T

he San Francisco-based Alexander String Quartet founded Foghorn Classics in 1994. The idea to form their own record label grew out of the Quartet’s desire to document and circulate the extensive and multifaceted work that they felt truly represented their best, most important efforts. In the ensuing years the group has recorded several distinguished projects, many of which have been produced by multiple Grammy Award-winning producer Judith Sherman. As a mature and internationally celebrated string quartet fast approaching their 30th anniversary, this catalog documents some of the greatest repertoire with several celebratory collaborations with distinguished musical friends, cherished commissions, and other special projects. In addition to several cannons of important repertoire, the label also features some of the first recorded work of the ASQ’s younger protégés in their ongoing work as Directors of San Francisco State University’s Morrison Chamber Music Center.

The first recording of Kurt Vonnegut’s libretto! Vonnegut’s libretto is loosely based on The Execution of Private Slovik, a nonfiction book by William Bradford Huie published in 1954. The resulting version is a highly controversial yet entertaining fusion of Stravinsky’s music and the edgy, abrupt Vonnegut text. This is an American soldier’s tale that doesn’t have a happy ending. In the Vonnegut libretto there are four spoken roles, that of the General (narrator), Private Slovik, a Red Cross Nurse, and a Military Policemen. The work has only been performed a few times and an international copyright dispute, just settled in 2006, limited performances even further.

GAULTIER: Works for lute The association of Denis Gaultier with Apollo in a 17th century lute manuscript is not as audacious as it might at first appear: the lutenist was held in great esteem by his contemporaries; for many he was the embodiment of genius on the lute and one of the very few capable of “speaking” to his listeners. At first glance, his compositions seem little different from those of his colleagues, but further examination reveals a sophistication unparalleled in any other lute music of the period.

One is immediately struck by the economy of the writing, in which no note is superfluous and the musical structure is reduced to its essence. This minimalist approach is even more apparent in later, published versions that show subtle traces of revision. Denis Gaultier exploited the instrument to the fullest, and in doing so took the art of lute-playing to a realm undreamt of by elder colleagues. His music placed great demands on the lutenist, instrument, and listener alike for, knowing what could be achieved, Gaultier chose to push the instrument to its limits, and everyone else along with it.

Lorenzo Ghielmi is one of Europe’s leading organists, and the international music press has praised many of his recordings. This recording presents his view on the eighteen so-called Leipzig Chorales that Bach started compiling after 1740. However, most of the pieces can be dated to the period when Bach was organist in Weimar (1701–1717); this was also when he wrote most of his organ music, including the famous Toccata, Adagio, and Fugue in C major that concludes the present recording. Lorenzo Ghielmi plays on the Ahrend organ of the Basilica of San Simpliciano in Milano.
