, and to enlist the lineup he always wanted to see. With the powerful and articulate rhythm section of Ben Holland on bass and Jakub Svoboda on drums, Hidden Towers has finally come to full fruition. Taking largely from bigger-than-life classic metal, ’70s jazz fusion, and space rock, Hidden Towers have turned their stripped-down lineup into an evolved spectrum of sound on Olympus Mons. Set for release through Defiled Under Music in January 2013, Olympus Mons — recorded by Jesse Karr at Rain City Recorders — will be the band’s first full-length release.

Alessandro Cortini, who spent many years as a member of Nine Inch Nails, recorded Forse using a Buchla Music Easel, of which only 13 are known to exist. Forse, meaning “maybe” In Italian, is a series of three releases spread out over CD, LP, and cassette, with each format containing unique material. Cortini says: “All pieces were written and performed live on a Buchla Music Easel, in the span of one month. I found that the limited array of modules that the instrument offers sparked my creativity. Most pieces consist of a repeating chord progression, where the real change happens at a spectral/dynamic level, as opposed to the harmonic/chordal one. I believe that the former are just as effective as the latter, in the sense that the sonic presentation (distortion, filtering, wave shaping) are just as expressive as a chord change or chord type, and often reinforce said chord progressions. Of all the years with Nine Inch Nails the period spent writing and recording the instrumental record Ghosts I–IV is probably the one that changed my approach to music making the most. After that record I started getting more into instrumental composition, although I tried to approach it in a different way. The formal debut of Martin Stürtzer (Phelios) and Christian Stritzel’s deep ambient project, Tiefschlaf was recorded live during a “sleep-concert” that took place at Germany’s Phobos Festival in September 2011. The blues means many things to many people. To some, the purists, it is the scratchy honesty of Robert Johnson with his devil-fueled fretwork. Born in 2008 and raised on rock in Morgårdshammar, Sweden, the four-piece Mother of God cast off a lot of the retro ’70s mentality of their countrymen in favor of a more modern approach. Poppy Ackroyd is a performer and composer from London who is currently based in Edinburgh. Classically trained on violin and piano, she fell in love with contemporary piano music and with the piano beyond the keys, discovering the world of sound that could be made from other parts of the instrument. Realizing the violin had the same potential, she has spent the last few years composing delicate, intricate, and beautifully atmospheric music by manipulating and multi-tracking sounds from these two instruments. The Alvaret Ensemble is a new improvisatory collective based around Greg Haines (piano), Jan Kleefstra (voice/poems), Romke Kleefstra (guitar/effects), and Sytze Pruiksma (percussion). This self-titled album is their first release, and was recorded over three nights at the Grunewaldkirche in Berlin by Nils Frahm in August 2011. In keeping with the spirit of the project, other musicians were invited to the sessions to add their own color — Iden Reinhart played violin, as did Peter Broderick, while Hilary Jeffery provided the album with its mournful trombone tones. Martyn Heyne, who was just there to help out with recording, ended up unleashing the church’s organ and bringing a completely new element and sense of power to the album.
